The ISO dial on the left was an issue on my m10mono. I thank Leica for fixing it but for heavy use its design wasn’t durable. Thanks for doing this work!
The function button on the M11 can double as magnification: with the Visoflex 2 attached, push the function button for one second and release to toggle between Info Profiles and Magnification. Once I’ve set my preferred Info Profile, I change the setting to Magnification and leave it that way.
I own the Leica M10-D and the Leica M-D (typ 262). I believe adding the latter to the comparison would be amazing. The Leica M-D has the iso dial in the same place the Leica M11-D has, only thing it does not offer auto iso. The battery life of the Leica M-D is the best battery life you can get on any Leica even over the newest cameras. The M-D t is actually the closest thing to analog, it ONLY shoots RAW, and there are not any other adjustments that can be made apart from the exposure triangle. There is no wi-if, no nothing. Think of it as an almost fully mechanical analog Camara with a digital sensor instead of film. (It does recocks the shutter automatically). I also have the EPSON RD1x and it is utterly fun to use the fully operational advance lever to recock the shutter every time you take a picture. I wish this feature was included in the Leica “D” series. Then the advance lever would serve the thumb rest purpose and give you the full analog experience. Interesting video!
Awesome remark. Yes I’ve heard that the MD has a great battery life not seen it myself is huge. Regarding the thumb support , I always thought that that would’ve been amazing to have to crank it to take the next picture. Thank you for your comment and I’m glad you like the video
Thanks for this great comparison! I think the -D experience would be special. Though after over a month on the wait list for the M11-D, I pivoted and picked up the Hasselblad X2D as I have been wanting to try that one as well plus it was readily available. M11-D will have to wait for now.😊
Lovely concept(s), both of them. Wonderful haptics and general feel. But, as with ALL digital Leica M bodies since the M8, ridiculously flawed: all are crippled by start-up lag (be it initial boot or wake-from-sleep), they are all buggy in one way or another (M8's IR sensitivity, M9's sensor degradation, M10's ISO dial degrading contacts, M11's array of freeze scenarios, etc), they all require absurdly lengthy repair and CLA work back in Wetzlar, they are all oversensitive to SD card issues, etc, etc. The "D" versions rely more than others on radio connectivity with mobile devices for setup and operation, which is counter-intuitive in itself. And now the M11-D cannot even format a SD card in-camera, which goes against well established best practices. The M10-D and M11-D should be faster, more nimble, less power greedy, more robust than their "normal" sibblings. They should be closer to the wonderfully streamlined, reliable and reactive experience of any film M. But they are not. Makes me sad in fact. I type that looking at my beloved 30 year old M6 waiting on the living room table...
@ @ looking back at my old M9 pictures, I have to agree they look different and more “alive” (contrast, saturation) than my less old M10 ones. Except in low light or high dynamic range scenarios. But I do remember operation was just as laggy in terms of electronics. I also remember the cracked sensor and replacement delays.
Unfortunately we can’t ignore some of the scenarios you stated. I personally, other than the occasional freezes I never had the need my Leicas out to services and I own 10 bodies
Owning both I do respectfully disagree on your final thoughts. The M11 D design is cleaner and better in every single way other than the thumb rest. The longer battery life and direct usb c charging is very convenient. For anyone considering the two definitely go with m11 D. From min iso of 64 to the hybrid shutter it’s more versatile. Also personally I do see an image quality difference with the M11 sensor. If you are used to using visoflex or close distance focusing skip this camera and get the M 10 R or M11 P. The screen just makes more sense for you. Hope this helps
Own the M11P as well. And I agree that the M11D is superior in tech, the internal memory, longer battery life, new sensor and processor etc. but as of the experience of pseudo analog the M10D fulfills that spot for me. I do not use visoflex in this camera. I find that it kills the purpose of it. Thanks for sharing
Honestly the format function is a non issue. I am using M-D (262) and it doesn't need to format cards but can use all cards, almost no matter how they have been formatted or used in another cameras. What I would have liked to find out from your video is about the shake issue due to the higher res which forces the photographer to use +2 stops higher shutter and pushes the iso up and also finding out how you like the colours or maybe don't find a difference.
