The fact that your honest and say when you don't like something, puts so much more weight when you do like something! So thanks for being honest and not just saying everything is good....
He’s amazing ❤
Totally agree with your thoughts. Ever since this song came out years ago it’s made me cry every time I hear it! It refers to fathers who are in the Israeli army fighting there. Like a previous commenter said, the year it came out there was a war going on in the area, so it was very real.
Yaakov Mordechai (the soloist) is the younger brother of Eli Gerstner (on the piano) who created the yeshiva boys choir. It seems that YBC likes to feature very young kids with more of squeaky type of voice. Each boys choir has a sound-Miami boys choir, yeshiva boys choir, there’s also New York boys choir and Shalsheles junior. All these boy groups have a very distinct sound.
And as people have explained the liquid in the menorah cups is olive oil. The reason for this beautiful custom is in the originally Chanuka story. When the Greeks trashed the Temple, the kohanim (plural of kohen-priest) could not find oil with which to light the menorah in the temple. They found one small jug of pure olive oil and one of the miracles of Chanuka is that the small jug burned for eight days. So many people have the custom to use olive oil in their menorahs to commemorate that. I happen to use olive oil every week also for my shabbos candles.
Thanks for your continued content and genuine curiosity! It really shows and is appreciated
“Alvin and the Chipmunk-ey” is by far the best description of YBC I’ve ever heard 😂
“I see tears in mommy’s eyes… as she tries to comfort me”
I see this to mean that while the adults may be putting on a brave face for their children, the children see through that and sense the fear that’s cloaked in courage.
I'm gonna be honest:
As an Israeli, I was surprised this song was so often recommended. It's a super sensitive topic, because this is the story of our lives. I feel like this is harder to fully empathize with for someone on the outside, despite the seemingly universal message for any children of military parents. That's how I feel, anyway.
I also share your opinion of their their singing in general, but that is of course just personal taste.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed watching it, on the whole.
You mean Israeli children don't want their father to come home? I'm not sure he is an outsider as all sects do the army. But even if it is all know what is like to long for their father especially when you dont hear from him which can be common in the IDF.
@@avigdorf what? That's not what I said.
I think that the feeling this song gives over is more specific to our situation. The trauma of your father (who is not normally a military man) suddenly being called to war after your life has already been put on hold by sirens, is not the same as the trauma of the child whose father is always a soldier. Not saying that that child's trauma is not significant, it's just different.
Also, this song is basically "exploiting" us emotionally, much like Shwekey's clip of "Cry No More", which is why I don't listen to it regardless. I don't like this kind of "tribute".
@@sheerayb From the uniform and images it seems that he is a military man as much as most Israeli citizens. He probalby does Milluim (for PortuguesePais's sake that is annual military duty). And this is just talking about a point in live when he was called up for war. If you look at the release date it was produced during Operation Pillar of Defense.
@@avigdorf most Israeli citizens are called into military duty once a year or so. He was called into war, which is not that same as miluim, and this happened by definition after incessant bombings.
It was written for Operation Cast Lead, which is a war that took place on Hanukkah in the winter of 2008-2009.
@@sheerayb I live in Israel I know how military duty works. But as I mentioned this video was made during a wartime which is referring to a regular soldier being called up for the war but in a normal time his father would be called for regular duty
Omg, I just got back after a tough day and just seeing that you out up this title song had changed everything, I haven't even watched yet but already feel excited, this song speaks to me on an emotional level fit to what I am going through, I needed this reminder. Thanks
Sorry ahead of time if my review disappoints you 🫣. Just being honest
@@PortuguesePai no worries, it didn't . I hear your point, generally do not listen to this choir cuz of the voices but some songs that I connect to on an emotional level it doesn't matter the quality of singing rather the meaning of the song takes precedence. Also this made me think about the war in Ukraine, just imagine the kids hoping they daddy's come home safe...
Spot on reaction (since I agree with your observations wholeheartedly lol) Yeshiva boys choir is pretty much a cacophony of screeching in my opinion.
