The beginning of the show was one of the most awesome starts to a show ever, not only the rapid firing with the one ricochet but the look he gave the camera just as he slung cocked that Winchester. Funny how many of the western stars turned out to be the hard core conservative types, like Walter Brennan who was a John Bircher and also supported Goldwater. Interesting as well is how so many conservative types are found out t not be so conservative in private.

Met him in person. He was at Blockbuster grand opening, taking pictures & signing autographs. My husband is a great fan. We stood in line after waiting a couple of hours for Mr. Connors’ appearance. After an hour it was announced no more, Mr. Connors had to leave. People started leaving but my husband stood there, upset he didn’t get to meet his face actor. Mr. Connors looked over & saw my husband’s face. He motioned my husband over and said wait here, I’ll be right back. He took a quick break, came back and took pictures with my husband. Made his day.

In 1986, I had the opportunity to meet and interview Chuck Connors at his modest apartment in Los Angels for a new TV station we had in Sacramento. The "Chuckker" was great. Very polite, respective, funny, and he had great stories. I had always liked watching "The Rifleman" and "Branded" when I was growing up in Brooklyn. Learning that he was also from Brooklyn made me appreciate his shows even more.

I remember him in "Branded." Interestingly, it was a show about an innocent man who was accused of desertion as an officer.
The series was played during the Vietnam era when some soldiers were doing whatever to get discharged.
It was skipped over but he was in the Army during World War 2. He was a sergeant. He was a tank instructor.
Due to being a chain smoker he died at age 71 of lung cancer.

I met Chuck Connor and spent some time talking to him in the late 80's. I had a part time job working at a local quicky mart just down the hill from his part time home in Laguna Niguel, Ca. He had some kind of advisory job with the Orange County Sherriff Department. Sometimes on an early Sunday morning when it was slow he would come in to get a cup of coffee, and we would talk for 30 to 45 minutes about current events and politics. I never said I knew he was Chuck Connor's the Rifleman because I am sure he talked that one to death in his life. I just assumed he knew that I knew who he was.

Growing up I watched every episode of The Rifleman. The first gun I every purchased, at age eighteen, was a Winchester 30-30. As a kid in school, from Maine to Hawaii, kids often called me either Lucas or Mark. Your biographical sketch is the first time I've ever heard any dirt about Chuck Connors. If what you've said about his infidelity is true, it will make me feel less of the man. Chuck Connors certainly was a boyhood hero of mine. Thanks for doing this video. I hope you've well researched Chuck Connors and the life he led, on and off screen. Andy McKane, 3 December 2023, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.

Thanks for the video, it’s well done. I had heard about his infidelity and rough side previously. As a kid in the early 60’s I watched The Rifleman reruns every afternoon. I think what made that series unique was the overall theme was of respect and peace. It wasn’t a “shoot’em up” show. A moral lesson in every show. I had heard about his athletic ability and it’s impressive that he played both baseball and basketball professionally. Sad to hear he was reckless in his marriages. A stain on his character. I wonder what his kids thought of him?

Chuck Connors played his character on "The Rifleman" to perfection! He was what every man wanted to be, i.e.
Strong, but don't mess with him! In the early 50's, I remember Connors playing mostly secondary roles, as a "heavy"!
After his successful tenure on "The Rifleman", I believe his unusually tall stature, prevented him from acquiring new
parts & his "star status" receded quickly! Connors was successful in both acting & sports, as few others can say! R.I.P.!

Chuck was kind of a darker version of Roy Rogers. As mentioned in this video, Chuck thought that the rules didn’t really apply to him. In the case of Roy Rogers, Roy thought that they applied to everyone. I recall watching Johnny Crawford getting to work with Chuck on the Rifleman, and I was a bit envious because I had already told my parents I wanted to go to LA and audition for some TV shows. I figured if Micky Dolenz could do it, I could do it, and by the time I was in my teens, I realized that it was too late.

When I was seven, it was my favorite show. Years later I often laughed that a Rifleman episode was Luke reading the Bible , Mark in bed, but then the Micah rides up with a shotgun, and now for the next twenty minutes Lucas McCain is going to have to do nasty things to bad men. On the 21st minute, Mark goes back to sleep, Micah rides away and Lucas opens the Bible illuminated from the light of the Coal oil lamp and the flickering log flames. A perfect episode!!! I am 68 years old. 61 years of Lucas McCain.

He was also in the comedy movie Support Your Local Gunfighter with James Garner, Suzanne Pleshette and Harry Morgan. Though his part was not too long he played a gunfighter-for-hire who was to kill another gunfighter in the town of Purgatory. He was funny in his role that in a way poked fun at some gunfighter movies. Though he had his faults when it came to relationships with women he was still a good actor in everything he was in and that's how I will think of him.

Chuck Conners played such a good role as the rifleman, it was hard to find other roles that he could play. I watched a few of the
series Branded & it just didn't appeal to me as the rifleman did. Some actors put everything into a role & then aren't fit for any other role or roles. Sgt Bilko can only be played by Phil Silvers. Dirty Harry belongs to Clint Eastwood. The Twlight Zone belongs to Rod Serling. So as u can see these R my good examples of those past TV & movies we all once watched.

He was not a stern father in Old Yeller. He was a stranger looking for his dog. He was a good-hearted man in the picture. He played the opposite in the movie, Big Country, later on. I missed him by a day when I visited one of his favorite restaurants in Palm Springs in the late '80s. He was a favorite guest morning host for a Los Angeles rock station KLOS up until he died. Like many in Hollywood, when women throw themselves at you, it's hard to say no. No matter what side of the aisle you are on. Been like that since day one and up to today there. With domestic violence, growing up where he lived, and the time frame it was normal for him to see it happen around him. Good and bad behavior is learned from observation. Not condoning it since I saw it with my parents. Just saying. RIP Chuck, Johnny, and all who acted with them.

He was kind of the epitome of the dumb actor. One day on set the armorer was late so Connors attempted to load his truck rifle with blanks, but didn't know how. He kept trying to jam them down the barrel. The last of his "career" he was hired to play the bad guys. In Africa during the filming of Shaft on Africa the crew was invited to have dinner with embassy staff. One of the secretaries related how Connors was drunk and harassing the secretaries quite aggressively and refused to stop. Richard Roundtree intervened and Connors started on him, so Roundtree slugged him over a table knocking him out.

His best work was in the movie "Move Over Darling" with James Garner, Doris Day, Polly Bergen and the incomparable Thelma Ritter. He's the playboy who was shipwrecked with Doris Day for 4 years. She returns to find herself declared dead and her husband remarried.
Chuck is the playboy who returns to being, well, a playboy. However, he continues to pursue Doris. His performance was light, showing excellent comedic timing. Check it out.
The movie is a remake of "My Favorite Wife" , same premise, with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne.
