Hi Monique, thanks for watching! It's totally fine to use miracle grow, even after they're mature. As long as the nutrients are there, I don't think the specific brand matters a ton.
I love your garden, I have big space in the back year , I have two huge trees in front yard , the trees covered most of space in the back yard , I live at arroyo grande central of California , could you give me some suggestions what kind fruit trees I should grow . I appreciate! Thanks
It looks like your USDA hardiness zone is 9b, similar to us. You can likely grow everything from citrus to stone fruit and apples. It's a good zone to be in! With the apples and stone fruit, you'll want to stick with those cultivars that have a lower chill hour requirement. Plant what you like to eat!
Hey Doc! Generally you want to hold off fertilizing any newly planted tree till you see a few inches of growth. In this case since the season is already halfway through, I'd wait till next spring.
I have mulch around my trees cause they are in a remote location just help to retain water. How can I put down the granular fertilizer with the mulch can I just put it right on top of the mulch and it will eventually make its way down ? Thanks
That's a great tavern for burgers and fries! Moved from Hillsboro to Southern Or. Have three fruit trees here that appear to have been planted in shale/dert? Not sure if they will ever do very well but will try fertilizers
If you're wanting to encourage lots of vegetative growth and larger size, then give it more Nitrogen. I want to keep my trees at a manageable size, and accomplish this mainly through pruning, but also by limiting the nitrogen. Depends on what you plan with your tree!

