In Korea, if you're poor, you don't have the latest Samsung phones to live with and a whole ass house in Gangnam to live alone in. You cannot go around the city and eat whatever you want until you have alot of money. Every year, common men in Korea have to go to military for a few days once they complete their duty. All men aren't that handsome, not all of them have huge ass bungalow type houses.

High school students on an average have to study for like 8 hours everyday and sometimes have self study sessions at night in school till like 10:30. Getting a good job is difficult too. Yes *ABSOLUTELY*. I was tired of Korea so I moved to America 14 years ago believing that "anywhere else" is better than where I'm living.
What young kids don't know is that you will miss your family, you will miss the food, etc; you will miss everything you left and you will start to regret all the missed opportunities in your home country. The job market is OK but it's not better than in Korea. Also, you better learn the new language or you're more useless than a wet stick in mud.
Hindsight is a bitch. To all young Koreans, don't be me and stay where you are; Running away and believing it's better somewhere else is far from wise.
If you want to move, you *HAVE* to be strong and resilient; most Koreans that move here go back in about 5 years because they miss Korea and they can't handle the cultural differences . I managed to survive and do well here, but I am a rare exception. Even after all this, every night I regret leaving my home country.
Don't be me. Stay where you are. Don't be retarded.
Only spoiled entitled brats believe in "hell Joseon" fuck them they have no idea how blessed they are to be born in such a magnificent country fuck them.

I've lived in Korea for almost 3 years and i somehow understand "hell Joseon". Korea is a nice country to live for me, generally. Despite the stress/struggles, I enjoyed living there because I felt safer and everything is more efficient and systematic than in my home country. However, for someone who is just starting or someone in a min. paying job or a scholarship student in a budget (like I used to), this country could be so harsh too. The cost of living is so high. Food and rent is so expensive. Everyone is so competitive. Education is given such high regard yet job opportunities are scarce even for them. I feel like studying hard does not always guarantee a good future here. Kids as young as elementary study almost 24/7. They go to hagwons after hagwons after their actual school even on Sundays. Everyone is so pressured to do well and get into the top universities or in big companins. In the process, people get so drained from all the societal pressure and the expectations. Hence, the term Hell Joseon :(

“If u leave because u’re not satisfied in korea.. u’ll probably not going to satisfied anywhere” totally agree with this statement
    Edit :
First of all i want to say sorry for my very short comment. It’s very short and made alot of people take it out of context. That comment not even from myself, i was just agreeing to a man in the video who voiced his opinion. Fyi, this video talks about south korea particularly. But what i mean is, if south korean don’t change their mentality and mindset, they will never satisfied anywhere, even if they migrate to another country it won’t work, unless they willing to change their mindset and opinions especially about their neighbouring countries like south east asian countries. I have friends who work in tourism, they so pissed at me why would i so addicted to Kdrama. I asked them why wouldn't i? My friends explained to me how south korean tourists behave. Korean know the rest of the world especially us in SEA countries so idolize them, so when they visiting SEA countries they behave like they are better then the rest of us. They talked so loud as if like they want people to know that they’re korean so people would stare at them. They seemed like the attention. We’re not talking about korean celebrities, here we talk about ordinary Kcitizen. This is what my friends told me. I personally never encounter korean people eventho so many korean visit our country especially Kota Kinabalu in Sabah state. Anyway, i can’t wait this pandemic to end so i can go to south korea, trying its foods and enjoying its beautiful nature.

Seems to me like the same thing is happening across lots of developed nations: the cost of living is constantly increasing but people's earning potential is at worst, decreasing and at best, stagnant. You have thousands and thousands of university educated people settling for jobs they're overqualified for and more than likely being underpaid for. The gap between the insanely wealthy and...well, everyone else is getting wider and wider.

