I have been trying to learn shuttle tatting for over 20 years. I never got the hang of it until I watched your videos. I gave up trying for so long because I never thought I'd manage it. Thank you so much for helping me learn this beautiful craft!!! I'm working on this edging right now. It isn't perfect, but it's mine, made from my own two hands!!!
What a lovely comment Fairy Fay! It's music to my ears. :-) I'm so glad I've helped you get started with tatting, and well done on making your first tatted edging!
This is the perfect pattern and video to share with my 3 young grand daughter tatters. You've taught me so many aspects of tatting... and I'm passing it on to the next generation. Enjoy the birds in the garden, would love to sit and tat in such a setting.
❤💜💙I just started a couple nights ago needle tatting! ( can’t wait to start learning with shuttle, too!) I love this design so much and the time you take helping us, that I was determined to learn this pattern on a needle while I was waiting for my shuttle items package to come through that I ordered this morning! I did it! It’s rough, but all the stitches and picots are there. I also noticed how much better it looks as I go along! It’s so beautiful! I’m enjoying it immensely! Thank you!
Thank you so much , you are an excellent teacher! When I was a student nurse ( back in the days of matrons, starched caps and aprons!) a fellow student taught me how to tat, and I took to it easily. Recently , 46 years later, I came across the shuttle she gave me , but couldn’t remember how to tat. Having seen other tutorials I just couldn’t get the hang of it .... until I found you ! Thank you again , I could watch and listen to you all day 🙂
Thank you for slowing this down. I finally understand what is happening! I started tatting this week, but went with needle tatting because it made more sense. Now I understand the shuttle tatting, and will have to try that.
Aha, I was reversing my work by turning it right to left, left to right, not up to down, down to up. No wonder things weren't coming out flat! Very clear indeed, a nice speed for beginners like me, thank you!
I tatted 25 years ago and I’m going on a long trip, what better craft to do ? You are very clear and thorough, thank you. I needed to refresh my skill.
Thank you so much for all of these tutorial for beginners, I just found out about tatting about a week ago and start to learn it from your videos. It's very helpful. I still try to find the correct threads to work with though, because my hand are still stiff, and I'm using a cheap shuttle, but I'm really enjoying the learning process. Once again, thank you
You're welcome Ria! I'm always glad to hear about people inspired to learn to tat. I have several other beginners' videos on my channel, I hope they're helpful to you. Good luck! :-)
I made this as a edging for a handkerchief for my Mom this Christmas. The elements are nice and small and the pattern simple to remember. It was just perfect for me to work on during lunch breaks and while on the bus. She was so pleased with it! Thanks so much for sharing!
Going through your beginners playlist, and I just want to thank you so much fpr the effort you put into these videos!! They make it all so clear and understandable! ♡♡♡
Thanks, as always very useful! Tutorial. I love the way you explain the steps, and I am very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge. It is difficult to find someone who teaches the art of tatting, with a shuttle. And continue doing tutorials. Thank you.
Thank you for your videos! Your clear instructions are easy to learn from. I have played and replayed your videos several times and now I am comfortable with shuttle tatting. I look forward to learning more and becoming faster. Thank you!
This pattern is, indeed, very effective and pretty! I love shuttle and ball method. Yes, I hear the lovely birds...wonderful. Better than honking cars. The speed is perfect! Excellent! Very helpful and an easy pattern to carry everywhere I go to give me something to do. I would love to see how you join at the end of a round. Either to finish the pattern or move to the next row. Thank you for this!
You're very welcome Maria. Ending the round would be simple: you would just need to make sure you join the very last ring on both sides (to the previous ring and also to the very first ring of the round) and then join the last chain at the beginning, back where you started. I'll put your idea on my list though, if you think a video would be helpful. :-)
Tucking in the ends is a thought that occurs as I am in the middle of tatting. I have tried the magic loop (no luck) and also a knot. I believe I need more practice.
I used to do a lot of tatting when I was a young girl, i.e. 40 years ago. Due to covid-19, I'd like to start doing it again. Thank you for this excellent tutorial, it's really refreshing and very helpful. Thanks again.
Thank you for your patience with beginners.. Fyi, if your viewers tap on screen... at the top of the screen, tap on the three dots then on popup screen they can tap and choose the playback speed to slow the tape...
