This is a beautiful video, Johanna! I loved hearing about your mother’s supportive role in your reading life, and it’s so cool that you were able to share some great stories with her too. What a wonderful bond! Finally, we got to see the cutest BABY ELVISH ASSASSIN ever in this video!!!
Thank you so much, Philip! I was a very early guest in DDF, so I'm not sure I got to answer the question on your show, but I'm glad you enjoyed this story about my mom's influence. I love that photo of Baby Silent "H." 🥰🧝🏼♀️😄 Wishing your family a wonderful Mother's Day!
I love this video. It was interesting getting to learn about the books you read in your formative years. I read the Just So Stories as well. Goosebumps and Hardy Boys were favorites of mine as well. And yes, those literacy stats are depressing. I agree with many of Jonathan Haidt’s solutions in his new book The Anxious Generation. I think social media and smartphones have a good deal to do with this phenomenon, as well as the rise of the Single Parenthood rate. There are other major factors as well, obviously. Thanks for making this!
Thank you, Jordan! I love learning about Generation Theory and need to check out that new book. Glad to hear your endorsement for it! I agree that smartphones and single parenthood can add extra challenges when it comes to literacy.
Beautiful video! I have a mother who reads a lot and modeled that for us as children, we went to the library at least once a week. She didn’t love everything I picked up (she’s religious), but we always had access to books. Now as a mother I try to read to my kid whenever they ask, we usually do it at breakfast and always at bedtime. It seems like they are gaining a love for books too and I’m so excited to see that. It helps that kids books are so much bette now, lots more silly or kid geared ones.
That's wonderful that you're carrying that tradition forward with your kid! I'm sure you're right about kids books being much better now. Thank you so much sharing that. Happy reading!
What a lovely and wholesome video!! Your mom sounds like an absolute hero ❤ My mom also encouraged us to read, but never forced it at all. There was a period where we all sort of fell out of it, but when I picked reading back up in 2018, she actually joined me and we've been best book buddies ever since 🥰
That is so wonderful!! My mom read only a little and though I know my dad did at one point (he has so, so many books), neither of my parents pushed me to read--I kind of fell into it naturally, and they were incredibly accomodating. We frequented used and new bookstores all the time, and though my mom would sometimes give me odd looks on what I picked, she'd always buy it for me. 🥰 These days I find I need to encourage my kids a bit more because video games vy for their attention so strongly, but both of my boys are well above their reading level and my eldest loves talking to me about what I'm reading or showing off what he picked from the school library. Mostly though I just try to lead by example, and that's what got me back into reading in the first place--I realized quickly as a new mom that I didn't want iPad kids, and so I couldn't sit on my phone all day either. I owe them a debt of gratitude as well for leading back to one of my passions!! ^^
Sounds like you're doing a wonderful job leading by example and not forcing your kids to read. I know current times bring extra challenges, and that's wonderful that your kids scored above their reading level. Happy Mother's Day! ❤️
These facts are indeed quite telling! Thank you for sharing your personal story, it is so touching! I totally agree that reading what we enjoy is a major step towards regular reading habits. Another great video!
I love this, and loved hearing about your mom. I homeschool my 14yo, and since she was little, 3PM has been our D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) time. We put away whatever work we were doing and pick up a book. I also read to her during breakfast, and still read her a bedtime story. (We’re now reading Dry, by Neal Shusterman.) I hope she’ll let me read bedtime stories up till she leaves for college, because we’re never too old. Those times reading together, or even just reading our own books in the same room, are some of our most precious times. ❤
English is my mom’s second language. She didn’t read to me but she encouraged me to read by listening to me tell her all about the books I read. I got a degree in English Literature, share my love of reading with my two daughters and now my mom likes to buddy read books that interest her.
This was great! I don't remember seeing my mom read but i know she did because i can see her table with books and her Bible. I remember my dad reading magazines and the farmers almanac and my grandparents got the Reader's Digest and i read those quite often. My mom did make sure we got to the library in the summer and we even had a bookmobile come by our (rural) house in the summer.
I love this so much. Some of my fondest memories of my mom revolve around shared books. Thanks for the important message, and for sparking those fond memories this holiday.
This video really resonated with me. Watching it, I realized that I have been a bit judgmental about the choices of books my kids (2 girls) are reading, and I have been trying to influence them to read what I deem “worthy”. Your video was eye-opening. Thank you. ❤️ Oh, and I have to find the video with your mom!
