I'm glad I stumbled upon this video. His book, True Style is fantastic.
Heinrich Heine the wonderful German poet some of whose works were put to music by Schubert in the form of Deutsche Lieder, Die schöne Müllerin for example. Lieder has as its accompaniment a pianist and a singer. This is a coalescence of four fine intellects and like truly grand works of the past, rarely is such a creation seen today.
What an absolute gem.

It is a ludicrous statement that he makes. Convictions or opinions are beside the point. The capitalists certainly have convictions, their convictions involve the bottom line; maximizing profit. Boyer rambles on with this nonsense and his followers gobble it up like he is a god.
@@BarkHillBrewsCafe You seem to misunderstand his use of the word "conviction". "Maximizing profit" is not precisely a "conviction", it's more an intention. One could certainly argue if capitalists have or not "convinctions" that transcend self-interest (but that could lead to an undesirable ideological field), but these "convictions" are certainly much more volatile than the ones required to build a cathedral of a very well crafted pair of shoes. His allusion refers to a deep commitment, related to a devotional state of mind that lasts the whole life of an individual. A profit oriented entrepreneur doesn't need this kind of religious faith on the right procedures, he changes the procedures everyday if this makes better business. The word Boyer could have used better, in my view, is "opinions", but that's another issue, and doesn't spoil his point.
@@marcoscorvit5626 this pseudo-intellectual attitude of many in the menswear community is unbelievable. I believe Boyer could have communicated his point much more clearly by talking about priorities. The priority of a craftsman is to make a high quality item that outlasts many generations, while on the other hand the priority of a capitalist is to maximize profit for the company at the expense of quality. And no, these priorities are not "opinions" both groups are absolutely convicted of the priorities they hold. Bruce could have said this but it would not have fit into the intellectual image he is trying to set for himself.
@@BarkHillBrewsCafe You are the only one who is talking about "priorities". He believes in "convictions". But in the end you kind of agree with him, even if you distort a bit of what he really said. So it seems you are more bothered about the image he tried to convey than about what he actually said, because you see him as a pseudo-intellectual. A pseudo-intellectual is a person who pretends to be cultured when he actually is not. I don't know if mr. Bruce really reads Heinrich Heine or have visited the Amiens cathedral, but I don't care and, honestly, those are not obscure cultural references, very far from that. Ok, let's avoid pseudo-intellectuals, but let's not be anti-intellectuals too. Honestly, what's wrong with knowing a bit of literature and architecture? Isn't a well crafted suite also a form of art in some sense? THAT seems to be at least part of his point...
@@marcoscorvit5626 yes, I believe you are grasping what I am getting at. I understand what Boyer was meaning to prove with his illustration. However, the point was very clear to begin with, thus his illustration served little purpose except as a show of his intellectual ego if you will. His reference to Heine seems quite obscure, and I find little reason for it than this.
So the craftsman isn't interested in making a profit? How is he/she not a capitalist?

This guy should look up the word irony in the dictionary. He seems to lament the loss of convictions and blames it on opinions meanwhile what the hell does he think he’s engaging in here?
I don't think he laments, rather he explains the difference between style writers or enthusiasts and craftsmans.

This is nonsense. Sure, his first point is obvious. Clearly mass-produced clothing lacks craftsmanship, but his rambling about "convictions or opinions" is ridiculous and has absolutely nothing to do with his original point. Also Boyer is assuming his audience is entirely heterosexual when he says "don't let your wife or girlfriend throw it away". I expected more tact from this man.

Your initial comment has one very nice point: it would be really nicer if he said "don't let your partner throw it away", instead of "wife or girlfriend". Had you sticked to it, I could even give you a "like". About the rest: it seems like you just didn't catch the reference about "convictions or opinions", when he mentions the Amiens Cathedral and Heinrich Heine: perhaps it's too much "erudite" or "philosophical" to you and you prefer to call it "rambling". Perhaps you did catch but didn't express your thoughts very well. But what most annoyed me is that your comment, short (and perhaps shallow, sorry to say) as it is, is cluttered of expressions like "nonsense", "obvious", "rambling", "ridiculous". That's quite rude and it sounds like you have something personal against this person. That's why I just redirected to you the sentence about "tact", although "civility" applies too.
