On Friday, May 7th, Canadian North said farewell to their second-last Boeing 737-200 - a 40-year-old bird, C-GOPW.
It did a brief flight around Edmonton early in the morning before it took off on what is likely to be its final flight in Canadian North colours - a ferry flight to Trois-Rivières, Quebec.
Rumour has it that this aircraft is headed to Air Inuit - so hopefully it'll fly a little longer!

Farewell C-GOPW, hopefully Air Inuit will fly her for a few more years.
I always find it crazy when these older planes get retired. Been around for how many decades and we always just assume they'll be there, then in the blink of an eye, they're gone!
I flew this gorgeous aeroplane YEG-YZF in 2018 and she was 38 then. Glad to see she has worked through 40 years and hopefully a few more besides. A legendary aircraft I feel very proud and lucky to have flown.
Dad:
Why are you crying so dang loud?
just seeing the title and thumbnail made me cry and mourn
I confirm it to you, it is not any more a rumor, the plane was bought by Air Inuit. The company now owns SPW and OPW, two former Pacific Western aircraft.
I hope that these old 737's stay around for a bit longer. They are a big piece of aviation history. Awesome video!
I like the classic Boeing 737 👍 Lets hope she will still have some further years with Air Inuit. Great video!
It's nice to see an old bird still bird still flying strong!
An amazing classic with a huge impact in aviation history. Farewell old girl.
I’m not crying you are.
I hope the rumours are correct and she stays in Canada. Wonderful (but sad) video. Thanks!
Awesome catch! Love the 200 series. Back in the 90's when I doing a lot of flying up and down the coast of California and when Southwest still flew 737-200 I loathed flying the type and wanted to fly the 300's or 500's. But now how I wish I can still fly the 200's. You don't know what you have until you don't have it.
If I'm not mistaken, that is a gravel deflector behind the front nose wheel. My Son flew one of those birds for Air North out of Whitehorse. Great aircraft.
I remember these were quite common when I was a kid in the 80s. I'd see them at YVR from Air Canada and Pacific Western. I remember seeing British Caledonian airlines" 707s. I even flew on a DC 8 from Points of Call airlines (anyone remember them?) and a Pan Am 747 to the UK the year before Lockerbie. The airport sounds were different: louder with a more noticeable jet exhaust smell.
Our family used to fly Iceland Air every other summer on those DC-8's they had to go visit our extended family back in Germany. Fly from Chicago ORD, with a layover in Iceland and then onto Luxembourg-Findel Airport. Then picked up by my mothers cousin and drive on over the border to the outskirts of Saarbrücken.
I remember as a kid how windswept it was at the airport in Iceland, the birds were just hovering in the air when they would fly, or rather glide. Occasionally we would fly with Lufthansa on a 747 to Frankfurt, we would then meet up with our grandmother who came to meet us and take the train back to Hannover. I remember Chicago ORD being so busy then and smelling that kerosene fuel. Iceland air often didn't use a gate back then, and you would walk on the tarmac between the DC-8 and terminal and loud jets were taxiing by. A few times on our return trip back to ORD the traffic got so backed up, that we would fly in circles over Lake Michigan until a slot opened up, usually in the evening. The sun setting over the city with Lake Michigan in front of it looked so beautiful, golden shimmer on the lake, good memories as a kid back then.
This aircraft was host to a wedding flying over the Rocky Mountains in 2008.
Gosh! That was hard to watch. I spent a lot of time on her going to YEV from YEG and back over the years. I hope the rumors are true.
Thanks, Alex!
See canadian north all the time. Don't know where you heard this though
I commend you sir, it was quite a windy day coming into Edmonton, luckily it was straight down the pipe rather than a crosswind! Glad you still got some great footage of the old gal.
It has that tearing sound similar to a fighter jet. I know why, it's because they both have low-bypass engines unlike the high-bypass engines of modern airliners.
Awesome video. Greetings from ORD.
Would you mind listing your top 5 favorite Canadian airports for spotting, operations, service, overall design and layout.