Hi Kajon, yes, thank you for your comment, I always forget to suggest that option! It's good to slow down the video but the only problem with it is... it makes me sound like I've got slurred speech when viewing a slower speed! :-)
I'm super excited to make this, this is exactly the kind of pattern I have been looking for in order to strengthen my basic knowledge and actually produce something tangible. 💖
Thank you so much for all the tatting videos, love them. I could make the edging beautifully. Been trying many times to learn tatting, succeeded because of you, thank you.
Many thanks for doing all your videos for beginner tatting. I tried tatting over 30 years ago from books but never got the hang of it so put the shuttle to one side and got on with lots of other fibre crafts. However the other day your tatting videos grabbed my attention and, after lots of rummaging in my stash, I found my shuttle and threads and settled down to watch you. After several attempts I have made this edging but my hands haven't got used to holding the threads in my left hand yet! I don't have very bendy fingers it seems! I have also discovered your blog and will catch up with your posts in the future. Happy tatting!
Hello Rachel, thank you for your comment. I'm very glad to hear you have picked up your shuttles again. I wish you much pleasure in re-discovering tatting.
Thank you for these excellent tutorials! I have a project where I’ve decided the best way to get lace that looks how I want is to make it. Your beginners series of lessons was more than enough to get me going on basic motifs in a few evenings! Now to get a bit faster…
Beautiful. I just found you (June 9, 2023). I learned to tat in the late 1970's. I've never see a shuttle with a hook for joining rings. Where can I find one? Thank you. 😊
Hi Nancy, apologies for the late reply! If you look up "Aero tatting shuttle", you should find shuttles with hooks. That's the kind I use although I modify and decorate mine (I regularly have some for sale in my Etsy shop, should you be interested: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/lacossette). There are other brands with hooks but sometimes the tension can be a problem.
You are an excellent teacher. I have learnt a lot from you. I would like to know why my stitches are loose, specially while joining to a previous picot. If I tighten it, there is an adamant knot and the thread refuses to pull. Please throw light.
Hello, it's a little difficult to advise you without seeing your tatting. Which part is loose when joining? Can you try to describe a bit more what you mean?
I've just started learning using your videos, they are so easy to understand. Thank you! The shuttle I'm using is from my boyfriends bother, it doesn't have a hook or a bobbin. I'd like to try with a shuttle like that but u can't find one. Yours are beautiful, where are they from please?
Hello Rachael, apologies for the delay in answering your comment. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. I make the shuttles I use in my videos and I regularly have some for sale in my Etsy shop if you're interested: www.etsy.com/shop/lacossette Otherwise, you can find plain shuttles with hooks and bobbins if you look for Aeros or Aerlits.
So when you make the chain, you use the ball thread, and when you make the rings, you use the shuttle thread? Is that correct? Also thank you so much for your videos; they have taught me all I know about shuttle tatting!
Yes, that's correct when working with ball and one shuttle. Well, you use the ball thread and the shuttle for chains and just the shuttle for rings. Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you are finding the videos useful. :-)
Hello! Thank you for your video! I’m getting a little confused with the rings though..I can’t get past doing the second ring - I use the shuttle thread, but then when I go to pull to tighten the ring in then left with a long loop of thread hanging from the bottom, it won’t let me pull from the shuttle side as that’s the thread I’ve used to make the knots! I’ve tried and tried again but I keep getting stuck at this point! Could you please clarify which thread to use to make the rings and which end I pull to tighten the ring?? Thank you again🥰
Hello, sorry you've having trouble completing this pattern, it's not easy for me to advise without actually seeing what you are doing but all rings are to be made only with the thread that comes from the shuttle. The chain is made using the ball thread combined with the shuttle thread but the rings are made only with the shuttle and its thread. If your stitches are flipped correctly, the thread that comes from your shuttle becomes the core thread and the stitches you are making are "flipped" onto it and then you pull on the thread attached to the shuttle to close the ring. I hope this helps! Good luck!
Hello Anna, have you seen my beginner's video on how to transfer the knot? Usually if a ring doesn't tighten up it's because one or more of the knots have not flipped correctly and therefore does not slide on the core thread to enable you to close the ring.
Hello! Thank you for your comment. Did you see that I already have a video for another one shuttle edging with a corner? It can be found here: ruclips.net/video/KHlyB5nCw_w/видео.html
Hello, usually if the stitches don't slide it's because the knots were not all "flipped" or transferred correctly but it's hard for me to really advise without seeing what you are doing.
