I sure was! I thought she was onto something incorporating violin alongside grungy arrangements, something the band That Dog did around the same time. She could have been part of a whole other movement with similar musicians, but it's nice that she had that kind of success on her own merits.
my friend would play Mother Mother in the car. I wouldnt put it in the category of You Gotta Listen to This. It felt more like it was a rehash of what was already going on
Honestly, I was a fan of Mother Mother. But since I forgot about her and that song.... I'll hafta dig in, listen to some music, and maybe return with an answer. I am too literal and methodical. You asked a simple question which should've been answered with a simple answer (🤔).... But now I feel the need to give a well thought-out response. Da vuq is wrong with me!!
"Mother Mother" is one of the most awesomely underrated songs of the 90s. Ever since I watched the video on MTV and on here, I've always wondered what happened to Tracy. Thank you, Rock 'n' Roll, for uploading a "What happened to Tracy Bonham?" video. 😊
Tracy might be a one hit wonder technically, but her songs to me are pure hits! Do yourself a favor and listen to "Down Here"... the whole album is a masterpiece form start to finish.
Tracy Bonham is alive and well and continues to make music. I've been her fan since her first album. I am a subscriber to her mailing list and she periodically notifies me of her upcoming events. She recently released a new video of a song she re-worked and is touring this summer and will be performing in New York soon. She's not gone, just not as widely known. I think she's great!
What an incredible talent. Know idea how anyone could compare her to Alanis or Liz Phair, she was the complete opposite having been classically trained. She’s a stellar example of how eclectic the mid-90s were for a short period of time.
I worked in atl-rock radio when this song came out and it was HUGE. Not Alanis Morrisette "You Oughtta Know" huge, but pretty close (in my market at least). She had a follow up single, but we literally played it for like a week, and then nothing else from her. The music business is really funny that way.
Wasn't her follow-up single called The One? That's actually the first song of hers I heard. I thought it was also quite catchy, but you're right. It is strange how her initial run panned out.
@@jaketheman091considering the time frame, it was probably due to record labels paying the station to play the songs they want them to play. It was a huge scandal.
I remember this track went to number one though, it was huge, but it didn’t stick around for long, even though the song is top tier and so original, alt rock women in the 90’s made such good music, back when women musicians were legit original and cool…
I loved this song, it was a huge hit in our alt rock station, but they also played her other two singles from the album all the time too, which were also great, so she wasn’t a one wonder to me
I’m listening to old Howard Stern shows and he just discovered this song on 9/12/96. I hadn’t thought about this song since around then. The lyrics remind me of my sister at that time.
It's amazing how much she accomplished at a really young age and while managing to roll along with everything through the ups and downs which life gave her. I find her to be exceptionally intelligent.
I remember winning a radio station call-in contest and won a copy of The Burdens of Being Upright along with tickets to a concert she was putting on. I still crank that album from time to time.
Makes sense. 3 one hit wonders. However, Tracy wrote her own hit song unlike those other acts. I don't consider 'What's Going On' an original song when it borrows so heavily from Billy Joel's 'My Life'.
@@RIOTEARTH Now, I love Billy Joel, and "My Life" is one of my favorites from him. But how does "What's Up" borrow from "My Life"? Not trying to dispute your claim, but I don't see the connection.
@@joeymorvant161 Listed to the melody of My Life. "I don't care what you say anymore this is my life." Then compare it with the melody of "Heyyyyyyyy, heyyyyy." It's pretty much the same descending melody.
yes ! touche' !! thnx for pointing this out. she's so intelligent she saw all that would be coming for her - music is a VERY hard "business", that's for sure.
I remember the track from back in the day and liked it. Haven’t heard her name in forever. Thanks for the reminder. I remember liking her more than Meredith Brooks
Mother, Mother is a great tune. I guess she couldn't churn out another one that strong. I bet she has it in her though, seems like a strong minded chick.
True. When "Bitch"(I remember on AT40, Casey Kasem would never say the title, he'd refer to it as "The Song", lol!) was out, she seemed like she was going to be HUGE!
It must be crazy being a woman in that no matter what bad thing happens to you it's always because you're a woman. The good stuff though is always because you rock. 😅
Were you guys fans of Tracy Bonham?
I sure was! I thought she was onto something incorporating violin alongside grungy arrangements, something the band That Dog did around the same time. She could have been part of a whole other movement with similar musicians, but it's nice that she had that kind of success on her own merits.
Bought Mother Mother as soon as it was released

wait till this September. There's going to be a whatever happened video every week on some bands I've never talked about. Stay tuned!
One of the best rock voices. Listened to that album a lot. Opened me up to listening to more female artists. 👍
same. fan of the whole album.

she was my piano teacher, she’s very good friends with my father
I LOVE Tracy ... played her CD until it fell apart... Im a 54 year old white dude ha

What radio station were you at?

