Every time I see a 380 takeoff, I’m struck by how deceivingly slow it seems when they reach rotation speed. Also the acceleration for an aircraft approaching 500 tons is pretty amazing.
Most of the pilots I've spoken to all agree it has become a lousy job. Extremely stressful with paychecks and pension funds that gets cut for no reason. They all agree it's a funny and exotic life when you're young since you basically visit the world for free, but after a while it gets old. Also, you are at constant risk of losing your job. Being a pilot in the '70ies and '80ies was another story, nowadays probably you're just a glorified bus driver. Hats to these fine men anyway, thanks to them milions of people each day are able to travel safely to their destinations.
@@andreaforcella1094 There are worse jobs to be had. Nothing to complain about and it's fun if you are interested in planes. All jobs get old. Salary is huge. Personally I wouldn't want to be a pilot, but I don't think it's right to talk down like that saying they are a bus-driver.
@@andreaforcella1094 Some of your points aren't true. Being a pilot isn't being a "glorified bus driver" today. Saw one of these behemoths take off at Frankfurt airport a few years ago. And I’ve seen a C5 take off too. It’s insane watching it lumber down the runway and takeoff. It never looks like it’s going fast enough because of how big it is but eventually the nose rises and up it goes.
The first time I flew that route was in 1959 as a passenger on a BOAC Comet 4. We couldn't land at Kuala Lumpur, so we had to go to Singapore. The flight time was 19 hrs 10 minutes, but we had about six stops on the way so the journey time was longer. We flew at 480 kts and 40,000 ft. I've done Australia to the UK and return via Singapore/KL several times on an A380. I prefer the A380 🙂

Back in the 90s several times me and my sister were allowed to visit the pilot and see inside the cockpit whilst flying it was an amazing experience, this was a common practise back in the early 90s when I was a child , you would just ask the flight attendant if the children could visit the pilot and providing it was good day you would normally be allowed. The tower cleared them to line up and wait on runway 09R. That means they get clearance to line up on the runway and get ready for departure. Obviously they cannot line up on their own regard, but in this case they were cleared to do so. Normally in super heavy aircraft like these you get a line up clearance prior to a takeoff clearance since they take a bit more time to get set up on the runway centerline and for the pilots to do their departure checklists.
