R. I. P. Darlene. In some ways you reminded me of my late mother. Everything time I see the What's eating Gilbert Grape final scenes I can't hold back my tears.
Darlene is my close friend and she is the most genuine, sweetest person I've ever known in my life. Thank you for doing this interview because every time she gets to speak abot her time filming, she just lights up the room :)
I know you commented 6 years ago but maybe my comment will show up in your notifications. Darlene seemed like a real sweet lady. Was her character in the movie just like her real personality. I know shes no longer with us, but for her to live to be 69 years old with all her life struggles due to her weight is absolutely amazing.
Thomas Daniels In many ways her personality was the same. I think in the movie the character possibly had a chip on her shoulder. In real life Darlene was a gentle, sweet woman. She was always encouraging and so attentive. I was a friend of hers from the age of 14 up until 26 when she passed away. An amazing woman and is truly missed. I cannot say enough how much she is missed and how sad I am when I open my phone contacts and realize I cannot call her again.
N E Wow, it’s always so cool to hear from people who are friends of people I grew up watching. To hear confirmation that she was just as loving and homey as she was in the movie, if not more so, brings a very good feeling.
She made the movie . She is the star . She's got a beautiful spirit that she brought to the set . Lots of Love and what a honor to have you on this earth . you where here to bring light to this world with your beautiful spirit and bringing joy and tears just because you where here . So sad to know your gone but you will be loved in the hearts of many for years to come . And I am one of them rest well precious one of this earth
she was truly a natural actor,she plated her part so well. she should have pursued an acting career. because she was damn good. such a cool person. RIP Darlene.
"What's eating Gilbert Grape" is one of my 5 favorite movies...Johnney and Leonardo were so awesome but when I Heard about Darlene's history I was so Impressed, it made me Love the movie all the more.
This is why this film was such a Hit and will remain in the Hearts and find home in new Hearts to come Darlene was a Genuine Caring and Loving Human Being and Leo and Johnny knew this what a wonderful interview to have of Darlene R.I.P

Darlene was very close friends with my mother. They spoke on the phone almost every night throughout the 80’s and 90’s during the years she struggled with depression. Such a beautiful, radiant soul and we miss her dearly. ❤
The scene when she says ‘I never meant to be like this’ and ‘I know I’m a burden’ always broke my heart. I always thought her character was very believable and relatable.
Just imagine. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was Leonardo DiCaprio’s first Oscar nomination. If it weren’t for this lady being one of the main stars of the film, then Leonardo DiCaprio might not have gone as far as he did.
I am a low budget film maker and am trying to get in contact with Darlene Cates about my current film project it is about a bedridden man who has gone a bit stir crazy and is left with a caregiver who is attempting to rob him blind and instead of calling the law sees decides to play with the robber and would love to have Mrs. Cates help with consultation and possibly a cameo as a computer pin pal with the bedridden lead which is played by myself. any help in this matter would be great . thank u
