Ok
THQ
acclaim entertaiment
Acclaim entertainment Telltale Games, Junction Point Studios
What about 'Ocean Software' - probably the biggest publisher in the 80's (at least in Europe)
This video further proves why EA, Activision and Epic are gaming’s overlords, and why they deserve all the hate that they get
Basically
Especially Disney for killing off Lucasarts.
Yeah I guess they do fuck people over and try to sell their games at a high price
Yep. Activision was actually great back in the day. EA was only decent.
But they forgot liongate the company that made fable
We've got major nostalgia for Neversoft and Midway
same,Neversoft introduced me into marvel verse by 2000 spider-man game (god i loved lee´s narrations there) and Tony Hawk´s Pro Skater 3...and from the video,Westwood Studios and RA2 and YR.
We'd be better off keeping these companies' and their games' memories alive. Remorse won't bring them back, but just to remember them and recognise their successes is enough to honour them. Collective memory and remembrance will keep them alive in our hearts
@@r3l1csvk That Spider-Man game never gets the credit it deserves. Spider-Man as it exists today, still borrows a lot from that game.
Also, I miss the he hell out of Sierra. Literally my first adult games, such as Phantasmagoria, were from them (although I always preferred Shivers…. That goofy game scared the shit out of my 6 year old self
Oh and Silicon Knights…. Jesus the legacy of Kain franchise needs to come back. We still can’t have a great vampire game
Midway 😢
Pandemic Studios breaks the heart. The Saboteur, Mercenaries, original Battlefront were all really good games.
Mercenaries 2 rocks!!!
Don’t forget they were working on a 3rd battlefront game
Destroy All Humans! 1 & 2
Those games were always the best classics. They brought some good memories.
The Saboteur is truly remarkable. It deserves a sequel.
RIP to all these gaming companies!
DANIEL
SiERRA!
LUCUS ARTS!
Bought out and destroyed
@@britneyspearsstan yeah?
Alternate title "EA's murder count"
Lol
Lol
Bruh
After watching the vid there weren't as many as I expected.
Didn’t EA have a redemption arc recently?
I got major nostalgia when I saw the Neversoft logo lmao
Same here
I was like, i've seen that logo before 😂
Same. Playing THPS 2
Tony Hawk Pro Skater
Cause of da Tony Hawk lol
RIP Lucas Arts, a company that couldn’t make a bad game even if they tried :.(
Nah Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kwai was pretty terrible. A game that I wish I never played
@@1Stryder didn’t they make Thrillville too?
Yes, they were also planning to make a Sam and Max but it was scrapped in 2004.
I agree, and it’s all because of Disney buying out the rights to Star Wars…
@@1StryderBut Stars Wars Jedi Power Battles psone was great❤
Westwood forever in my heart. Command & Conquer was my childhood
They should have been on the list and damn near at the top
The first game i ever played on a console. This hurts.
Agreed
Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore, Legend of Kyrandia, Command & Conquer, Dune (except Dune 1), Blade Runner just to name some of the goodness that Westwood brought us.
Westwood was in it's heyday when Virgin owned them. But when EA bought out Virgin Interactive Entertainment, it all went down the toilet ever since. Command & Conquer 4 is an affront to one of the most influential game series.
Let’s not forget the British casualties, which were Psygnosis, Gremlin Interactive, Ocean Software, Bullfrog, Bizarre Creations, Evolution Studios, Argonaut Games, Amstrad, Eidos, Lionhead Studios, Sensible Software, Guerilla Cambridge, US Gold, Blitz Games, Free Radical Design and Hewson.
Eidos is fine? Yes they had a rough patch and Square enix bought them. But they doing good still.
@@aaronh678
Yep
Life is Strange (PS4) is their most successful franchise
Lion head stuios 😪 I will always remember the Fable games
I loved Lionhead's Fable series.
Psygnosis made some great games e.g. WipeOut 2097 and G.Police were so good. We never got the 3rd part to G.Police :(
Sierra made some amazing games over the years. I still have a few floppies with their logo on them. Black Isle is also amazing.
I Played a Detective Game Made By SIERRA, back in Like 1993-1994.
