This is easily one of the best episodes of the entire series, and also one of the most gut-wrenching. And the haunting beauty of Clinton Shorter's score during the Miller/Julie scene was invaluable for setting the emotional tone.
Oh, I know. I totally get that. Just didn't want Miller to die, but I understand why it happened that way and that it is what Miller wanted. As a viewer I'm just sad we don't get more of him.
The crew toasting Miller with the bottle of Ganymede gin owed him always gets to me no matter how many times I watch that scene. There's no doubt in my mind that Miller was protected and invited, being led to her by the bird in Julie's vision.
This is one of my top 5 episodes of #TheExpanse. .... it's so good and so sad.... The writers and authors of this show do such an amazing job! We really really care about these characters! We all cried.....
Your reaction to this is everything 😂 Exactly what I felt, moment for moment, on my first watch. Thanks for putting a smile on my face and feeling the feels with me So glad I’m going back over your reactions on my phone so I can leave comments
We're all here to vicariously experience your honest emotional reactions. On that note, job very well done this episode. Absolutely nothing here for you to apologize for as more than a few of us shed tears having seen the scene many times.
I was and am crying with you. Love Miller's and Julie's arc. Also if u ever get the chance to rewatch from the beginning you'll see millers up and down emotions and his thought process from the start and seeing the only spark in his life was the development with julie, it just made sense what happened in season 2 episode 5. And let me tell you you're going to cry sooo much harder! This hole series literally ages like fine wine, it just gets better with every watch. Ps my heart broke for Julies inner strength and how it finally broke and just wanted to go home. 😢 Amazing reaction as always!!!
Julie just wanting to go home made me so sad when I thought about it. She kinda was just a kid in the end who wanted to go home and see her family again. And Miller just wanted Julie. It's just...very sad all around. I'm sure it'll be even sadder on rewatch knowing it's coming!
Miller's character arc is amazing and came to a brilliant conclusion in this episode. Fortunately there is still plenty of great stuff still to come; next episode really hits the ground running, and the show never really lets up from here
In the end, after all of the Don Quixote references, and all the fans saying "Holden is Don Quixote", we finally get the big reveal. Is it Miller who is Don Quixote, a foolish old man in love with a beautiful young woman on a quest to meet the love he has never met. And compared to the original Don Quixote, Miller achieves his quest, tasting the kiss of his beloved, and riding along with her to share their sacrifice in the saving of all of Earth. Cry no more for Miller. His is a happy ending. This might help ease your pain: ruclips.net/video/c1UEHTMHkxM/видео.html

Carmen Young what I will say however is it’s easy to get viewers to cry for the death of a main character. Getting them to cry for unnamed one episode characters... now that’s a skill You’ll know what I mean before this season is over
Thank you for sharing this reaction with us. I get super weepy over fiction, too - almost moreso than real people, because fictional people live in my brain, rather than in the world around me. :)
Florence Faivre, really underrated actress and yes she is mainly a model. But she sold the idea of Julie so good and convincing, no wonder Miller fallen so hard for her. Thomas Jane always got Miller's vulnerability and determination out of his act, great actor. That kissing isnt scripted but both felt it was warranted so they did anyways and the editors agreed.
Only a show with wonderfully written characters can elicit such strong emotions, Carmen. Most of us cried watching it and still do rewatching it. If you think about it, Miller's death was a thing of beauty, sad but beautiful, not only in writing and acting but in purpose. As Dawes said to Miller in an earlier episode "Maybe you haven't lost everything yet, when you do, you'll know your way home. And it will welcome you." With Julie he finally found his way home and there was nothing else for him to accomplish in this life. With Julie his life found meaning through his death and he got all he ever wanted. “You belong with me” We as readers and viewers can not ask for a more full and complete character arc than this and Miller and Julie will stay forever in our collective mind and heart. And it won't be the last time the show will elicit strong emotions but always with the deepest respect of the story and characters, never without reason or for cheap effect. Keep invested ❤️
Hah, regarding almost killing someone off and then killing them off next episode. They kind of did that with Shed as well, but it took 2 episodes. Whenever they save someone from death I think "oh, they are dead next episode"

Definitely a milestone in the series. Take solace in the fact the show continues to be one of the best out there and there is a lot more to come, you'll enjoy the next 2 seasons ... a lot. Keep up the good work!
