Decathlon present some of the best value that I've seen on the market. If they ever consider delving into aero frames, I'll be seriously interested as to what they can cook up.
I honestly wouldn't trust the design tech to be at the same level as an experienced brand. So I'd rule it out for racing and such things. Great value for a training bike though

@@wouter4739 wow so many butthurt people for saying something so inoffensive. It's true, carbon is a material that is ideally THOUROUGHLY DESIGNED. I'm so sorry you guys don't understand as much about bike physics. I'm sure you can race fine with a decathlon bike and I personally wouldn't give 2 shits about what people think. But DESIGN will count every time you grab a corner in a crit race. It dictates how it feels, and how it behaves under load. And I have no guarantee of the level of expertise in engineering Van Rysel has. I'd buy it though since i'm not racing and not into marginal gains. PD: I hate the big brands. Just so you think twice before calling people elitist, you twat. Good luck.
Better yet let's leave it hanging with the infamous general wisdom that says: Better buy killer aluminum than cheap carbon. Quite frankly i'm starting to believe that you're the elitist that wants to ride carbon fiber.
I am a big fan of decathlon for many years. Started with hiking equipment, camping, kayaking and trail running. It’s because they compete in France with Salomon as domestic brands. Mountain bikes were not brilliant but all staff around biking is great.
I have the rim model. The frame is stiff and compliant. Although it say EDR Endurance it is quite a racy geometry with only a 138mm head tube and 551mm stack in a size medium - I have still not had any aches after 60 mile rides though. The Ultegra gears shift seamlessly on the cassette and compact (no dropped chains). The Fulcrum wheels are semi aero 35mm deep and roll well (the wheel set alone is well over £300 bought separately). Not really seen any reason to upgrade the seat post and saddle though if you are a weight weeny you could save a hundred grams or so by upgrading these. All in all a good all round bike for short blasts or longer days in the saddle.
I now have even more respect for my size 50 CAAD12 with C2 seat post, C3 cockpit, SI expander with 5mm topcap, Prologo bar tape and Dimension 143 NDR Tirox, R7000 group set and pedals except R8000 11-28 cassette and R9100 front derailleur, Pro Lite Bortola, Token BB, 28mm Ultra sport 3, Black cat inner tubes, Gamin Edge 130 which weighs 7.961 kilograms currently but could be brought down to 7.910 if I didn’t sell the CS-R9100. Can’t wait to get a light carbon cockpit set up and full Dura Ace on it.
If you can live with having and riding a bicycle that doesn't have famous names on the frame, than the bikes from Decathlon are way to go because you get the best possible value for your money on the market, plus ability to test ride the bike in store, plus lifetime warranty. I recently boght a Btwin Fc700 used carbon road bike from Decathlon with full 10 speed Sram Rival. The bike is arround 6 to 8 years ols but doesn't have a single scratch on it. The owner bought it, rode it a couple of time and was collecting dust in the garage. So the bike in fairly new condition, made from carbon which weights 8 kilo I payed 450 euro. More than this kind of bike I don't think that most of amateurs really need. Everything else is just training, diet and achiving targets...
The 105 version is ridiculously good value . Great to see you showing such a bike in detail. I feel a GCN test coming on against a super bike with a 105 groupset also Ali wheelset and same stock weight. Ollie, tech question we NEED you to answer. Talking areo, watching the Tour TT, are there flat handle bars that "retract" when the rider uses the areo position? If not, why not?
Hi i have a question to this bike plss answer GCN. Do you have also this situation that from the other side when looking on the bike (the handbar is on the left and the rear wheel is on the right.) They are two holes. They go inside the frame above the fork. They are propably from hydraulicy breaks etc. The hole that is more on the left doesn't have a plastic seal/gasket. Do you have the same situation? Sorry for my englisch
I did have its predecessor, the Ultra (but it's an AF). I may consider this when it arrives at Asia's Decathlon Stores since the B'Twin Ultra 700 AF (now the Van Rysel RCR 900 AF) is still selling.
I have the van rysel rcr 900 and I ejoy it a lot...they seem to have discontinued it though... I wanted to buy the di2 version next year and keep the other one as a second bike... I'm not sure if I should go for the edr series though
It's still a good offer with respect to most of the competition, but I have to be the guy that says that everything was better. The old white color scheme was beautiful, black is not everybody's taste. Rim brakes version was lighter and by far cheaper, but it is now sold out everywhere and I guess no loger produced
Thanks for reading the spec sheet out loud for me, but I 'd rather get to learn more about riding position and ride quality. Then I would know wether its an alternative for a mid-range bike from a leading brand.
