nothing quite beats an SVT, just an absolute classic sound. Really fits in anywhere. Unfortunately, the best sound I’ve ever heard from one of these was at deafening volumes, but man, what a sound.

They’re not too bad in a large venue or outdoors tbh. It is a bit painful when people crank them in small spaces though. In a glorious way.

Someone once compared a cranked SVT to sounding as heavy and violent as a bowling ball going through a wood chipper. Every night I pray to god that one day I will be able to experience that in person

I would LOVE to own a vintage SVT like this. I’ve never found any other bass head that sounds like a vintage SVT.

I enjoy the deep tones. I always tuned my drums to the lowest ‘E’ my bassist could give me. My kit sounded powerful and overwhelming.

cool vid, sir :). fwiw i bought a blackline version in 2005...... 1977? it still is roaring awayn at my practice space, gets played all the time by many people..... never has needed service yet...... i will service it totally when it fails but for jammin and havin fun it is solid now....... they are becoming more expensive of course and service w/ new tubes ban be 700$...... once u get it running it should last 15 years.... my opinion of course...... :) spend your money on a GOOD amp..... save up...if u play a POS you will never get any confidence....... an SVT and a Fender Twin Reverb is a good start

FWIW, your preferred settings on the SVT eq is mostly the same as my preferred settings on my V4B of the same, maybe slightly earlier era...
Great pieces of gear for the old soul/funk/r&b style my band plays... and of course the P-bass... the only bass you need, hehe

Hey - dyou know by any chace what (other than tubes wich wer swapped, caps which were changed and upper chassis which does not matter here) could be an issue with SVt sounding weak, like half volume?

At about a minute in, that boxy dark yellow plastic cap may be paper inside. Amp sounds great, so what do I know?

i know you have talked about that standby switch issue, what are your thought on this AMP-Saver from Mercury Magnetics? what are your thought on this concept? thank you for your knowledge!

As an alternate to "Lively Up Yourself", learn the bassline to "Quarter of a Man" by David Lindley (Jorge Calderon on bass, IIRC). Such a sparse, simple reggae-ish tune, but resonant and hypnotic....

I dont know, to me you cant really get the real SVT sound until the amp is running at 40-50% of the volume as I recall. That might upset the neighbors a few houses away. I haven't used a real one in over 30 years now but use the SVP all tube SVT preamp with a heavy old QSC 850 watt SS power amp so at least I get close that grindy SVT sound, granted the power tube section of the SVT also plays into the sound but you get what you can afford. At least its reliable and the entire rack unit is not quite as heavy as the genuine article. I have an Eden as a backup but never have needed it. I keep thinking "One of these days" but at 59 I probably dont need anything like the full SVT. Not very many people do, but what a sound!
If I ever do decide to take that plunge the first thing I will do is send it by you to have a gander and clean up any issues you see.

I tested it at full volume with a dummy load, but I couldn't do that to myself with speakers in my smallish space. Unless one lives in an arena, it's really not a great idea to crank it at home.

yeah. even if you have no neighbors, it's a danger to your own home to run one that loud! ask me how I know... lol...

It does sound good, but unless you have a couple of strong bodies to carry it , you can park it.

Maybe this amp takes guitars better than basses for some reason. Cool stuff though.

Ampeg (Linden, NJ. era) Square edge Blueline faceplates are 1969-1972… Square edge Blackline faceplates (this amp) are ‘73 & ‘74… Magnavox era Ampeg’s (1975-1979) have Black Round edge faceplates… MTI Japan era Ampeg’s (1980-‘84) are black face chassis’s with white square edge print and (very important to differentiate) square long face at the pre amp boxes… These amps are of poor quality as the components are not good… Not a quality amp… But! Do not confuse the MTI amp with the SLM (St. Louis Music) Skunkworks black face Limited Edition amps… These amps are killer and were made with new old stock Magnavox components as well as original Electric Windings transformers… The only difference from the original schematic is the lack of availability of 12DW7 pre amp tubes at that time… So SLM Skunkworks augmented the original schematic with 12AX7’s in the pre amp as they were available… The SLM Skunkworks heads were great modern (for the time) reliable amps… and they (and the rack mounted SVT 2 Non-Pro) were the last to used to original 6 in line 6550 power section… The Newer SLM, Loud Tech and whoever else makes Ampeg now used/use the later 3x3 6550 power section that was designed and used by SLM in the late 90’s in the VR and other “Vintage” reissue heads… nothing like the original power sections… the pre amp schematics are very different too… Cosmetically close, but nothing like the originals under the hood… :-)

These days my memory isn't good enough to accommodate a faceplate with no visible labeling :|
