Usher sang this song with feelings that he have memories with ...we all have been there. When Usher stop and pose for a moment ....he didn't forget no words. Look at the video at his back ground singers.....everybody was emotional.....that's foreal ..............
dang this almost made me drop one when he got emotional lol...this is the Usher i miss....he has turned pop and commercial...no more real r&b smh....Usher come back to us!
+David Hill noooo. I'm sorry. I'm not suggesting that you learn something new. I'm saying that your comment allowed me to learn something new. I've never heard of Leon Russell until you mentioned him here, so thank you!
David Hill yes I just wrote this song in my song book. I always ask Google who wrote the song because I title the writer next to it. be for I perform it I will give credit to Mr. Leon Russell
Usher needs to do a soul album. He got the skills and deserves the respect. 12-15 tracks. No hip hop. It will put him where no other black artist have been bc he is already diamond as far as sells. I know its something he always wanted to do but the labels only care about money.
This song came in my spirit. I remember Donny Hathaway sung it and I looked it up.. afterwards Usher's version popped up..This young blood sung this song from his soul! Donny's version always bring me to tears.😢 Listening to Usher's version does the same 😢
This is a song for those that truly understand it is something that you sing for some-ONE....Those that can't appreciate and understand that will never really understand this song....Thanks to Leon Russell (lyricist) for conceiving a brilliant song that can be possessed by the common man or the brilliant singer and either way, be as poingnant and profound as anything ever written....
Thank Leon for the writing, Praise DONNIE for his delivery. Can't no one touch Donnie, the only one who comes close is Mick of Simply Red. Pretty good Usher, gotta little growing to do. Maybe later. R.I.P. DONNIE!!!! You own this song!. Hands down.
There have been many covers of this terrific song. I too think Donny Hathaway's version is the best. I can listen to his version over and over again. He was a great musician as well as a singer. I swoon just imagining the guy of my dreams saying those very words to me. The awesome vocal coupled with his flawless piano playing is simply beautiful and timeless as well. Oh and Usher did ok :)
Yes! but his daughter has picked up his legacy and has mastered this song! bravo to Lalah Hathaway, she's dynamite! as for Usher, he made a few mistakes, and I believe he forgot the words. being a professional judge on the voice correcting them when they cracked or forgot a line should only show that everyone makes mistakes. I do love Usher ( just saying).
Pamela Anderson Lalah's voice is SO much like her dad's (her mom was a classically trained singer)....her sister's is different but also nice. My favorite Lalah song is "It's Something" (not the Snarky Puppy one that won the Grammy, the FIRST one, from her earlier album). This song has been covered by almost EVERYONE, check the list on line. Bizarre.
Pamela Anderson On The Voice, he's a coach, not a judge (and man that show is just....suckage!; calling them "coaches" instead of judges is one way Daly and others though they would distinguish themselves, that and the chair gimmick: oops)....I love Usher's stuff (though I am not sure why "I don't mind" is getting so much airplay; I thought "She came to give it to me" was a lot better, and "New Flame" isn't nearly as good as some of his other stuff was....nothing will ever catch "Yeah!" and "Caught Up." ;-) but this rendition of Russell's classic is pretty bad, IMO.
OMG, boi, u r the BOMB!!! I am 'old' but I know my Donny, but U R on Point. I love this rindition. Go USHER. U R officially 1 of my favs. LUV UR young ass.
Hey Usher... it´s the best song I heared from you!!! Like your voice very much.. but it gets lost so much in this hip hop shit...!!! thanks for this here!!!
Usher is emotional at the time when he stopped and posed for a minute ... Usher got choked up, singing this song it might have brought some memories to he once had feelings with
What do you mean never give Leon his due? This song has been covered by the who's who in music from almost every type of music... From Andy Williams to Christina Aguilera & Herbie Hancok, to DMX & Bizzy Bone!! Leon has been collectiong pay checks on this ever since he wrote it!! Donny I agree has the best cover and the best interpretation of this song... That's just my opinion... U like Leons version and that's cool, and what music is really all about!
hello if any of us sisters and brothers that perform this song like me please give credit to Mr Leon Russell the song writer. RIP On behalf of black people we tx u for this artful song
WOW this is what happen when you take have a song that is so powerful as this, it put u in a place where you have to show up or show out. Not many people will take on this song only the TRUE SINGERS WILL and there are not Many out these days (trey songs take note)
Usher has taken on an Herculean task in his attempt at covering a beautiful love ballad which challenges the singer to be well prepared. Usher does satisfactorily, especially during the second half when he shows emotion as he sings. His falsetto feat has been more of a melodic "life-jacket" rather than a stylistic device. His is a "Comparatively Fair Performance" of a sweet but difficult-to-sing ballad - Usher's. Donny and Eulalah Hathaway, Kenny Lattimore, Ray Charles and many others have tried their talents at this tune with varying degrees of credits. Donny and Eulalah Hathaway have, without doubt, rendered the best versions.
Have never seen this before, but was surprised when his voice cracked. Sounded like he was gong for power in the tenor, but his voice slipped (I don't even know what I'm talking about here) Even so, he never backed down from this performance though, and I gotta give him his propers for that!
AMEN!!! U ain't neva lied 'bout "White washed R&B"!!! The only thing in this generation close to the Original SOUL Music is Neo-Soul w/ REAL artists like Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Angie Stone, Jill Scott, Badu, Musiq, Anthony Hamilton, Raheem DeVaughn & a FEW others....RIP R&B!
