      That's very true. The way this car manages to look so fresh and stylish even after almost 2 decades is simply amazing. I really love the bread of Alfas coming down from the Brera concept of the early 2000s (Brera, Spyder, 159). In a way they look better than the new Giulia family imho.

      I bought one last year, in here Finland. Subframe rust but I was surprised how clean it was at bottom. Red paint is chipping but it is issue with all cars this era since some enviromental restrictions on chemicals used in paints.
      Edit: In video it says gearbox is usually reliable. Yeah the M32's legendary status is not known from its reliability... Altought I guess I'm lucky to have working one so far.

    My 2007 159 1.9jDTM ran like a dream and I put over 100,000 miles on it - I swapped it for a 2009 Ti 1.9 jDTM that developed a leaking oil filter seal, needed ball joint/wishbone replacement, power steering pump replacement, power steering reservioir replacement, collapsed water pump + cam belt + pulley, siezed tie rod ends + the gearbox bearings went - all within 10 months of buying it.
    You win some; you lose some. I still love Alfas though.

    5 years on only a window motor gave up on freezing temps.
    Front tire wear higher than competitions since the engine weight (2.4 jtdm) but also steering is tuned well so it has to work more on the front axel to avoid understeering.
    Every garage/inspection is amazed by the condition.
    Absolute pleasure coming after a few boring Nissans and Passats :D

    Bought my 159 1.9jtdm with 44.000km and I've enjoyed it whole 220.000km from my side and still counting! The car has 264.000km behind it and it just loves to take the corners more aggressively ... oh what a ride!
    Oil change every 20-30.000 km and it has almost null oil consumption(ca 0.5L on 30.000km).
    We had to change 6-th gear bearings at around 220.000km which I don't take as a bad thing.
    Tire-wear: yes, the front tires get chewed up faster than the rear and under an angle but they hold for 30.000km which is a normal tire lifetime*.
    I wouldn't suggest buying one if you have a uneven bumpy roads, you will scratch the bottom as it is very low at the front axle.
    Wouldn't suggest it as well if you have a lot of snow... there it might be a little clumsy.
    There is a lot of bad rumors about Alfas but my has proven it different. It is a very comfortable car for long distances and it is reliable!
    One who says different had a bad luck buying it from previous careless owner or he definitely doesn't take a good care of it.
    The 159 is a devious lady, you have to be very careful with her when she is cold, but when on temperature she is a lovable beast!

    • @OffGridInvestor
      @OffGridInvestor 4 года назад +3

      So you're talking about previous careless owners and you're only changing the oil every 20-30 thousand kilometers??!!! Most cars of this age are supposed to be 15 thousand kilometers and the video says to do it every 10 thousand..... I've done 10 thousand on all the cars I own regardless of what the manual says.

      I think they get a bad rep because their predecessors were aweful. The 156 had engine problems, electric problems as well as massive rust issues (At least here in the north of europe). I used to own one, and when it was 7 years old I'd experienced the following: Head gasket failure, belt retainer failure, wiper motor failure, fuel indicator failure, MAF failure, headlight failure (one side kept killing the running lights), airbag failure, exhaust header cracked, front upper suspension failure and significant rust on the bottom below the seats. I do remember someone at the dealership telling me that the 'new' 159 was going to be better though. Never dared find out. They're cheap now though, so if I can find a Q4 somewhere I might be willing to try.

    Great car ... my uncle used to have one and we loved it!
    One helpful input: if you buy a petrol version, check if the oil thermometer works. Changing it is pesky because the sensor sits down in the oil tray and the whole half of the tray needs to be opened. And don't be fooled by the indicator showing movement -- frequent errors are that it first moves up, but then drops back to 0. You need a longer drive to check it is properly working.

    Love my 159 sportwagon. Plenty you can do yourself but don't try changing front brake pads as pins will be seized. Do Change the oil very often and it will go for miles and super fun to drive when turbo kicks in and don't slow down too much in the corners for more fun. This car is a head turner in town.

    The most beautiful and reliable car. I bought new 2010 AR159 2.2 JTS and running 'more than 12 years clocking 301,000km.
    You need change the clutch every 120,000km and I have changed twice. There are other issue like engine mounting.
    Other than that it is a piece of art.

    • @DashCamSerbia
      @DashCamSerbia 9 месяцев назад +1

      Wow! I have the same one (2010 2.2 JTS 159 saloon manual). Bought it about 3 months ago.
      Mine has done 175.000 km and clutch is good. But I don't know if it was ever replaced, because it was a comony car belonging to a bank, so it was mostly driven longer jurnies. My engine mounts are good as well, I think. The chain too.
      I replaced the intake variator solenoid valve, and that short radiator hose from the top of engine. I will see if I could clean the intake valves in the next few months, but that is about it that the engine needed. Of course, did the regular engine svice and also the gearbox oil and added additional 0.5L of oil through the top plug, to protect the 6th gear bearing.

    Rusty shocks and springs are also a problem - they sometimes even break because of corrosion . And Another thing is important: Many have moisture problems - check under the floor carpet if there is moisture or even water. When it rains, the rain sometimes runs down the door and finds its way to the driver or passenger floor. And the last problem: A weird noise coming from the AC - the noise may get louder the more you accelerate - if the AC is still working you have to maintain the AC with new gas than the problem should be gone!

I've heard "all the horror stories" about Alfas and I'm frankly not ready to face such issues. I also had my doubts on... "how do these people drive these cars that are so unreliable?"... on the other hand, I did hear from a few people that the car treats you like you treat IT, and that they never had any (major) issues and they love their cars. It's either this or a w203 2.7 CDI. The 320d's in the price range (with comparable options) are rubbish so that leaves me with these. Volvo S40? What's everyone's opinion, please? Thx again.

