This is my favorite allied plane in IL 2. Glad to see you back in it and that your enjoying it. P.S. IL2 has this cool feature. On the map screen the text bar on the right has a specifications tab. It has a lot of useful info for when learning/transitioning. Like engine settings, timers, glideslope speeds etc. Along with some notes about airframe peculiarities.
I tried VR for IL-2 and surprisingly did not like it... back to track ir. Did you guys modify the setup? Maybe that's what I need to do... I see a step-by-step page to change to openxr and neck safer.
@@erickent3557 I didnt modify anything. I just hooked up the relatively cheap Quest 2 to my relatively weak rig and all of a suddenly I was actually inside a fully 3d cockpit as if Im flying a real plane. The immersion level is off the charts! I tried it on DCS but my rig is weak for vr in that game so the images were not so great. Gonna definitely upgrade.
@@erickent3557 OpenXR is a better experience IMHO. Just smoother and when the fps goes down it isn't as jarring/noticeable. With the XRToolKit all the setup tweaks are much better integrated.
@@CasmoTV Same, but I also want them to finally finish the 262 after all those years... Nick Grey also hinted at a possible F6F in a past interview, but then I want to have an A6M as well for the turn and burn galore, I mean we need it anyway ;)
First thing I do in IL-2 is get rid of the on screen stuff, showing the RPM and Throttle %. Another thing is the clouds has always been good on IL-2 and when you go through the clouds you will get water droplets on the canopy. Back in the early 2000's, I was at the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH and I got talking to some old WW2 pilots around the P-38. They told me they use to call a P-38 pilot a Popeye. They said their forearms would be get big like Popeye, because of how strong the controls were to use, lol.
I try to remove the one screen stuff as well but for learning the airplane I recommend you keep it on till your comfortable with the sounds and feeling of certain engine speeds. Plus sometimes you need feedback their your key inputs are properly mapped
Getting Vietnam Flashbacks of the old Il-2 series where the forest just consisted of several layered transparent textures that you couldn't see when you were flying Viggen style... out of a sudden you'd just end up being dead 'cos you crashed into the forest without even knowing XD
I set this up on my Honeycomb Bravo again last night. Nice arm workout. Also, you should map something to speed up and slow down time. You can go up to 8x speed for those travel sections of campaigns and missions.
the ai aaa seems to have gotten better than it used to be. a better tactic than pulling up sharply in an area defended by aaa is to stay low after your attack run, use terrain masking if possible and extend away from the threat at full power before climbing. it is harder for them to shoot you if you stay low because of low altitude obstructions, trees, buildings, etc
@@CasmoTV I got hit hard twice by flak in the Normandy campaign before I switched tactics. Once I started staying low and extending, I noticed I saw far less flak coming my way, particularly with other planes in the area. The ai will switch to easier targets and then you can dive in for a strafing run to eliminate the threat while it’s focused on someone else. Good hunting
If you want to help other IL2 New owners out lol I have this Normandy but I can not figure out how to set up MAP all the engine controls? They make it so hard. Not like DCS. I was in this same plane yesterday and got so lol fed up I quite playing it.

And I forgot, turn the instrument lights on in US planes.
Trust me
Interesting.
I remember playing IL-2 Forgotten Battles/1946 back in the day. Good stuff.
Glad to see some love for IL-2!
I’d love on it more if the ME was more user friendly and the dedicated server was working properly.
@@CasmoTV oh for sure there are room for improvements :)
I just got vr and tried one of my favorite the P38 in Il2. What a difference vr makes! I couldnt believe it!
IL2 is gorgeous in VR. Different game

Really want this for DCS. I's one of the few Warbirds I'd fly very often.
I want this and a Corsair.
Corsair is coming Soon™, but haven't head any news for a while. Should be fun on Marianas.

I really love the P-38 in IL2.
Same
Warbirds are a thing of beauty. I usually skip the big jets in order to fly one of these.

The 38 is such a beautiful plane
Remember: The trees are collideable.

In the old IL-2 days, my goto plane was the LA-5FN dogfight beast :)
I love the P38, I fly it almost every time.
I flew a ton of IL-2, it tought me to fly a plane prober. Was a Falcon4.0 sim guy and my first takeoff in IL-2, I took off like an F-16....kaboom :)
nice & clean emergency situation breakdown & reaction ⚠️✅👍🏼👆🏼
Gotta Love Those Merlin Sounds!
Yes, the P-38 is a beaut. I played a lot of IL-2 at the end of last year, but took a break. Now I am jonesing to get back to the fork-tailed devil.
Anyone who might not know, make sure to map Air Brake to something. The p-38 will lose elevator authority on a dive without it engaged.

Yeah I have that mapped
@@CasmoTV Those WWI planes are Slooooooow lol
Yeah I spend a lot of time in FC fast forwarding
Maneuvering flaps are generally 10 degrees down

Yeah I can attest to it suddenly being very Fing good lately.

Contemplating getting IL-2 for flying bombers, looks like it would be a good time until Microprose gets the B-17 games out.
I haven’t been impressed with anything the “new microprose” has shown off.

Yeah the key mapping is a shit show compared to DCS.
DCS burning everybody out with their bs lol
I like them both. 🤷🏻♂️ but sometimes you need a break.

not anymore, im even Laster