Hello, I make the shuttles I use in my videos and regularly have some for sale in my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LaCossette) although there aren't any at the moment as I cannot ship due to Royal Mail recovering from a cyber attack. I hope it gets resolved soon!
I love your videos! I started this edging and I absolutely love it but I've run into a problem. My shuttle is almost empty and I don't know how to reload it. I've never done it before and it's particularly confusing because this method has the ball of thread still attached. Can you help me please?
Ok, yes, ideally, you would wind yourself a couple of bobbins full before you start so you won't have to cut your ball thread (something I should have mentioned as the beginning of this video!) but as you have already started, you will need to cut your ball thread so you can use it to refill your shuttle (unless you have a second ball of the same thread?). Do you have two shuttles? If you do, I would unwind a good amount of thread from the ball before cutting it and wind that onto a second shuttle. You can then use your ball to refill your shuttle and then rejoin your thread. There are several methods to rejoin thread, here are a few videos that show techniques for rejoining thread: ruclips.net/video/WRsU1b-NkUQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Ou-q4q-jqMo/видео.html (from about 3:30) ruclips.net/video/HD2e7PEjJwk/видео.html and in this last one, from 1:30 you can see how you'd insert your ball thread back into a ring before closing it and then tatting over the end. ruclips.net/video/_Kgg04A6Ov0/видео.html There are even more methods but I hope this helps to get you started! In fact your question has inspired me to make a new video to show to show how to rejoin the ball thread.
Hi Jacquline, I'm sorry you're having trouble with your tatting but unfortunately, just from your description, it's hard for me to tell what's going wrong. It's difficulty for me to advise without seeing someone tat.
After 3 years of trying, ive finally gotten the hang of this!! Thank you so much for the incredible video!! Im wondering - my partner wants to use my lace to edge some clothes theyre sweing - could i make a long stretch for them to just cut and use or would i have to make each piece to the measurements they need?
Very glad to hear it's clicking into place for you! You could tat each piece to the measurement which means they would have a neat edge but you can cut tatting. Although if you cut in the middle of a ring or chain, it would unravel. So cutting between elements would be best; you could tie the ends where you have cut or add a tiny dab of glue where you have cut so it doesn't unravel or make sure the ends of the lace are incorporated into a seam of the garment would be another solution.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! You inspired me to try out a new hobby :) I have one question: could i use this edging on a round napkin? or are there special edging patterns for round forms?
Hello, yes I think this would be a good choice to go on a round napkin but I would probably make the bottom rings smaller. You would need to experiment a bit but start by removing a couple of stitches from each ring (say 5-4-4-5, instead of 5-5-5-5) and see it it starts to curve. If not remove another couple of stitches and try 4-4-4-4. Good luck!
Thank you so much for showing us so nicely 😊 although I am still not being able to get the knots correct but I will try. I just request you to tell me one thing....is there a separate type of thread for tatting? Don't we do it with the normal crochet thread?
Hello, I'm sure you'll get there with a bit more practice! For tatting, yes, a crochet thread would work. I use a specific tatting thread in most of my videos (usually Lizbeth) but a crochet thread would work too, as long as it's smooth and tightly twisted so that your knots slide nicely.
What do you do if you run out of thread? How do you attach a new thread? Sorry I just have had no luck finding instructions on this and was hoping maybe you would give a fast explanation. TY so much.
Hi Myrany, there are actually several different ways to add thread depending on circumstances, where you are in your pattern, whether you are using one shuttle or two... but basically you knot your new thread to your old and continue tatting, hiding the loose end into your first few stitches but there are also ways to do it without knots. I have one video that shows how to add thread when working with one shuttle: ruclips.net/video/NvFYKeNt8w0/видео.html but your question makes me think I should probably work on some new videos that show different ways to add thread when you run out.
Hello, I'm sorry but I do not know the answer to your question as I've not made this for a whole handkerchief (only the sample you see in this video) but this wouldn't require a lot of thread. The only thing I can suggest if you want to get a better idea is for you to tat a sample of it (say a couple of repeats), see how much thread it takes, and then measure how many repeats you need to go around your hanky and multiply the amount of thread by the number of repeats.
If you're just making rings and chains, you can use a shuttle and ball. If you're making reverse direction chains or rings thrown off the chains, then you'll need two shuttles.
