Montmartre is a historic and quirky neighborhood in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, France.
The word 'montmartre' literally translates to "hill" or "mountain (qua) of martyrs'. In Roman times, it was called mons martis after Mars, the God of War.
What is now Champ de Mars ("Field of Mars") was once mined for gypsum; but it soon became covered in gardens and vineyards when quarrying moved elsewhere.
It's home to bustling streets lined with cafes, cafés and bars as well as art galleries and antique stores - all making it a must-see tourist destination.