A sign of good storytelling is when it makes you feel. When it gives you a genuine emotional response. When Shep died, you may have been shocked but you weren't as connected to his character. Miller was so well built up, invested in that it really hits you as he sacrifices himself.
Oh 100%! They really get you to care about and understand and root for Miller before taking him away from you. It's great storytelling and I love that about it, but I also hate it, you know? lol
One thing I love about The Expanse is that every 'side' genuinely believes that they are doing the right thing; there are definitely people who are less inclined to trust other people and who set about doing what they think is right in a way which is more ruthless than necessary; but there's no outright 'bad guy'
I've seen this probably 30 or 40 times and I still tear up every time, so don't worry about crying at Miller's end. Episodes called Home. Remember Anderson Dawes told Miller way back that when he has lost everything he'll find his way home and he'd be welcomed. "You belong with me."
Just a note on terminology. It's not a ship's velocity or speed that is the problem here. It is acceleration, or rate of change of velocity. Acceleration, or deceleration is causing the g-forces.
Julie's infection progressed alot more slowly (over weeks) and 'naturally' compared to the radiation accelerated chambers of Eros population, which is why I think she could 'infect the protomolecule back'.
Yes, that is a factor and also another thing that I cannot get into yet for spoiler reasons. Once we know what the protomolecule really is and what it's purpose is, then it makes more sense why Julie "infected it back" like thy say.
The way this ended, is why The Expanse is THE best Sci-Fi show. This is genius story writing, and frickin' awesome acting. This is why I enjoy watching others, watch this show. Awesome reaction Carmen. Now for book 2. Next episode slows down just a little, as its the beginning of book 2, but the story just gets better and better.
So glad I found your channel. The Expanse is an incredible show. My favourite of all time. Looking forward to catching up on to your reactions as we wait for season 6.
This is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful hours of sci-fi television ever recorded. While it probably isn't much of a consolation now, Miller is pretty much exactly where he wanted to be.. with Julie :)
Oh Carmen. I hope the 2+ years between then and now (as well as that guest star in Seasons 3 & 4, helped ease the pain a bit. Still enjoying these videos… and missing The Expanse. Anyway, thanks for letting everyone go on this ride with you. And I hope all is well in “This Place”✌
Carmen Young I know, but for what it’s worth, Miller had a great character ark, fuelled by a wonderful performance by Thomas Jane, and he went out a hero.
Interesting. I can kinda see the scene toeing that line (with Miller calling her "kid" a lot). I liked the kiss, but it wasn't a necessity for me in the scene. If they had embraced instead I would have been equally satisfied I think. But, I'm definitely interested in seeing if my perspective changes at all once I've read the books.
From the moment the bomb failed Miller wasn't leaving Eros. He already knew that was where his life was going to end. First it was going to end destroying "the thing that ate Julie" later it was going to end to be with Julie so she wasn't alone. Miller's path has been locked for some time now.
Aw Carmen, I feel for u. I've watched this ep at least 50 times and I still tear up. The first time I watched it I was just as pissed off and sad. Hang in there.
Ahhhhhh hon, I hate to see you crying (as I type this thru tears). Miller saved the Earth, and I really think humanity, and he's with the one he loves. His efforts will not be forgotten. I think he's the best hero of any show I've ever seen.
It's not like Errinwright is wrong with the nukes, you can actually take what he's saying at face value there, he's in survival of the species mode. By the way, you're still in the tame bits, this show is savage.
I was more irritated at his "we don't have time to satisfy your curiosity" or whatever it was he said when the scientist voiced a very real and valid concern about the "bioweapon" that Errinwright *knew* better than anyone, was dangerous as fuck.
@@CarmenYoung I got that, kinda what I was referring to - there's an asteroid coming to wipe out billions of people, lets start a scientific investigation. Not like there's more than one option with what to do there.. TBH at that moment Errinwright is as in the dark as everybody else, is clearly worried.
11:02 Like "Souffle Girl" said on Doctor Who "The souffle isn't the souffle, the souffle is the recipe." Proto-Julie may be a copy, but Miller could not leave her to die, suffering and alone, again. Sometimes being a compassionate, loving human even to a memory more is important than just staying alive.
Oh yeah, I completely agree. I was just distressed at the time and upset that he was gonna die. I totally understood his reasoning though and expected it from him.