While I haven't fulfilled my dream to fly on one of these, I have had the opportunity of seeing GOPW a few times. Let's hope it keeps flying with a new owner!
Awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing!
Wonderful video man!
Great video of this classic 737👍👏
I love Canadian aviation, and I love that someone out there is going into depth on how interesting it is! Sad to see her go, she’ll be missed.
I think you should create a discord channel of some sort, about aviation
Sad to see these planes reaching the critically endangered zone
Good catch.

Looks like the first short flight was very early in the morning. What time did you have to leave Calgary to get to Edmonton in time for that footage? Did you drive? Long trip for 5 minutes of video!
One suggestion - please include the actual date in the "Flignt Information" section, rather than just the month. I know in that case you mentioned the May 7 date in the description but sometimes you only show the month.
I probably flew on that aircraft after it was inherited by Canadian Airlines following Pacific Western's takeover of CP Air in 1987. I worked for CP Air/Canadian from 1969 to 1994. Made a few daytrips from Calgary as far north as Resolute Bay just for fun. Since employee pass travel was standby you had to carefully check the loads on those flights as didn't want to be stranded at places like Cambridge Bay or Resolute with only 2 or 3 flights a week. On most of the combi flights I was on the cabin was arranged for 60 seats, with the overwing emergency exit just behind the cargo/passenger divider.
For a year or so, Canadian Airlines operated a 737 combi all the way from Edmonton (may have originated in Calgary, can't remember) to Montreal with stops at Yellowknife, Cambridge Bay, Resolute Bay and Iqaluit. I think it was twice a week. I took that flight once one weekend, although spent a night in Yellowknife to avoid having to leave Calgary so early. It left Edmonton around 8 AM and Yellowknife around 10 AM and arrived in Montreal about 10 PM. The whole trip about the same distance as to Europe. The first 3 sectors about 90 minutes each, then about 2 hrs Resolute-Iqaluit and 3 hrs Iqaluit-Montreal.
Always enjoy your ending music....thanks!
Nice catch
Designed back in the day when the engines were positioned properly for good CG. Unlike the MAX mistake ...
What was that Iron Plate adjacent to the Nose Wheel? I've seen it for the first time in my career. If someone can elaborate then I'll be thankful to him/her.
Thanks...
It's part of the gravel kit for unpaved runways
It should be put in the Clam Shell Hall of Fame. Just my opinion.......
🙄
I can not understand anything at all, they buy old planes, just like the ones they have, why not keep these ones? Nolinor bought 2 B732 da Taag...
The -200 series engines are so small, it looks a bit ridiculous
Not too sure but looks like it's equipped with gravel kit. So maybe that might also have something to do with engines !
these engines are the original style for the aircraft when it was designed. this allowed Boeing to make an aircraft lower to the ground to reduce the amount of ground servicing equipment needed to "turn" the aircraft. that combined with built in air stairs and gravel kit, is what allowed the -200 to stay in service for as long as it has.
kseifful is correct. Although, the engine was designed back in the 60's and are designated JT8D-17R by Pratt & Whitney. They are an old design with low-bypass fans on them. They can be considered 2nd generation turbofans engines. The CFM's you are used to seeing are 4th and 5th generation turbofans.
Also, the aircraft has had a gravel kit installed by Boeing. It consists of deflector for the gear (nose and mains) and the probes that extend from the bottom of the engine intakes spray bleed air out to destroy a vorticy that the intake creates on the ground, also there are extra landing lights installed in the outer flap fairings.
And the last modification is the cargo door in the forward fuselage. Most of the time these jets fly around set up 50/50 for cargo and passengers.
One time I flew on this jet and there was so much cargo that there was only a dozen seats installed in the back!
@@karan_IV The gravel kit doesn't affect the appearance of the engines,. Only addition to the engine is the bleed air nozzle at the bottom of the engine intake to blow debris away that might otherwise be ingested into the engines on gravel runways.
The 200's are such maintenance pigs now. 1 day of flying and 3 days of maintenance. I'll miss the Livery for sure...not the plane.