No one will ever match Donny Hathaway's version, but there lots of great interpretations of this, one of the best songs of the last 50 years in my opinion.
Ain’t nobody trying to match Donny’s version of this song, why do it always have to be a competition with everything for you idiots that don’t know squat about real soulful singing stfu 🤐🤡🙄
A great version of Leon Russell's original version. One of my favorites songs and Usher does a great job. There are so many versions of this - a song for you- and I love each one, but nobody does it like Leon. A close second is Ray Charles. Either way, just nice to hear all the different artist sing this song, from Amy Winehouse to Simply Red.
Have to disagree a little. Donny Hathaway’s version is TOP TIER. Only other time besides Donnys that I’ll even entertain listening to another singer is Lalah Hathaway.
@lyte1259 Have you heard the Donny Hathaway version? The parts where he pauses have no high notes in them so I have no idea what you are talking about, he pauses briefly and miss a few words before the solitary long note, after that there are no words, listen to the original and you'll see.
I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life on stages With 10, 000 people watching But we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you I know your image of me is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly And darling can't you see There's no one more important to me Baby can't you see through me Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you You taught me precious secrets Of a true love, withholding nothing You came out in front and I was hiding Now I'm so much better And if my words don't come together Listen to the melody Cuz my love is in there hiding I love you in a place where there's no space or time I love you for my life You' re a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone and I was singing this song to you
He couldn't hear the music and catch the key. It's actually on the band for playing the wrong key initially. Not Usher's fault. It's tough when the key isn't right. This one is on the band.....
@lyfechanges09 I agree. Usher used to provide us with good, classic, memorable R&B sounds. "Real" R&B artists started disappearing, and I always thought that Usher would hang in there, and hold true to his original sound. Unfortunately, he did indeed become too commercial, and is no longer the same type of artist that he used to be. Still talented, however...just not the same.
Usher has some of the best vocals in the game besides me, I always say...but he has no soul for this song. This song is SOUL....period....Cute Effort tho.
He got really emotional after saying "You came out front when I was hiding..." He is really singing to someone. Chilli. Listen to how he delivers the words "I love you!"
What...Donny's song???? No one can sing this like Leon Russell. It is HIS song and all who have tried will never touch this man. If you were/are ever lucky enough to hear him sing this live you would certainly change your mind!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Temptations version of this song and Ray Charles versions's are truly amazing, both have the absolutely best orchestration and vocals you have ever heard on this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Willie Nelson has the most mellow, singularly touching version, just Willie, his guitar and his lost highway voice! Usher forgot the words near the middle of this so he just let the band play! Oh well, you can't say he can't sing, but shit, go hear the over versions I mentioned, they are goddamned haunting!
Usher is a great singer, and this performance confirms it. A Song for You is the litmus test for vocal talent.
FreeRadio
this song pretty much sings itself. It such a beautiful song. Props to leon russell for writing it
Ditto!
Donny should be proud. I love this song, so soul stirring ❤️
Usher is at another level we already know that he killed that song. The pianist also did a great job.
I Love this song! My man sings it to me just about every day. I always get teary eyes when he sings it! This is such a beautiful song! 😢
This is why usher is so good at what he does. He don't need no autotune...
Usher is one of few that can sing this song with the passion and feeling that donnie had
This is FANTASTIC!!! Usher should release his rendition of this most beautiful of songs.
I have to say that Usher is one of the few artists that come out hot and actually stay hot as far as their music goes
That's my boY... Usher is truly one of the greatest "Real" singers of today.
Usher sang this song with feelings that he have memories with ...we all have been there. When Usher stop and pose for a moment ....he didn't forget no words. Look at the video at his back ground singers.....everybody was emotional.....that's foreal ..............
this man can literally sing anything 🔥
dang this almost made me drop one when he got emotional lol...this is the Usher i miss....he has turned pop and commercial...no more real r&b smh....Usher come back to us!
Wow. Wow....WOW!!!! Usher is amazing. This isn't the original, but wow. He's amazing.
I think that he did a wonderful job on this song. Finally put some soul into his singing.
I love this song.. Usher did great but I love when Donny Hathaway sing the song! Wonderful job!
R.I.P. Leon Russell, who wrote and originally recorded "A Song for You." He was 74.
okay, so now that I've looked up Leon Russell I see where Makonnen and Ice JJ Fish get there styles from. hmph. Learn something new everyday.
2adonisandbeyond Thanks for the advice. Leon Russell crafted this song in 1971. The most popular version has been Donny Hathaway's version.
For the longest time I thought Donny Hathaway made this song. Shout out to Leon!
That moment he stopped was the depth of his soul reaching out from his own personal life . We all had that ... I have .
this song pretty much sings itself. It such a beautiful song. Props to leon russell for writing it