It's an emotional end for sure but as others have pointed out Miller ended up where he wanted to be in the end. I am looking forward to how you will like the second book.
A shortish essay I wrote on another reaction channel. A little longger than I intended but worth reading I hope. Good sci-fi is about people, not technology. Spiffy rocketships and powerful ray guns are neat but good sci-fi isn't about that. It's about how people react to technology. How these things affect us. How we interact with tech and how it changes us. How we interact with each other using these tools. Everything up to and including this ep exemplifies the point. How living in zero g affects the belters both physically and psycologically. How terraforming affects the Martians in the same manner. How overcrowding affects Earthers. This ep really nails the point. The fast and powerful warship Rosi, the immense arsenal of Earth, the potentially devastating nuke on a cart, none of them stopped Eros. What stopped it was just two people interacting. Two people being human. THAT'S good sci-fi.
Really had to hold myself back in the last videos to not even hint at the scenes ride episode by stating even something simple like, "keep your tissues handy" 😅 Sorry
Excellent reaction, I loved your passionate loathing of Errinwright, I definitely remember feeling the same when I saw the episode for the first time. This episode really doubled up on all the feels and tension, one of many times I wasn't sure whether to curse or praise the names of the writers
This episode is so amazing and you have a great reaction and analysis of the show! Try remember what Julie said "can't stop the work" this show reaches part of our souls we don't expect. Damn it, I wished he hadn't died either!
@@CarmenYoung yes it does, I've recently realized by watching reactions on RUclips that I'm not the only one who thinks this show is so amazing! I really envy your journey of discovery of watching The Expanse, but I can relive it through your reactions! Thank you for reacting to #TheExpanse!
the rocinante couldn't keep up with eros anymore -- no ship could -- much less dock with it to extract miller. he knew, then, that there was no way to rescue him, and that he literally had nothing to lose by taking off his helmet. and, like Jeminai said, he was exactly where he wanted to be.
Yeah, I know. I knew that Miller was going into it with that mindset, it's just I adored him so it was hard to watch, you know? Ultimately, I think he did the right thing for everyone involved. But damn, doesn't mean I enjoyed seeing it :(
You are officially a fully fledged Screaming Firehawk now in my opinion. This episode is a bit of a Red Wedding episode. You held up well. I felt for you at the beginning when you said you'd try not to cry. I've seen this episode countless times and I still tear up every time. Another reactor responded to it, by a 5 minute rant of abuse at her viewers for not warning her, and leaving her emotionally unprepared. Another on just sat there dumbstruck for a few minutes before saying she couldn't talk about the episode yet, and would give her feedback at the beginning of her next video. So you are not alone. Its a real gut punch, and leaves one happy, sad, angry, and despondant all at the same time.
Oh, so this is the Red Wedding of the Expanse verse, huh? I'm no longer a sweet summer child, now? That's good. Hopefully it's the most traumatic thing I have to witness on this show, but I'm still scared! It was definitely a gut punch, but I wanted to try and get my initial thoughts about it out. Mostly it was just *SAD*
@@CarmenYoung It was a real gut punch to us all... especially with him dodging death in 2x4, so many of us thought surely they won't kill such a popular character now, especially if one wasn't aware that it was the end of book one.
That was Miller's arc, he fell in love with Julie and finally found her; how could he leave her? He really didn't have anything else to go back to except to be a fifth wheel on the Rocinante.
Oh, I completely agree, but my selfish viewer heart loved Miller and wanted to see more of him. I know he was happy with how he ended up and I'm comforted by that. But I miss him and want more of him!
So Molly Bee, another RUclipsr, was also pretty broken up over this ep. She made a video explaining the story of Julie Mao and Joe Miller, and why things had to play out the way they did. ruclips.net/video/jF5Y8mNZJJI/видео.html You handled it better than Ms. Newcomplex, though. She was not happy with us #screamingfirehawks in that moment. The gravity meds, colloquially called 'the juice', are a mix of blood thinners, stimulants, and oxygen boosters to keep you functional under high G burn. You might have noticed the warning Alex got- too much of the chemical mix can displace your blood and wreck your renal system. Coming down from a high dose of chems is like a bad hangover- you're dehydrated, and basically everything your body needs to keep running has been flushed out of your system. The Roci has top-of-the-line Martian milspec drugs, which are not as hard on your body over the long term, but are very expensive. Many Belter ships rely on cheap drugs, so they avoid doing high-G maneuvers whenever possible. A little bit from the books: Arjun and Crisjen never say goodbye to each other. Their bond is so close, they don't worry about death breaking it.