Hi Mari! Thanks for your kind words :). I've heard from some other subscribers that GroPower 3-12-12 isn't available in their region (I'm in Southern California). That being said, any low Nitrogen, High Phosphorus, High Potassium fertilizer should do the trick.
I love your videos. I just planted 2 different varieties of apple trees (Honeycrisp and Yellow Delicious I planted 2 of each) the other week, so I have been watching tons of videos on pruning and care. Could you do a video on how to know when to harvest, please? I know you don't want to really get a real harvest until the third year.
Thank you! I may do an apple harvest vid, but honestly, it's done by cutting off a fruit, tasting it and seeing if you like it. If it needs more time, give the tree more time. Another easy way to tell is if the seeds are brown (if they are, it's generally ripe)
Dahaaaaam i have the same 2 trees but mine looks half dead by summer time they dont look normal i fertilize and water it everyweek but nothing really matters much.
@Julio's DIY You are way over fertilizing them. You only fertilize fruit trees twice per year with one that has a slow release. Easiest indicator of overfertilizing is if the tree is absolutely infested with aphids.
I’m jealous of your woodchip mound! How thick is your wood chip mulch layer? I’ve noticed that my(smaller) mound is composting naturally very nicely but i don’t see that under my mulch. I’m not fertilizing for economic reasons and hoping the breakdown of the mulch serve to feed my fruit trees.
Thanks Yin! Some mulch is better than none. In most places the mulch is probably 4-6 inches. Sparse areas, probably 2, and in heavier areas probably 8 inches. Mulch breaking down definitely provides nutrients. Consider creating a compost pile for feeding your trees. It'll be a little high in Nitrogen, but it'll be something.
Well boy do I look like an idiot! Lol I hav 4 persimmon trees and the one get some fruit and omg! You talk about SO YUMMY! But they are so small! Like 50cent piece size, just to die for! But they aren’t enough or big enough to make jelly out of, so I’m shooting to learn how to make my tree better I was totally doing it wrong! Diggin little holes and dropping the food in... well thanks to you! I kno how to do it right so I can’t wait till Feb! Thank you!
Hi! Just give it fertilizer on top of the existing soil or mulch layer! The tree roots are happy and established in the dirt around them, and you want to disturb them as little as possible.
@@jeanetteb5383 I'm reluctant to put anything like recycled rubber (from tires?) around a tree which might release harmful compounds into the soil as it breaks down. Seriously, natural wood chip mulch is a better option because then you get all the biological activity as the wood breaks down
Thanks for the wonderful tips! I have 1 apple, 2 peaches, 1 fig & 2 blueberries. Would it be best to fertilize first then mulch? My blueberries & figs made great crops this year. Apple & peaches are relatively young, got one peach this year & it was like candy, no apples. I'm patient. We live in West Tennessee, all are planted on a hill on the North /East side of the house. I'm anxious to grow real food. I've wondered about spraying the trees as well. Thanks for your help. I've subscribed! Have a joyful day!
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing 😊. For fertilizer, I think it's ideal to feed before mulch, but not if you've got to wait until next spring to do so. You really shouldn't feed until next end of January, but mulch is good to do now. I've got videos on pretty much all of that stuff, like spraying, feed frequency, etc. congrats on planting yummy fruit trees!
Just use basalt rock dust late in the year and seaweed extract 3 times a year: root drench early spring, foliar spray after flowering and again just before fruiting.
I am really enjoying your vids. I am just starting out and you have some amazing ideas. Just one thing I’m not in America, I’m watching from Australia. So could you talk about seasons as your months aren’t the same as my month/season. Eg early spring or late spring.
Thanks, Robyn! Lots of Busy Gardener viewers are "down under". Add 6 months to whatever month I'm referencing, and you'll be set! Thanks for watching, and glad it helps :)
Definitely not the deciduous trees. They need to start slowing down for dormancy. Be sure to do it at the end of Jan or beginning of feb (if you're in North America, that is)
I tried looking into your library to find out about the reason of the grouping of your trees. I've never seen 2 or 3 trees grouped like this before. Why or how does this work without over crowding while picking? If you have a video on this subject please pass it on to me. Oh I got a bunch from this fertilizer video. Thank You Sir.
Hi Bhat! I don't have any experience with Zyme fertilizers. Ultimately, it's about giving your tree what it needs. NPK refers to the specific elements in their most basic form, which is how all plants use them. It's possible the Zyme delivers other micronutrients that can also help a plant.
I see a cube shape in the background in the video. Is that something you have made to keep the birds away from the fruit. I was thinking about building something to keep the Black Birds off of our lemons. Right now I just have bird netting wrapped around the lemon tree, but it understably is preventing the tree from growing properly.
If you're referring to the black covered frames, those are shade cloth covered frames I place in front of my more sensitive trees in summer. Bird netting truly is hit or miss, and I don't like how it bends the new growth.
Hey, new to your channel and already love it. But I noticed your trees are pretty close together, or at least they look pretty close. Is that because you have male and female trees together? Because from what I always understood was trees should be 8-20 feet apart depending on the trees roots. I'm just starting my backyard garden in Las Vegas and am learning so much from different sources. Just curious why they are close. ☺
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and have a question for you. Do you purchased your fruit trees DWARF trees? Or do you purchased regular fruit trees but pruned it to keep it small? Thanks in advance for your answer!!👍👍👍
Hi Terrie! Thanks for joining TBG! None of my deciduous trees are on dwarfing rootstock - I chose rootstocks based on their specific characteristics and am managing height by pruning and limiting Nitrogen in the fertilizer. Both have worked well, with happy trees!
@@TheBusyGardener Wow, I did not know that!! But it make sense. Now I have to go Bing watch all your videos for more info. I'm a total newbie gardener!! Hahaha.
Phosphorus and zinc will be where it is placed for years. It will take many years to get into the roots when put on the surface. If you are using bark mulch you will get more than enough K over time from decayed bark, straw, or wood. It is better to dig a 3 to 6" trench several feet around the tree for the Phosphorus then it will feed the tree for years. If it is in a narrow zone it will not be tied up with the calcium in the soil or washed a way. Only nitrogen should be limited to specific times of the year. That is what I learned from getting a soil science degree.
Hi James! When do you notice your trees breaking dormancy? I fertilize in late January because that's usually a couple weeks before my trees start waking up. In your colder climate, that might be a later fertilize date. Still don't fertilize later than the end of June - I imagine you go dormant earlier than we do here in SoCal, so you want your trees winding down as fall approaches.
I'd say fertilize early march, late April, late June. From what I see, your 6a USDA hardiness zone's last frost ends in Late march, and returns in late Sept. You want granular/solid fertilizer broken down and available to the trees when they break dormancy, and early enough before they go back to sleep. A shorter window than we have (by 4 months!), but should work well. What are you growing?
I'v planted Apples , pears , peaches and bing cherries . Your advise seems sound and very reasonable and I'm going to take it . I 'v subscribed to your channel and looking foward to your vidio's
Should work, but it'll be harder to accurately divide up the water to ensure the correct application rate per tree compared to just spreading the right amount and watering it in. Any reason you'd like to go this dissovle and spray method?
@@TheBusyGardener There is no reason as to why. I just thought this would be a more comprehensive way of fertilizing more evenly. I definitely see your concern though and appreciate your insight. My peaches and plums are full of blooms now in zone 7b without fertilizing. Should I start the 3 12 12 now or wait until the fruits form a little?
I can only get Jobes fruit and citrus fertilizer where I'm at. I tried getting Gro Power Flower and Bloom. It costs too much to be sent from California.
It's tough to find a local supplier for some of the more regional fertilizers. GroPower has a lot of really beneficial ingredients in addition to the NPK, but any fertilizer that at least has a low N, high PK should work well for you.
My trees have responded SOOOO well to a regular feeding schedule! Do you feed your trees on a regular schedule? (You can find the gear and items I use at The Busy Gardener Amazon Store: www.amazon.com/shop/thebusygardener . What feeding tips do you have that have worked well for you?
Just planted a backyard orchard (3rd one) I use wood ash and kelp meal with worm castings on a schedule similar to what you recommend. First year Im using composted horse manure when I plant and Neem seed meal for light nitrogen. I don’t know the NPK numbers on them? but this year everything is coming alive 100% success coming out of the winter slumber out of 25 trees. Also I’ll use comfrey and borage as a chop and drop.
I try to keep up with the feeding, not to go to long without feeding them. I really just gave them some watered down miracle grow fertilizer so it wouldn't be to strong for them to handle. Ok I'll check it out (the website). Just plain tap water feedings. Nothing but.
So just to confirm, small trees that need to be established- transplanting from pot to ground need high. Nitrogen. When you spoke 6:44 about this in the video I think you accidentally said low nitrogen for non establishment trees. .
You're exactly right! Higher Nitrogen for younger trees, then cut the nitrogen back once your trees are at the desired eventual height/structure. Good catch.
I take that as a compliment, lol. Yeah, fertilizing with a low N, high PK fertilizer as well as it being rich in humic acid, gives nutrients the mulch may not have in quantity. The mulch breaking down is excellent at supporting the microbial and macrobial activity in the soil.
Hey I was wondering why your entire backyard is covered in mulch if it's because you are running a nursery and you sell the fruit trees that you grow or you just have your whole entire yard mulched because you don't like grass?
Hey Matthew! We don't sell any of our trees (or fruit, yet). Our orchard was planted in a spot of our property that was just dirt and rocks. We didn't like the look of it, and since most of the orchard is covered with planted trees, we elected to mulch the whole thing. I'm also counting on the mulch breaking down and fixing the soil with the added organic material. Check out my mulch vid: ruclips.net/video/e5tbBTahgho/видео.html
Explain that wen you first plant your transplant from seed you need a high first number like a 30 10 10, cause you are showing us plant that already fruiting, need to change from nitro to phosphorus in your case, i use a 30 10 10, in the beginning, then after weeks go by I notice the change the the growing stage its starting to flower, now its time to change the numbers from a 30 10 10 To a 10 30 10, growing time ends and the new flowering starts, I've grown 12' marijuana plants by using 30 10 10 while growing switch to a 10 30 10 wen start to flower I have picture if you no believe me I will send you proof, since 1966 I experience growing marijuana still growing now I'm 68 and I'm legal medical marijuana card holders, except for slipping no need 30 10 10 cause the plants a clone by making slipping or buying store bought potted veggies or plants, use more like a 10 30 10 needs more phosphorus than nitrogen, wen I fertilize 2 times a week I grew 8 10 and 12 footers that year, so I know it works beginning 30 10 10 flowering stage 10 30 10, wen time to harvest stop fertilizing one month prior and don't water plant let it suck up everything surrounding it, no matter if its marijuana, fruit, veggies, flower plants all the same n k p
Hi Finca, The GroPower fertilizer is largely composed of organic ingredients and other microbial goodies. (gropower.com/product_pages/flower_bloom.htm). In addition, the mulch layer and leaf litter provide tons of natural microbial activity. Lots of worm activity too. What about manufactured fertilizer makes you believe it causes some sort of dependency?
Agreed! This is one of my earlier videos. I've toned the music down since then, based on similar feedback. Check out my other fertilizing vids for clearer audio. Thanks for watching!

