- The Narrowboat is at Hemel Hempstead for a short stay. I quite enjoyed the busy place although I didn't do a lot of shopping. I met a fella who grew tomatoes from a boat and some Boxmoor Cows.

Was thinking ‘old Hemel’ looked familiar. Google searched, ‘pie in the sky’ filmed there. Shame when you have to check if something is a real memory, or off the telly.

Stripy cows: In Dutch: 'Lakenvelders' (Bos Taurus).
I can honestly say the Dutch language is one of those that I find difficult to pronounce. When I lived in Germany, on the German/Dutch boarder, I loved going to Arnheim and Eindhoven for a night out. Very talented people the Dutch. You speak English very well and understand German if not able to speak that too. Brilliant. Lovely country. Thanks for the comment mate.
Chris. You made a number of people laugh on the tram towards Lugano. You delivered the line about him not liking tommies perfectly. Made me laugh out loud..and the reaction was hilarious.
On another topic. Bungs. In the OZ military we had ration packs A-E. each one contained Vietnam era tinned cheese which was affectionately known as bungey. Cured the trots in a pinch by bunging you up😅.

I remember cheese in a tin for compo rats. Cheese processed or as we called it cheese possessed. All that stuff I believe was made to bung you up. A blue roll patrol with a shovel didn't happen that often.

I found it very funny that you thought the full house looked nice! It's the roughest pub in the whole of Hertfordshire! If you want to live your life without cuts or limbs missing, don't go there!
It maybe a little rough as all 'spoons' pubs give that impression. I only had a look in but I must have gone on a good day as I didn't get that feel. Different at night of course. My days of going out are almost over. I'm a lightweight now and like the quieter life. Thanks for the comment Rosie.
Berkhamstead is lovely .We moored there for six weeks when we had the boat . You will enjoy. My husband and I were married in Albury Village on the edge of the Ashridge estate where my husband was bought up .
The Ashridge Estate is very nice. I played golf a few time on the Ashridge Club. Very nice but I can't say I did the course justice and think that was the last place I played before hanging up my clubs. Berkie on the Grand is a lovely place too. Thanks Lynne.

i think there are about 40 give or take a few tomato varieties and yes there is a black one, guess how many varieties there are from potatos...
I suspect just as many. I just look for the potatoes that I can make into all sorts of mash. Small one and big ones and the tomatoes I saw on the shelves that aunt red were just not ripe yet. How daft am I? Thanks for the comment Jean-Pierre. How many types of potatoes by the way?

Viewer #3 this evening. You'd like our elusive native squirrels on the BC coast. The cities are full of European squirrels, but the Douglas Squirrel is very different. They're tiny, can make a lot of noise, and mostly sound like a bird. One kind of local wildlife that won't kill you, but will criticise you mercilessly if you annoy them.
I used to grow black tomatoes in the public garden because no one knew what they were and therefore didn't steal them. Also, Green Zebra tomatoes. Both are sweet and tasty, but neither produces a lot per plant. Not ideal for onboard a narrowboat.
All you're missing is a dictionary of word origins section. I always enjoy that sort of reference book because so many subjects tie into the meaning and origin of words. I'm sure there must be books about the origin of place names, too.
The wee hairy coos seem so good-natured, but being the size they are, it's probably wise not to find out if they have a bad side.
Wildlife is fascinating. I'm starting to understand the water bird life a bit more. Birds will come as I get to the different brands but we are rather short on squirrel types although they are fun to watch.
I didn't know there were so many types of tomatoes. A prper impromptu education.
I'm looking at starting word of the week and try to get in conversation in the correct context. That's an education as well. I was mindful of the cows as there were big. Thanks Pete. Hope you are well.

Hi Lee. The great thing about the comments is that I'm learning there are man variants of wildlife that I never new about. Ginger, Grey's Black and now Grey with a white tail. I'll be coming through Hemel again next year. I'll look out for the for that Ginger one as well as others. They'll all evade the camera though. Thanks for the comment mate.

Dawn and I love that stretch of the GU and moor up opposite the Wharf House between the Crystal Palace and The Boat pubs in Berko. Lots of footfall during the day and some train noise but a wonderful place to stay.
What are your cruising plans for Winter? Are you coming further North?

Next time in Hemel you must visit its most infamous, intriguing and controversial feature - The Magic Roundabout (and subway "galleries"). It's just four hundred yards from Two Waters bridge (151). I'm a fan, many aren't. Back in the seventies of last century it was "revolutionary".
I've driven the magic roundabout and to be honest its quite easy but it didn't cross my mind to film it. It would have made a good bit of filming B roll. I too think they're quite a good idea to keep traffic moving. Swindon has it too and I think that one is a bit more complex. Thanks Terry.

