Thank you, Karl, for that very concise and well-explained introduction to Premiere Productions. I've been using Avid Media Composer for over twenty years and am just learning Premiere now. At first glance, Premiere Production is basically Premiere's attempt to replicate Avid's versatility in sharing projects. I just wish Premiere would have used better terminology. A "project" in Avid is now a "production" in Premiere, whereas a "bin" in Avid is now a "project" in Premiere. Yikes! At least a "folder" is still a folder.

Thank you, Karl. I'm following along and doing the setup for a 7 year project. Looking forward to seeing how this all unfolds.

Karl, this is very helpful. Let me ask you a question (no clue if you read these) but if I've already created a long form project (first feature YAY!) and started cutting scenes, is it a bad idea to switch it all over to a *Productions*?

How deep into it are you? It is possible to convert a standalone project into a Production (see episode 10.) I do recommend to stop cutting for a full day, and follow the steps in the Ep 10 video exactly, importing the old project into the new production, move items out of the copy into new projects in the production, and keeping all projects open until you finish the process. Please watch that video first.

Wow Karl… I’m several months late finding your channel but have wobbled my way through cutting a feature doc on an M1 16/2tb. I don’t recommend it. Ha.
The project bloat is nuts and several months ago separated media into its own project to reduce size. Of course many versions later and copies of clips generated, plus AEfx Dynamic Link files, laybacks, etc… it’s fat again.
Productions would’ve saved lots of hairs on my head. The project is delivered but I’m interested in converting to productions so it’s archived properly. Would ep 10 be a good one to review?

Yes! It’s a method to convert a large single project into a Production. We always recommend starting with a Production, because it’s easier to build out as you go. Converting a project is a manual process, and depending how far into editing you are, there can still be some great gains in performance. But conversion can take a day or two away from editing, so keep that in mind.
