Bread and butter issues? The main issues for Ireland are the same as any where else. Set a manifesto and deliver on it. Say something after an election and do it. 1 major issues. Imigrants may add to stress on services and houses. But if you take immigration away you will still have strained service and housing . Many politicians dont priotise things that matter to those that dont have a lot of money or power. This group of society dont help the politicians there there is no reason the politicains to help them. I think Ireland, like the Britain. Needs to be careful allowing immigration to be used as an method for the government not to deliver on promises. I cant help but feel we are being guided to look at the issue of immigration and away from NHS funding , house building. People who arent here yet are being used as an excuse to avoid what we should really be worrying about. Will our children be able live away from home? Will our grand kids have decent schools?
With the amount of money being made from bringing people into the country. They will simply find other ways of doing it. The Rwanda thing will cost so much money and deliver very little. If they end up in Ireland that will save Britain money. Why would Britain want that to stop?
It dumps the problem on Irelands door.

The issue with the Irish is their lack of understanding of the technical political issues that Ireland faces. It is estimated that at least 60% of those entering Ireland illegally do so by plane without proper documentation. This indicates a clear policy issue that involves Irish politics and foreign influences. These matters are often overlooked in order to avoid addressing very serious existing issues, which can be deduced and evidenced through self-examination.

@angusmckenzie9622 Not just illegal immigration, but all immigration.
Ireland's population in 2000 was 3.8 million. By 2023, it had swelled to 5.08 million, despite a recession in 2008 that saw many people emmigrate from the country. The population increase is due to mass immigration, plain and simple
Today, 1 in 5 people in Ireland weren't born there, and in some towns and villages, Irish people are now a tiny minority of residents. They work and are educated with people from vastly different cultures, and they feel like foreigners in their own country.
The Irish are a welcoming people, but most of them are completely against becoming a minority in Ireland, seeing their culture be washed away by a tsunami of mass immigration and allowing foreigners to take the reins of power.
The rate of illegal migration to Ireland is 10 times the EU average. This is now a significant safety concern, because the Irish state does not vett immigrants properly - they have only just discovered that an Iraqi national is a convicted sex offender, even though he sued the state in a high profile case last year.
Immigrants have also committed som atrocious crimes in the past couple of years: the murder of a young teacher who was jogging, the stabbing of young schoolgirls and their teacher, several high profile r*pes, and the butchering of 2 gay men for their sexuality.
Couple that with a housing crisis, a healthcare system that's on its knees, and the rising cost of living, and it should come as no surprise to hear that resentment towards migrants, especially those who demand money from the Irish taxpayer, is growing.
Seeing Ireland's political class p*ss away Ireland's future in the name of wokeness is infuriating.

Border checks have never been a problem in ROI even before the GFA. But then, from January 1993, there were never permanent checkpoints with infrastructure on the ROI side of the border.
Since the GFA has come into effect there have been mobile checkpoints in Counties, Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth operated by -
1). Customs & Excise (C&E) for fireworks prior to Halloween, but mostly diesel dipping checkpoints, but often multi agency (Garda, Tax Office, Welfare Office) to flush out welfare and tax cheats and that motorists have licences and insurance appropriate for the jurisdiction they reside in.
2). Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) mobile checkpoint, mostly aimed at buses, to ensure there are no abuses of the Common Travel Area (CTA).
3). Garda speed checks and drink driving checkpoints.

A big problem is a whole network advertising for jobs in Ireland and elsewhere. Example is "Clara Immigration" and/or "Job Abrodia". "Clara Immigration" lives and acts in Northern Ireland while she keeps advertising Free Visa Jobs in Ireland, in Britain, Sweden, Luxembourg and the list goes on, while filling her own pockets with money and scamming those, who are interested and most likely are vulnerable. I do not understand why these adverts and channels are not taken down, since they certainly are part of the problems countries are facing! In other words, the UK keeps dumping immigrants they don't want into Ireland. Of course "Clara Immigration" will not provide "services" for free and out of the goodness of her heart. Those interested will be paying nice sums of money, though if they were contacting Embassies of these countries first, they certainly would be told what exactly to do and get this information for free. In other words, scammers in action and nobody is doing anything about it