I haven't seen the Hemel Magic Roundabout's subway "art" but hear it's worth a look - next time maybe. OR maybe GE's "Street View" has walked through - that does some towpaths, I'll take a gander.
The subway art has now all gone including and the graffiti is getting more. your just five minutes from boxmoor where I live I frequently walk along the canal in the dryer weather

Perhaps it's not as Ginger as some but has a brownish/Strawberry Blond look. Anyway, it's different to the average and didn't many to get it on film to prove the fact. Often saw it but never with my camera in hand. Typical. Thanks for the comment Christine.
Another grand vlog there .... I grew up in Leicester and in the 70s most of the squirrels here were red ... then by the 90s we could only find greys ... and as a redhead that's turned grey myself it's kinda sad really .... watching your vlogs has started giving me urges to dust off my old Nikon D7000 though it has to be said .... I've been slack on the photography for several years now mainly due to my focus on painting & drawing but I'm thinking more and more about going out for reference image hunting .... that's my long term pipe dream really .... to raise enough money to buy a boat and plop around the UK painting and selling my work from the towpath to avoid the 50% that high street galleries take .... it's a hard life as an independent artist when it comes to making money but I have a few irons in the fire of the New York Stock Exchange that may , fingers crossed, raise a boat fund eventually ... hope all is well with yourself & family and thank you for another inspiring vlog ... I much prefer vlogs from people like yourself than mainstream TV ... Not had a TV for about 12 years now and really don't miss it at all thanks to real people like you ... cheers 🙂
I can understand the difficulty of making a living as an artist. My mate Tony - who joined me on the boat when it was launched, does the same thing as you. But it must be nice making a living doing and living what you love doing. I think it will be just as hard on a boat as the footfall is always changing. I do wonder about those who have a business on the canals. But I suppose with a website and a sign outside the boat that is part of a 'push and pull' strategy people to in and leads to the internet is just one way.
I have a D7500 that I must dust off myself. I generally use the D5600 as I use that for vlogging and its out. Good luck on the Stock Market. I'm starting to find my feet on the boat and I think I get a 1% gain in enjoyment each week. It's not as easy as it's made out. I'm going to talk about that soon.Thanks for watching and the comment.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Aye I know boat life is a serious commitment and by no means easy ..... but to me that's the price of freedom ....I ran away from home at 12 years old and from a lot of childrens homes therafter till I was 16 and could get a job to stand on my own 2 feet ... I prefered sleeping rough to comfort if it meant freedom of movement .... 1% weekly gains is pretty good to me .... that's indicative that you are growing to really love it at a healthy pace .... in a world full of empty, illusionary, instant gratification it's good to strive towards something more challenging and rewarding .... but you know all this ... your boat name indicates it .... and it's been a pleasure to watch it all materialise from the base plate going down to the beautiful vessel she's become ..... I hope it all brings you a long, happy and rewarding life ... happy trails 🙂
Hi Chris. 2 things. 1). Did you find loose leaf tea yet? and 2). Hand saw.... Once you're cutting, just try extending your trigger finger as you cut. You might find it makes you feel more comfortable.

Thanks for the tip with the saw. I'll certainly give it a go next time. Infact I'll do it tomorrow so I don't forget and get it ingrained in my mind. As for loose leaf, No, is the short answer. There are all sorts of makes but never 'Red Label'. There is PG and Tetly and other brands but I find them a bit bit weak. I'm still on the hunt. Thanks Michael.

That's a lot of tomato variety. For me they taste much the same. I generally get small red ones as they can be used easily in so many dishes and easy to store. Thanks for the comment Colin and Heather.
Glad you enjoyed your time in Hemel, though strictly speaking you were in Boxmoor which is one of the outlying villages that make up the town. I probably walked past your boat on one of my canal walks recently. The cows are Belted Galloways and also admired by the Rev Richard Coles who passed by a few weeks ago. Soft natured as I understand so a gentle push would get them out of the way of the gate over the River Bulbourne which has been the subject of work by the Boxmoor Trust to slow the flow and re-instate it as a chalk stream. The Wetherspoons Full House isn't that bad though the company is probably a bit more salubrious in The Monks Inn which is to the right as you cross the market square ( no market anymore sadly ) at 11 mins 30. Like anywhere, Hemel has it's good bits and it's crap bits but on balance we're happy here having moved from East London 20 years ago
Rev Coles is a funny bloke and to think he was part of the Communards as well; well he would ned to have a sense of humour I suppose. Enjoyed Boxmoor. I would rather stay there (Fisheries) than anywhere else to be honest. A little more out the way but a short walk into town. I like the Spoons pubs. The price point for it's food and beer is about right as far as I'm concerned. It's just pub grub. Not overpriced. Shame about the market square. I reckon in it's day, it would have been great. I suspect the landlord of the square was charging too much. I see plenty of shops empty these days in small town where I suspect the rent overpricing is the reason for stifling entrepreneurship.
East London has changed in the past 20 years or so. The Isle of Dogs needed re-generation but now, you don't hear many real 'Cockneys' in that area anymore. There was a fella who past on the towpath near Uxbridge who just said, 'nice narra' in that way that a Cockney would. Loved it. Thanks Chris.
Usual amusing and interesting vlog my brother in arms. I awoke early this morning feeling miserable forgetting you would be on and would cheer me up. By the way brown squirrels are rare but do exist. Hopefully you will get a photo one day. Stay safe and well.