It May Have Been a "Tom Clancy" Game...I Can't Remember...but I *Do* Remember Some GamePlay.
Starsiege 2 was awesome for my teenage self.
I never got into most of Sierra Games since they're Adventure/Point-and-Click and Confusing. (I actually never got anywhere progressively when it comes to Adventure Games with Complex Puzzles and Such) But I do feel for those. I actually liked their Lord of the Realms 2.
Does any one remember their movie tie in games for Robots and Ice Age: The Meltdown?!?!
Rare is still alive, alongside Team17, Atari, Codemasters, DICE and Insomniac. And THQ found new life as THQ Nordic.
Codemasters is acquired by EA now.
@@rulue8610 But they are still alive
Acclaim, Hudson, Neversoft and Midway definitely have my appreciation
To put it bluntly….. It seems that EA is a small studio killer. They buyout these small promising companies working them past their breaking point then discard them without remorse for the employees that are left in limbo wondering what they can do with their livelihoods crumbling around them 😔
Somebody castrate EA already!
Yup... Ubisoft too. Its a shameless way to get rid of small companies.
Yep, any employee that hears, “we’re being bought out by {insert big developer name here}” is code for “polish up that CV and go look for work somewhere else before we close down.”
With the indie dev scene booming and the stigma surrounding buyouts by EA AND the fact that the indie devs are the gamers that were betrayed by EA for closing our favorite studios, karma is coming. I’m a hobbyist dev and there is no amount of money I would ever take from EA. Work with, sure, but they’ll never own the rights to the games.
@@conneich you go, man. One day, EA is going to try to buy out the wrong studio and they're gonna get schooled hard for it.
RIP Midway For Giving Us Mortal Kombat NBA Jam NFL Blitz Gauntlet and Psi Ops
Also the "Cruisin' " series.
No one talks about Psi Ops, that game was amazing. Wish they would do a sequel or reboot type deal
At least scorpion made a cameo in Psy Ops lol
And WWF Wrestlemania Arcade...
And Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks And The Suffering Ties That Bind
Man i miss hudson soft. They knew how to make mario party..
Definitely need a 2nd video with 10 more. THQ, Eidos, New World Computing, Free Radical, Guerilla, and tons more studios. Loved the nostalgia.
R.I.P Black Box Studios. They make one of the best Need For Speed Games.
Telltale Games deserved more than a mere honorable mention. So many amazing games and yet so much tragedy... Show some damned respect...
Tales from the Borderlands. One of the best Borderlands story and every action does actually affect the story further down the line.
Neversoft was awesome, man, I fucking loved the _Guitar Hero_ games since they got me into music when I was younger... So much fun
And THPS ,classics
And Spider-Man the video game too! also Gun.
Guitar Hero was initially developed by Harmonix. The first one, Guitar Hero II and Guitar Hero Rocks The 80s. Neversoft were the developers of Guitar Hero III onward.
@@boredstudent wait a minute! Rock Band from Electronic Arts was also developed by same team.
I still play Guitar Hero. The most influential franchise to me personally.
Maxis. We'll never have a new simcity game again. DAMN YOU EA!!!
Mmhmm...
Every video game player should never buy any of EAs games. Let them rot, They destroyed Maxis so no Simcity games. Also Free radical so no more Timesplitters games, and Redwood studios so no more C&C games, and my favorite Visceral games so no more Dead space games. So yeah DAMN YOU EA!!!!
Maxis was awesome honestly
Right whens simcopter reboot coming
We shall pirate games from EA. It's totally acceptable to pirate any EA games.
989 Studios...😥 Loved their sports games, Twisted Metal series, Coolboarders Series, and wish someone would make a Syphon Filter reboot. I started collecting for PS1 & 2 a few years back. I play Syphon Filter 1 & 2 every Christmas season.. Brings back the memories 😁
Even their football games like Gameday & Gamebreaker were solid
You forgot to mention Brøderbund, they made great games like Prince of Persia and Myst, and lots of educational games!
including Where in the world is carmen sandiego?
@@racheljackson4428 especially Carmen Sandiego.
