The Three Kingdoms - OverSimplified: • Three Kingdoms - OverS...
I wanted to learn about the history of Eastern Cultures and OverSimplified was already recommended to me ^^ It was a very entertaining video about the Three Kingdoms period of China. I really like History and Culture in general but we learn so little about those regions in school. I'm happy to see many people love to learn about History too! ^^

It is a very interesting history with interesting warriors, lords and etc. Dynasty Warriors 6 was my introduction to Three Kingdoms and i like it although i know all little bit more of Sengoku Jidai than Three Kingdoms but it's still one of my favourite histories
I am more of mythology lover but it is tightly intertwined with history so I love both!
@@Torineesan 100% agree
@@Torineesan While history sure is at the start tough, you can privately watch the youtube gamer Serious Trivia's Let's Talk Lore series about events and persons from the Three Kingdoms (while using game assets from Total War Three Kingdoms and more!), (Edit 1:) or perhaps enjoy his current series about the Monkey King Sun Wukong (no relation to Sun Jian and family) all thanks to the new game Black Myth!
A reason that the historic period is awesome is because of the exploits and divine status certain men from the period, such as the God of War Guan Yu, strategist wizards Zhuge Liang, and scheming widowloving mastermind regent Cao Cao, among many others that inspired folktales, novels, and games based on such traumatic events from more than 1800 years ago!
Edit 2: A longer watchalong from the youtuber GatesOfKilikien would also help much about late antiquity Chinese history and geography!
The reason why that early part of the video said that it might be mythical probably refers to the period of Chinese mythology known as the age of 3 Sovereigns and 5 Emperors. These 8 are deities of Chinese yore who each lived for thousands of years and had godly powers(hence the laser eyes). Following this age is the arguably first dynasty of China, the Xia which up until today has no definitive evidence pointing to its existence. That's why they might be 'mythical'.
If I could I would be using the "note" emoji. Super interesting stuff!
yeah the Xia dynasty or anything even earlier has only documented in the record but almost no relics existed anymore (or destroyed, i mean it;s thousands years ago it's pretty normal), hence why people only refer them as mythical period. It existed but no physical evidences
Oooooh! So we have some documentation but no relics. I wonder if it was on purpose 🤔
@@Torineesan the documentation are from previous dynasties as well such as Zhou or Qin(they recorded that there was dynaties come before them), even those dynasty are like 3000 years ago, it's logical that there are no more relics existed
@@GreenC The big problem with identifying Xia era artifact is that so far people have only been able to decipher the writings on oracle bones, which were dated to the Shang dynasty that follows Xia. There are plenty of artifacts or relics dated older than the Shang, but since most of those lack any inscription , or inscriptions that have been fully deciphered to precisely confirm they are from Xia era.
But you see what's the problem with that pretty strict definition of what's factual and what's mythical right? By that standard many cultures around the world would be classified as purely mythical, if they don't have any survivable and decipherable writing. And that logic certainly isn't applied evenly everywhere, so it really is kind of unfair to the Xia.
"Can you imagine a game of thrones but about the Chinese Civil War?"
People who know Chinese history: "Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down ???"
Touché
So we could have many games of thrones but Chinese? 👀
@Torineesan Those are rookie numbers, we could have many game of thrones just about the three kingdoms 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Meanwhile romans was just chilling during all of this chaos in China)
It's okay, they got some problems later down the line. Was China chilling while the Romans were struggling? That would be a funny irony.
@@Torineesan They were. I mean, the funniest thing is reading about Roman and Chinese description of each other at the time. Both basically fangasming over one another and praise each other til death, even though no direct contact had been made between the two.
I just imagine both sides fsngirling over the other. Very funny image XD
@Torineesan TBH Romans view China not as a Great Empire but as a great future rival with whom they would definitely fight. Whole Chinese yeah, they definitely view romans as equals
@@Torineesan when Han China got a corrupt greedy absent father of an emperor (ranked top 2 worst emperor of China), Rome was having an emperor cosplaying and killing as a gladiator (he's gonna get chokeslammed by his palace wrestler bribed by his imperial bodyguard praetors)
the military during that time wore azure, and the rebels wore yellow
sky would simply means the world
both chinese and japanese use the heaven as a point of reference
under the heaven/sky is the mortal world, above the heaven/sky is the immortal world
remember "Throughout Heaven and Earth, I Alone Am The Honored One"?
throughout heaven and earth is "heaven above heaven below"
That explains a lot. Completely forgot about that part of Japanese Mythology.
1:29 "i must have more information" the exact reason why it's possibly mythological..... the irony lol
2:21 too put simply time war and diplomacy, almost all transitions from one dynasty too another, was the results of war and rebellion. Only a few were peaceful transitions of power.