If you don’t know they made a film around Rickmansworth to Tring called The Bargee. It’s well worth watching for the backdrop most of which fans gone.

Hi Chris. Late to the comments again, the next one will be out soon! Thanks for showing us around old Hemel, some really nice old buildings - I’ve lived locally for over forty years and never been to the old town. I spotted the squeegee being used on the boat, bet that speeds up the process was there’s a lot of metal to wipe. What are you doing with the spare time now you’ve reduced the vlogs - hopefully enjoying the changing surroundings and getting some good photos. Looks like you’ve headed quite far north now so with weather getting more miserable the paddle may well be hung up soon - perhaps next year I’ll paddle past again. Hope all is well and your still enjoying the boat.
Thanks for the comment Darren. In short: I think a lot of people, regardless of where they live miss parts of life in their local area. I know I have. Squeegee absolutely speeds things up and I've almost perfected how I use it to gain maximum efficiency.
Spare time; don't have any as winter time takes up so much more time. I must be doing it wrong so I have asked others. Most agree! Don't blame you for hanging up the paddle. It's getting cold on the water. The central heating is set to come on at 10degrees. It has each day in the morning this week. Passing through next year. Thanks mate.

When photographing wildlife, camera settings: shutter speed priority set to 500th of a second and ISO on auto. The camera will work out the aperture for you.
I know there is a reason why I find wildlife photography so difficult. I'll remember those setting for next time. Thanks Henry.

Hi Chris, I live on the ground floor of the apartments across the canal from where you were moored. Your elusive squirrel is actually a grey squirrel with ginger fur. I have some great close up photos of her (definitely a her, she had babies earlier this year) from times she has come up near the apartments. I can happily send you some if you would like.
Hi Jamie. Nice place to live with the green bit of grass and stream between the flats and the canals. I saw a ground floor flat with the french doos open and a lady feeding the squirrel. It's what drew me to the it on the first place. If you want to send me a pic that would be nice. I could use it in a vlog. Never did get a pic of it. I wonder if she says in Squirrel language 'I'm not ginger, I'm strawberry blonde'.

Hi just thought I might say loved your trip around hickle bumstead lived the first 21yrs of my life there my kids and some of my grandkids still do but I never go into the town when visiting so was great to see the old town exactly as I remembered to new part lots of changes.On your trip when you have done Berco the Wendover arm is nice then next is the Aylesbury arm again very nice but this arm suffers badly from lack of water and lots of reed making it really hard work so check before you go to save a lot of trouble and being stuck for days
I'm pleased I did the old town justice then. I thought it had character and would be the sort of place I would like to have gone out for a beer. However, those days, are almost over: Almost. The new town had shops that were useful despite lacking character. Wendover and Aylesbury were places I wanted to visit and still will but I need to get to Northampton for Christmas and don't want to rush. I've heard the Aylesbury Arm is a little low on water and high on weed - There's a good phrase! I'm going to give both a miss this year and visit Spring 23. Thanks for the comment mate.

Hi Steve. Surprising not. I thought that might be the case but so far they have been ok. That said, I don't leave them in during the day. They do feel cold in the morning so it would take long before I'm sure they would get wet.
Thanks, Chris, for the explanation of the bungs. I had completely forgotten about them, but once you showed it, I remembered that, many videos ago, you were choosing material for the bungs, and I think you explained there what they were for.
They’re a great idea, and I’m sure they must save a great deal of heat. I expect that they’re a nice tight fit and you won’t get much condensation forming on the window overnight.

Thanks for the tour of Hemel Hempstead. I’ll scrub it from my list of places to see. Like everywhere else, there are some grubby-looking areas (and some pretty ones, too).

Thanks for the comment and support as always Martin. I've never been to Hemel before despite having lived nearby for over 6 years of my life at Halton. I can see why but as a boater, a great place that the canals runs through to get all sorts of stuff. I generally went to B&Q and Aldi.

This man knows his angles , he made hemel look fantastic, however Chris the old cinema now spoons is to be avoided at all costs , don't get sucked in there we will never get you back !