EA: “Hm this company is doing really good under us, let’s get rid of them so we can start making dogshit games in peace”
:/
Ea in a nutshell lol but seriously fuck ea and there greed
@@aaronatkinson3050 *their
Its also the company's own fault for letting get bought by them
@@agoodhorse7206 dude, they were about to lose all of their money for funding. It was either shut down or get bought out but they got bought out and then shut down anyway. It’s not always the companies direct fault that bigger companies have a monopoly on video games
Pandemic Studios would have been renamed after 2020, because well, you know
R.I.P THQ many great games came from them
THQ was my childhood
@@c9cage14 same here, wwe, rugrats, various gba games, etc
THQ Nordic is THQ
@@AJ-dx6bn no it's not Nordic is a different company who THQ bought in 2014 just after the bankruptcy
@@c9cage14 Not entirely true, THQ had studios in the US and the EU. They simply shut down the NA studios and dedicated "Nordic" to being their main studio, as the EU was where most of the game development had been taking place to begin with. The European studio was under a different name, but it was still owned and funded under the THQ banner.
Sad that Lionhead Studios wasn’t even an honourable mention.
Kinda sad that THQ didn't even get an Honorable Mention
bro THQ was awesome, made good games
Dawn of War 1 through Dark Crusade were funtimes.
@@SableTwoSeven Don't forget all the classic WWE games
That’s what I’m saying
Probably because they technically exist as THQNordic now.
Pandemic is my most missed studio. Mercenaries 1 was such an awesome game. Very, very underrated
In the mid 80s, I remember playing a lot of Apogee games for PCs.
Apogee Software is still alive today as Apogee Entertainment. They became 3D Realms Studios in 1996, and later separated from 3D Realms and became Apogee Entertainment in 2008.
Novalogic, never remembered, never mourned. Even though Delta Force 2 was the first truly viable multi-player online fps
One of my most favourite games of all time is Delta Force Black Hawk Down because this is the first game I played on my PC.
Black Isle closing really broke my heart
As well as its parent company, Interplay.
I miss the old guitar hero I wish a remastered version with all the best hits from all the games no drums no mic just guitar and bass
At least have drums 😂😂 I understand the mic cause I would rather cube with the OG singers
@@dc_galaxy1416 with drums costs more money and more annoying for the trophy/ achievements
@@Ryan01224 oh well I was just referring to just jamming out
@@dc_galaxy1416 I still jam on the PS3 guitar hero I never got the rythm of the drums
Working Designs: Classic RPG Gods (everything on Saturn was amazing)
WD definitely was an amazing company. They also localized a lot of shmups like Thunder Force 5: Perfect System (PS1) and Silpheed: The Lost Planet (PS2). They initially localized games on the TurboGrafx-16 and TGCD.
After Victor Ireland shut down WD, he ended up bringing out a successor company, Gaijinworks.
I miss Sierra so much, the first PC games I bought were SIERRA.
Same. Our first PC (the IBM PS/1) came with KQ4 and Hoyle's Book of Card Games (don't remember which volume. 4, I think).
I miss WestWood Entertainment. I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing Command and Conquer.
Thank you for adding Westwood. It was so good it even reached guiness top 10 then it died
RARE still exists but to me they died back in the '90s and early 2000's
“MIDWAY PRESENTS NFL BLITZ 2000!” Such a fun game, still play it to this day.
Yo when I saw the thumbnail was neversoft I got hit with huge nostalgia. I haven't thought about in years.
Ah, Silicon Knights! I've missed you about the game of Blood Omen and Eternal Darkness. R.I.P. Steven Henifin.
Both titles were staples of my formative years. They really knew how to create engrossing pieces of entertainment.
I would have thought Origin Systems would have been number one since it was pretty much the first big company that was bought by and then shut down by EA...
You could probably do a whole Top 10 list of "Game Companies Bought by EA and then Shut Down"
Yeah...
I came here for Origin. Also Bullfrog deserved a shoutout.
For anyone who was a fan of Westwood and the C&C games the remastered collection of the originals on steam is pretty damn awesome. You can set the graphic style to the original games or play the new remastered graphics, which are great by the way. Highly recommend them.
I miss Bullfrog :( so many classic faves from them.
was looking for this one!
It's shame that EA killed Bullfrog.