0:57 geometry, weight and gear ratio is the key not budget i have ridden very expensive bikes that is not suitable to my riding capability and geometry and have been dropped. Whereas some cheap bike have scored quite well. So no sure whether we should also discuss geometry and its advantage in climb , endurance, power transfer as well in this kind of review... something to ponder upon @gcn
It all depends. Can you back handle the aggressive geometry of decathlon bikes? If you can’t then its not worth the money and screwing your back. If you know you know.
also lower end decathlon bikes (also triban) have horrible bottom brackets and super cheap parts that aren't branded like cassettes, chains and so on. they will need replacement after a few hundred kilometres. worked there as a bike mechanic and basically all bikes up to the mid level broke down as soon as they were actually used, pretty much marketed to people who buy and dont use. higher end is okay but you need to be lucky with your mechanic who set up the bike if you can't do that yourself as they don't get or need training when hired
I got one of these in Canada recently. Great deals just now. North American models a bit different- rim brakes and QR hubs. Suits me, cos I can still use older wheels on it, but make sure you know what you are getting.

A giant propel disc is £2600. Low end canyons are less that that too. I really don’t think this bike is particularly good value. I think you should review the entry level road bikes such as the trek domane al with Claris and the specialised allez etc. Those are the bikes which most people ride, and expensive bikes just aren’t necessary 99% of the time
Hello, pour un Ironman j'hésite beaucoup entre celui-ci et un Cervelo Caledonia 105. Est-ce que tu aurais une préférence pour un des deux vélos ? Le parcours est légèrement montagneux (1600m d+).
This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
#askGCNTech where does one best spend money on an upgrade? my bike is a Ribble Sportive Racing of about 8 years old, with substantial mileage now. 105 version has different wheels, saddle, handlebar and an aluminium seatpost.
Thanks Oly, Great vid, very relevant to club cyclists. Love it! As a life long 105 fan there can be only one choice for me.
@@Megadeth6633 And? Its not like if i couldnt win on a top range van rysel i would win on a specialized with the same price. I would go even further and say i would finish higher on the Van Rysel.
@@Megadeth6633 I can buy a Van Rysel with Ultegra Di2 for the same money as a Specialized Tarmac with 105. The fact thet you still think the specialized would be better is just dumb elitist cyclist behaviour.
Good luck.
Better yet let's leave it hanging with the infamous general wisdom that says:
Better buy killer aluminum than cheap carbon.
Quite frankly i'm starting to believe that you're the elitist that wants to ride carbon fiber.
Man, i got AF version, its amazing, this one looks like dream bike.
Super Nice , thanks Ollie !
I am a big fan of decathlon for many years. Started with hiking equipment, camping, kayaking and trail running. It’s because they compete in France with Salomon as domestic brands. Mountain bikes were not brilliant but all staff around biking is great.
Just nice to see different brands 👍
Can you review the rim brake version of the Van Rysel EDR?
All in all a good all round bike for short blasts or longer days in the saddle.
good idea on 105 not bad bike for less £ but not in stock :/ sold out all
A lighter groupset is still preferable but if budget is a concern, 105 is always a good choice.
Then stick some firecrests on and di2 and see what the Van is like compared to a similar bike . I have a sneaky feeling it could turn into a super bike killer …. Nope I don’t own one don’t work for Decathlon or Van … just sometimes in all fields a product comes along that well out performs it’s price point and I feel you’ve found a gem 👍🏼
Decathlon paid gcn for this. Otherwise they wouldn’t do anything for free. Plus its summer in the UK so decathlon needs bike sales.
@@PhiyackYuh yes of course …but still doesn’t mean it isn’t a great bike or a great deal 🤷🏻♂️ and to be perfectly honest nobody NEEDS bike sales at the moment. I have several friends around the country who are in the bike industry who are all saying they sell everything they can get their hands on at the moment . I still stand by my comments that this is a great value bike 👍🏼
@@PhiyackYuh Decathlon barely have any bikes to sell
There's now a version in a very, very smart, red paint job for 2700 € (in Germany). The all black one costs 2500€. Only problem is there have been none available for months now.
i have to admit i've been eyeing the 105 version of this one as a upgrade from my 2018 canyon endurace al 6.0
Have you decide already to upgrade? I also have a canyon al and I am considered to upgrade to this van rysel bike.
@@surfers9696 yes! i'll probably upgrade for the next season! not sure tho if i'm gonna go with the van rysel one. probbably gonna get one froma local dealer in my area. I would have to order this one online.
My next Christmas bike right there. Entry to some races and stuff
Love it, whilst it's great to showcase and lust after £10k weapons, these are the type of bikes the people are after!
Can you comment on the size and fit of this bike. I am 173cm with 80cm inseam, which puts me in between size s and m. The bike has a very agressive geometry and long seat tube. Do you need the bike fits big? Thx
Take S. I am 175, took M and later I found out thar the S would fit me better. 🤷♂️ I shortened the reach by changing stem end bars (42mm is wide for me) and its better.
@@tomasjarincik3118 thx I got an m too but it is too big. I returned and got a trek domane instead.
Looks beautiful 😍
merida scultura endurance 6000 or van rysel edr cf ultegra?
The bike is available in the EU for EUR 2,599.
At today’s exchange rate that is GBP 2,226. Which is a staggering £773 (or 25%) less than the UK price.
Yup, the 105 version is about £1.9k in Europe but 2.2k in the UK 😭😭
I've just paid 1999€ (£1700) for the 105 version
@@danpos1 the price difference is ridiculous
Groupset of the people, every time.
