The girl is real, remember that when we got to the apartment on a mission, she hands Zero a VHS and says she got it from a guy with a ridiculous hairstyle (who is V). Do you think V would talk to someone who only exists in Zero's mind?
I don't think the girl doesn't exist. It's shown that she can interact with various objects: cleaning Zero's room, bringing the tape, cooking a choking hazard, etc. Tragedy and Comedy seem have the ability to manipulate time and space, so ereasing someone from existence shouldn't cause too much trouble.
The masked guys are probably hallucinations and personifications of his inner moral balance. But the game tells us often that he doesn't show guilt or remorse from killing.
@@r3dsnow757 I don't think that's entirely true... Tragedy and Comedy are definitely a more bizarre aspect of this game, and its narrative, seeing as they mainly interact with Zero through dreams or other scenarios where he can't interact with them... But I think writing them off as hallucinations is a mistake. Here's why. They most definitely have a physical presence. It's barely even referenced, but in the exchange where they prompt you to choose between life or death while you stand surrounded by the Police. One of the main officers seems frightened by Tragedy's appearance. "What the fuck? Get back!!" After this line, Zero, Tragedy, and Comedy all enter into the weird cosmos-time-stop dimension. Not only are they acknowledged by a police officer, whom we can assume to be more reliable than Zero, at least, but they also kill the ENTIRE SQUADRON surrounding you if you choose to live. This is referenced by your therapist in the phone call after your mission. "An entire fucking police squadron is dead. FOR NOTHING!" Zero certainly didn't kill them. At least not the last group. Chronos is a powerful drug, but I don't remember any suggestions that it could Old-Testament people out of existence. Symbolically, these two definitely represent the dying struggle for some form of morality within Zero's mind. But I want to re-iterate; I think writing them off as purely that, as purely symbolic, is a mistake. What do you think?
I posted a comment showing my two cents about the guys in masks below, but here's what I've been able to piece together about the girl. Prepare for a couple of nerd-theories, because, as you stated, she is very hard to figure out. I've come to the conclusion that she is definitely real, mainly due to three "anchors" that this idea of mine is based off of... 1. Her interactions with V: V is real, we know that much since Zero's therapist begrudgingly acknowledges him after he kills Electrohead in the club mission (side note: this is an outcome obtained by talking with Electrohead for too long) he says that your organization and V "may be at odds." Since V is real, we can then work to the conclusion that the girl is real. She mentions that "some weird guy" asked her to make sure that you get V's snuff-tape of your neighbors' torture and execution. He wouldn't just leave the tape in the hallway, it would get yoinked by someone curious. 2. Her interactions with Tragedy and Comedy (the guys in masks): My comment below lays out why I believe these chaps to indeed be real, so I'll just move directly to the point; The girl has seen them. She mentions that her dad's "friends" came by on the night that you come home drunk. A couple nights later, when she shows you the view of the city, she mentions that she "doesn't want the men in masks to come back," implying that her dad's "friends may in fact be Tragedy and Comedy. Not only this, but a post-credits sequence reveals them to be tormenting her. 3.Your apartment at the end of the game: I know, this is the main basis for the argument that the girl was never real to begin with! But, there are a couple details from this sequence that lead me to believe that this sequence works to prove the girl's existence rather than disprove it. This game is very polished, every detail is purposeful and thought out, down to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in the opening sequence where a light in an apartment window flickers on after Zero kills the first henchman. My point with this little tangent is that this game doesn't skimp out on even the smallest details, and your apartment at the end of the game looks nothing like it did at the beginning. (before the girl enters the picture) - One of your dumbbells has inexplicably moved from the right corner of your room to near the middle - Your couch certainly looked cluttered and tattered before, but it certainly wasn't torn anywhere near to the degree that it is now! - Finally, the most noticable- a note has been left in your apartment. The police even mention that your apartment was broken in to, so it isn't entirely unreasonable to suggest that someone could've re-cluttered it. They also mention that there was a homicide next door, which they are there to investigate. It is implied that the man who was murdered may have been your psychiatrist, but that makes little to no sense, given that you murdered him in his office prior to returning to your apartment complex. Even if your neighbor was your psychiatrist all along, why and how would the police already know that he had been murdered? And why would they search his apartment, of all places, first, given how he was murdered in his office? Well... this comment turned out to be much longer than I anticipated... What do you think?
