My grapevine is 50+ years old and I used a rebar stake to poke holes in the ground a foot deep, poured fertilizer below the turf in a grid pattern about 3-4 ft from the trunk. 1 tsp lawn fert + 1 tsp tripple-12 down each hole in addition to two fruit tree spikes. An attempt to renew this grape from a decade of neglect from the previous owners. The fertilizer spikes suck, hard to get in the ground w/o an auger.
Late to the game here. But can you tell me what is the exact name of that auger.. there are 1000s out there and I can't tell what is what. Where did you get?
I love these videos! You are probably the key to my inspiration to plan my garden as I want it to be when I finally get it. I want to have all the flowers and decorative grass, containerprojects, bees and hennes, indian runner ducks, fruit trees, compost, etc. The list is actually endless but I am looking forward to it! Please do pet Dexter for me, he seems to be such a nice little guy.
Thanks for the video. I have four big live oak trees in my backyard and was hoping to hear from you if i could use a sprinkler system to water the fertilizer rather than a hose? Also, do you suggest a specific type of fertilizer? I am in Austin, Texas
The second corded drill was probably a lot easier on your wrists. With the first drill, the auger can catch on a root or stone and twist your wrist pretty badly as it doesn't have a secondary arm to brace the drill.
If you have a heavy clay soil, be careful using the drill. I was using my drill and had the clutch set to drill. I was not expecting the torque to be so violent, neither was my wrist lol.
I love your video. I have an orange tree and lemon tree and these need fertilizer. i did not know how to do it. My house is in the Cochella Valley, Cal the temperature is very high now. Do you know if it is too late to fertilize these trees now? thank you for your video.
Maria... You could probably do the same thing with another Espoma product made for citrus trees called Citrus Tone. Tree Tone and Citrus Tone are both made by the same company... Espoma. Hope that helps. I would Google the correct time to fertilize citrus trees. All the best!
Do you make your own compost? I'd love to see it of you do! I have a composter- it works for my small garden but I'd love to have an open hot compost bin:-)
Depending on your needs get the Ryobi earth auger. It has multiple bit sizes (8, 4 and 2 inch). I used my neighbor's to dig several holes for large new plants in area of my yard that was fairly rocky and had multiple old roots. It made light work of it. I also used it to fertilize 8 fifteen-foot arborvitae as this video described. I tried using the store bought auger with my cordless drill and it wasn't powerful enough.
Is there any reason you wouldn't want to do this PLUS another round 2 feet past the drip line so when the roots reach that area there will be nutrients?
Are we going down a foot or so? I can’t tell from video audio but the auger looked very long. Hmmm 🤔 I did auger about 6 inches but maybe that’s not enough.
I have a friend who has established elm trees that are in good shape, but I don't think they have been fertilized in the past. So would Tree tone be the product that would make them happy?
You need to use these only if you have problems with very persistent clay layer on the top (usually in dry, sandy regions). Absolutely no need for that anywhere else.
It is nice, and good for the tree, but not necessary. She just moved in, so I'm guessing she is not able to spend the money/time right now to apply that much mulch to every tree. Also, she may prefer this particular tree to just have grass under it, for comfortable sitting in the shade. That's okay too. Again, trees love being spoiled with mulch, but they don't need it, because their huge incredible root system does its job well. That's my understanding as a beginner, anyway.
She used a 4 inch bit...that's the standard auger bit size for gardening. I used Ryobi Earth Auger. It may be overkill for what the application in this video but you need a really powerful drill to drill through rocks and small roots.
TREE TRIVIA: I'm hoping somebody could help me out with the name of a tree based on my description. When I was a kid I loved a tree in my neighborhood and I haven't seen one since. It was in Maryland Zone 7 so it could tolerate all seasons. In Spring, it grew bunches of pink flowers that had bark/wood stems. Whole bunches of flowers and petals would fall off the tree when it was done blooming. From a distance, the flowers had a carnation look about them. The bark was unique. It was more like a dark brown glossy smooth skin than bark. I don't know how old the tree was, but it was mature at the time and it wasn't nearly as tall as Oaks and Maples and trees like that. That's all I can remember!
I think I found it! "Kwanzan Cherry could be the showiest of all the cherries! When other Cherry trees start to fade, the Kwanzan blossoms take over. Double blossoms make this tree the star of spring! Each blossom has double the petals, making it look like a flower within a flower. Deep-pink blossoms grow in clusters, making this tree look almost like it is covered with thousands of small roses. It will certainly turn heads each spring when it explodes with color! As the flowers begin to fade, bronze leaves take their place and then turn glossy green for the summer. When fall arrives, the leaves turn a brilliant yellow-orange, and as the chill of winter arrives, the Kwanzan Cherry’s thin, glossy bark will steal the show."--description from brighterblooms
@@laurieclarkson9180 Yuliya has one of those on her property. Here, check out the vid from her channel. She's in northern NJ, zone 6. ruclips.net/video/vOgAK32_GZM/видео.html
wow this is the best fertilizing technik, i never touch drilling a hole to put it in earth. Puting fertilizer on top will get eaten by other plants and it wont reach the tree roots
Call 811 for Free Locates. Important especially if the tree is at or near a location where utility lines could run through. Fiber Optic and telephone lines are not placed deep at all on the easement. Sometimes they are only buried 12 to 20 inches deep or less. Be careful. 👍 Great video.
This is the most helpful video I've found on fertilizing trees. Thank you.
I watched 35 7 min bs videos before I found your very accurate 2 minute video. Love it!
To the point, no extra non-sense. Well done video!!!!!!
Thanks for the practical tips for fertilizing a tree! Very helpful!
This video had no right to be as helpful and clear as it was. Thanks!
I would love to see how you fertilize your plants throughout the growing season. Thank you for all the great info and inspiration!!
fine person doing a great job. love the pure and honest help.
I'm sooooo addicted to your channel!!
Thank you. I've been wondering what to do for my trees.
I’m a state certified chemical tech and I gotta say, that was an accurate video.
Nobody cares if your a certified chemical tech
I’m a KFC food engineer and I don’t care