The 'liquid' in the Menorah is pure Olive Oil. Although one fulfills the mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah menorah with many kinds of candles, the best way to do the mitzvah is with a wick and pure olive oil, since the miracle of Chanukah occurred with pure olive oil.
Oh another music reaction video!!!! i was waiting for it............... I love when you are honest and say it as it is i agree with you 100% the lyrics are great but the voices not so much, if you dont like it just say it, so then when you do like it it carries much more weight .... Keep it coming!!!!!!!!!! love it.
You finally did this one!! It's the most emotionally manipulative song in the entire galaxy and I LOVE IT 😂😂 I cried like a baby the first time I saw it and then I went right back and watched it 5 more times so I could cry some more. Yes, there is probably some autotuning going on there. Note: lot of people jumping on the bandwagon to say that they don't like it, but if you look at the comments on the original video there are thousands of very positive comments from Jews, Christians, Muslims, many of whom can sadly directly relate to the subject matter and all of whom seem to have been genuinely moved by the song.
I grew up with this music playing in my house all the time! My father called it a ladder choir because they are each trying to get higher than the others. It's a sound common to a lot of the Jewish boys choir.
🤣 Ladder choir....that's priceless
I’m not even kidding when I was little and listened to them, I thought I was listening to little girls sing. I was surprised to find out they were boys🫣😂
@@odeleya1768 you guys must be pretty young... I'm 34 at the moment and I only heard of YBC about 10 years ago (or less) but never can I say that I grew up with them.
I grew up with Arutz 7, Miami boys choir, London school of Jewish song, the late Toronto choir and even a little on Agudath choir which my Mum grew up on and passed it to us.
There is a feeling that it is chanuka and the family is hoping daddy can make it home for menorah lighting. Of course this with the backdrop that he may not come home at all- ever. The anxiety the song creates and the relief as soon as you see the dad trudging home - for many kids in israel (and their moms) that is their life.
Thanks for the review! I'm currently in the Israeli army and I wear my tzitzit every day under my shirt. Can confirm :)
Stay safe out there!
Totally agree with your review of this song.
The liquid in the menorah is olive oil. The most luxurious material for lighting a Hanukkah according to custom.
I truly appreciate your respect and curiousity. You must have been an incredible student with your eye for detail and excellent memory. My suggestion would be Hold On Tight by Benny Friedman and Baruch Levine. It touches upon a source of great pain for many (Jewish) couples and is emotional without being too dramatic.
Thank you for reviewing this song! It makes me cry every time
He was my neighbor his voice is less nasal live he was 14 here and yes his father did join the idf in around 2014
You have a great way of thinking through all this!
Thank you for your reaction! I have to write that you react with discretion and nobility, I appreciate it! You will really like Yonatan Razel's song "Vehee She'amda" - performed in Caesarea with Yaakov Shawaki!
Keep it up really enjoying your videos!!
Tzisis is a spiritual protection, so you would say it's especially worn under a military uniform 😉
Pretty sure this song is for Operation Cast Lead, war in Gaza Hanukkah time 2008-2009. Written for the fathers who didn't come home.
The imagty is mostly archive videos
Tzitzit/Tzitzis is regarded as a spiritual shield and is worn to protect the wearer. Many people claim to have experienced miracles while wearing them. It would seem counterintuitive to remove them when you are actually going into harm's way.
Oh for sure! I had just never seen them worn on someone in a military outfit.
I wasn't aware of the protective spiritual nature of them, which makes a lot more sense. Every time I've come across them they have been on non-military people.
@@PortuguesePai crazy story about tzitzis - when my brother was in the Israeli army (now he lives in NY but is still in the reserves) the commander told him that he had to remove his tzitzis for a training they were going to do because it was over 100° F and that wasn't counting walking up mountains with guys on your back. My brother put up a big fight and refused to remove them. Eventually he got permission to wear them.
An interesting thing to note: they do make camouflage colored Tzitzis, meaning the garment is colored, not the strings.
@@familyfirst4ever good for your brother. Proud that he stuck up for that and didn't let them make him take it off. But on that note, how come the strings wouldn't be made coloured as well?
