  • THE FIRST NATIONAL GUN CONFERENCE took place on 4th August 2024.
We heard from former senators David Leyonhjelm and Nigel Scullion about the challenges faced by Aussie shooters, then from Tom Kenyon, CEO of SSAA National, Senator Bridget McKenzie, SUA National Vice President, David Brown and Jake McCoull from the Libertarian Party (WA).
There were some technical issues along the way but the conference achieved what we had set out to do, which was to 'prove the concept' of a national discussion around the problems we are experience in every state and territory for the benefit of other key players in our industry.
It's a three hour event, so we will develop a series of excerpts that will help shooters better understand how we can deal with this problem, and help shooting organisations how they can be part of this exciting but necessary initiative.
This is just the first such event. We are already looking at planning for the second National Gun Conference, with the eventual aim of making this an in-person event that is also streamed for every shooter. If you are part of a shooting organisation, make sure your executive gets to see what role they can play.

Thanks Ardeet. Yes, the signs are encouraging. We'll keep moving in that direction.

It might be beneficial to use the description "Sporting Arms" rather than guns and firearms.

I managed to catch some of it live and will definitely watch the rest, it is a great achievement by all involved well done. I would like to suggest go forward that a rethink of the the conference name to something like national small arms conference or alike only because mainstream media have it so well ingrained that when you say guns most people automatically think crime and that’s the kind of negative preconceptions we would want to avoid. Again great work and well done

Hey Kevin. Thanks for this. Yes, it went better than hoped. There were some technical issues when live but we managed to fix them in the recording - and this is definitely something we need to keep doing going forward. The name thing is interesting - it's something that I'll put on our list for when we reconvene to look at NGC Mk2.

Absolutely agree with the name change suggestion. Australia has an entrenched attitude issue about ‘guns’.
firearms, arms or small arms is a much more sensible and correct way to refer our communities interests.
More ideally, we are ‘law abiding firearms owners’ which should be viewed and respected as a benchmark of an upstanding well rounded citizen considering we are subject to the highest level of scrutiny to be licensed.
These points must be at the forefront of how we first present ourselves and to others.

I don't think the title Small Arms Conference would be appropriate as that is the title of an event held by the Aus Defence Force. We should stay away from terms such as weapons and arms do to their military connotations and stay away from the term guns due to media references. We should use the term firearm and talk about sporting and recreational use. Perhaps a title of Sports and Recreational use of firearms in Australia.

Can all our firearm 'bodies' get together and start educating the public on firearms? We should be seeing material from the shooting groups in mainstream media that educates the average Australian on the use of firearms in AUS so they are less inclined to agree with all the BS that's out there and being peddled by the major political parties.

Thanks to the group but I feel that more non firearm owners need to converted and my question would be that in Wa is what is being proposed legally and constitutionally possible. Thanks again

WAFCA in my opinion, have failed. They did very little and did not tell the shooters what was happening or what to do next. Working behind the scenes to accomplish nothing.

Yes, they did (fail). You just cannot form a group and rattle the cage with no real follow through. They ran the TV ad which was good, but that could not be sustained due to funds. Hats off to them for trying that, but their real opportunity was to shift votes at the next election - and they abandoned that. The next election is still a long way off - but that does not excuse lack of action. The WA industry needs to learn from groups that have gone down that path before - such as Grass Roots North Carolina. They need to read "Rules for ANTI-Radicals: A Practical Handbook for Defeating Leftism" to understand what political action looks like. They needed to get their hands dirty - but were instead deer caught in headlights.

I know of multiple SSAA WA Clubs that do not have their own ranges but have to hire and share them with existing clubs. No help from SSAA to get new ranges.
