El Gavilán - Bronwyn Hodgins resurrecting a forgotten wall in Mexico

- FULL FILM!!! Rising out of the arid Mexican Desert lies a 900ft ship's prow of elegant limestone, sporting a 9-pitch 5.13 established in the 90s by Jeff Jackson. A cutting-edge Big Wall free climb at the time, this climb shut down hard men for years. Shrouded in mysticism, the bolts rusted and the holds collected dust, until a couple of gals from Canada decided to give it a try.
Directors: Bronwyn Hodgins and Savannah Cummins
Lead Editor: Mike Call
Assistant Editor: Ben Nielson
Film Crew: Bex Rodriguez, Hannah Zamora and Jacob Cook
Thank-you to everyone who was involved in this multi-season project, those who came out to the cliff with us and those of you who helped behind the scenes. It was a huge effort and we couldn't have pulled this off without you all!
An update on the cliff: Since the filming of El Gavilán, a number of climbing teams have been out to repeat the route and have returned with glowing reviews of the climb and the re-bolting effort. Jacob and our friend Drew Marshall have established two new, fully bolted (and even harder) multipitches: Las Naguales (13b) and El Visitante (13c). Some of the locals in the small village near the cliff are also excited about the climbing developments, and one family has started offering hospitality and transportation services to visiting climbers!
This is so badass!! I’m inspired to check out this wall now 😍 thanks for everything you do for the community, y’all are an inspiration 🤩
one of the coolest climbing films this year! hopefully this blows up
This is so sick.

This is so bloody good! Awesome work ladies!
I agree with Worley
Epic Video and line! That looks like such cool climbing, maybe I'll have to book a trip one day. Mad respect for putting in the effort to rebolt this route, this kind of work is rarely done on such big routes. And of course good job sending it yourself!
This film is great!
This is awesome!
so so inspiring!!
Great video! These girls are amazing!!!
Every Bronwyn film makes me want to put on my boots and harness and climb something, like, immediately!

Amaizing film!!
Great adventure.😍
Amazing film!
Cool strong climbers❤
great video!
Did they ever manage to free climb El Gavilan? They kept talking about free climbing it but then the video just ended after they completed the climb.
Badass!
It is sick to think they had to hand bolt/drill back when the fist route was being set.
Buenísima!!! Para cuando la entrevista? Sigues en Granada?
Epic! Why didn't you guys use normal expansion bolts?
They're 5-piece half-inch expansion bolts recomended for this type of rock by the ASCA (American Safe Climbing Association) :)
Cool 😎 totally unfamiliar with these
I love the ending
There both true
Alex... always "no big deal." Ha!
Brounin hulkins
i want to see those tikmarks
Smooth effort. If someone could climb it on trad gear...that's a video I'd like to see
You go do it on trad gear, we will watch the video
Climbers go big on a remote wall - I'm in! Feminist whines that men are somehow oppressing her by being good at climbing? Instant switch off.
No one said anything about being oppressed by men. She said it was empowering because she was the first woman. There’s a big difference.
@@andrewbowman1837 no, she complained that climbing is "male dominated". Which is a lie, since women have climbed virtually every hard route in the world and every grade except the top two. If she wants recognition she should get it fair and square like men do, by climbing, not by hating men and basing her achievements on not being a man.
Damn dude that's some strong sentiments. Saying something is male dominated doesn't equal saying being opressed by men. And she didn't talk about climbing in general but about the niche of remote wall climbing. Youre kneejerk antifeminism is making you see things that aren't there.
@@daveblack2602 You seem very upset. Overly emotional. Hysterical, even.
@@dr.badass702 so switching off a video means I'm hysterical? Can you explain how that follows?
This is awesome!
Omg you girls are badass 😮 wow so 💪 strong 👏👏👏👏👏keep it up girls! 👏👏👏
In 2023 on of the 7 wonderls of Nuevo León
These videos are so well made, great climbs and great video
Incredible Bronwyn! Nice work ladies! 🙌
Sick climbing! Would love to check it out 🐍🌵
Amazing, what you two did!!!!!!
Hell yeah ladies!
Dope film
Thank You !! 🙂
Awesome work!
so they had single AND 2 half ropes going up? Was one section more hazardous?
Every pitch appears to have been led on a single rope, trailing a second haul/tag line. At one point on pitch #6 it looks as if the second rope is being clipped but, as becomes clear a few moments later, that is illusory.
Awesome work, Bronwyn and Kelsey! By the powers of modern videography I almost feel like I got to participate in the adventure with you 😊. You have surely helped solidify the classic status of this climb. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a line up at the base of the route when I get around to trying it!
👏👏👏👏
Great send you kids! Great film also.
Great film!!
pure awsomness!!
Well done by all!
There’s so much route potential out there
Or Dolomite Tower ;)
Great climb! Congrats!!! For the records "La Popa " is the rear of the ship and not the head of it. The head of a ship is called "La proa" Just trying to help with that 5:29
