  • Gilbert White was a pioneering writer of the natural world, best known for his book Natural Histories and Antiquities of Selborne. He inspired generations of naturalists, writers and artists, including Sir David Attenborough, Virginia Woolf and Eric Ravilious.
In 2020 we celebrated this rich artistic legacy with an exhibition of works inspired by White’s writings, created by artists such as Thomas Bewick, Eric Ravilious, John Nash and Gertrude Hermes.
Thanks to a generous gift by the South Downs National Park Authority we have been able to make an extraordinary film featuring Hugh Bonneville as the voice of Gilbert White.
    Produced by beechtobeach.

I enjoyed this film immensely and found it very uplifting, which is what nature can do for us all. I follow many of these artists and am grateful for their beautiful work. Thank you for producing this lovely film!

A delightful and informative film. The selected artists work were so varied and of the highest quality accompanied by an excellent commentary by Simon Martin.

A truly glorious artistic and artist's remembrance to Gilbert White ~ Thank you. But, let's not shy from 'the natural world' that is "red in tooth and claw" where natural horrors lurk, where the eye of the creature of air and earth is always darting this-away and that, is wary, is frightened in its lookout for ravenous predators that would at a moments notice pounce on the prey and tear it to shreds for its dinner or take pieces torn to the predator's babies to dine on. In truth the natural world is a horror story we dare not tell our homo sapien children 'in truthful blood and gore' in case we exacerbate a propensity, away from silly, safe anthropomorphic bedtime story tale telling, toward where nightmares actually tell the truth.

Pity you could not have extended the exhibition to include Samuel Palmer and John Clare: perhaps the next one!