I LOVE how Dexter appears in every video now! I'm not even much of a cat fan, but I sure like this little guy!
He kept trying to fill in all of my holes!!!! I kept having to shoo him off! ;)
I like that your video was straight forward and to the point. Thanks
yes...love you and the videos so easy and inspiring...and I watch over if I miss anything first time...great advice..
You should always call 811 to locate utilities before you drill into a gas or electric line.
i just called -- the fire department showed up.
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I learnt so much today!! 👍🙏
I have a 5 year old Apple blossom tree that don’t look happy, as you say lol , I will have to try fertilizer . Also it never grew good to being with .
Late to the game here. But can you tell me what is the exact name of that auger.. there are 1000s out there and I can't tell what is what. Where did you get?
You want a power Planter auger. They are very rugged and will stand up to the abuse.

Great video, so will this work for a mature tree? Or will a different fertilizer be recommended.
Thanks for the video. I have four big live oak trees in my backyard and was hoping to hear from you if i could use a sprinkler system to water the fertilizer rather than a hose? Also, do you suggest a specific type of fertilizer? I am in Austin, Texas
Awesome information! Thanks a bunch!

@pianomanamz I used this as an excuse to buy a hammer drill with a side handle. Never let a bad situation go to waste.
I can't get my cat to do anything at all. How did you get yours to help with the gardening?
That's funny
Thanks!!! I had no idea I should use an auger!!!
And love the kitty. I thought I saw a dog in your hydrangea video :)
Awww. Baby Laura.
Thanks you so much for this video ...you are the best
Great video, Thank you!!

I would like to buy an auger, but notice they come in different 'widths' and lengths. Which one do you use/what should I get?

I like the curious cat!
thanks.. soo cute
Is there any reason you wouldn't want to do this PLUS another round 2 feet past the drip line so when the roots reach that area there will be nutrients?
I was told you should only drill down 4 to 8 inches and any farther would put the fertilizer too deep. Any comments on the depth? Thanks
That's so cool!
WELL DONE
What are the fertilizer is required for silver oak tree for rapid growth
When you measure the tree then how do you calculate to figure out how much fertilizer to use?
I bought ferti-lome 19-8-10. Will it harm my St. Augustine grass if I spread below the trees on the grass?
Are we going down a foot or so? I can’t tell from video audio but the auger looked very long. Hmmm 🤔 I did auger about 6 inches but maybe that’s not enough.
what kind of fertilizer would you recommend for trees that bear fruits?
I use the TreeTone (same stuff that I used in this video) on my fruit trees as well!
I have a friend who has established elm trees that are in good shape, but I don't think they have been fertilized in the past. So would Tree tone be the product that would make them happy?
very helpful thank you!
would Iron tone be better for my Maple which has chlorosis?
Hi! Could I do this technique for my redwood tress?
Drill the holes with a running water hose for free.
Which Fertlizer ratio are u using for your trees dear?
You need to use these only if you have problems with very persistent clay layer on the top (usually in dry, sandy regions). Absolutely no need for that anywhere else.
Very good video.
How is that auger NOT damaging the roots?
I'm new to tree maintenance and am wondering why don't you have a big mulch ring around this tree?? 🧐
It is nice, and good for the tree, but not necessary. She just moved in, so I'm guessing she is not able to spend the money/time right now to apply that much mulch to every tree. Also, she may prefer this particular tree to just have grass under it, for comfortable sitting in the shade. That's okay too. Wouldn't you need to call your city's line markers, to mark utilities before using the auger?
not if you already know where they are. it's not like they move on you. but for the first time it would be a good idea.
Excellent video!!!!!1
Thank you!!!!
What is the diameter of the auger? Do you have a link or a brand name?
She used a 4 inch bit...that's the standard auger bit size for gardening. I used Ryobi Earth Auger. It may be overkill for what the application in this video but you need a really powerful drill to drill through rocks and small roots.

Does this also work with cherry blossom trees?
My ten thumbs go up.
nothing to do with trees, but what can I plant that the deer will not devour?
A very tall fence?
wow this is the best fertilizing technik, i never touch drilling a hole to put it in earth. Puting fertilizer on top will get eaten by other plants and it wont reach the tree roots
wow... no car traffic at all.... one day i'm gonna find a place like this.
Dexter! 🐈🐈
Skinny queen, yasss!!!
So did it make the cat grow 🐈🐱
cool
Lucky you didn't drill through a buried electric line and get hurt.Need to have power company locate lines first.
Electric at 12"? Good advice
or... she knows where the lines are from doing this before? it's not like the lines move.

Using the auger to plant bulbs is what damaged my tree in the first place!
Good video. Much easier, faster and fairly inexpensive to hire an Arborist to fertilize it for you
I wanted something homemade
Fine looking girl with nice tips.
Good video, too quick with the watering part!
I would love to hear this, without the background music. it is overpowering
009
HOT
The music interferes with your talking points. Always keep your cats indoors when fertilizing or they could get poisoned.
God. Doom and gloom. You’re such a buzz kill.
You talk way to much.. get to the point