5:30 you nailed it on the head the Chinese successfully exterminated all religions in ancient China, most fleed too India and thats the pre-origins of Buddha. They weren't able to defeat superstitions and the "Mandate of Heaven" is when the Government get TOO corrupt(they ignore corrupt if it works as if its natural in government) than the heavens will send natural disasters until the people rebel. Look it up you already seem too know your stuff lol shockingly.... 0.o
So there's actually two versions of the Three Kingdoms story. _Records of the Three Kingdoms_ is the actual historical information that took place in this time period, whereas _Romance of the Three Kingdoms_ is the romanticized version which is the one most people are familiar with.
The Romanticized version is the one that gets adapted into everything from TV shows, Mangaka/Manhwa/Manhua, Live Acttion Movies, and Video games.. the most well-known being _Dynasty Warriors,_ which is a hack and slash action game set in the time period, and you can choose to follow all the stories of the 3 Kingdoms and even a 4th campaign for how the war ends. And the amount of characters you can play as is insane with each wielding insane weapons...
Waot! This spunds super fun! Is it available on steam?! I want to check out that game!
@@Torineesan I don't know if it is on Steam, but there are multiple versions of Dynasty Warriors.
I usually recommend 7 for story or 8 for gameplay, but a lot of people also recommend 3 purely because of the *hilariously bad dubbing* which you can find on RUclips.
@@ShahroozSmithThere also the Strategy Simulation Games which titles are "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" made by the same company as Dynasty Warriors.
@@Torineesan i only know that you can play Dynasty Warriors on Playstation and Xbox. Also there's also a mobile game of Dynasty Warriors too, ik not many or some people talk about it but i just thought why not tell you about it
@@Torineesan Dynasty warriors is available on steam, and I'd recommend Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends if you want to check one out as 9 is not particularly fun. 8 is good, too, but the campaign has more hypothetical routes and is aimed towards people more familiar with the original story.
Alternatively, wait with bated breath for Dynasty Warriors: Origins in 2025.
I mostly remember the history because i've been playing dynasty warriors a lot LOL
Three Kingdoms does have multiple TV series adaptations
Can you recommend any of them? 👀
@@Torineesan The 1994 CCTV Romance of the Three Kingdoms is pretty good, it's one of the more faithful adaptations of the novel and it is also fully available on RUclips for free with English subtitles
@@Torineesan i watched the 2010 version on youtube and enjoyed it.
Later I heard that there is 1994 version with stronger cast and better costumes and sets, but didn’t watch it myself.
Aha! Time to dive into this beauty!
@@georgesmith6218 It is older, so generally costumes look less "flashy", and battle scenes look less over the top due to lack of special effects, but in terms of a more accurate presentation, then the 1994 version is the gold standard. 2010 one is more like a cartoon version in comparison, nothing wrong with that, but I mean, the difference between Romeo and Juliet and anime Romeo and Juliet basically.
PLZ watch more of his Videos !!! :DDDDD
That's the plan my friend!
Liu Bei was descended of Liu Bang, the King of Hanzhong as well as from the first emperor of the Han Dynasty, so you could say he is apart of the royalty family tree
The amount of names in this video meade me dizzy 😵
@@Torineesan it's understandable, i'm chinese and idk how to pronounce half of the names in Three Kingdoms
@@Junweitrustnobody1403 Basically meaning you are probably not that great at the Chinese language then...............
@@LibeliumDragonfly and you do? Not act like you're smart about it whether or not you have learned it or not. You can learn bit by bit to understand history
can you watch more oversimplified? like the punic wars
Unfortunately, I think OS videos would be claimed for Adrev (this one was, and my dispute was refused) ^^" but maybe in the future I can come back to it
Oversimplified lets goooooooo.
Also the reactions you do are adorable. Keep doing what you do
Thank you very much ^^ and yes, it was recommended to me and I knew some videos of the channel, it is an entertaining channel for sure!
Great video this my first time seeing you. If you’d like more history I’d recommend DJ peach cobbler.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I will check out DJ peach cobbler as I do like history!
2 more to 1k subs!

China likes to pretend their history is longer and more epic than it actually is.
it legit is longer though smh
@@lamarishere2225 The ooga booga neolithics weren't empire builders.
@@arfbark3924 Other civilizations may have a longer history, but they either didn’t keep as many written historical records of their own history as China did (like Achaemenid Persia or India) or were culturally replaced, at least significantly shifted, by Arabs or Turks.(like Egypt and Mesopotania ). You can notice China is still over 90% Han people today while this video was talking about Han empire’s history. That’s like Romans, as an ethnic group, survived till the modern day.
@@gavinwang7886 Ooh buddy, do I have some news for you.
@@arfbark3924 You actually don't, you just think you do.
