Only because he can afford it... for us, who heard him play this live, the notes came like arows straight to our hearts, such was the intensity every single note was played! Just unforgetable and also impossible to describe...

Do you know what the 1st ballade is about? Do you know who Edward is or what he has done? Did you read Herder? If no, maybe reserve judgment on the “right” tempo.
I was lucky enough to hear ABM play these pieces live... I tell you, he takes the tempo "too slow", as you say, because he can afford it! What we heard that evening was an unforgetable miracle as long as we live!
Heard the wrong note (I'm not a musician, but did) and feel lucky as ABM didn't stop his performance and throw all the record away! Let's hope he didn't be hurt too much by himself. I personally am so glad he could get wrong like every human being and accept it! ;)

Tempi are pretty slow. I prefer more passion when playing Brahms.
1st ballade is too slow; nice tone and articulation of chords -- making them sound more stark. but the pace drags. Rubinstein is better.