@@PortuguesePai the reason for white is because the commandment is to wear a garment with tzitzis/strings that are colored tichelet. Being that we don't know what the real color of tichelet is these days, we wear plain white strings. To add the strings are what make the garment holy. Without them, the garment is just a garment. So it doesn't really matter what color the actual garment is.
@@PortuguesePai just to add... techeiles is a blue color ink that is mentioned in the Torah. It is made from a specific sea cresture. We don't know what it is in our times, so therefore it's better not to dye the strings any color as it is forbidden to dye them with the wrong blue ink.
The strings of the Tzitzis garment are tied in special knots. The strings plus knots all add up to the number 613 which is meant to remind the wearer of G-d's 613 commandments that He gave us to fulfill.
If I remember correctly, this song was out after a couple of years when there was war in Israel around Chanukah.
I can't listen to this.. too much bed memories.
For Chanukah you should listen to the Macabits. I think you'll love their musical talent.
Another vote here for Maccabeats and Six13 for Hanukkah songs, but their style is more like educational parodies. They're not real religious Hanukkah songs (and ftr, neither is Adam Sandler's 😜)
Been saying all the same things since it came out many years ago. Ur not alone
Love your videos! I feel like you haven't yet cracked open the genre of Jewish parodies of contemporary music. See Maccabeats, Six13, Shlock Rock.... There's a lot of fun stuff out there :)
If u didn’t pause every like 30 seconds and just sat and listened, u wld cry for sure.
Unfortunately, this is the situation in Israel. It can be your dad, your son, your neighbor who is fighting a war.
It is probably hard for Americans to imagine how common this is. We are in constant war here.
It is clear that MBC is much better than YBC in all parameters
Listen again to this song with closed eyes without pausing you'll definitely cry. Every time I'm listening to this song it comes tears. Beautiful song
Check out "daddy dear" it's a beautiful song
Here's a link to a live performance video ruclips.net/video/fgzc3OAoTYo/видео.html
It is beautiful, but the tune is from a non-Jewish song
Oh yes pleasssssseeeee
The imagery can be from any one of our many battles we have in this country 😂😅
The boy who sings the song is the producer's brother so he gave him the part later he has a better voice later meaning later in life
Would love for you to watch the many Chanukah parody covers that the group Maccabeats has done over the years.
Make sure you get "candlelight" (their first viral hit) and "All about that Neis"
alvin and the chipmunks haha you have a great sense of humor!
I love Daddy come home ❤it’s so cute
The kid crying, may be moishele the kid that was rescued in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. Lipa has a stunning song about it called moishele
I don't think so. It's just a random kid
No doesn't look like him
The liquid is olive oil and it's considered a more elevated way to light chanukah candles.
Yes. The war clip is filmed in Israel. These are battle scenes in Israel's wars...
You should check out journeys by Abie Rotenberg - his Storytelling in music is stellar
My favorite Jewish singer is Hanan Ben Ari.
I heard Yerachmiel Begun say that the boys in Miami Boys Choir can sing just as high, but as a rule they stick to lower octaves since it's more pleasant on the ears. Yeshiva Boys Choir seems to take a the-higher-the-better approach.
The liquid in those candles is olive Oil which is the prefered way to light Chanukah Candles. Regarding shabbat a lot use liquid paraphane as it is much nicer as you poiunted out. But for both Candles are just as acceptable.
The moment we've bin waiting for...
The candles are oil. In the case of the Shabbat dinner, some people light paraffin, which is more of a liquid oil. Also there are candles called neronim that are lit in deeper cups and become more of an oil as they burn.
Love the honesty. I feel that way about Yeshiva Boys Choir in general. They do alot of shrieking which isn't pleasant to the ear. Miami Boys Choir does a much better job training the boys to sing well
agree
Agree, Miami has more moderation in their voice, proper singing, yeshiva boys can be fun but more screaming.
YES
100% this
The monrah we put in olive oil in a small Glass!! !!
4:55 - This was in Kiryat Sefer - not too far from Jerusalem. Obviously, the message doesn't care about the exact location. If I'm not mistaken, this was produced shortly after one of many wars (Cast Lead?) that have unfortunately taken place in Israel in which civilians were the targets of our enemies missiles.