Hello, thanks for subscribing. I do try to slow down in the beginners videos (apologies if that's not enough, I'll try to do so even more) but you can also slow down the video by clicking on the settings at the bottom of the video window.
Hi Anne, you could certainly tat this straight onto fabric if you wished. Where there is a picot on the chain, you would join onto the fabric there (pre-pierced holes are really helpful for this).
I know how to make the basic stitch but I can't tell when you make the picot if you are using the first half of the stitch or the second or something different. Are you moving the shuttle under and back over like the first half or over and back under like the second half or something else?
Hello Larisa, the picot is made by leaving a space between two full stitches; so you would complete one double stitch, then leave a space as you make the first half of the next stitch and then complete with the second half.
Hello Rozida, there are different methods but I do it by hand. Sometimes I use a crochet edge around the hanky first and also attach with the crochet into the edging but most of the time I will use small hand stitches. I am finishing an edging now so I will try to make a new video that shows how I do it.
Hello, here are two videos I made on how to attach edgings to fabric: ruclips.net/video/RWXScoCwFC8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/WXf9S4lTAxY/видео.html I hope they help! :-)
Hi Genevieve, that's normal because the knots are made with the thread that is wrapped around your left hand. You need to stop and "feed" more thread into the loop around your left hand when it gets too small.
Thank you so much for responding😊. I now understand. I find your tutorials extremely helpful. I'm so excited to make this edging and many more .. thank you again..
Why does closing the ring on the second round always not close completely and the chain always balls up and I can't get it to close. I have watched the video over and over and feel like I am following the directions but I cannot get thru the second ring. What am I doing wrong?
Hello Teresa, I'm very sorry you are having trouble getting your rings to close but it's very difficult for me to advise you without seeing what you are doing... what do you mean by the "ring on the second round"? Does that mean you are able to close some rings?
@@11Frivole I can close the ring on the first ring but when I reverse my work for the chain and then try to close the second ring I pull it tight and everything just wads up and will not lay flat. I check all thru my tatting to make sure the stitches still slide and they do.
@@teresaprice1817 Oh dear Teresa, I can't quite understand how the problem occurs and again it's so hard to advise without actually see you tatting! If you are able to close the first ring, I cannot understand why you wouldn't be able to close the second if done in the same way. You can try sending me a photo using the link on my channel and I'll see if I can help!
Hello, there is no written pattern as it's such a simple pattern but I'll add a written version in the description box below the video. It's on my to-do list for tomorrow!
Hello, I do have other videos on my channel that explain the stitches and this video is part of a series for beginners which includes videos that demonstrate how to make the stitches as well as videos of easier motifs and designs that can be accomplished by new tatters.
@@11Frivole Perhaps consider adding "Part X" if it is part of a series. That way when An Actual Beginner looks for beginning tutorials they will know to start on a different video.

I hope this helps! Good luck!
Great tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing :)
My pleasure. :-)
Your the first person who has mentioned not to cut the thread
Nice! Glad to hear you found that useful. :-)
Lovely video and it really helpful, but for for some reason my ring doesn't tighten up. I'm not sure where I go wrong?
Hello Anna, have you seen my beginner's video on how to transfer the knot? Usually if a ring doesn't tighten up it's because one or more of the knots have not flipped correctly and therefore does not slide on the core thread to enable you to close the ring.
Love this edging. Ty. I’m sort of a beginner. Followed you great. Ty. Could you do some more edgings and show how to do corners as well ty again.
Hello! Thank you for your comment. Did you see that I already have a video for another one shuttle edging with a corner? It can be found here: ruclips.net/video/KHlyB5nCw_w/видео.html
Where do you purchase your beautiful shuttles?
New learner here, when I practiced the thread from the yarn can be pulled tight but I couldn't not pull the thread from the shuttle??
Hello, usually if the stitches don't slide it's because the knots were not all "flipped" or transferred correctly but it's hard for me to really advise without seeing what you are doing.
Where did you get your shuttle? I love how small it is and the color!
There are several methods to rejoin thread, here are a few videos that show techniques for rejoining thread:
ruclips.net/video/WRsU1b-NkUQ/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/Ou-q4q-jqMo/видео.html (from about 3:30)
ruclips.net/video/HD2e7PEjJwk/видео.html
and in this last one, from 1:30 you can see how you'd insert your ball thread back into a ring before closing it and then tatting over the end.
ruclips.net/video/_Kgg04A6Ov0/видео.html
There are even more methods but I hope this helps to get you started!
