Back then we had one of these beautiful 2 player cocktail tables with Missile Command. Loved the big trackball. Good times...
That game had some big balls
Just got one in! Pretty excited about refurbishing it. Love the cones for the fire buttons too.⚡️
I honestly liked this handheld MUCH more than I thought I would, despite the d-pad issues. You start to get used to it after a while, you have to use the edges of the d-pad, placing your thumb firmly in the center can cause some stickiness issues. I also have a VS with around 20 carts. My family honestly plays more couch co-op with the VS than we do with our PS5, and the games play incredible with our 8bitdo Bluetooth arcade sticks, which also aren't very expensive. I absolutely love these Blaze products, they're incredibly fun and also cheap to collect for. I used to collect music CD's and Vinyl and the Evercade feels a lot like the video game equivalent to that, and the price of the carts are around the same as those CD's that I used to love to get. My son and I love cracking open the new Evercade games when they arrive in the mail, reading through the awesome full color manuals, then look forward to popping the the carts in and playing them on a Friday night. Finding the unlockable games when placing certain combinations of carts into the VS at the same time are also incredibly fun to play around with and discover.
War Birds, Solaris and Fatal Run are what sold me on the Atari Super Pocket, I just love those games.
Lynx games in general sold me! Such an under appreciated library! As for the d-pad, it should have been good from the get-go.
Thanks for the tip! I really like my super pocket, but the only blemishes are the D-pad weirdness and my old eyes having trouble seeing the (very nice) screen. I think your idea of not pressing the middle of the D-pad is a big help. Now I just need to give in and get glasses...
I have the Evercade VS system, I really like it. It's fun to collect the games
Yeah, interested in trying some new cartridges!
For $60 AND evercade comparability?
Thats really not bad at all. Much better value than many of those My Arcade games
Thanks for this Greg! This could absolutely become a major distraction for me and the boys. Bringing back major handheld options for me. And there’s lots of these that I’ve yet to have the chance to play.
Tons of handhelds out there. The Evercade and Atari connection drew me to this one.
Thanks for this review! I've been interested in getting this, but the bit about the controls gives me pause. Hopefully the d-pad just requires some "breaking in".
Yeah, let's hope!
Have a happy holidays Greg's Game Room
Thank you!
I love Centipede and Millipede. Save Mary is a awesome game..
The 500+ games claim is misleading. A lot of carts are no longer being produced and are hard to get hold of or really expensive. At any point there is probably 6 or so carts in limited production run.
Looks pretty cool, but the issue with diagonals on the dpad is concerning.
Yeah, it makes the games virtually unplayable.
Warbirds is an underrated game. It’s a 3d polygon flight sim/dogfight game. Was really fun with 2 players and the comLynx cable. It’s a game made 5-6years too early
Yeah, I'd never heard of Warbirds before, but it's one of my favorites on the super pocket.
Great review Greg!
Thanks!
Lack of analog control often screws the diagonal.. I feel this was one of the main sore thumbs that popped its head up during development, and they put it on the back burner to essentially get cold and overlooked-But as you mention in the video-It drastically hurts the game play, and therefore I feel destroyed half of its potential sales… “Just make something that looks and PLAYS good” has been the only real qualifiers for a great console for over 40 years, but STILL companies screw those parts up.. Why even bother ya know? Products like this ride on nostalgia and the fun that we had playing the actual games that actually worked the way they were supposed to,so if you come out with “the latest greatest tiny console” it better damn well work at least the way it should in regards to responsiveness and utilizing the simple technology that’s been around for almost 100 years..(analog contacts and registering..)🙄
Nice Video Pinball is way better than people say like ET..well maybe not the best example but still
It's not the best, but I spent hours playing it!
Cool little handheld!
It actually feels pretty solid to me.
I see you did not get the woodgrain edition.
Dang, I might actually have to get one of these....
There’s a couple different models too, I naturally choose the Atari one…
I really like my Super Pocket (despite the D-pad weirdness), but can someone else who has one tell me if Adventure is significantly harder on this than the original cartridge is? I generally kick butt at Adventure (I'd better, after playing it for 45 years!), but on the Atari Super Pocket I get absolutely crushed! I don't get it. Typically I'm getting eaten by multiple dragons simultaneously within 15 seconds of starting the game. It's bizarre and super frustrating.
Yeah, they need to sort out that D-pad. Ridiculous that they clearly never tested how Yar's Revenge plays on this. I've tested playing Yar's Revenge on my Taito Super Pocket and it suffers from the same control problems. If you can overlook the obvious shortcomings then it's still worth picking up if you don't already have a Super Pocket. I for one don't need multiple editions of the same hardware. If you've got a modern console then Atari 50 Expanded Edition is a better option, especially on Nintendo Switch. Nice video. Thanks :-)
This has a good selection of games not included in that.
@KeenRetroGames Yes, a dozen or so but not really worth the asking price if you've got the full Atari 50 release. If the D-Pad had been fixed, I may have "upgraded" to the Atari Super Pocket but hey ho, here were are :-)
@ the d pad is fine for most games. It is a shame that Yars and Aquaventure are not among them.
@KeenRetroGames Same on the Taito Super Pocket playing Yars Revenge.
Very intriguing, I definitely could use a new, easy to use handheld.
It can be great if the controls were better.
Ah man now I need this! 😂
It’s not a bad deal…
Yeah i like video pinball so much better than midnight magic
Are the save slots per game or 6 total
6 per game.
i know this could upset people BUT i think ninja golf is an awful game
no, i'm done with evercade.