A format option on a 10K camera is a must. I never format my cards other than in the camera. 60 MP will make jitter more noticeable. But you can always downsize the res to 36 or 18 on the M11D.
I'm considering purchasing the Leica M11-P with the Summilux 50mm and APO Summicron 35mm lenses. Is this a better idea, or would a Leica Q3 be a better choice?
Own all the above. If you are considering 50 and 35 as focal length the 28mm of the Q3 may be not what you are looking for. Remember the Q can’t change lenses the M11P can take any lens even LTM. So it all comes down if you can live with a 28mm stuck to your camera forever or if you want the freedom of putting whatever lens you want. Also the Q3 has AF the M11P is manual focus.
To reduce the start-up time on the M11-D, just leave it on and it will go to sleep mode (default is set to 2m), by tap the shutter once, the camera will come alive and ready to shoot under 1 second. 😊
As soon as I see what I wanted to photograph I press the shutter to activate the camera, and by the time I bring it to eye level, it is already 1 second gone by and I'm able to shoot immediately. I did the same test with zone focus and I'm able to shoot 1 second from activate the camera (you can hear the clicking sound when the shutter opened up).
Interesting comparison, thank you! I find "-D" cameras so appealing, but I think it's important to have a histogram with a digital sensor (and don't care for the visoflex).
you have forgotten to mention super slow wifi , super slow standard for sd cards , lack of internal memory , no way of uploading images by cable , issue of proprietary charger and ac unit , and overall slowness of system responsiveness on part of m10
the more I use the M series the weaker I became. I love the M11 series due to this as the M just got lighter and it's so worth it changing from brass to lighter material. I love my m11d mixing with 35 lux PreA the images it produces are just perfect and so much like film.
Nice compare. I have the m6 and now I’m thinking to get a M10r completely new, the just shoot 150x . Is it worth? I will save a lot of money from buy the new model
I think that you’ll find an M11 for similar price as an M10R battery is great, internal memory triple resolution. And with the latest firmware all issues seemed to be gone. But again. It’s a personal matter. Try to go to a store and play with both. Or rent them first.
Lovely cameras, if they weren’t so darn unreliable and had something like a 15 year warranty guaranteed that will have sensors and all parts for them the price would be a great value. Where there film cameras are basically good for life for parts. But lovely to look at.
I can’t understand why anyone wants to buy the M11D without the lever that M10D had. No lever, no brass, no iso knob, what else can we remove we remove lol
hated the FAKE lever , the crap of battery that lasted 3 hours for me , the super slow old SD card type , the issue of carrying proprietary Charger and AC unit . the slowness of camera and mere 24mp lack of 4k + shutter. no internal memory , super slow unreliable wifi. no way of uploading images by cable ... those are the reasons to not like it
@@peetje28021970 You couldn't see the brass on the black M10/M10-P/M10-R either because the black chrome finish wears through to the silver zinc coating on the brass (unless you scratch or chip it pretty hard). Only the M10-R "Black Paint" edition would wear to the brass. It's almost a given that there will be an M11 Black Paint edition that is brass.
I feel like Leica needs to shake up their design department- both the SL3 and M11-D are ergonomically and feature-wise worse than their predecessors…the M10-D’s design was perfect, all they had to do was put the new battery, sensor, and processor in, leave everything else alone. Instead, they monkeyed with the design, dropped the ball, and made it worse. It’s a real shame, because I want them to keep making the D line, but I think this new iteration is so bad, it won’t sell well.
I wish they'd kept the handgrip lever, but otherwise I much prefer the M11-D. The M10-D rear dial is an interface disaster. The M11-D rear dial is just like the M film cameras - perfection.
I prefer the on/ off/ wifi and the rear EV dial on the M10-D. The M-11 looks like a compromise in design and cheap materials. Doesn’t feel solid like an M2 or MP. I guess comparing the M11-D to an M6 is close as it also has plastic bits and inferior zinc top plate

For me the m9 - with replaced Sensorglas - is the sweet spot in Leicas M lineup for film camera experience.

Too bad they got rid of the brass in the 11 series