@@yaboichipsahoy2760 I had similar thoughts one point 1 and 2, but what about the dream sequences? It made me question the existence of the girl and the symbolism of the two dinosaur toys. In the first dream sequence, a boy is playing catch with a silhouette of a girl (looks like the same little girl with pig tails). in a later version of the dream sequence, the girl in the dream turns into the toy leviathan. before the dream, you find the girl outside your apartment carrying a toy. she asks to be let into your apartment because her toy lights up when in close proximity to leviathan, so it must be in your apartment. you let her in, and sure enought you find the toy in your couch (in the final dream sequence you pick up the toy from the home, and must have kept it). in the final dream sequence, the boy is playing with the toy leviathan (that represents the girl?), you come in and kill the scientist, the boy hides under the bed, you use/destroy the machine, pick up the toy and leave. I thought the two toys that belong together represented the two children you killed. but it doesn't add up as the girl is looking for the toy that represents her and the boy did not die. any thoughts?
@@mydude457 Yeahhh... this aspect of the story generated about the same amount of headache as a philosophy class... Umm... Let me start with this; I don't think the soldier from Zero's nightmares is him. I think it's the headhunter. For one, Fifteen is shown interacting with this soldier, and he has no clue who you are when you confront him and the headhunter in the Chinatown mission. Furthermore, Fifteen and the Headhunter seem to share a history, since they talk about "making them pay" for "what they did to us, what they made us do, etc." Not only that, but when you confront the Headhunter, before her second phase begins, if you ask her who she is, she'll say, "You don't recognize the uniform?" She thinks that her face/uniform would be familiar to you. She also sports the same hairstyle as the soldier from Zero's dreams. This may not be the case, however, because even though the hairstyle is the same, the hair color is different. The soldier's hair is black, like Zero's, while the Headhunter's hair is brown. There's also the issue of Zero's age. By the time that the story takes place, he is 22 (shown in his dossier at the story's conclusion). At the beginning of the final flashback, text flashes that says, "Seven years ago," meaning that at the time of the flashback, Zero would've been fifteen. I have a hard time seeing New Mecca military hiring child soldiers, but at the same time, I have a harder time picturing a fifteen year-old playing with a plastic "Leviathan" toy like the child in the flashback was. So, in conclusion, I believe that the soldier from the flashbacks is the Headhunter. However, this creates a bunch of logistical issues. How did Leviathan end up in Zero's apartment? If Zero was the child, how did he hear what the soldier said to his superiors via walkie-talkie? How was he able to see the soldier meeting with Fifteen? Like I said, massive headache. (Maybe we'll get clarification in a sequel? If that happens, of course.)
Zero's story ark is memorable, I like how they explained the reasons why Null project was terminated due to massacre children, and how the secret of the Chronos serum was created to give a Null solder's super natural abilities, the game's plot show some similarity to Red Skull and the HYDRA Project that created their Serum. Fifteen and Zero are both like Captain America(U.S. Agent) and the winter soldier.
Are you just assuming the side effect of the drug was intentional or do you have something to back that up? Since i don't recall anything that suggested it being anything more than unintended.
Think about it. If the military invested time, money, and resources into a program it would be of utmost importance to have a fail safe mechanism built into the drug. The dependency of the drug ensures that the test subjects will return (for more doses), or will ensure their death upon capture or escape attempts. The only way to control an unpredictable creature (a human) is to predict what they will do with their free will.