  • @Princess-di2zx
    @Princess-di2zx 6 лет назад +3866

Well this is my personal opinion. I say sorry early, because i may hurt some koreans or korean supporters.
    .
    .
Okay, firstly i'm from southeast asia country, Indonesia. The country which most of koreans think as poor country. But there is one thing, that foreigners like european, or american, korean didn't know that statistically proven, indonesian youth generation is the most happiest in the world.
    .
    How could that be?
    .
We are indeed poor. Our tecnology is soso. Our country income is very low, there are many corruptions, and other bad news.
    .
But our mentality is gold. I think this is what is important with the generation. Indonesian people is very easy going, laugh alot, joke alot. We maybe poor and living less, but we don't affraid to fight and struggle.
    .
We don't affraid to halp other people too. Some people may think, that if gou have less, how could you help people? But in Indonesia, i witnessed the poor helping the other. So it's not about the number, it's the mentality. And religion and spiritual intelligence. Why is it intelligence? Because there are so many people, that don't have the ability to believe in God in particular religion. The media may stirr up people to see the bad side of religious cluntries, but it's not true. We are living eventho we are poor because we are religious. Muslim, christian, catholic, Buddhist, Hindus. And others... We keep being strong because we believe in God.
    .
And those are that lack in Korean. They are so materialistic. Like obviously. They are always aiming for the high standard, regardless of the reality! Even the government i think (i said sorry before) if they have not enough money, they should stop doing dreamy things for korea and make the citizen for it. Yes, korea is super clean, internet superfast, the buildings and the streets super fancy, but what... If the citizens couldn't pay the tax because it's killing them. And the already attached insurance. (thanks God we dont have that in Indonesia) it is choking and strangling. And they love to use credit cards, (it is a loan to pay, but the used it like it's a loose leaf thaf fell off the trees?
    .
Korea can stand back up after the colonializm by Japan, just like Indonesia. It's good that they are very progressive. But mentality is first. Humanity is first. Suicide, bullying, cyber crime is very high. There is no use if they only fix the security, the cctv camera, the automatic lock door, the police. Fix the people. Stop advertising rich peoples, rich neighborhood, rich segmented mall, branded stuff. Tbose things stressed people. Theh get stressed at school, bullyed by friends, poor parents, and have no religion to ease the pain? What will they do? Please save them!
    .
I don't say Indonesia is fancy and perfect place to live in. At least, i can say i'm happy living here. With loving parents, slow internet, sometimes flooding in the rain, many mosquitoes, but very happy. :)) don't aim the number, aim the ease in your heart.

Food is so cheap in Korea (you can have dinner under $5!), cosmetics (so many choices, so cheap, so high quality!!), clothes (the fashion, quality, and price is so low!!!), technology (phones, computers, home appliances like humidifiers, rice cookers, so cheap and high quality!!). Ultrafast internet (FASTEST IN THE WORLD), so many things open 24 hours a day (you barely get that anywhere, check), extremely safe (go to America, you will be afraid to walk outside after dark in 99% of cities), transportation is super reliable (so many subway lines!!), no beggars / drug addicts bothering you on the street (I live in Cincinnati, I have to talk with them everyday about giving them money or giving a cigarette, many times a day), streets are ultra clean (here, it's normal to have just trash and broken glass on the sidewalks), things like jjimjilbang or pcbang as means of ultra-cheap way of having a place to stay for the night (pay around 10000 won ($8-9) to stay, as opposed to ~$40 minimum in a disgusting motel somewhere in America). Long distance transportation (buses) - so cheap and convenient!
Koreans. You have no idea how great your country is. You really don't appreciate it enough.
Also, I am a student at a US university - I have many Korean friends. Their vision of Korea changes so quickly when they live here. They all come with this idea that the US will be so much better than Korea, and they all end up being homesick after just a few weeks. They start complaining about random people talking to them on the street, that they cannot walk outside with their wallet hanging from their neck, that everything is closed after 10pm, that all restaurants are so pricy, that the internet is so slow, that their apartment is smelly and dirty and old. I am not making those things up. After going to Korea 2 years nothing impresses me anymore. Korea is just so advanced.

I think the reason why the younger generation does not enjoy living in their own country is because even though Korea has an increasing economy and technology the country is still largely conservative and still upholds many '50s/'60s ideals. Not to mention, Korea is so heavily focused upon study, study, study that your whole life kinda depends on one single test when you're only in high school that determines if you get into one of the top SKY universities. I mean students even commit suicide if they do not pass. It's very disheartening. I think in Korea there is only room for one to move vertically through society.

Bunnii where are you from? It's happen in every asian country. In Japan they go to school untill night too, just like korean.
      .
I'm from Indonesia we treat school and education the same. Aiming so high, only praising the science and math major, not appreciating artsy majors, and very hard to get a job.
And in Indonesia, we have two major big final tests. First finals in highschool (yes we can be not passing and repeat the class if we don't achive standard grade)
Second, entering university test, just like 수능 in korea. And were they many not passing students? So many. What do they do? They live well with other way to success.
      .
we are also conservative and religious. BUT WE ARE HAPPY.
      .
Those things in korea happen anywhere. Those conservative community happen anywhere. But the fact in korea, why they kill themself for not passing the test is.
      .
      1. If they don't pass they can not apply to get a job
      2. They still can get a low salary job, but that's not consider good things in korea.
      3. Even after they get good salary job in korea, they keep wanting more. Luxurious car, clothes, have coffee in a cafe, have castle house and so on.
      4. And not to forget, self loveless. Even the parents will say their kids is "not pretty, too fat" it's like amazing how they're asking their kids face, eventhough their face is an heir from the parents. The kids can never have a face like junjihyun or angeline jolie, because they're not heir kids!
      .
And please why korean just accept that their face is looking like that. What they aim. They are korean but want to have face like angelina jolie, or davikah, or zhang ziyi?
      .
I've seen many koreans living outside korea and keep their original face and THEY ARE PRETTY.
      .
You know, it's not my problem, it's them. But so tired to see them whine all the time.