In Israel, 3 years of compulsory service is the standard, followed by 2 weeks of service every year until age 40(?).
Thanks for everything
The kids voice like you said is not so great but it's the producers young son singing. His father Eli Gerstner is the one on the piano. The reason the song is popular is more for the moving lyrics and the tune not the singers voice on this one. At least in my opinion...
It's his younger brother, not his son.
Exactly... Alvin and the chipmunks. That's what I was thinking. It was not easy on my ears. This kid shouldn't do solos.
There is a live version of this song which is superb
Omg you have to watch Eden hason and Agam buhbut ״bati lehatzil otach” 🙌🏽
If I might make a recommendation of another song with a similar theme: The lyrics of this song are attributed to Eli Gerstner (the leader of the Yeshiva Boys Choir; the soloist is his younger brother) and Yossi Toiv. The latter is better known by his stage name as "Country Yossi", and has himself produced more than a dozen albums over the years. Most of his songs are "parodies" of popular country songs, imitating (flawlessly) the original music and style while changing the lyrics just enough so they're Jewishly themed. But he's also got a number of original compositions, among them _Little Kinderlach,_ the original for the Kars-4-Kids jingle.
The song of his I'd recommend, apropos to this video, is _Little One,_ an original composition from his album _Break Out_ (1989). Here's a YT link: ruclips.net/video/TX9Ice5lyjc/видео.html (just audio, no visuals). I don't know whether there are any videos of his live performances, though I did see him performing live as a child (~25 years ago).
I did not know about this beautiful song until you reacted to it here, and for that I'm grateful. Thanks, man.
The soloist is Yaakov Mordechai Gerstner. He is the little brother of the producer - Eli Gerstner ("EG Productions"). Eli is the piano player in this video. So any complaints you have about the soloist selection might be blamed on family bias. But YMG was a member of YBC from the time he was like 4 or 5 and he had a great deal of "cuteness factor" for the choir. You will find other videos featuring YMG available on YT from his younger years. (I think YMG will be turning 20 in 2023, but I can't confirm his birth year).
My childhood song 🎶
Thanks again hoping u can do more English Jewish songs..😎I got to give u credit how much u pick up in a music video the first time u listen
The kids dad or maybe older brother is playing the piano
Check out matisyahu when he was still orthodox
I feel like the yeshiva boys choir is a screaming match to see how high they can get. Lol. I'm also not a fan of this choir.
Hey Mike, I definitely agree with your take on this one. Not a huge fan of the sound of their voices at all. You actually touch on a very interesting thing culturally which is that the "yeshivish" or "litvish" sect within Orthodox Judaism specifically sing and pray in a nasal and high pitched tone, something not done by the more Hassidic Jews. Another example of this would be the singer Baruch Levine, if you want to check him out to see what I'm talking about.
Baruch Levine has amazing songs though
I can't connect to the song and it doesn't move me. Sorry. A bit kitschy...
They screem on top of their lungs imagine Miami boys would sing this song will be A lot nicer!
Thnx man
Yeshivah boys choir is a choir of boys, most have squeakier voices because they’re pre-teen… that’s why we listen to the lyrics rather than the vocals. Also, this song is a tribute to the ones that didn’t make it home… it would just be a rlly depressing song if the father didn’t make it home
You like the oil candles over the wax.. 😝
Olive oil is traditionally used on Channukah
Yes, one would wear the tzitzit under the uniform. The mitzvah (God's commandment) offers divine protection (Hebrew: Shemirah).
@@freespeech100 I don't know what the mekor is; I'd have to look it up. But I'm pretty sure that it's a widely accepted part of Yiddishkeit that surrounding yourself with mitzvos provides a shemirah. I'm pretty sure that regarding Mezuzah it's learned from יהוה שמרך יהוה צלך על יד ימינך... יהוה ישמר צאתך ובואך מעתה ועד עולם... (Psalms 121).
So for a great message song sung by a great voice, try Shlock Rock Trust in G-d.
I am not Jewish, but I love this song. It is definitely relevant to the current shit situation since 10/07/2023.