@@trydodis690 that could easily be precognition coming up with multiple possible outcomes and picking the one that works. When he dies that could just be the outcome if he takes that path, so he knows not to until he thinks of one where he makes it to the end alive.
Danster 549 I considered that but then wouldn’t he then know the best thing to say for every conversation especially in the Mr V kissyface scene? If he had precognition he wouldn’t be asking questions and he wouldn’t be dying.
Also if he had precognition this means you could theoretically do things like talk to electro head but never have that conversation or know the outcome to every mission and knowing what chronos is before he’s supposed to which would just completely fuck up the plot.
It is referenced in the game that chronos gives some precognition but I don’t believe it goes to any significant extent other than insane reflexes.
Also it is referenced by headhunter (the null you fight) that she’s killed you before. That’s not because her precognition is not working, this would mean it’s not precognition, it’s because she is killing you but you just aren’t dying.
@@trydodis690 You could definitely be right, however I think the seen where he's with V the precognition could be so accurate it could predict possible conversations and perhaps even fights (like the fight with Headhunter). I still could be completely wrong though
So can anyone explain wtf comedy and tragedy are all about? Are they real?
Zeros inner conflict of emotions. Since he feels no sympathy for his endless slaughter. His emotions are unbalanced and literally haunt him. Ig.

I like a story on fifteen and snow, this game had a main focus on zero
I wasn't surprised about it but man I was really hoping the little girl was real. Zero's big brother-esque relationship with her was really wholesome and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Thank you for making this a 4 minute or so video! Quick and concise!
Great concise synopsis! Thanks; it definitely helped me get a better grasp of the insanity I just finished.
1:07 not true. Headhunter (the other NULL working with Fifteen whom you fight near the end of the game) is also a Gamma NULL and was part of their squad as we see in the end of the game
False.
its the boss that explodes once it dies, isn't it?
@@ashwindsouza606 yeah
The game tells us some people still see the people they killed and they stay with them. The little girl never existed and zero killed kids and in the bunker couldn’t do it the little girl instead of tormenting helped him
The girl is real, remember that when we got to the apartment on a mission, she hands Zero a VHS and says she got it from a guy with a ridiculous hairstyle (who is V).

Can someone explain the girl and the guys in the masks thats all i dont get thanks
Get back!!"
After this line, Zero, Tragedy, and Comedy all enter into the weird cosmos-time-stop dimension.
FOR NOTHING!"
Zero certainly didn't kill them.
1. Her interactions with V: V is real, we know that much since Zero's therapist begrudgingly acknowledges him after he kills Electrohead in the club mission (side note: this is an outcome obtained by talking with Electrohead for too long)
he says that your organization and V "may be at odds."
Since V is real, we can then work to the conclusion that the girl is real.
(before the girl enters the picture)
- One of your dumbbells has inexplicably moved from the right corner of your room to near the middle
- Your couch certainly looked cluttered and tattered before, but it certainly wasn't torn anywhere near to the degree that it is now!
Furthermore, Fifteen and the Headhunter seem to share a history, since they talk about "making them pay" for "what they did to us, what they made us do, etc."
Not only that, but when you confront the Headhunter, before her second phase begins, if you ask her who she is, she'll say, "You don't recognize the uniform?" She thinks that her face/uniform would be familiar to you.
1:05 wasn't headhunter (the woman in the boss fight at the end) a gamma aswell?
If the masked men aren't real, then why does the policeman at the chinatown standoff say "Wh-what the fuck? Get back, now!" when one of them appears?

Katana Zero had to get a sequel
Why was Zero killing children in particular?
war and drugs bro
I think them dying from lack of chronos wasnt intencional
Think about it. If the military invested time, money, and resources into a program it would be of utmost importance to have a fail safe mechanism built into the drug. The dependency of the drug ensures that the test subjects will return (for more doses), or will ensure their death upon capture or escape attempts. The only way to control an unpredictable creature (a human) is to predict what they will do with their free will.
why did zero and 15 kill children , them being 15 and 17 , why would they do that

Cool game and very cool atmosphere, but vague stories are weak stories, imo.
Do you prefer to have less obscure lore and more exposition?
@@TheInhumanOne yes. I feel like some games stories use vagueness to cover up the fact that they are not fully fleshed. Same with Hollow Knight story. It's like someone came up with a very interesting story but they couldn't finish it. That's my opinion.
That’s understandable! I’m torn between those two types of story telling. Honestly, I HATE uncertainty, so I love to have a complete factual knowledge of the game I’m playing, the anime I’m watching, etc. However, it’s ironic because sometimes, that VERY SAME uncertainty makes me want to revisit that world and search for answers I may never find.
@@TheInhumanOne yeah I can imagine. But also it's my preference, I'm sure some other people do like stories like this
@@arab6745 difference between this and hollow knight though is that hollow knight is not story centric like katana zero, so imo it doesn't suffer from a "vague " story and doesn't need more detail. It's more about the gameplay, exploration, world, etc. The story/lore just exists to create more depth/intrigue around the world. If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out mossbag because the hollow knight lore is very interesting imo.