I've resided in two western countries, once as a regular student in my academic career and the other time as an exchange student. And later I have a plan to move to US or Germany for a postdoctoral position or even a job. So here I can point out the negative side of Korea that most foreign people could not understand.
I believe the fundamental problem is not the quality of life. Of course it's not good, but it at least surpasses the average of all the developed countries. And as all of us know, the economic situations are going worse and worse worldwide.
The real problem is our mindsets and social morals still do not catch up our fast economic growth. Yes, we've achieved Korea of these days from the poorest country in the world in just 50 years. But it costed the chance to improve our society in a "right" way, that is based on a social agreement like the west did. Our politics were dictatorship during the growth era. We had to be *insanely addicted to 'fastest' and 'best'*, while all others became 'losers' whom society did not give any chance to recover. It resulted in the distorted structure of these days that I cannot imagine how to handle.
Korean society has *rigid vertical structure*, partially due to the Confucian legacies and partially from the authoritarian regime. Thus, each individual becomes very *rude or ignorant to your followers* because they're considered *'inferior'* to you. It also restricts people from showing up creative ideas freely. Moreover, a person with successful individual career tends to use it *not for the entire society* but only for his or her own avarice. People tend to believe that one's social success is only resulted from his/her own struggle so one does not need to pay back to the society. Also, moral hazards are severe both in politics and in economics. Approximately ten to twenty Chaebol families *control* the nation's entire economy while they're closely related to conservative political leaders who are *nullifying* prosecutions over the Chaebol's *illegal crimes and corruptions*.
What's more disappointing is that even normal people tend to commit similar faults when they have power. An owner of a small store is responding to his part-time worker in a same passion with an owner of Samsung is doing to its front line workers. We criticize for a corruption of CEOs but do not have a problematic sense for not giving a minimum wage to a part-time worker in our store. We're studying and working almost *hardest in the OECD*, but even the hardest worker among us *cannot* catch up the life quality of the people *inherited* from their social estate.
All the problems come and go to make the quality of life in Korea much worse than the numerical standards (HDI, GDP per capita, or whatever) suggest.

And though it's very projective opinion, it's very hard to earn money with scholastic majors like philosophy, literature, natural science, sociology and so on. As my major is natural science, this is why I want to leave Korea later on. The country is too much focused on applied fields and it's why we don't have any Nobel science prize winners unlike Japan or China.

I will admit I have just basic knowledge about politics and such, but I don’t understand why the Scandinavian/Nordic systems don’t get copied more often.
I imagine it’s simply easier said than done.

I live in the Philippines, a developing country with good economic growth each year (except this year due to the pandemic). I’m well-educated, I have a master’s degree which I got from one of the best universities in Asia to get my degree from. Despite its bad rap, I love living in the Philippines for so many reasons.
    - Filipino parents are balanced when it comes to strictness and leniency. While they want you to be the best, they pressure you less to be perfect. They are also quite tolerant. I’m gay and it didn’t take long for my parents to accept me.
    - Filipino culture is about “being”, not “having”. While there is materialism in the culture as a result of the prevailing capitalist economic system, social relationships are given more premium in Filipino society. We care so much more about our relationships than our social status.
    - There’s a strong social support in my country, especially emotionally. It’s not difficult to find comfort here, even from a stranger.
    - Filipinos are not just tolerated but are encouraged to express their emotions. We understand that bottling up our emotions can be destructive for us and people around us in the long run.
    - Filipinos are emotionally intelligent. They know how to deal with stress and pressure well. We have one of the lowest suicide rates in the world.
    - Filipino society is the most gender equal society in Asia, included in the top ten worldwide. There’s less rigid gender roles here. We can literally become who we want to be.
    - We have relatively good social welfare. There’s free education in public universities and universal healthcare. Our employers cannot fire us without justifiable grounds. We are entitled to work leaves. We are one of the countries with most holidays, which means double pay if we work on said days. Also, 13th month pay is mandated by the law.
    - In the Philippines, we work to live, not live to work.
    - All, and I mean ALL, towns here have a fiesta, which is a day (sometimes days) in a year where your town literally transforms into a massive party. During this time, all residents prepare food and everyone is invited to join the feast, even strangers!
For Filipinos, life is meant to be lived NOW. Worrying too much about the future steals you of the time you could have spent relishing the present moment with your family, friends and loved ones. While this has negative consequences like we are particularly not good with planning, etc., living in the present allows us to make the most out of our limited time here on earth.