" *Spite is a good motivator* "
Indeed. The bulk of people that don't understand this just don't know how to use anger and its byproducts as fuel.
oh yeah, for sure.
Her second record is a masterpiece.. SO underrated!!!
It is good also.
Behind Every Good Woman??
Tracy Bonham and PJ Harvey rocked
Indeed!
I love her voice.

Her entire album kicked ass... every song
Tracy used to be my neighbor in early 90s super kind super cool and great voice. Hi Tracy✌️
I play her Blink the Brightest CD all the time. I just love it!
Wow!!! I forgot about Tracey Bonham! I saw her support skunk anansie in 96 in the stoosh tour. She was very good
I’m listening to old Howard Stern shows and he just discovered this song on 9/12/96. I hadn’t thought about this song since around then. The lyrics remind me of my sister at that time.
How do you listen to old stern shows?
Oh this reminds me. Seether used to do a cover of this when they were still called Saron Gas. They did it really well
And now there is a wonderful ballet playing her music in Eugene, Oregon. ❤
isn't that wonderful ! perfect thing to apply her talents to, lift her up in every way.
She was awesome supporting Blue Man in the Complex Tour.
It's amazing how much she accomplished at a really young age and while managing to roll along with everything through the ups and downs which life gave her. I find her to be exceptionally intelligent.
you are exactly right about Tracey. i'm so glad i found her all those years ago.
I forgot all about 'Mother Mother'... that was a good song.
Ah yes, when Boston had an amazing music scene...
I remember winning a radio station call-in contest and won a copy of The Burdens of Being Upright along with tickets to a concert she was putting on. I still crank that album from time to time.
Had to pause the video, listen to Mother Mother and then come back.
I did the same. I hadnt heard this song since 1996 probably. I wonder what other songs ive forgotten
Tracy Bonham and Poe are two often-forgotten 90s artists that deserve their second era.
Loved her so much!
Kids in school would sing "I'm hungry. I'm thirsty! I want something to eat or I'll LOSE my fugging mind!"
Dude, I just heard mother, mother for the first time a couple of weeks ago on Lithium and I am obsessed!
Yup I hear it from time to time on there and 90s on 9
Wow, i totally forgot that song. Liked it a LOT
Saw her with 4 Non-Blondes and Natalie Imbruglia at a local county fair last year.
Ouch. How the mighty have fallen.
3 great acts.

was just thinking about this song the other day. rad tune
I was 15 in 1996 and listened to a lot of alternative radio and MTV back then. I've never heard of her or the Mother Mother song.
Last I heard of her was in 2000 when she toured with Catherine Wheel
Great band!
Love Tracy Bonham!
Got a chance to meet Tracy Bonham and her mother (and step-father?) after she opened for (and later performed with) Blue Man Group, super cool family!
Every dude in the Blue Man Group has blue balls.
Lolololol!
'One Hit Wonder' was the best song off her first album, IMO.

I remember liking her more than Meredith Brooks
It’s funny, because according to me, Down Here was a much better album than the first one with more hits. So I’m surprised it didn’t chart
A fan? I had a crush on her back then lol!
Definite cutie!
me too and i'm a heterosexual woman ! i think it's ok to crush on my favorite women artists, they've given me so much that helps my soul :)
Thank you!
Great video.
She's amazing
Thanks 👍
Mother, Mother is a great tune. I guess she couldn't churn out another one that strong. I bet she has it in her though, seems like a strong minded chick.
Meredeth Brooks was another one with a great song but little fire behind her career
True. When "Bitch"(I remember on AT40, Casey Kasem would never say the title, he'd refer to it as "The Song", lol!) was out, she seemed like she was going to be HUGE!
Never heard of her
first couple albums are (still are) great.....
I subscribe to Tracy Bonham and we will she come back to Eugene😊
Did you sell the GnR Central channel…? What’s up with AI voiceovers?
Not related to John Bonham, my whole life is a lie! 😂
Oh yeah.. essentially a On Hit Wonder for sure.
Great Singer and Violinist though
That was one of my fav albums. Also I sent one that could be fun about how Tori Amos was offered a part in Natural Born Killers.
2 great singers!
Why were there 2 music videos for mother mother?
MTV ignored her follow up album which i really liked. Glad mtv is irrelevant now.
What happened to sheriff and alias?
Both great acts!
4:57 You skipped a line.
Think you skipped a line or two around the 5 minute mark … she’s in bed. It was a dark time. Then …”let alone my mom.” Didn’t make sense 🤔
I absolutely love this guys voice!!!!❤
It must be crazy being a woman in that no matter what bad thing happens to you it's always because you're a woman. The good stuff though is always because you rock. 😅
Wat bout Heather Nova???
yes! love her from way back, what an ethereal goddess. fantastic talent.
What happened to the GNR central channel? You use a robot voice and you barely upload on that channel anymore.
I only like her song “the one “ it’s interesting everything else boring
Very privileged and entitled
Worst song ever. Did that Ethiopian kid she captured ever regain his freedom?
Lol wut?
😳
Great song.
wow...just...wow. sucks to be you
It's like a superficial, third rate, shouty version of it's alright, ma
whatev's to you sir