So everyone knows it was Avasarala who took the reins in the command center. Earth was saved, and she's golden. It was a neat inverse of tropes to have a woman as the strong heroic figure who stays at the helm while sending the spouse to safety. And they did it perfectly organically, naturally. Dawes had told Miller: "When you have lost everything, you will find your way home. And it will welcome you." Miller had told Sematembe, "Julie is all I have." Then he lost her. But he found his way home, and home welcomed him.
For anyone who’s a fan of the Expanse and especially Miller, I would recommend that you watch Molly Bee’s video on him and Julie . It’s such a great video about them ruclips.net/video/jF5Y8mNZJJI/видео.html
I'm not saying Earth was wrong for their actions, but Errinwright knew information the others didn't and he withheld it even in the midst of a situation where 30 billion people could have died. That's what I was upset about it.
Can you please react to re zero when you're done with one of your other shows. Its soooo good. Its an anime and there's a dub version available for it too which is really good.
When the Protomolecule was sent billions of years ago, the most advanced life on Earth would have been far more primitive than the humans it encountered. Because of that, Julie was able in the end to exert a modicum of control to steer it towards Venus with Miller's help.
if it helps, Miller ended up exactly where he wanted to be.
He did. And it does help

I've seen this episode maybe 10 times and I still tear up at the end.
The only way to convince Julie to steer toward Venus was to keep his promise that she wouldn't be alone. If Miller leaves, Earth is destroyed.

This show is honestly just making me fall more and more in love with it by episode! It's so damn good! I'm glad you're enjoying me enjoying it lol
So glad I found your channel. The Expanse is an incredible show. My favourite of all time. Looking forward to catching up on to your reactions as we wait for season 6.
"Why are you doing this...?"
Oh...just to save all life on Earth,.and likely the entire Solar System.
If it helps, you weren't the only one crying!! Such a beautiful episode. Both Miller and Julie found their way home.
It does help
This is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful hours of sci-fi television ever recorded. While it probably isn't much of a consolation now, Miller is pretty much exactly where he wanted to be.. with Julie :)
It is a little consolation. It helped me feel better about it when I thought about it. Still sad, but I'm glad he ended up where he wanted.
Miller was my favourite character, out of a show with many awesome characters. This episode hit me like a sledgehammer.
He's just such a great character. I'm going to miss the hell out of him going forward.
Carmen Young I know, but for what it’s worth, Miller had a great character ark, fuelled by a wonderful performance by Thomas Jane, and he went out a hero.
Your crying made me cry. Great reaction.
Glad you enjoyed it! Sorry for making you cry!
Excellent reactions... you are not alone. We all felt this emotional with this episode. Hands down one of the best hours of Sci Fi ever made.
Also.. wish you had the full reactions on a Patreon.. i would absolutely subscribe.
Thank you! Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I am actually planning on making a Patreon very soon :)
I also loved that the kiss was an unscripted event. Both actors agreed to it and then decided to do it.
In the book It’s much more parental.
It's okay! It was a beautiful death, the music was perfect, and it makes me cry every time.
This is an episode, one of many, in this series that I look forward to Reactors reaching. And you didn't disappoint. *hugs*
Awww, well I'm glad you enjoyed it! And thanks! The hugs were definitely needed!
"Hopefully I don't cry in this one"... yeah we all knee that wasnt going to happen for this one😂
Enjoyed your reaction x
I was a hopeful fool! And I paid the price for it :D
Aw Carmen, I feel for u. I've watched this ep at least 50 times and I still tear up. The first time I watched it I was just as pissed off and sad. Hang in there.
Thanks so much! It's a very upsetting episode. I feel like whenever I rewatch it I'm still going to be upset, so I feel you.
Ahhhhhh hon, I hate to see you crying (as I type this thru tears). Miller saved the Earth, and I really think humanity, and he's with the one he loves. His efforts will not be forgotten. I think he's the best hero of any show I've ever seen.
