Hey Paul, that's truly sad. I absolutely love the realness of all Tom's music.
I believe some people are just there for the sound, not the lyrics. There are some people who compare artists by their beats selection and say, "THEIR BEATS WERE BETTER!", "NO HIS BEATS SUCK!" Instead of understanding the words being said in their songs. It seems the artist says things they don't want to hear, and/or they'd just rather hear instrumental music because they're to lazy trying to pick out the lyrics and try summarizing them.
It's so refreshing to hear people coming together through Tom's music. I'm a 65 year old white woman and I never understood racism. All I have ever seen are humans. We gotta stop treating each other poorly and come together. Thank you for your reactions.

Everybody chose their side, and started throwing shit and taunting the other side. They also began to taunt centrists for sitting on the fence and changing how they lean depending on the issue. The majority of this country seems to have forgotten the Founding Fathers warned against political parties. They wanted us to be a nation of centrists that were always open to new ideas or solutions, and that didn't pick a side.

I love how honest you are, and saying you felt like crying. I cried when I listened to “If I Was Black” because I never looked at it from the other side either. As if I was in your shoes. I know the issues, I grew up in a very diverse, poor neighborhood. But that song made me actually step into the shoes, instead of just acknowledging the shoes. Tom is doing big things. And so are you guys!
My parents also taught me to be respectful and kind to all people as well. My father is 88 years old. He said his father taught him the same. Great reaction

I love the line "we have so much in common". I interpret that to mean that all of us get judged and abused based on our skin colour, so why fight about it? It's never gonna end until we all start putting ourselves in the other's shoes.
Being white myself, I can tell you that the majority of the people I know feel like this. For those of us who aren't actual racists, that feel far superior to anyone else, we're constantly watching ourselves to make sure we don't say anything that could be interpreted as offensive in the slightest, even though we know we're not going to say anything offensive or abusive.
In my opinion and through lived experiences, there's a lot of pressure on white people to feel guilty about the struggles people of colour went through, or like they deserve what they get, because of our ancestors, but the issue is, the majority of us know what happened was wrong and should never have happened, nor happen again, which is why a lot of us are still fighting for equality today- we're not just "white", we're human; we love, we care, we want equality, we want the liberty we were all born with, and we want what's right, but at the same time, we don't want to be made to feel like we're still the problem, especially as a lot of people can be very abusive about it. It's kind of like damned if you do, damned if you don't. You try and help, but it doesn't make a difference... And we're constantly reminded of what some of our white ancestors did, long before some of us were even a thought, which doesn't help at all.
I'm 22, so not too old, but I couldn't tell you the amount of times I've been on the receiving end of racial slurs for being white, everything from name calling to being spat in the face while waiting for a freaking bus, of all things. It was humiliating and made me feel so bad- yet I never say anything, because I feel like there's an unspoken law that says I'm not allowed to, and I also fear that if I say anything, I'll be called racist (learned from experience when I was younger and flat out said "stop being so racist, not all white's are bad" I was then laughed at for saying that before being given a lecture about how it's not possible for white people to feel the effects of racial hatred and discrimination.)
I blame the media and politicians for me feeling that way. I also blame them for having a role in spreading this hatred, because they have a way of conditioning people to think a certain way, and reading/watching hateful things towards a group of people just fuels the fire.
Sometimes it feels like they want us to be angry and to hate each other. The problem is, for as long as it's being twisted around a narrative, it's never gonna stop. Pride, ego, a sense of being owed something, and guilt gets in the way.
There are definitely racist people out there, not all of them are white, but those motherfuckers need to be called out and punished, because they are also part of the problem.
We just don't want to feel guilty or portray ourselves as victims, we don't want sympathy or special treatment, we just want people to understand that this also affects us. Sure, we don't experience a lot of what people of colour do, and we probably won't ever experience what their ancestors did either, and I feel so grateful and lucky for that, however, we still feel, we still deal with racial prejudice and racial abuse and humiliation, and we still deal with what feels like certain unwritten expectations of us to try and prove we're not racist. I find that's why oftentimes you'll hear a white person say "I'm not racist". Don't get me wrong, racists will also say that, so I can see why people will roll their eyes at it.
I just want to stress that when I say "we" in reference to white people, I'm referring to myself and people I know who share similar feelings. I can't speak for the majority, but I can speak for myself as a white person.
I can't speak for a person of colour either, but I think it's safe for me to say that we all want to be understood. That is another thing we have in common. We need to realise this and stop letting other people (like the media) tell us how we should think and feel about each other. For example, when BLM were protesting this year, I saw countless negative portrayals about it, I felt like they were purposefully trying to make me angry, and it's so strange, because I know a lot of people from diverse backgrounds, and not a single one of them have an ounce of hatred or evil in them. If they did, I wouldn't know them.
I hope one day, we'll all understand each other, be able to communicate with each other, start protecting and looking out for each other, and move forward together.
Thank you both for being so open minded about the message in this video, and for taking the time to actually listen, and not immediately resorting to "victim playing", like many people, of all races do, when it comes to topics such as this. There's a real struggle here on both "sides", and we need open minded people... Now more than ever.
Only we as a collective can make that change. Imagine how nice it would be if we could just cut the crap, be proud as compassionate human beings, and stand together to end ALL forms of racial injustice and guilt on ALL levels, and to make sure we never experience this kind of ugly, inhuman way of life again.

This was the song where I found Tom. I admire his parents for raising him to see everyone as equal. My parent's are racist, I got in a huge fight with my dad over having mexican friends, my time in the military solidified my belief in not judging people by their skin color. I served with all colors, they were my brothers. And to this day, many in my family don't like that I identify as a human being instead of white. But I also don't talk to many of them anymore. You got a new sub here.