@@Johanna_readsI have the same wish as you as far as my literary competency. And, I do my best as far as being a positive example for my kids. Thanks! 😀
Love this video Johanna! MoM has been a huge influence in our love of reading 🥰 I know that you and I, as well as our other two siblings have fond memories of her reading to all 4 of us at bedtime when we were children. ❤
Love it. My mother was big reader, and I’m so glad and grateful that she was, and encouraged my reading as a kid. Of course I wouldn’t be who I am without so many aspects of my mum, but especially the reading is something I can’t begin to imagine lacking in my life. Thanks mum! ♥️
It’s so cool how the love of reading has been passed down in your family, and even the writing lessons! The stats blew my mind as well, it’s amazing exposure to reading is more important than those other factors. My family doesn’t read, but they always supported me going to the library and reading all day. It’s so cute you put her to sleep talking about books 😆 I agree you have a calming voice, but I don’t sleep in your videos!
Aw, thank you so much for these wonderful comments! I'm glad you're family is supportive of your channel. You never know, they might be interested in picking up some books thanks to you! 🥰❤️
Great message, happy mothers day! My mom is a constant book worm and she read often to us: Ludo and the Star Horse, Narnia, the Dark is Rising, the Lord of the Rings (all stories I treasure today), and I remember how surprised and trilled she was when I could read Green Eggs and Ham to her - really I think that had more to do with memorization from her many reads then general grade level reading, but at least I knew what _those_ words looked like. Then I got hooked on the goosebumps, monster junky that I was, & I had the bug. Later on I put her to sleep reading Winnie the Pooh, greatly enjoying the performance aspect to it and then being mildly offended so I wake her up in order to finish the chapter - lol I think we underestimated how much more tiring adulting could be. Actually I've recently gone back to reading to her with the whole poetic version of Tolkien's Beren and Luthian (Lord of the Rings has long been her favorite), which is a lot more fun to read aloud and share. Thanks mom, I can't imagine a world where reading isn't a joy! How much harder would school, or so many other things, have been?
I laughed out loud when you wrote: "I think we underestimated how much more tiring adulting could be." It's so true! I love these memories you shared! Wishing your mother a happy Mother's Day!
Wonderful video!!! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I owe my own love of language and books to my mother. Some of my earliest memories are of my mother reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and C.S. Lewis to my older sister and I before we fell asleep, and I taught myself to read by watching the words on the page while sitting next to her as she would read out loud to us. I feel very fortunate indeed to have a mother who read to me and who never said no when we asked for a trip to the local library. Thanks for the beautiful message.
Love this video! I don't think my mom ever read to me growing up, but she did buy me the Harry Potter books when I was 7, which is what made me fall in love with reading.
My parents didn't read much, but one of my grandmothers made it a point to gift me books to stoke a love for reading. For example, she gave me The Hobbit for my 7th birthday. Later it was Ray Bradbury or Arthur C. Clarke. She always chose the right books for my age until I was a teenager who devoured books from libraries chosen by myself. And I read those books to my younger brothers until they could read for themselves. Just recently my brother told me he has fond memories of this. We are both well in our forties now, but it left a mark

I loved the story about your mother at the heart of this video. That's so great that you are able to make continued connections through literature!
Thanks, Josh! I couldn't help but think about all those memories when I read that statistic.
I'm sure! My mother is not a big reader, but read to me as a kid, which I know fueled my early love for books.

👩🏻🏫 Whoa, what an unexpected twist to the episode - factoids and anecdotes! Absolutely fabulous 🤩
My love of reading comes from my mother. My father was more a newspaper guy, while my mother was fiction, particularly science fiction… and guess what my main genre is nowadays? Yup, 🚀
My father lightly scoffed at my reading, even asking recently if I was “still reading science fiction.” It always felt like there was a bit of dismissal and a dirth of encouragement rather than anything stronger though - just no interest from that half, so I kept to myself. I essentially had the opportunity to make my own decisions and visiting the Library just became something I did on the regular, devouring the shelves. And thus a lifelong habit was sparked.
Unfortunately I do not recollect the early days of who read to me, or how I first discovered a Library. That is just a touch too far back into the mists of yore, and I have no specific memories.
That is so neat that your mom influenced your love of that SF! That's too bad your dad wasn't on board with it, but I'm glad you felt comfortable honoring your own reading taste. Thanks for watching and sharing! ✨
I love this video topic. My mother definitely encouraged my love of reading. She is a teacher and has been a librarian too. My whole family are readers, actually. They read all the genres, fortunately. I've read fantasy since I was 8 years old. My daughter is now a reader as well. My in-laws used to make fun of me for reading to an infant, but it paid off. She could read at an 11th grade level in 1st grade. Now she's 16 and is reading all my Sanderson books. Lol.