He's a hero and I hope he's recognized as such. PUT HIM IN THE HISTORY BOOKS, DAMMIT! HE DESERVES IT!
For a show to elicit this kind of an emotional response they must be doing something right. Time to shift gears and ramp up the excitement.
Yeah, glad you brought the tissues.
Me too! They were definitely needed in that moment!
Yeah, I'm happy for Miller and sad for myself that I don't get more Miller storylines! Looking forward to what comes next :)
Velocity is harmless...its acceleration that kills you. Or a sudden stop at velocity.
A sudden stop is acceleration
@@sierra1513 I think they call that DEceleration.
Really had to hold myself back in the last videos to not even hint at the scenes ride episode by stating even something simple like, "keep your tissues handy" 😅 Sorry
Luckily I have tissues next to me all the time when watching stuff just in case!
Excellent reaction, I loved your passionate loathing of Errinwright, I definitely remember feeling the same when I saw the episode for the first time. This episode really doubled up on all the feels and tension, one of many times I wasn't sure whether to curse or praise the names of the writers
I cannot help but hate him whenever he opens his mouth! lol
@@CarmenYoung Just wait ‘till you experience his smirks - he truly is the king of those 😁
Fantastic reaction, keep up the great content. This show only gets better.
Thanks so much! Can't wait to see where they go next!
Oh sweet girl, a man is really looking forward to future videos about 'The Expanse' with you.
This episode is so amazing and you have a great reaction and analysis of the show! Try remember what Julie said "can't stop the work" this show reaches part of our souls we don't expect. Damn it, I wished he hadn't died either!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoy it :) This show definitely gets you right in the feels!
But damn, doesn't mean I enjoyed seeing it :(
@@CarmenYoung i totally get that. i loved him, too. i've always liked thomas jane, but in this role -- i just adored him.
@@CarmenYoung It was a real gut punch to us all... especially with him dodging death in 2x4, so many of us thought surely they won't kill such a popular character now, especially if one wasn't aware that it was the end of book one.
lol she's so mad at Errinwright.
Always. Literally always lol
Check out the song _Little Bird_ from "Man of La Mancha" (1972). Another Don Quixote connection.
didn't rossi nuke the stealth ship with proto-molecule ?
That was Miller's arc, he fell in love with Julie and finally found her; how could he leave her? He really didn't have anything else to go back to except to be a fifth wheel on the Rocinante.
Oh, I completely agree, but my selfish viewer heart loved Miller and wanted to see more of him. I know he was happy with how he ended up and I'm comforted by that. But I miss him and want more of him!
Lol, trying to ratinalize to handle your emotions, sweet!
So Molly Bee, another RUclipsr, was also pretty broken up over this ep. She made a video explaining the story of Julie Mao and Joe Miller, and why things had to play out the way they did.

You handled it better than Ms.
Yes! She's the best and I love her so much!
Top 10 most cruel switcheroos
😢
For anyone who’s a fan of the Expanse and especially Miller, I would recommend that you watch Molly Bee’s video on him and Julie . It’s such a great video about them ruclips.net/video/jF5Y8mNZJJI/видео.html
Julie didnt actually infect the proto molecule, it let her race to earth. I dont wanna spoil it but I will comment about it after u finish 3rd season
I mean, would you really not want to destroy the massive asteroid heading towards you if that was the only thing you knew about the situation?
Like, the choice is to shoot missiles at it or let 30 billion people die. The only alternative would also have 30 billion people die.
I'm not saying Earth was wrong for their actions, but Errinwright knew information the others didn't and he withheld it even in the midst of a situation where 30 billion people could have died. That's what I was upset about it.
Julie returned are you sure Miller won't?
THIS IS MY BIGGEST HOPE, OKAY?!
Omg I love this!
so true about the writers... Fucking rude. I get why you're so emotional when talking about the episode it is an awesome emotional experience.
I wished I could hit the like button more than once. .. just saying. ......
❤ Miller
Can you please react to re zero when you're done with one of your other shows. Its soooo good. Its an anime and there's a dub version available for it too which is really good.
Yeah, maybe? Haven't nailed any other shows down yet.
When the Protomolecule was sent billions of years ago, the most advanced life on Earth would have been far more primitive than the humans it encountered. Because of that, Julie was able in the end to exert a modicum of control to steer it towards Venus with Miller's help.