Its funny how you're reviewing this song when Hanukah is in a few weeks from now
YESSS BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
Eli Gerstner is actually quite capable of composing original songs that do not have the same Imi, VI, III, VII chord progression and has proven it on many occasions. I actually like their harmonies better than Miami Boys Choir very often as Eli Gerstner is a genius when it comes to harmony. But overall, in terms of talent, execution, song quality and overall production, Miami Boys Choir is a lot better.
All that being said, this is actually a very fun song from them:

Listen to we are a miracle by yakov shweky
Check out the Maccabeats for Chanukah songs
Not arguing. It's called discussing 😉
The stay with me rlly hit hard 😮💨😮💨😭
Love this song!!!!
The harmonys are amazing!!
I'm in navy quarantine let's be real.
So here was a song that I was really crazy about and after hearing your reaction I’m like…hmmm…maybe it’s not as good as I thought…
You can like it even though he doesn't...
Hahah, oh no! So sorry Marc! Didn't mean to ruin it or change your opinion on it 🤣, was just being honest.

I think you'll enjoy reacting to this. It's an oldie with Benny Friedman and another guy, Isaac Honig. Live gig (wedding I believe)
Another Recomendation for Levi Falkowitz all In English ruclips.net/video/fhDvY2eS5_4/видео.html&ab_channel=shiezoli
I don't know how to be gentle with that, and I don't want to offend anyone, but I just don't like that song. At all. I feel they're over-trying, very much, too hard to evoke emotions, trying to force you get emotinal and it doesn't feel good. It makes me feel very uncomfortable.
I feel very antagonistic right now...
Interesting, I feel the same way... like it's very put on and trying to pull at heartstrings. Doesn't feel genuine.
100%. although the message is universally emotional one, it comes across as trying way too hard and honestly, just cheesy.
Some of the lyrics are cringey “now he’s holding me for all eternity” just… ehhhh.
I know many people love this song but it was never my taste.
Yiddishkite! (Phonetic English spelling).
Very good and honest reactions if you want to have some fun try yosy shtendig and beri weber it's a dance music video
The YBC video is too "shmaltzy" (cheesy) for my taste. I cannot relate to an American boy in a button-down shirt having a father who is a combat soldier or a fighter pilot in the Israeli army, and so his emotions come over as being just put on
Agreed 100%. Nothing at all against this kid or his real-life dad, But I always find it's a little bit disingenuous when a community where most people think that it's a Shanda of their kid joins the army makes songs all about how great chayalim are and everybody Talks about how amazingly emotional it is..... While actual chayalim in Israel are clearly not held in high regard for being the heroes they are.
Who still has a library?
Here are 2 versions performed live that you may or may not enjoy better.....

It would be great if you can react to the OG Miami boys choir songs form the 80s and 90s.
Please react more to Yaakov shwekey
"I can be"
"Vihi sheamda"
"Shema"
Your comments are extremely astute . The yeshiva boys choir is a poor knockoff of the the Miami Boys choir. They sing in extremely high pitched and somewhat nasal register. You're not the only one !
Are the miami boys jewish?
Here's another video of this same song, no need to do a reaction to it, necessarily, since its the same audio. But the remake of the visual part is pretty intense and REALLY well done. ruclips.net/video/AO9rg4Zmb1A/видео.html
Alvin and the chipmunks is the perfect description
I'm in agreement with your reaction. Nice sentiment and nice song but , the singer;s voice and choir is not to my liking. I personally don't like the high shrieky child screaming/singing voice.
Yeah, I think most of us connect to the song on a deep level for the message and meaning of it , less so because of the voice, I find myself crying to songs that touched me on an emotional level not caring who the singer is while another song from same singer I'll hate cuz of his voice
The song is a really old song. I believe that it's the bad audio quality.
I don’t know if this is a specific war, maybe someone here knows better, there have been so many military operations in Israel that it could be any number of them. Israeli soldiers are always aware there unfortunately may be some action at any moment.
THeres another version of this music video which is way sadder
This is not such a popular song I was laughing every time I saw it in the comments ….
Dude this is one of my all time favorite songs
