When the train starts (shortly at the start) and slows down (right at the end) it sounds like the br481 in berlin
Greetings from Saarbrücken! 😇
Very nice Kiepe traction motors. The Class 455 and Class 321 “Renatus” has the Kiepe traction motors. And yes these trams do act like tram-trains similar to the Class 398 and Class 399 are Tram-Trains with impressive speed.
Modern day Kiepe is pretty boring sounding (such as in the 455 retrofits). Much rather have the classic era Kiepe.
Common misconception. The motors are still original on both 455s and 321s, but they had AC drives fitted to them to replace the old DC camshaft system on 455s and the Thyristor controlled (if I recall correctly) on 321s.
I do know that Sheffield Supertram have Class 399 Citylink Tram-Train and TfW who are getting the Class 398 Citylink to operate in the Cardiff area from next year.
@@Andrewjg_89 ok?
@@NSE465 I will miss the Class 321 "Renatus".
The VF drive sounds (not) similar to the Vienna U-Bahn Type V train.
These motors remind me of those sexy Class 331's from CAF that Northern operate.
A cross-border tram-train? What an interesting little system.
Cross border trams aren't special between France and Germany
These kind of trams are sound like Budapest's Ikarus 435T trolleybuses
Do you know German or French?
I don't understand French. I can understand a tiny bit of German to the point where I can sort of understand what people are saying if it is simple, but I have no clue on speaking German. Interestingly I can usually understand Dutch. Dutch is effectively just English with a strong accent and loads of German words thrown in, but I still have no clue on speaking Dutch. The other language that I can understand bits of is Slavic.
It sounds like its programmed very similar to a class 465 metro cammel after it changes audiable pitch. And indeed, trams of croydon back in the day aren't the same as they used to be.
It is a Kiepe VF drive. The same as Croydon Cologne tram, Dusseldorf tram, Bremen tram, Vienna U6 train, Ivano Frankivsk trolleybus. The 465/2/9 and 466 trains have a GEC VF drive, the same that is used on the 1996 trains. The 465/0/1 had a brush traction (possibly an early ABB) vf drive. The Porto suburban train has a similar VF drive. The 465/0/1 has had their VF drives replaces with Hitachi/Omron VF drive.
@@benolifts yeah they are different I'm saying they sound very similar for a bit
@@bb-3653 I guess there are only so many ways that you can pulse a thyristor make in the days when the thyristor technology had a low limit on how fast it could be pulsed when at high current (the highest current is when the train is moving slowing, but is using full acceleration to increase its speed). The PWM and Pattern modes on any drive set to the same pulsing frequency will sound similar, but there are certain sounds that are distinctive to a particular model of VF drive.
For example.....
Holec has no PWM mode (and the pattern mode sounds epic at startup)
Hitachi/Omron hold onto PWM mode for longer by increasing its pulsing frequency before switching to pattern mode. Old and New Hitachi do the same thing, just at different frequencies.
Mitsubishi (and other Asian drives) have a distinctive startup PWM frequency swoop. It also holds onto PWM mode for longer which causes a downwards tone in sound on PWM mode.
AnsaldoBreda also has the distinctive startup swoop (but faster) and then quickly changes to pattern mode and has rapidly changing patterns, and even does this on newer drivers at higher frequencies (when other modern drives tend not to do this so distinctively)
Old Siemens is very rare and crazy. It has the startup swoop but does it by playing notes and makes the train sound like a trumpet.
New Siemens can have oscillating carrier frequency (but not always enabled). It has a loud anti rollback full power sound for half a second when it starts up just before the train starts moving.
Bombardier has a distinctive sound. 2000hz PWM followed by 2 patterns.
Alstom is boring sounding at about 4000hz PWM with no distinctive patterns
Old GEC has a classic sound with PWM mode only lasting less than 2 seconds then very distinctive patterns.
Old ABB was similar sounding to GEC but PWM mode is longer, and it has a startup PWM swoop which is kind of non smooth like it is rapidly going through loads of notes.
Modern ABB is boring and has random staticy oscillating PWM frequency (the most boring sound a VF can made)
Old Kiepe has a very distinctive sound.
New Kiepe is very boring sounding.
@@benolifts @@benolifts aha that makes sense then, thanks alot for the descriptive behind the vf drives etc, Alot of newer traction sounds shit. Part of me wants to know whether it's still possible to programme the system in a more interesting style without making the function of the train poor? I have no idea.
That being said, I really dislike aventra/ pre alstom/bombadier stock, i wish they had similar audibility to electrostars or movia/ s stock systems. Aventras just sound plain awful, and the motors make almost no sound above 40 mph at all, their just too quiet to enjoy, which actually killed most of my interest in them whatsoever. Class 700s are okay (just okay with regards to sound) Class 331s and 745s are likely one of the only modern UK emus with distinct and nice traction motor sounds imo, esspecially the 331s. In Europe most modern trains make nice sound, even bombadier stock
And you recorded the copenhagen metro which was ansaldo breda right? They sound sick!!!! We need some of them in UK imo, that would be so cool.
@@benolifts it's not the same VF
The one in the video uses a Kiepe DPU 241, Croydon = DPU 251, Cologne = DPU 221, Dusseldorf = DPU 231, Bremen = DPU 202, Vienna = DPU 211
Sounds like croydon tram
Has a Kiepe VF drive
