- The RNZAF's fleet of five Lockheed C-130H Hercules transport aircraft served New Zealand for 60 years.
Learn all about the aircraft from the people who flew it in the 1960s, and the final crews who operated the Hercules until its retirement.
This film is a tribute to this extraordinary aircraft and to all of those who maintained and operated the mighty Hercules over those years.

Thank god someone made a fitting send off for these birds, you nailed it. I spent 7 years as a technician at 40 Sqn recently, for anything to last 60 years is an achievement, but for a machine to give me such good memories and experiences around the world is exceptional.
Hats off to those that made this film.
A big THANK YOU to the team for flying over Paraparaumu the other day. I'd just gone outside for a breath of fresh air, and thought before seeing them something along the lines of, that sounds a bit larger than a Cessna.
Heard the same in Greymouth, West Coast. 3 hercs in a row flew straight over town and hard banked towards the ocean, awesome sight. Definitely wasn't a small plane but they were flying like one!
The cinematography and attention to detail throughout this tribute is incredible. These aircraft will live on for many years in the memories of the crews that had the privilege to serve on them. What a machine.
My dad was the original Squadron Leader of the C-130s. I was recently reading his memoir of his time in the USA when they went to pick them up and train. He was always very proud to have served on those wonderful aircraft.
I saw 3 of them doing their last fly over, it was incredible sight to see such large planes flying low and weaving all over the sky showing off how versatile they are.
I am from the Solomon Islands in the Pacific a big thank to the RNZAF C130 H team, you have certainly served the pacific including my nation above and beyond. Watching this send off video it reminds me of the missions that the RNZAF C130 H (NZ) and the RNZAF as a whole served in Solomon Islands ranging from Operation helpem Fren (RAMSI), many Disaster Response and Relief Supplies Air lifts supports, Search & Rescues, Disaster Rapid Assessment by air, and the recent National General Elections, a big that you to all RNZAF for your support in our time of need. Yes we to in the Solomon too will miss the sound of the C130 H (NZ) and the fly by over our skies. To the air crews, maintenance ground crews of the C130H (NZ) job well-done, MISSION ACCOMPLISH... We all Salute you, thank you for your service & dedication.
Grant Pringle!
I remember making tea for you at 3 Squadron thirty years ago.
You’re looking great sir.
One hell of a send off for one hell of an aircraft
Thank you so much for coming over to say goodbye on Monday. And for all your help during the earthquakes. We’ll come and visit you in Wigram.
I spotted them flying over Paraparaumu. Woohoo!
Thank you, to everyone who have used this aircraft for humanitarian aspects and for looking after them so that they could do this role.
As a helicopter pilot, I respect pilots of aircraft that are so large and have a lot of effective power.
This video nearly had tears in my eyes, the C-130 has been a real thing for New Zealand for so many years.
Thanks for the video!!
What a beautiful video, and a lovely send off for the old birds. I honestly think the Herc is the greatest aircraft ever built in my opinion.
Thank you for your service, one and all involved.
Incredible production value thank you for your work
Saw the 3 fly low over Whanganui a few days ago, What an amazing sight. They are very extraordinary aircrafts.
beautiful send off for a brilliant work horse great video
Great video for a great aircraft.
Very interesting. A truly wonderful aircraft! Thank you for sharing this video.
Saw them on their last fly by in Wellington yesterday. It looked just like the first flight on this vid. Amazing to think there's sixty years in between .
It was pretty wicked seeing them do their low formation flight over wellington yesterday
Awesome work to the team who put this together
Beautiful memories
Always marveled at it passing us by going into Ohakea airbase from the state highway. Beautiful aircraft that was iconic in our skies.
Absolutely brilliant fly over in Timaru. Thank you
I was lucky enough to see 3 of them land at Invercargill & take off the next morning and do a flyover of the city. They've been magnificent RNZAF work horse for so many years.
Man we were so excited to see this come over Mt Cook and you guys flew down the Hopkins instead 😓
What an aircraft - well done to everyone at 40SQN who served and worked with the C130H. Heroes - NZers should be very proud of the incredible work you all do.
2 of these flew over my House 2 weeks ago in Hikurangi Northland . They were flying super low and were very loud .
Good to see you we all came out and enjoyed your turn out over the lake xxx love to the crew and engineers 40 sq
seen then fly low over milton, dunedin the other day. Amazing!
We lived in Paremoremo for 10 years which was essentially across the water from the airbase at Whenuapi and on the flight path. Always loved the sound and the shaking of the house when they were doing low level flight training, especially at night. Absolute workhorses of the skies 🫡
Thank you old girl. We travelled so far with you, holding us firmly in your noisy cave. The ease of exit, often with chute, was never boring. Time and again we sought your comfort, even with earplugs fitted.
1974 Chch to Darwin , then onto Singapore ,Jalun ulu in the mighty Hercules . Awesome aircraft. Thank 02 .
Thanks Shaunlee. Love you. And Roblee and Chrislee and Zoet
And salshlee🎉❤
I saw and heard them do the final fly over.. wonderful and sad sad to see
Bristol Freighters always looked like giant bumble bees. I still miss Vampire jets…my favourite when I was a kid. Sad to see the last of the Hercules. Amazing planes.
Best ever ❤
Wow the c130 imma sub
DO NOT DESPAIR: The C-130H has been replaced in NZ service by the enlarged and modernized C-130J-30.
Can't wait to see them land at wigram airbase. I saw the runway at Woodburn marked out to the exact same size as the grass one at wigram as it is now so they can train to land. Chch will know when it's coming as the grass runway at wigram will be mowed.
Ute of the sky!
Here's to another 60
Saw them in a formation of 3 in Christchurch yesterday. Then saw a single one later in the day - was it flying to the Air Force museum at Wigram base? It will be a great addition to the museum.
My grandfather worked in the Lockheed factory in Georgia on the C130 assembly line. It was and is a fantastic air platform
Hope to see 01 land at Wigram soon ;)
You served this country well but your little brother must take over
Can’t wait to see the supers in the skies above 😊 only caught a glimpse out here on the coast! Shed a wee tear! 😢 60 years of fantastic service! Thank you ole girls xxxx
We where at the burnham military base all waiting for them to fly over and they completely missed us! Saw one go by way off in the distance lol bit of a let down
So is that why one flew over my house a few days ago?
saw it flying low above Cromwell
Was this the 3 flying over Christchurch on Tuesday?
What are our new replacement?
Brand new C-130J, which is much better in every metric
o7
So the C130 is the 'baby boomer of military transport :-) the next thing the NZDF needs to do is replace the 757s that keep breaking down....
Are we going back to Cessna? Long range border patrol?
sad
why are places still offering flight engineer training if the job market is so small?
Battled the decision to train when I was younger.
Disappointed in nz education system.
Please bring back the Skyhawks xx we can't be the wimpy NZ
one fighter jet these planes boom.
Could have done without the loud crappy music.
really who cares our airforce is nothing
My mate before he got married he was in the air force as a avionics technician. About mid late 2000's he spent almost a year in Waco TX at a facility having these birds refitted with new systems which was very expensive. I was born the year after these arrived in New Zealand.
Have training in one of these nap of the earth flight from Taupo to the old artillery range with 2 105 field howitzer and a dozen troops super low and fast with a short landing 🛬 amazing what these guys can do with them
Beautiful aircraft, such a shame to see such a large % of our air force retire..I Cant to have a look at the replacements, they look great also.. big shoes to full, if only the air force wasn't treated like a joke by previous governments over the last 20- 30 years
Is there anything that isn't "iconic" these days?
It's like 15 years ago when everything was "bizarre".