I’m inclined to agree with some of the comments below, Sinn Fein are in serious trouble. This goes well beyond the incumbent government. The majority of SF voters are in working class areas especially in Dublin, and these ares have been impacted mostly by the mass immigration we are currently seeing.
A “new Ireland” with social equality, more housing and the end of partition sounds wonderful but NEVER at the expense of Ireland’s identity, culture and way of life.
SF needs to get to grips with this issue urgently. They need to make it clear as crystal they don’t support mass immigration, they want more controls on Irelands borders, they want deportation if an asylum seeking does not qualify for asylum. They need to act like a proper opposition to the Irish government. Only then will they might start to win back public opinion and their voters. Their voters are moving to anti-immigration parties.

I think you are right in some ways, but have missed a key point in others. The Irish government (FF/FG/Greens) have taken a dictorial approach, refusing to listen to its people and shoehorned an estimated180,000 of mostly illegal males into towns and villages that can't support them in terms of housing and services. Peaceful protesters have be vilified in the state run media (RTE) as far right extremists and racist, and where the police force (Garda) have used extreme brutality against protesters. Bus loads of illegal immigrants arrive at night and dumped into communities without any consultation whatsoever, with the result people don't feel safe in the streets or their homes. Their are Irish citizens who have been on housing waiting lists for 20 years only to see new homes being built and then handed over to illegal immigrants as soon as they arrive. The Irish government has a policy of not asking how they got into the country, you simply turn up and ask where is your new house. Illegal immigrants get a whole range of state benefits that no Irish citizen could ever hope to have, these include free accommodation, free food, free medical card, free transport, we even pay for them to bring their pets over, they get all state welfare and benefits, and free university education etc.,. The people of Ireland are struggling with a cost of living crisis and a housing crisis and at the same time people are waltzing in from anywhere and everywhere and they have access to all of this, which we have to pay for. The Irish government now wants to introduce a hate speech law that would outlaw criticizing illegal immigrants, so you can't even complain about it. Now to why SF is bleeding support, they are on record as saying that there should be no upper limit of immigration and this has cause outrage with the party SF are in real danger of losing a hell of a lot of support.

Even before this asylum seeker issue arose I got the feeling that the same tactics of playing on people's emotions about the whole crisis being due to immigration that led to the rise of UKIP and Brexit are being employed to direct attention away from issues caused by those in power in Dublin, namely the lack of affordable housing and the lack of building these types of housing, to scapegoating immigrants.
I don't want to see Sinn Fein in power in Ireland, but then again the current government is two centre right parties in Finn's Fáil and Fine Gael so it's there any real alternative. In the UK we have a right wing party, the Tories, and a left wing one, centre left at the moment, in Labour, but although Ireland does have a Labour Party it's not of any size whatsoever as far as I can see and disillusioned voters only have Sinn Fein to vote for as far as I can see.

If the republic put in a hard border to prevent the migrants, or even a soft border, this could re ignite the troubles in northern Ireland.

In addition, who do you propose pays for that housing? Social housing does not pay due to the level of freeloaders who, despite being given subsidised accommodation, won't even pay the rent they have signed up to pay, hence the levels of rent arrears in local authorities.

Sinn Fein are in a real quandary over this. Come to that in a minute
The immigration issue is coming more to the fore in Irish politics by the week. We ve seen the footage of all the tents along the Grand Canal and in Mount Street in Dublin.
We know about the British Rwanda plan and we know that a list is being formulated of those who are potentially being deported. Hence the reason they are making their way to Ireland.
And remember they are not going from Stranraer or Carnryan to Belfast or Larne in a rubber boat. They are going on your standard ferry unhindered, paid for by the British and then shown the road to Dublin. This I believe is a fact.
    Now back to Sinn Fein.
Their silence north and south of the border on this issue has been defening.
There is a Sinn Fein first minister in NI and right now the way we see it. Michelle oNeill is doing nothing about this.
Here's a lady that claims to be Irish just like me, but she procrastinates knowing full well that this is causing real concern for us in the Republic. Not a good move
If it continues then us Irish will demand that the border is fully patrolled and supervised on the Republic side to stop this. Before people say there is no man power for this. I believe there will be plenty of volunteers who will gladly patrol the border of our own country to stop this. We want to protect our borders. Just as any other country would do.
Sinn Fein know that right now the only way to do this is to stop the influx of people coming illegally into Ireland via Northern Ireland.
Remember if Sinn Fein wants a unified Ireland then they will have to convince us in the Republic as to why we should vote for this.
And right now they are failing miserably on this.
Interesting times ahead for Sinn Fein