While I was in Korea I noticed my friends said a lot were unemployed because of the lack of opportunities. Truth is, they were unemployed because they ONLY wanted to work in a big company. I think it’s because their standards are so high and if they don’t get that kind of job they feel they’ve failed. I’m from a third world country so I always felt grateful and happy in Korea, good meals were the same price as in my own country but with an amazing difference if I compared salaries. I think it’s a matter of perspective and it’s okay to feel the way they feel because of their own standards.

Umm... this isn't the big brain take you think it is. Very weird comment to say the least. The big companies pay the best and offer the only path to happiness in South Korea. this idea is literally engraved into the population from birth. Other jobs are low paying and sometimes not even minimum wage. This comment implies that they aren't "grateful" for being offered a crummy job that will make them even more depressed. This isn't "unrealistic standards" by any means, this is the standard set by the capitalist system in South Korea.

I really hate that some people think that S. Korea (and Japan) is 100% glamour and it is like in the dramas or everybody is attractive like idols. It is rude. If you want to go to Korea (and live there) just don't have high expectations of the country because its people is just normal people, like you and me, they are not aegyo machines or handsome CEOs
And also, Korea and Japan have better standard of life than (I dare to say) South American countries.

Korean people would realize that korea is the best place than any other countries only when they leave korea. I am korean who live in Australia. I have the citizenship of Australia and good job here. But I and most of my korean friends here wanna back to korea and miss those days living in korea all the time. Living in korea is so convenient and safe. They just have too high expectation to everything I guess. 😅

Grass is always greener on the other side. Koreans have really unrealistic fantasies about Europe & many of the things they take for granted in Korea like high-speed internet, wifi everywhere & efficient transport system is lacking in many other countries.

+Fade Away I'd rather live in a country though that doesn't have all these things you've mentioned and can go home at 4:30-5pm Monday to Friday and not overwork every day and possibly also have to come on weekends as if work is the only purpose in life. And efficient Transport System? Are you talking only Seoul? A Korean friend of mine came to Germany to work here and he says that he is grateful he doesn't have to work his behind off...

    • @fadeaway3716
      @fadeaway3716 8 лет назад +3

+Isabella1680 Never said that Korea was better or vice versa but it is Koreans themselves that perpetuate the negative aspects of their culture.
They are the ones that choose to collectively work overtime without getting paid.
Always complaining over and over again without trying to change anything. All talk, no action.
Korea needs a social rebellion but I don't see it ever happening.
As for Europe; here's the state of Modern Day europe.
Streets are dirty, people are rude, services are poor, refugees everywhere, Islamification ongoing. I wouldn't want to live in Korea but Europe isn't any better. And by Europe, I exclude Northern Europe.
Northern Europe is a LOT better.

+Fade Away I lived in South Korea for a couple years; Pusan and Seoul specifically. I'd say there are pros and cons to living in any country. You get used to them the longer you stay in a specific place. As for the transportation, yes it is very efficient. Seoul has like 15 subway lines that all intersect. You can get to pretty much any where in the city. It was extremely convenient. Other pros: fast internet, low crime, cheap cost of living. As for cons: polluted, everyone smokes in doors, couldn't drink tap water, quality control issues on some products, extremely crowded and small living spaces. Neutral: Spicy food, the squat toilets took getting used to. So yeah, not terrible, but not perfect either.

    • @mdfsticks581
      @mdfsticks581 8 лет назад +1

+John Holmes I lived in Korea for 5 years. You can drink tap water in Korea. It's very clean. Korean people just prefer to drink their "natural mineral water" that's all. Korea was famous for their "clean water" or "Yaksoo" which means "this water contains so many minerals it's good for your health" kind of water. so I guess that's why they don't usually drink tap water.

Koreans need to learn that comparing yourself to others will only make you vain or bitter. As long as you have a roof over your head, food to eat and clothes to wear you should be happy. Go to work and enjoy each day, and don't allow others to dictate to you what success is. Sometimes it's just being alive.