      The 2.4JTDm is a very good engine but you have to remove the Swirl Flaps indeed. But it's quite a job to do this!

    My 159 is well built and refined. Great for cruising but not great around town. You can’t run these cars on a shoestring. Any problems that crop up get fixed ASAP as they are maintenance hungry and things can snowball, same as any other premium car.

    After owning my 159 2.4jtdm Q4 for 60K km and 4 years i can point out the following:
    1. Propshaft bearings
    You cannot swap these, the service costs ~1600€ new shaft costs ~3000€ new. The bearing is welded in in the factory so it needs specialised shop to rebuild.
    2. Very reliable car but!
    Many small things need fixing which might get annoying if you don't work on your own car and rely on a shop to do it. Prepare to change front suspecion components annually, boot gas struts, brake related service items, interior things like window regulator, rear wiper motor etc. Easy DIY but be prepared. And the Damm elastic alternator belt keeps making noice, challenging to change and needs chaning every year on my car...
    3. Build quality
    If you like solid build quality this car might not be for you. Everything feels cheap and plasticky, nothing really works as smoothly as on say, German cars like: Rain senror, ESP, Folding mirrors, wipers, AC. They all work but if you are used to German quality it all feels cheap.
    4. Not very impressed with the driving
    On slow speeds the car feels very heavy, heavy steering and the diesel spools up slowly. Gearbox feels notchy (6speed manual) and drivetrain clunks when you let off the clutch quickly. The car drives beautifully in higher speeds and this is great! but the road noise is high imo.
    The car over all impresses me with it's stylish design and reliability. Starts everytime (even in -40celcius) and runs with no issues.

    One of the best cars I ever owned, the 159 2.4 JTDM. Now I go with Stelvio 2.2 Diesel, even greater car... Pity, that Alfa discontinued the 5C Diesel, but 2.2 is a good successor, anyway.

      Monstroterratum hi there, just bought a black metallic, beige leather interior 2.4JTDM with only 50000 miles, I just love this car...elegant,sporty, fast and that smooth Diesel engine with the q-tronic, and all for 10 grand (euros). The best it’s that unique design with that unmistakable face and sexy rear, forget all Audi, Merc and BMW...all look the same, booooooring!!

      @@rolandrumpff6695 any problems with it yet? i'm thinking of buying a car if i work hard enough this summer and i'm mainly choosing between an Audi a3, either first gen with a 1.8t or 1.9tdi, or second gen with a 1.9tdi or 2.0fsi/tfsi and obviously an alfa 159, i'm mainly looking at a 2.4 as i hear it's the most reliable (it's got plenty of power too). i'd prefer a more powerful car but if it would have a lot of problems i'd probably choose reliabilty w/ a tune rather than a bit more power.
      what do you think?

    Hello Every one
    I have Alfa 156 1999 model 2.0 lit Twinspark SeleSpeed.
    I got a problem and need a solution from those who are experienced please:
    Diagnostic :
    When I drive in a very slow speed specially on road humps; there is a red light icon (like a sprayer) lights up when this lights up, the gear dismantles from Engine , instantly the car doesn’t move front or back, no fuel acceleration however the engine keeps running, but the car doesn’t move UNLESS I SWITCH OFF the engine and turn it (ON) again, then the car moves on. However while driving on long distance the car runs excellent and doesn’t make any problem. The engine temperature shows normal too.
    Please help to let me know the problem. Thanks for every one.

    Why you didn't mention that the 6speed manual gearbox (M32 gearbox from opel) is not that great ?!
    You even said the opposite, that 6 speed automatic is not as reliable, which is not true. EVEN IF IT IS NOT, it certainly is better than the 6speed manual offered here.... you can find a lot of examples of gearbox noise after 150.000km or less...
    6 speed manual from 147/156 is a "spaceship" for this gearbox here

    I just wonder about the hydraulic fluid for the power steering. I bought my 159 from Italy with red fluid in it, when one of the hydro pipes developed a crack and it had to be changed, my shop recomended a fluid (in accordance with the manual) that was also red... So why do you recommend green? BTW its 2.4 jtdm, with 214 tkm on the clock and this was the only breakdown :-) ...in 1,5 years of my ownership

    • @differentcarreview-dcr
      @differentcarreview-dcr  5 лет назад

      it's your car so you can put whatever you want in it, but:-On the early 159 (up to which date is not known) the wrong GI/E 'red' fluid was put in the steering reservoir at the factory.
      -Stickers under the bonnet though usually indicate the correct GI/R ('green') fluid.
      -The handbook started off saying the 'red' fluid but changed later to the 'green' fluid.
      -There is also an issue with the reservoir on the early cars - this has been modified on later cars and a revised reservoir should be fitted when changing the fluid at the same time.
      Why the 'green' fluid? It flows better within the system, particularly in cold weather.
      however at higher mileage changing the fluid can cause problems: in some cases the steering racks started to leak the moment they changed the fluid to the green one

    • @DashCamSerbia
      @DashCamSerbia 2 года назад

      It is because the problemm is that green fluid is thinner then the red fluid, and if you have old seals in your steering rack, it can leak with grean fluid. While since the red one is thicker, it would not leak. Of course, if your seals are good, gren one is better since it provides better lubrication. You can find more info on stillrunningstrong /car-specs-problems/alfa-romeo/alfa-romeo-159/ (not my site).

    Parts availability is becoming a problem. Some parts are no longer in production (by any manufacturer), sine 2-3 years ago. Out of 4 engine mounts for 2.2 JTS, only the bottom short one is available, and only one bushing for the bottom long one. The top (main) engine and transmision mounts are not available anywhere (in the world).
