Honey Doo Drill Bit

  • A little different video for me. I make a special drill bit for a honey doo job. The drill itself is a spoof but the method is identical to how you would make a steel cutting tool. The electronic gearing was a collaboration between me and my friend Mr Bill. I did the mechanical work and he worked out the control scheme. The servo motor position is synchronized to the milling machine table movement via an encoder connected to the milling machine axis and is fully programmable for different helical solutions. The control is also capable of doing direct number indexes. If you have ever done high count indexing you will appreciate the ability to push a button and make your index move. I hope you enjoy the video. I had fun making it.
    All the best,
    Tom

    I once made 6 12mm diameter drills from carbide blanks that were extra long and a non catalog item. I made them on my Cincinnati Monoset . I put male centers on to start to support the end but I still had to be careful as they still wanted to chatter. Then I had to grind margins . Then I ground the drill points. A lot of work but looked beautiful
    when they were done. The Monoset will on my machine flute a maximum of a 30 degree spiral on a 1/4" diameter tool and anything in between. I rearly flute tools from scratch. Most
    of the time I use it to sharpen hog mills and repair chipped flutes on solid carbide end mills.
    It is easier to setup if the manufacturer would etch the lead on the tool .

    • @erneststorch9844
      @erneststorch9844 3 года назад

      The only two reasons it was done was as I said it was a non catalog item and it was a short run of six and not worth setting up by a CNC grinder. I and my machine can't compete with a CNC grinder. They can do it way faster and can do
      other things I can't.