@@rulue8610 yeah :(
Really good job Ricky - great list!
growing up with Sierra since my childhood, I will forever cherish those experiences I had since 8086 era. Also sad when they lose license of "Hero's Quest" brand & had to renamed as "Quest for Glory", though still masterpiece & one of the kind only series which none so far has created another style of those games, which I kinda wish someone does, also reasons why I moved to mmorpg due to similar style.
Midway is the game company that broke my heart
For me it is Origin Systems, my all time fav studio. Another casualty of EA. My second top is Lucas Arts, Disney should have never shut them down.
Yea, I secretly love Crusader games
Damn, Pandemic was a good company.. I would give everything for The Saboteur remastered
me too man
Plus the first 2 Battlefront games were so kick ass
The Saboteur is one of the best open world stealth games ever.
Team Bondi. L.A. Noire was and still the best detective game. Press F to pay respects for Cole Phelps.
Pretty much the only one
I just pressed F to pay my respects lol L.A. Noire is an awesome game.
You had awaken some hidden memory deep in my mind when you showed Neversoft.
Clover Studios' demise hit hard, man. I freaking love Okami.
God Hand for me!
I’m a bit surprised Lionhead didn’t make the list. However, and I know most people have forgotten this one, 3DO studio closing was one that devastated my childhood
Some of my greatest childhood memories ever are from playing the Tony Hawk games!
That neversoft logo brings back so many memories...
Lucasarts ... they had gave us the "Jedi Knight trillogy" Lucas original idea for Episodes 7-9 and they are fun games even today
It wasn't a game development studio as much as localization of games from Japan but I will always miss Working Design.
Their PlayStation port of Lunar 1 and 2. The Arc the Lad Collection. Even the PS2 Growlanser games they brought over. Much love for the work they did.
I'd love to see Hudson Soft's series "Adventure Island" make a comeback, but with the IP in the hands of Konami, I'm not holding my breath.
Westwood Studio’s Command and Conquer was so good!
We should all know that little rockstar game doesn't exist anymore 😭
Midway was behind some of my favorite racing arcade machines. Cruise'n Exotica and Hydro Thunder were awesome and ground breaking. I wish there was HD remakes of those machines. They'd chow down my quarters like an all you can eat buffet. Love those games
Man I really do miss midway games because they may blitz the league one and two the most underrated football games in the world
Personally I think that the mercenaries games (especially p2) were some of the best games pandemic made.
I'd love to find copies of BOTH.
Right in the feels with Clover and Never soft game studios.
Sierra should be top 3 easy, You underestimate how big of a company it was as far as changing what gaming on PC was. Their Quest series alone changed everything. Not to mention Dynamix a company purchased by Sierra. The Frontpage sports series changed sports gaming with career-based play. One that you missed was Microprose. X-Com, Civ series, Railroad Tycoon, Gunship, and Master of Orion.
Black Isle Studios< yeah that was a sad day.....To be honest though I have played and enjoyed games from pretty much all these studios. R.I.P
Oh and never let the games be forgotten, know what I mean.
1) I did not know Hudson Soft was shut down.
2) Is Treasure Studios still around?
3) Free Radical is one not listed here that hit me hard.
The nostalgia man i miss all these game companies 😭
I remember Hudson Soft because of Mario Party and Acclaim because of Hard Drivin' and Crusin' World
It's Shane that they doesn't mention that neversoft was the studio who made the OG Spider-Man PS1 & also spider man 2
Activision made the sequel Spider-Man. Both are equally great and dark.
@@alissa6 Especially for me it's special because it was my first spider man game then I played more Spidey games even I didn't know I grew up with it & it's sad then the OG studio just shut off then we know benox make Spidey games but now insomniac is justifying that the Spider-Man games supposed to be man I miss those days.
@@haarisajmeri9811 Same, they were my childhood superhero games on PS1 along with X-Men Academy 2. I also remember Neversoft made a Bruce Willis game that is way darker and that scared me when I was kid.
@@alissa6 yeah man those were the days now sony owned insomniac so we still have a hope.
Lionhead studios of Black and White fame.