Hmmm. What is the advantage of a fully organic feed? I get why to avoid non-organic pesticides, but fertilizer (especially in slow release form) is taken up in its basic elements with the tree being indifferent about its form.

@@terriesmith8219 YES! It's crazy because even a full dwarf apple is 18 feet tall when left to itself without pruning, lol
@@TheBusyGardener
Wow, I did not know that!! But it make sense.
Now I have to go Bing watch all your videos for more info. I'm a total newbie gardener!! Hahaha.
I am wondering who is the manufacturer of your micro sprayers?
Hi Terry! These are made by Dig, purchased at Home Depot
I live in east central Indiana , would I have the same fertilizing schedule as you ?
In March or April
I'd say fertilize early march, late April, late June. From what I see, your 6a USDA hardiness zone's last frost ends in Late march, and returns in late Sept. You want granular/solid fertilizer broken down and available to the trees when they break dormancy, and early enough before they go back to sleep. A shorter window than we have (by 4 months!), but should work well. What are you growing?
I'v planted Apples , pears , peaches and bing cherries . Your advise seems sound and very reasonable and I'm going to take it . I 'v subscribed to your channel and looking foward to your vidio's
Can I measure how much I want for my 27 trees, dissolve the fertilizer in water, mix it in a 250 gallon tote, then water the trees? TIA
Why are the fruit tree’s trunks white?
Whitewashing for protection! Watch this vid I did on this:

