The thing people don't get about water travel is that even the smallest of boats can't just change course or stop like a land vehicle can. There's far less friction to work in your favor, so if you're going too fast or turn too late, there's a good chance your vessel won't respond in time because of the momentum carrying it on its original trajectory like a car doing a drift. It's possible they tried to avoid the collision but did too little too late.

The cars burned right in front of the steering wheel. It is never, unless you are alone, NEVER ok for no-one to be awake. That is why it is called a "watch", that's what you do.

Those who don't live in a desert, dust devils can sometimes get real nasty. They pop up suddenly out of nowhere and disappear just as fast. Think of it as a 100 deg mini tornado.

A little more info on the burning car carrier. It was a Russian operated ship called Angara, transporting used cars from Fushiki Japan to Vladivostok Russia. They were not personally owned cars, and had no belongings inside. They were being transported to Russia to be sold as used cars.

I live below Folsom Dam here in Ca. They tell us if it ever collapsed it would send a huge wave of water down the American River that would drown a lot of people. Luckily they just finished redoing the dam a few years ago. So it probably has 100 years more life in her now.

The Canadian Transportation Safety board has released it report on this.
In the simplest terms possibly the hydrodynamics of the narrow canal cause one of the vessels to lose steering control,
just as the 2 vessels were approaching to pass each other in opposite directions.
Boats, and especially ships of this size do not handle at all like a car.
In narrow waters, the depth and width of the channel create forces that effect a ship's directional control -
Traveling too fast, can exert forces that may overwhelm the ship's rudder input,
however, reducing speed also reduces the amount of rudder control -
there is a minimum speed at which a vessel loses the ability to steer.
Additionally, the only way to stop a vessel like this quickly, is to reverse the propulsion -
which has negative effects on steering, and can completely change the dynamics the ship feels from the bottom and bank.
Often when we see videos of ship collisions, what seems obvious to the untrained eye,
does not in actuality reflect what is truly occurring.

I lived right near the lift lock. Ships are so big that you could jump onto them as they pass. Only one ship at a time

@@castlekingside76 Indeed, the locks of the welland canal limit the size of what can pass beyond them. The large "Lakers" cannot pass through them.

The craziest part of tornadoes is they generally have favorable conditions for maybe half a year so it could be as many as 6 or more a day across the midwest US. The one I experienced was an unusual one because it happened in early January,

  • @kevinwilson140
    @kevinwilson140 2 года назад +4

It's actually typical for two ships in a canal to drive strait at eachother. It's the only way canals work. Ships can only navigate in the middle of the canal, if they move to one side bank effect will draw them right into the side and if one stops the same effect will draw the Ships together as they pass. So the only way to pass eachother is to drive strait at eachother and swerve off at the last second. The pressure wave is supposed to keep the Ships apart but it doesn't always work out obviously.

Cars as deck cargo - they start off talking about "Car Carriers",
but then, they show an incident with a small General Cargo Vessel carrying cars as deck cargo.
There are 2 hugely problematic problems which carrying private vehicles.
First, they have battery systems, which can be shorted out and cause a fire -
but far more hazardous, is that many of them operate on gasoline/ petrol, which is not merely highly flammable,
but can be actually explosive, especially in an enclosed space.
Car carriers are designed to mitigate these hazards.
That Cargo vessel with cars on deck?
It is likely that they couldn't legally carry cars in their cargo holds,
even if they weren't a huge waste of space (you cannot stack anything on top of a car.)
Is salt water good for vehicles?
Nope, but people park near the sea every day, and they drive through the rain constantly -
yet, somehow, that doesn't result in too many electrical fires.
That was some fairly rough weather, the ship's motion was likely a contributing factor
as well as the heavy spray - it was clear that at some point, at least some of the cars broke loose,
and started smashing into each other.
    Overall, not a good day.

A late comment. Not only can't a ship stop and turn quickly the two ships passing each other would create a current that would pull them to each other. You cannot under any circumstances think an investigation of this kind of incident. They have to prove what happened and make recommendations to stop it happening again. That takes a lot of digging.

That Tornada in China was relatively small, and not very powerful, that why you could see the speed of rotation, you were very close.
100 like that in a year in a country the size of China, yeah, that's not a real problem comparatively speaking.
Comparatively the US averages over 1200 every year - averaging roughly 3 per day.
Over 1/2 of them occur in April, May, and June.
So, roughly 200 a month during those 3 months.

The USA has an average of 1,200 tornadoes a year, compared to 100 a year, that is nothing! Texas averages 155 a year by itself, with Kansas coming in second at 96. Compare the size of Kansas to China - Kansas has 82,277 square miles, Texas has 268,820 square miles and China has 3.71 million square miles. Give you some perspective.

Cars once set on fire won’t go out as they need a special foam to stop the burn. You see the wall between the engine and the cabin is pure Magnesium and once it starts to burn there is no stopping it. Magnesium once it starts to burn creates its own oxygen so it simply creates more oxygen in itself. You dump a burning car in a pool it won’t stop burning. The only way to stop it is to use a special foam that insert atoms of carbon to stop the burn. Or the mag burns itself out when it finally runs out of fuel.

    • @sleepyburr

Not sure how reliable the channel is, but the narrator mentioned that people already owned these cars and lost personal items that were in them at the time. He made it sound like these weren't necessarily new but being shipped somewhere by their owners to be retrieved at a later date? Not sure how common that is or if it's an accurate description of the situation, but it's possible that it's a domestic freight situation rather than an export to somewhere else.

    • @LancerX916

Russia does have a car maker. They probably export them to eastern countries. This was probably a mix of new cars below and a ferry on top to maximize profits.
