The problem is that GFN is already diluted into near meaningless. You get fireworks all the time for about 10 days from 31 Oct, albeit with a peak on Nov 5. You also have fireworks on and off for about two months, with every Tom, Dick and Harry letting them off whenever they feel like it, plus the foreign celebrations like Diwali. Two month of fireworks is an absolute pain, it should be restricted by law to a couple of dates, including 5 Nov and only those dates.

    • @LondonFriendsWalks

Rubbish the reason Guy Fawkes night is dying out is because of the competition with Diwali. My neighbourhood has firework’s going off left right and centre. Halloween is also dying out I had one child knock my door and I had no sweeties so I nipped out and got two boxes of celebrations. Not one kid came round after that. Guy Fawkes night also has a religious element, and some consider the loss of religious knowledge in recent years to that.

@@paulgodden4974 I know but Guy Fawkes was about blowing up Parliment and Guy Fawkes and his mates were hung disemboweled and cut into quarters, where as Diwali celebrates the power of light over darkness. Living close to a stately home that has the largest fireworks display in Britain, growing up the council would wait for all of us scamps to collect wood for weeks from our area for our very own bonfire then about every few years would come and steal all that wood for the council run bonfire . They would not do it every year and would rotate their choice of bonfire from all over our village so if it was stolen you would go to another . They have just announced that this year there will not be a bonfire or effigy allowed , this is another nail in the country I grew up in. I hate these people.

Andyhulme2274: Halloween is not American; it's the name given to a much older Celtic festival, Samhain, by the Christian church. Samhain was a fire festival that lasted throughout the darkest time of the year. It began at the first full moon AFTER the first frosts of winter, and was a time when the British Celts remembered and honoured their ancestors. Some of these traditions are still with us in the lighting of bonfires (believed to be a "boon" or boost for the dying sun) and Remembrance Sunday. What we associate now with Halloween, dressing up and carving pumpkins, is all based on this much older tradition and really has nothing to do with the Americans, except that they saw an opportunity to commercialise the Eve of All Hallows. You can read more about Samhain if you're interested, online.

Though surely the government should approve of the Guy Fawkes night celebrations. They commemorate a group that was dissatisfied with the government getting caught before causing any damage... and then not enjoying their last few days alive very much.
However, despite successfully thwarting of the Catholic menace, only 44 years later the political situation had deteriorated anyway... to a point when the country was ungovernable.

Ahh yes. In Australia when I was a kid there was Empire Day (or Cracker Night) to celebrate the British Commonwealth. The night was celebrated with burning of bonfires and setting off large amounts of fireworks by locals. Naturally it was banned some years ago after the usual media campaign about safety etc. Now the only fireworks 'allowed' are organised displays by the government as part of New Years Eve. But of course none of this has stopped huge amounts of fireworks set off during Eid celebrations - all illegally of course. Naturally the police have never taken action to stop it despite the usual blustering. And certainly never appear to have charged the suppliers of these fireworks. Don't let them do the same to Britain. Even if you let off only one firework - just to demonstrate contempt for "them" and their censorius ways.