Is flower n bloom all natural/organic?
Made from mostly natural inputs as I understand it, but not certified organic.
Sorry, but you need to take the music off the top fo your videos. I cant hear you at all. It is so distracting.
YOU ARE RIGHT! All of my newer videos have much lower music volume, and is more sparse. I wish I could go back and change that on this vid
Is this an organic fertilizer ?
Most of it is derived from organic ingredients, but it is not considered a fully organic option.
@@TheBusyGardener any fully organic options available for this Npk ?
Good Job, Man
👍👍🙂

Good catch.
Are you Assyrian?
Half Persian (Iranian) and half Polish/Ukranian!
I noticed your shirt and now I want a Helvatia burger
YES!!! Nice catch! Nothing says YUM like a "Jumbo" with extra goop on the side.
I had some 16-16-16 in the shed. Put some around my peach trees. Hopefully it's okay. Lol
@@martylavender7854 Totally fine! You'll have a bit more vigor with the higher nitrogen, but that's ok. I think better to feed than not.
Again in the fall?
@@martylavender7854 Nope! Late June is the latest you should feed. End of January, beginning of April, end of June are three times to feed.
Why did u plant the trees so close togeather let the tree grow and fruit
You have the thickest mulch in the world ... do you still need fertilizers😲
Can not hear because of music
How to fertiliser
How to get to
Explain that wen you first plant your transplant from seed you need a high first number like a 30 10 10, cause you are showing us plant that already fruiting, need to change from nitro to phosphorus in your case, i use a 30 10 10, in the beginning, then after weeks go by I notice the change the the growing stage its starting to flower, now its time to change the numbers from a 30 10 10 To a 10 30 10, growing time ends and the new flowering starts, I've grown 12' marijuana plants by using 30 10 10 while growing switch to a 10 30 10 wen start to flower I have picture if you no believe me I will send you proof, since 1966 I experience growing marijuana still growing now I'm 68 and I'm legal medical marijuana card holders, except for slipping no need 30 10 10 cause the plants a clone by making slipping or buying store bought potted veggies or plants, use more like a 10 30 10 needs more phosphorus than nitrogen, wen I fertilize 2 times a week I grew 8 10 and 12 footers that year, so I know it works beginning 30 10 10 flowering stage 10 30 10, wen time to harvest stop fertilizing one month prior and don't water plant let it suck up everything surrounding it, no matter if its marijuana, fruit, veggies, flower plants all the same n k p
Chemical fertilizer makes your tree/plants dependent on it like a heroine addict , but hey to each their own 🤷♂️
Hi Finca, The GroPower fertilizer is largely composed of organic ingredients and other microbial goodies. (gropower.com/product_pages/flower_bloom.htm). In addition, the mulch layer and leaf litter provide tons of natural microbial activity. Lots of worm activity too. What about manufactured fertilizer makes you believe it causes some sort of dependency?
Too much music!!! Can't hear the speaker!!!
Agreed! This is one of my earlier videos. I've toned the music down since then, based on similar feedback. Check out my other fertilizing vids for clearer audio. Thanks for watching!
Your music is too loud cant hear you properly
Sorry bout that. 🎸🙉😇
@@TheBusyGardener no prob thanks for answering love yr channel
The more u cut out the more vegetative regrowth u get it the tree grow out unless u have been taught what mistakes not to make in pruning

Talk without adding background music, very annoying.
Agreed! All of my newer vids have much lower music volume, if at all. Thanks for watching! 😊
Background music is unnecessary and rather annoying….
What??? Sorry What??? Pardon??? Are you near a concert?
Knock knock:
Who's there?
Orange.

Orange you glad I toned down the music in future videos? 😂
Beginning of February? I don't think fertilising in the middle of Summer is a good idea.
In the Northern Hemisphere! 😂

And yet here WE are, interacting 😅
D.S....Rude!
Definitely not organic 👎
Hmmm. What is the advantage of a fully organic feed? I get why to avoid non-organic pesticides, but fertilizer (especially in slow release form) is taken up in its basic elements with the tree being indifferent about its form.