Nice! Wonder if Motobecane designs and builds their frames.
Yes, no plastic inserts for the hydrolic breaks hoses as well on mine. Only for the transmission as cables run with no housing in the frame.
It is a bit weird but ok. Maby it is for the ventilation of the watter in the frame. Ty for answer :)
What about the Orro Venturi STC ? £2,700 for a ultegra equipped aero bike from the uk.
Thanks for reading the spec sheet out loud for me, but I 'd rather get to learn more about riding position and ride quality. Then I would know wether its an alternative for a mid-range bike from a leading brand.
Nice. 2 thumbs up for the video and bike. 👍🏻👍🏻
Which size did you have? I ask because of the mentioned weight
He got the weight wrong.
I have this bike for almost a year, and i can approve it is really good for the PRICE//VALUE
Best value for money in carbon: van rysel
Best value for money in aluminium: Triban
Period.
It all depends. Can you back handle the aggressive geometry of decathlon bikes? If you can’t then its not worth the money and screwing your back. If you know you know.
@@PhiyackYuh u jus need a smaller size
I don't like the Tribans because they have externally routed cables as well as quick release axles. Not the most ideal if you are running discs.
also lower end decathlon bikes (also triban) have horrible bottom brackets and super cheap parts that aren't branded like cassettes, chains and so on. they will need replacement after a few hundred kilometres. worked there as a bike mechanic and basically all bikes up to the mid level broke down as soon as they were actually used, pretty much marketed to people who buy and dont use. higher end is okay but you need to be lucky with your mechanic who set up the bike if you can't do that yourself as they don't get or need training when hired
@@Stoney3K yeah that is a point.. but you can run full outer cables for the cable problem...also you get 105...so😅😅
I always like bikes from decathlon, as they are affordable for me.
Would get the rim brake version
Nice review! Which bottle cage is that?
I was in decathlon this morning and I think, it is the van rysel one in carbon fiber, looks really nice
I got one of these in Canada recently. Great deals just now. North American models a bit different- rim brakes and QR hubs. Suits me, cos I can still use older wheels on it, but make sure you know what you are getting.
I am in Canada also. I am considering getting this bike from Decathlon as it is a great price. Do you still like yours?
@@konradholmes7026 Haven’t had a chance to ride it properly yet, but it’s all pretty solid. Now it’s warmer I’m looking forward to getting out.
About time you did reviews on the "cheaper" end of the market.
At that price point, you get a canyon that is at least as good, and lighter.
True. This is called marking up the price because it's appearing on GCN.
the british Decathlon prices are completely off. In the EU the same bike costs 2600€, which is basically 900€ cheaper (3000 pounds = ~ 3500€). Brexit hits hard i guess
@f wam GB is still inside of europe lel - but idk very much about the positives and negatives so i won't argue :)
@@channul4887 i guess this will be the reason for these price-politics, i mean the difference is insane but i could be wrong. If so, feel free to tell me
@@KevinArantes yeah, got mine for 2600€ with Ultegra and Tubeless... was wondering about the price in GB.
and then there's a special feeling smoking s-works and aeroads guys on a decathlon bike

tremendous value
I am planning to buy this bike but 105 group set
It was great to see a cheap bike, but I still miss Jons bike builds, and feel slightly sad when I see the rebuilt frame cannibalized for decor on the tech show wall.
Try the South East Asia budget bike world brands. Trinx, Sunpeed, etc.
Yes, 1000-1500Euro bikes please!
I’ll take the Ultegra version. Please send it my way.
looks great
I’d have whichever one I could get my hands on but they are out of stock in every size and spec at the moment.
I'm surprised GCN Corporate let you talk about a bike that isn't making them money. Or is it?
GCN obviously getting paid to feature the bike.
@@oscardot Yeah probably, or maybe just the groupset earns the money.

#askGCNTech where does one best spend money on an upgrade? my bike is a Ribble Sportive Racing of about 8 years old, with substantial mileage now. It originally was at the breakover in cost for Carbon frame so it has a 105 drivetrain and shimano RS11 wheels on it - do I first spend money to upgrade the wheels or the drivetrain? Eventually I'll do both, but want to make the budget as effective as possible!
Makes a lotah lotah sense.
It's a lovely looking bike but definitely not cheap.
I want one! I tried to buy one but " not in stock" PS. I will be notified when in stock.
Own a RCR Carbon Ultra frame, 105 groupset, Aksium Mavic wheels, and 8kg, including shimano pedals!!, just worth every single penny vs other heavier and 3 times more expensive bikes!!
#GCNTECH - Taking a leaf from motorcycles is there any benefit in running different width tyres front and rear e.g. 28c front, 32c / 35c rear?
Nice bike but couldn't handle those gear ratios ( being old and living in the Peak District). Still hankering after an Aethos with 12 speed Rival!
Feel free to recommend another sub 7.5kg bike with electronic shifting and wide range gearing for under £4.5k. Oh... and no fugly dropped stays .... then I can add that to the wish list and carry on riding my current 9.5kg bike.
I want to see a claris equipped bike, bike check.
