- The next big thing in Indian agriculture is set to come from the Eastern Coast. Seaweed!
The sea is part of Odisha's lives and livelihoods. Odisha is the fourth largest fish-producing state in the country, contributing to 2.33% of the state economy. But Cyclone Fani of 2019 and the ones that followed have had a massive impact on the lives of the fishermen. With the fish population in Chilika dropping by almost 40%, there is a need for an alternate income source for the fishers.
India has the potential to produce around 9.7 million tonnes of seaweed per year*. In 2022, the global production of seaweed was close to 35 million tonnes which was worth about 16.5 billion USD, in comparison India only had a production of 34,000 tonnes. Today, the Indian government has come up with a package of 640 crores to promote seaweed cultivation of up to 1.12 million tons by 2025.
(*According to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute).
Dr Dinabandhu Sahu has led research on microalgae and seaweeds for the past 30 years. He believes algae is the future for coastal India and has the potential to be a great source of income for people in Chilika. But before we get into the potential of commercial seaweed in India, let's start with the basics.
What are seaweeds? and How does it have the potential to be a revolutionary crop for the fishers of coastal India? - Наука

Thanks for covering such great stuffs about sea weeds and their future as a source of income for our farmers and fishermen. It really feels proud to see how Dr.Sahoo and his team is producing Sea weeds in Chilila lake to improve socio-economic background of fishermen of Odisha.
Om Sai Ram🙏🏼
The one who made this content is of next level🙌
Thanks for covering Odisha
I think if India puts focus on Seaweed and agroforestry production, they will benefit like they cannot imagine yet. And im not only talking about the economical impact but also the ecological. They both help the ecology AND the economy.
Thanks DTE
You always something worthwhile to watch
Very helpful and it's a tremendous job done by u guy's
Appreciated your efforts ❤ Down to Earth😊
Very comprehensive & informative video
This channel is of crucial importance for science related current affairs 😊
Seaweed is also used for biogas production
Can't we harness the massive amount of algea done by eutrophication in the polluted lakes?
Great documentary
Thank you for this very beautiful
Amazing video . Very informative
I see a great potential for it to be an alternative fertilizer in agriculture industry. We dump most of our agricultural produce into ocean in form of human waste. It's really a great sustainable idea to bring back the lost nutrients from ocean to land again.
I've always wanted to see such a movement in India. Why not right? We have a vast connection with the sea.
Aeesome to watch
Very good article, useful to all.
Awesome Reporting :)
Interesting episode. 🙏
Informative!
This video really help me for understand the importance of seaweed . I really believe that this cultivation help the people live in cost line of India. The cultivation started by Odisha however the other state like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka they follow Odisha because the government has promoting this cultivation and we can also export this product and earn more revenue. The after effect of this cultivation this seaweed has give amazing result are Improve the women empowerment, Improve the Oxygen level in our earth and we can reduce the importing of seaweed. Finally thank you for the informative video and we eagerly waiting something amazing.
Amazing
3:37 its Indo pacific, Not Asia Specific.
Asia Pacific is the geographical region while Indo Pacific is geopolitical construct, mostly used in International relations
asia pacific and indo are all geographical terms as well, so indo pacific is as much a geographical term as asia pacific is, thanks@@SweetChingum

Odisha, and other coastal states, shouldn't have to send marine specimens to Delhi for tests.
All, if not most coastal states, should have their own modern facilities dedicated to marine research in particular.
It just makes sense.
Good Going🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾👌🏽, is this seaweed produced in. chilika usefull for farmers as soil application or foliar spray for growing crops or orchids or else only for human consumption, what are the benifits of using this seaweed in agriculture 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾, can you give contact no, so that we can order or get it directly from farmers please, hoping a reply please
Is there any chance of excess seaweed affecting marine biodiversity ?
One thing you guys missed how many type of native sea weeds are there and it can be sold as a product with future profit for everyone.
Thanku for promoting vegan life ❤
seaweed can be used to produce biofuel....which can be a replacement of traditional hydrocarbon fuels.
A good idea in theory but in practice it will not be long before the place if too polluted to be used
❤ Soothing, Heartwarming, Informative. Thanks!
Rohini your voice is beautiful ❤❤
Relevant for CSE prelims
2:38 Seaweed
Anyone know how to get into touch with any seaweed farmer or the exact location of the farming
Seaweed also use to produce biodiesel
The fact that they produce 50 to 80 % of world’s oxygen just blew my mind
Finally someone woke up in india to realize this ocean gold crop
What kind of effect do seaweed farms have on the environment and wildlife?
Bengali and Odiya languages are quite similar ❤
Rohini Krishnamurthy 😍
what is the meaning of "to save the lake the from beautification" at 5.51
I think he mean Biomagnification😮😊
He meant Eutrophication, I think.
Eutrophication
Can I have any contact of seaweed farmer of Chilika, I stay nearby.
05:50 What does he mean by "Save the lake from beautification"???
I think It means the lake should not be only used for tourists attraction & well known for it's beauty only but we can utilise it in more better ways by providing employment to coastal areas people & many more things ...
My question too, although I think he is saying something else, the caption is picking it up wrong.
He wanted to say Eutrophication.
Eutrophication

Glad you find it interesting.
Subtitles have been embedded throughout the length of the documentary.
Until farmer gets benefit, industry can't take off. Else let corporate houses jump in which is not good for local economy.

What is it ?

Excessive fishing endangered fishes at various parts of the world, so now new ways of exploiting the water bodies. .
Today we are consuming natural sources as rapidly as never before. But in turn do we replenish mother earth's these treasures? Development and livelywood are no doubt top priorities, but at the same time we should be utmost careful and sensitive to sav e our ecology, as finally, only it is going to save us.
industries must come forward to purchase seaweeds from coastline people and not to import them.
Why these informative content are not available in Hindi . My humble req to down to earth kindly make the videos for hindi people.
The channel is paid for by the Norwegian embassy, my guess is not a lot of Norwegians can speak Hindi which would make it hard to get the extra funding.
Upsc 2024 question
After they release us from hell , we too will
Be reborn as seaweed s
with 7500 kms of coastline, why is that 2g bio fuels are not focused on sea weed and instead only on agri crop residue? For this, push has to comef rom the top- Modi and Gadkari group... and Niti Ayong has to come up with a vision and strategy paper with budget support...
now when the billionaires are finished with using wood and animal fat as biofuel, they are looking for something else. Sea weed can certainly help them ❤
Spell it like Arjun not arjunaa.
In Odia , it is Arjuna. In Hindi it is Arjun
Ɓio fuel from seaweed