Like free healthcare, free education, the diversity, and our history however the cons are the crime rate (especially where I live where there is a lot of drugs), the government, the weather and the cost of houses in certain areas e.g. London. Also, if your a kpop or kdrama fan that could be a reason as well. So when foreigners come to south korea, we're not seeing the complete picture or things they might be dealing with on a day to day basis. Watching some south korean vloggers it seems like the society puts a lot of pressure on students to look a certain way or get into the top universities.

Well, this video is from 2 years ago, I don't know if their opinions have changed but I'm just going to voice out what I think. Since I live in a developing country, I kind of envy of how Korea provides great public facilities for their citizens, such as transportations, education, health care etc. So many things that I wish I could easily get that in here. In some part of our nation, there are still children who aren't able to go to school because of financial problem, there are teachers who don't even get paid, nasty public transportation, poverty, starvation even in some isolated island there are still tribes who haven't touched yet by civilization.
Since hallyu wave invation there are also more and more people here especially women who have desire to move & live in Korea and yet the the young generation in Korea wants to live somewhere else.
And surprisingly the happiness index here is quite high around 70, it means most likely they quite happy for living in a country which is considered for being under developed. The problem is probably from their society pressures and mindsets. They could be happier if only the younger ones try to break the old society system and create their own (hopefully) ideal standard of living. As the people in my country, well we knew that our government sucks but most of us just trying to make the best out of it by staying positive and be grateful for what we have.

No matter where ever/what country...the grass can always look greener on the other side. If anyone is struggling, the struggle is real & the existing situation is experienced all the same even if relocated to any other given area globally. It also heavily depends upon each individual's outlook/perspective as well. As a person, you have a choice to choose whether to allow any life experiences/circumstances to make you "better/wiser/understanding/stronger" or "bitter/ungrateful/unforgiving/depressed" as an outcome because of it. There is a saying that I like & believe by Steve Maraboli, it is "Happiness has to do with your mindset, not with outside circumstances." It clearly explains why some of the most extremely poorest people with absolutely nothing can still live feeling extremely happy & why some of the most extremely richest folks can somehow continuously be living their lives feeling extremely unhappy.

This was an interesting insight. I trained a student who’s from South Korea. I asked her if she wanted to go back home to work. Besides the work qualifications/license of our field not transferring over internationally, she said no. She enjoyed living in the US. Now, I can understand her perspective a bit more. Thank you for sharing!

over 100,000 South Koreans live in Beijing, where I come from. And many live in other cities in the north of China. South Korea is a very stressful place to live in. Just look at its population density and the competitive environment in schools.

When you live in a tiny country with more than 50 million people, the competition for everything must be fierce. I definitely don't think America is perfect, but it wasn't a big deal for me to go to public school. I had transportation to school and home for free. I didn't have any extra tutoring after school and when i entered highschool, i didn't have parents so i was on my own. I was able to graduate with good grades and went to a community college easily and became a nurse. I got a job as soon as i got my license as an RN and i make a very good living. If you make good choices here you can succeed. Your level of success depends on the level of your goal. I could have just as easily not gone to college and become a low wage earner and struggled every day for everything. I could have had children while in high school or a million other things. But i was able to go to school and get a job and live comfortably. I am not wealthy at all, i don't go on fancy vacations or travel and i don't live the high life. but it is a good life. i definitely think we have more opportunities here simply because of the size of our country and the population density.

    • @lazyhong6109
      @lazyhong6109 8 лет назад +3

@Yuki Yamazaki I live in India, and I've stayed out with my friends all night, sometimes have returned home completely alone safely at midnight too. Yes I agree a couple of cities in India are not safe for women (Delhi for example). Media does exaggerate the crime rates (specially against women) in India. Besides, as a woman you always have to be cautious, no matter whether you're in India or some other country. :)

I think every country has fields they have to improve and I don’t know how it’s in Korea but people who are not satisfied with the current situation are part of the engine and we need them to become better. I wish Korea all the best and hope that we will develop our countries and make them stranger economically and socially. Make them better places to live

I'm half korean and I lived in Korea for 10+ years. It is very competitive with education. Sometimes people judged me because I don't look like a full korean which really frustrates me, too. Comments like: "Look, there is an American." really annoys me because I think it's very rude for people to point and whisper when I fully understand what they are saying. I am also half Australian. I moved to Australia 2 years ago and I can say that it was more comfortable living in Korea. The supermarkets and other facilities are nearby unlike Australia :,)
