    Is it possible to make the loaf without the fruit?

    • @geoffsbakingblog
      @geoffsbakingblog  2 года назад

      Hi Diedra. Yes you can make it without the fruit, though it wont be quite so sticky, and the flavour profile will be different. But I am sure it would still be good.

      Hi Henrietta. I love this, and find it difficult to keep it, but it does get better if stored for a couple of days. I am looking at trying a different recipe to make it more like Soreen, if I can work it out.

    Hi Geoff , I remember my mum making malt loaf when I was young, I’m 64 now so almost 60 years ago.
    I distinctly remember that it had ‘all bran’ in the recipe. It was also darker too.
    I think you could achieve the darker shade with a bit of gravy browning though.
    Very good vlog.
    Thank you xx

    • @geoffsbakingblog
      @geoffsbakingblog  4 года назад +2

      Hi Jackie. I thought about making the malt loaf darker, rather like those proprietary ones you can buy in the shops, but having tasted the result of my bake I decided to leave it just as it was, as it tasted so good.

    • @jackieblakemore56
      @jackieblakemore56 4 года назад

      @@geoffsbakingblog oh yes, I’m sure it tasted lovely but I bet that’s how the ‘shop bought’ ones achieve the dark colour, bit like you do with wedding/Xmas cake. Looked lovely anyway.

    Hi Geoff, Is this loaf the same as the Veda that was sold in Ireland? I loved it, it was not a sticky loaf and did not have sultanas in it. I remember when sliced as kids we would squeeze the sides of the centre of bread and make a shape resembling a lady the centre being her waist and the rounded shape of the top of the bread was her head, then the bottom formed the skirt. It was so playable and did not crumble. The reason for all this information is to see if you may be able to re-create this loaf. I live up the gulf of the Eyre peninsula on the fringe of the desert in South Australia. I would certainly like once more to taste this bread, too old to go back to Ireland.

    • @geoffsbakingblog
      @geoffsbakingblog  4 года назад

      Hi Kathy, I have never seen, or even heard of Veda. However I wondered whether that was similar to Soreen which is the malt loaf (with fruit in) that we can buy in England. So I did a search and the results imply that the two are very similar. So, if that is the case then this sticky malt loaf will have some similarity to Veda. You could try this recipe, without the fruit, and I think you may find it quite close to what you remember.

    • @geoffsbakingblog
      @geoffsbakingblog  4 года назад

      Hi again Kath, I have done a bit more searching and have found a couple of recipes for Veda, using Bread flour, roasted malt barley flour and nut brown malt flour(now known as crystal flour 150). But only very small amounts of the last two. If I can easily obtain some, I may give this a go.