Immigration is about consent Max; we are changing our laws and our cultural way of life to accommodate these people. The average house price nationwide is over now 320,000 euro and growing - how can anyone with no skills or English be a net contributor to our country over their lifetime? Immigration is costing everyone dearly from school places to doctor appointments. The problem Max is that there is far too many people currently to integrate and their numbers will only continue to increase. Which will inevitably lead to violence and vulgar nationalism - especially in Ireland which hasn't the baggage of colonialism that other European nations have. But the very idea that UK, who are responsible for a lot of these conflicts which drive immigration from Afghanistan to removing Gaddafi in Libya and encouraging/weaponising immigration into Ireland is something that needs to be addressed by the Irish Government head on. The Irish Government are pathetic, but no more than the British.

The Hate Speech Bill is designed to legally divide people into 'protected' groups - which is nakedly a divide and conquer tactic. And as with the "durable relationships"; the language is so vague as to lead to legal uncertainty merely to create a chilling effect on Irish people's right to express themselves and defend their current and traditional values. Both of these laws were drafted so Irish people would feel cowed to silence at the risk of losing their livelihoods and to be branded. So, our hotels are full, we have tents everywhere and yet you want more? Explain your plan of action please.

Your proposed solution smacks of naivety and ignorance. You're simply out of your depth on this one. While immigration to Ireland remains high, the State simply cannot build housing fast enough to keep up with demand.
You're also completely ignoring the fact that many people in Ireland are concerned about the shifting demographics of their society.
It's time that Ireland's main political parties swapped Far Left idealism for a strong dose of pragmatism.
Ireland's population in 2000 was 3.8 million. By 2023, it had swelled to 5.08 million, despite a recession in 2008 that saw many people emmigrate from the country. The population increase is due to mass immigration, plain and simple.
This is now a significant safety concern, because the Irish state does not and in many cases cannot vet illegal immigrants properly. One example of the problem this poses is the news story that an Iraqi national who recently came to Ireland from the UK and is seeking asylum is also a convicted sex offender. Despite him arriving in the state more than a year ago, his criminal record has only come to light now. This is despite the fact that he sued the state in a high profile case last year. His conviction by the UK courts should have been made public knowledge then. However, at no point did the Irish authorities even require him to at least register as a sex offender, even though most people in Ireland would rather he was removed from the country without his application being entertained. No one in their right mind wants to provide a safe haven for sex offenders.
Immigrants have also committed some atrocious crimes once in Ireland in the past couple of years: the random murder of a young teacher when she was jogging, the stabbing of young schoolgirls and their teacher, several high profile r*pes, and the butchering of 2 gay men for their sexuality.
Add to this a housing crisis, a healthcare system that's on its knees, and the rising cost of living, and it should come as no surprise to hear that resentment towards migrants, especially towards those who expect money from the Irish taxpayer, is growing.
It also doesn't help that immigrants are often treated better than Irish people (the Irish state has spent €800k on the pets - yes, pets - of Ukrainian immigrants, but can't find the funds to care for many elderly Irish people, for example), or that while Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar labelled as 'Far Right' anyone who opposed mass immigration. Worse still, the gardaí are investigating several Galway County Council members who condemned an arson attack on a proposed migrant hotel, but dared to say they sympathised with residents who had concerns over the housing of hundreds of immigrant men in their small community.
Seeing Ireland's political class p*ss away Ireland's future in the name of wokeness is infuriating, and seeing arrogant Leftists propose ignorant solutions like, 'just build more houses', is even worse.