Great vid I have moored many times in hemel its a nice place. I have always got a bit concurrent activity going on. good to see a norwigen shirt mine fell apart a few years ago. 👍
Thanks Peter. CAKE is still used most days well at least the CA part. The Norgi has a few holes but it was worth the money. I think I bought that one before it was on issue. So...late 80s I bought that at the Catterick military shop. I suppose it's only in the field I wore it so not really a good comparison and not an everyday item like it is now.
Greggs still have the best sausage rolls. I wish we had them here in Oz.
Greggs are a treat. I love their food but....you can spend an awful lot in there and as the food is so good, it good quickly become a must have every time I pass. Agreed and thanks for the comment.
I think the cow wanted it's ear scratching it knows you want to go through the gate it's rubbing it's ear on the gate as I'm writing this you mentioned Marlow which to my surname bit of de ju Vue there
My aim was to see if it let me but I chickened out, If it wanted to have a pop at me, that short burst of energy with a half ton of meat surging towards me at pace could do some damage.
I lived very close to Marlow a few years ago - Medmenham. Liked the place. Have you ever been there? A bit pricey and very much like Birkie-on-the-Grand. Thanks for the comment Bryan.
I live about quarter of a mile further up from where you saw your squirrel, and we have had black ones before, as well as otters.
That little Squirrel evaded my every move. I saw it often when I didn't have the camera with me. However, it's not the only animal. There is a Kingfisher I see at Northchurch who does the same thing. I'm heading to Dudswell and Bring and still the wildlife appear to understand when I have the camera with me. I didn't have the patience to sit still which is half the problem. I will go back to that mooring spot again and hope I'll be a bit more lucky. Thanks for the comment Andrew. Otters would be good.

Not sure if I’m commenting on the right vlog as RUclips does my head in in the way it tries to control your actions …. however, I digress. You passed a boat with Aynho painted on the side and you struggled over the pronunciation. It’s Ey No or Hay No and it’s a lovely wharf on the South Oxford. Great moorings after Aynho going south ….. which is where we live! See you one day when you’re passing!
Thanks for the comment. It’s appreciated as I like to think this channel is about people I meet on the canals. Unfortunately, not everyone wants to be on camera which I understand. Thanks also for the pronunciation of the boat name. When I go down the Oxford you’ll be aware as I’ll be heading that way at some stage. Currently, despite what you see on the vlogs, I’m heading back south on the GU to make it easier to see the children who live in the London area. Have a great week.

Re that loose leaf tea, Tesco own label brews up like proper builders tea.
I shall look out for that next time I go to Tesco and thanks for the suggestion of the tip for tea. Own brands are often as good as named brands and in the case of tea, I'm finding them better. Cheers Michael.

Hi Deborah. No, short answer. I saw it a few time but never with my camera. It knew and it always looked over as if to say, 'got you again'. A link to the bungs, I don't know as they were part of the price of the boat. The shop is a small place in Derby. If your interested, I'll ask Mark for the shop details. I took a long time choosing the material as there was so many books to look through and get the right feel and texture. This boat building was more detailed than I thought, and i didn't do any of the work!

Another good vlog, Chris. I'm trying to convince my neighbours to construct a "squirrel suit" for their hyper-murderous Chihuahua so it can take to the skies & do battle with real squirrels. The suit could be red, I guess - but black would cleverly disguise it as a bat. So far they're not heeding my suggestion.
I'm laughing as I read that comment Simon. Not my favourite dog but that suit would warm me to it.

Great Chris, Absolutely Great… it’s nice to see the towns and villages and history of the architecture. Really enjoyable, you should write a guide of old pubs by the canal 😊
There is a fella that does 'Pub of the week' but to be honest, I don't really go in the pubs. That said, I've been in two recently. I generally drink Lime and Soda except yesterday I had four pints, a double and single and was a little tipsy. Such a lightweight these days.

Birkie-on-the-Grand is a great little market town. The shops are busy but not a place I would shop. No prices on the stuff other than the charity shops. Good gear in those shops mind you. Thanks for the comment Gary.
Another entertaining vlog Chris. Loved the bit about the tomato guy who doesn't like 🍅🤣😂. Red Squirrels - there is a red squirrel sanctuary at Formby, right on the coast, near Southport. There's loads of the little bleeders and you can feed them... Quite tame. If you ever go on the Leeds Liverpool canal its just a short jaunt to get to there.
Thanks for the tip and I was walking the towpath a few days ago and a little Robin appeared to be as tame. I got a few pics of it too to prove it. It's one of the few times I actually had the camera at the right time. Leeds and Liverpool canal has locks that are too small for my boat unfortunately. Thanks for the comment Wayne.

Hi Bernie. I have a Barrus Shire 50. A bit bigger than most but it’s a slightly bigger boat and I want to cruise on the rivers occasionally. Best to have a little more power. Also, the servicing schedule is every 350 hrs which is longer than some other engines. It all adds up to be a wise decision. Have a great week.
