People laugh at me when I say that this is my favorite movie. But it is. It's a rarified quality of filmmaking. It works on so many levels. On one hand, it's possible to enjoy it without knowing any of the references. Think about most movies that try to reference and parody pop culture: they're usually complete trash, with the references taking the place of storytelling while mocking their source materials. In SotD, Wright offers a really solid, and sometimes even emotionally powerful narrative while also weaving in hundreds of references (many more than this video identifies) to other films. That shows how much Wright and Pegg genuinely love the pop culture they reference in this film.

What's even better about the Charlton Heston reference is that Heston was one of the most famous supporters of guns' rights, exactly after the character took the gun. Love it.

Which is also the first zombie we see in Day of the Dead. So there's a parallel between being introduced to our major characters in both films, Shaun in Shaun of the Dead and the zombies in Day of the Dead
You should've mentioned why Coldplay were even in the film in the first place! They're all very good friends of Simon but, especially Chris. Simon is often referred to as the "fifth member of Coldplay" for that same reason :)
Thanks! Great references there! One thing though, 'The Infected' in 28 Days Later, are infected with the rage virus, they didn't die and come back as the undead, therefore, they are considered the infected, not zombies. The only difference is that the infected don't actually die and come back - they change while alive. Also, The Walking Dead has lots of other words for zombies - walkers, lame brains, dead ones, geek, biters, roamers etc lol
The dart board and pool cue attacks in the Winchester are a throwback reference to the Darts Night poster and "Killer" pool tournament advertised on the wall when Shaun is drowning his sorrows earlier in the film.
I don't think you can call crash zooms references, or say they're "now" part of Edgar's style, when he was doing them years earlier in the show that inspired Shaun (and years before that, in Dead Wright)
I agree that it could be considered a parody. But I really feel like this one was so much more than just a parody. I mean there's obvious moments that are clearly parody of something that came before. But parody to me seems to be more like making fun of something. And while Shaun of the Dead absolutely pokes fun at many zombie films and for sure definitely makes references to other zombie films especially Romero but I've always seen Shaun of the Dead as a standalone comedy about zombies that pays more homage to zombie films that came before. I think it's more than a parody. Other than that this video is awesome. Actually even including that the videos awesome but I digress, Edgar Wright's movies are just packed full of small little details like this and I freaking love it so thank you for pointing out even more that I'd never noticed myself
Jessica Hynes who played Simon Peggs Roommate Daisy in "Spaced" meets Shaun two times in the movie. Every time they meet, they talk like they had spent a lot time together in the past (like living together) but haven't seen themselfes for a while.
You missed a very obvious one, where Shaun is explaining his plan, one of goblin’s tracks “zombi” plays in the background, it also played in Dawn of the dead. Don’t get how you could miss that one
The scene in the WInchester where Ed attempts to comfort a distressed Shaun presages the entire film. Ed says to Shaun "We’ll have a Bloody Mary first thing, have a bite at the King’s Head, couple at the Little Princess, stagger back here. Bang! Back at the bar for shots.” Mary is the girl in the garden (in the garden, there's a girl), the King's Head is Shaun's stepfather, who is bitten in the neck, they rescue Liz, pretend to be zombies and then they're back at the bar for lots of shots.
In the movie, the characters fight zombies. This is a subtle nod to the fact that this is a zombie movie.

Great video, but the tongue clicking noise between facts is horrendous
Benjamin Penaym omg I know right
Charlton Heston was also the president of the NRA in the 2000s.
I was drinking a Pepsi when I first saw this movie, drove a Honda to the theater, and slept in a Tempurpedic mattress that morning.
The dart board and pool cue attacks in the Winchester are a throwback reference to the Darts Night poster and "Killer" pool tournament advertised on the wall when Shaun is drowning his sorrows earlier in the film.
You completely missed the dawn of the dead music that was used when shaun and Ed were planning their rescue/escape.
I don't think you can call crash zooms references, or say they're "now" part of Edgar's style, when he was doing them years earlier in the show that inspired Shaun (and years before that, in Dead Wright)
You missed the second song (after the Dawn of the Dead intro) which is Ghost Town, by the Specials.
That's not a movie reference though.
@@mistertee5000 Re-read the description, where it says, "Here's every music, movie, tv show, and celebrity reference..."
9:29 the 28 Days Later reference boosted the movie reference count TO TWENTY F**KING EIGHT!
You forgot Don't Stop Me Now by Queen
Kernkraft 400 is the band name, zombie nation is the song.
Turns out they were right. Zombie nation is the band name. Mandela effect in full force there.
@@87MrBEAR I'm with you. Was totally confident that he got it wrong .
Jessica Hynes who played Simon Peggs Roommate Daisy in "Spaced" meets Shaun two times in the movie. Every time they meet, they talk like they had spent a lot time together in the past (like living together) but haven't seen themselfes for a while.
Happy 15th anniversary of Shaun of the Dead!
Holy crap has it been that long?! Now i feel OLD xD still my favourite movie after all these years.
Aaron Watson one of the all time greys for sure
That tires reference made me smile so much always loved that character.
The Universal logo at the start of the movie is a shot for shot reference to the actual logo made by Universal studios. Who knew??
I can’t see Peter Serafenowicz without hearing his Neil Morrisey impression
Edgar Wright was one of my dad's best friends in school
How are they now?
You missed a very obvious one, where Shaun is explaining his plan, one of goblin’s tracks “zombi” plays in the background, it also played in Dawn of the dead. Don’t get how you could miss that one
What about the "why did he bite you" line which is a reference to resident evil 2 intro when the trucker asks "why'd he bite me?"