The Kings Of R And B Usher and R-Kelly 🤴👍👍👍👍👍👍👑👑👑
This song came in my spirit. I remember Donny Hathaway sung it and I looked it up.. afterwards Usher's version popped up..This young blood sung this song from his soul! Donny's version always bring me to tears.😢 Listening to Usher's version does the same 😢

Not normally an Usher fan.....but he hits this out of the park.
Great performance!!!
Indeed.
Brilliant, poignant and profound indeed.
Usher is just amazing ❤❤
Beautiful rendition to Donny Hathaway.! Beautiful Usher..!!!!!
Love his voice!
awesome really !!! usher has a very great performance and good skill but this time show me the his inside. ~!!!! i love that.!
Hands down.

I miss this Usher. That pop shit is what is selling right now! We have to dig in the crates for good R&B.
No one will ever match Donny Hathaway's version, but there lots of great interpretations of this, one of the best songs of the last 50 years in my opinion.
Bob Cummings Well Said!
Ain’t nobody trying to match Donny’s version of this song, why do it always have to be a competition with everything for you idiots that don’t know squat about real soulful singing stfu 🤐🤡🙄

No one touches Karen Carpenter's version. Written by the late Leon Russell, best Keyboard player who ever lived. RIP Leon, a beautiful man...
jjs490 how about Justin Timberlake version
Usher can sing his ass off, but I think the key was too high for him. He struggled with some of those high notes...still the boy can sing though.
Grande!!!!!
❤hey usher
true love, song for you, when my life is over OMG. my fav

Magic!!!!!!
You Got That Right!!
Great pianist here
I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life on stages
With 10, 000 people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you
I know your image of me is what I hoped to be
I treated you unkindly
And darling can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Baby can't you see through me
Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you
You taught me precious secrets
Of a true love, withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
Now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
Cuz my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You' re a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song to you
He couldn't hear the music and catch the key. It's actually on the band for playing the wrong key initially. Not Usher's fault. It's tough when the key isn't right. This one is on the band.....

I love you Usher baby
Aww oh no. What year was this? Why was he crying? why did he stop singing? It was a lot going on in this performance :-(
I CRIED BECAUSE I COULD TELL HE WAS HOLDING BACK TEARS FOR THE LATE ARTIST AALIYAH...THIS IS SO SAD
gosto muito dele, meu sonho é assistir um show dele
Usher has some of the best vocals in the game besides me, I always say...but he has no soul for this song. This song is SOUL....period....Cute Effort tho.