In fact your question has inspired me to make a new video to show to show how to rejoin the ball thread.
Thank you I have a question I pull and make one round in second one my thread is blocked to make the round thread doesn't move
@@11Frivole amazing thank you so much!!!
@@11Frivole thank you so so much for taking time to reply my queries ❤️ I am very grateful 💕
You're welcome! My pleasure. :-)
@@11Frivole Wonderful TY so very much for the information!
How much thread would this pattern need for the whole handkerchief? Size 40 and size 20 (if possible)
Hello, I'm sorry but I do not know the answer to your question as I've not made this for a whole handkerchief (only the sample you see in this video) but this wouldn't require a lot of thread. The only thing I can suggest if you want to get a better idea is for you to tat a sample of it (say a couple of repeats), see how much thread it takes, and then measure how many repeats you need to go around your hanky and multiply the amount of thread by the number of repeats.
what is the difference of a ball and shuttle vs shuttle and shuttle and how do you know when to use what.
If you're just making rings and chains, you can use a shuttle and ball. If you're making reverse direction chains or rings thrown off the chains, then you'll need two shuttles.
Love your videos, subscribed, just started to learn, please slow down
Hello, thanks for subscribing. I do try to slow down in the beginners videos (apologies if that's not enough, I'll try to do so even more) but you can also slow down the video by clicking on the settings at the bottom of the video window.
Joelle, could this edging be tatted directly onto the fabric or does it need to be sewed on?
@@11Frivole So you are splitting the stitch with a space and then closing that gap to create the loop? It’s not in between complete stitches, right?
@@larisameschi2458 Hi Larisa, no, the picot is made between two full stitches.
How do you stitch it to the handkerchief . Is it with sewing machine
Hello Rozida, there are different methods but I do it by hand. Sometimes I use a crochet edge around the hanky first and also attach with the crochet into the edging but most of the time I will use small hand stitches. I am finishing an edging now so I will try to make a new video that shows how I do it.
How do you attach the tatting once you have made it?
Hello, here are two videos I made on how to attach edgings to fabric:
ruclips.net/video/RWXScoCwFC8/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/WXf9S4lTAxY/видео.html
I hope they help! :-)
How come my thread being held in my left hand gets to the point I can barely get the shuttle in??
Hi Genevieve, that's normal because the knots are made with the thread that is wrapped around your left hand. You need to stop and "feed" more thread into the loop around your left hand when it gets too small.
Thank you so much for responding😊. I now understand. I find your tutorials extremely helpful. I'm so excited to make this edging and many more .. thank you again..
Very hard to see with tiny thread. Please demo with larger thread so we can see.
What should I do I don't know my mistake
You have to make sure, when you move on to the next ring, that your stitches still slide on your core thread.
I love this....is there a written pattern for this edging? I am a beginner and tried to write it all down without success.
Hello, there is no written pattern as it's such a simple pattern but I'll add a written version in the description box below the video. It's on my to-do list for tomorrow!
@@11Frivole thank you so much! I will be watching for it! ♥️
@@charmer6813 It's there now (it was there yesterday, I don't know if you noticed it). I hope it helps. :-)
@@11Frivole Yes, I noticed late last night. Hopefully with the written and the video I can figure it out. 😉 Thank you and God Bless You!
The speed was good. I can also slow it down some if I need to.
Hi Katrin, yes, it's good to be able to use the variable viewing speed on the videos when needed. :-)
this is very exciting!
Glad you like it! :-)
How to do with Needle please help
Hello, I'm very sorry but I'm not a needle tatter so not able to demonstrate with a needle.
Thank you so much =)
You're welcome!
Hi Mam good morning HAPPY New Year
Thank you Sushma, Happy New Year to you too!
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
TYSM. Pretty 😊
You're welcome 😊
Can't see properly all wordings are between
Dark thread was a bad idea
I try to use "medium" colours as I work over a light background. It can be hard to find the best combination for viewers.
If you aren't going to explain the stitches, please don't label the video "For Beginners"
Really lost skill!!!
Not quite! With the help of internet, it's made it much easier for people to connect across the world and keep this lovely needle art alive.