Westwood studios was the most tragic in my opinion. Probably the only game series I broke the 1,000 hour mark with
To be honest I just thought neversoft was a co partner with Ubisoft this whole time
1:30 Blizzard was caught up in its former Franco-American owner Vivendi expanding aggressively after acquiring Universal Studios and then staving off bankruptcy.
RIP zipper interactive mag was my favorite shooter of all time and the socom games were classics , rip incognito warhawk and the twisted metal games were classics couldn't even get an honorable mention from mojo
From the list i actually never gave a try to pandemic´s saboteur...tho i might while its still able for purchase, unlike 2012 fps Syndicate made by Starbreeze Studios
namco broke my heart.
Sega, Electronic Arts, Betheseda Works, Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, Rockstar Games and other closure most game companies is heart broken on the PS4 or on the PS3 on TV like Banco Entertainment
I was surprised that Rare is still active. Despite it has become bootlickers to Microsoft.
And that is why they are still active lol
@@vincentrolon3011 Yup, thanks to Banjo-Kazooie, who appeared in SSBU. It seems that Nintendo and Rare have finally reconciled.
Let's not forget AlphaDream (the developers of the Mario & Luigi series)
and although there's THQ Nordic now, the original THQ don't exist anymore; i think he had the same destiny as Acclaim, making too much license games was what dug his grave.
And i was about to say SunSoft too, but i recently saw that it still goes on but is a really really small company now that only develops mobile games (just like Konami now) and remakes of Blaster Master, and i think it is also a subsidiary of Atlus and Sega.
The secondary title to this list: How capitalism kills innovation
Yeah...
what? capitalism creates innovation, its greed of the owner of these companies got them shut down
I'm sad that Looking Glass Studios didn't get at least an honorable mention. Their main two franchises - "Thief" and "System Shock" - are some of the most immersive games ever made.
I like this channel but your notification kinda interrupted me lol
We found one who “Switched on Notifications” on their phone
I really miss Midway and Visceral Games. 😢
While they never “Officially” closed down I also really miss High Moon Studios. Their Transformers games were awesome and Deadpool was a guilty pleasure for me.
I liked Deadpool even though it was not a great game by any means. Visceral is a sad story.
I'm the most heartbroken about Midway and Neversoft
It's Westwood for me, I've talked to a few former devs over the years and they all want to go back to working on Dune or Command & Conquer.
Obviously the guys that formed Petroglyph got a chance to at least do a remaster, but I imagine they're foaming at the mouth right now with the new Dune movie potentially solving the whole licensing issue with the Herbert Estate.
Looking Glass Studios! How the hell did you not include this dev?
*Press F to pay respects for them.*
F
F
I feel like the saddest ones were neversoft and tell tale 🥺😭 brings back alot of memories especially with tell tale
Looking Glass Studios and Ensemble Studios should be on this list.
I thought TUROK was amazing when I played it as a kid. It seemed so cool and ahead of its time.
You know, you could have at least mentionned AlphaDream. Do you know how the Mario and Luigi games were important to us and how painful it was hearing about the studio's bankruptcy?
*MICROPROSE* made *Enemy Infestation* in 1998 , still amazing game
What would happen if these game companies still existed? Which was their best games?
Bizarre Creations last and best game was The Blur
I grew up on Sierra games, my favorite being Lara Bow Dagger of Amon Ra. Best adventure games ever made.
Ah, Neversoft, the company name that gets less and less accurate the older I get, lol.
The one that hurts me the most is Westwood Studios. Always loved the Command and Conquer games. RIP.
They didn’t mention Bungie Software, which I believe it was behind the Marathon series of shooters.
I am surprised that you didn't mention Neversoft's Spider-Man games
09:06 Lucas Arts was more or less undead at the point when Disney acquired it. Starting from 1997, Lucas Arts basically canned all other titles for favor of star wars titles, due to the fact that their bread and butter genre that was point and click adventure games started to be a thing of the past. This decision no doubt was reinforced by 1998 title "Grim Fandango", which was commercial failure despite being critically acclaimed. New millenium is basically all star wars and at the same time they started shutting down their own developement as well, preferring to outsource their games instead of developing themselves.
#1 should be Blizzard Entertainment.
The developer and company we knew is long dead and gone.
Westwood hit hard haha That Command and Conquer music was so good!
