    Video Content & Transcription:
Louis Roederer is a Champagne maker and a Champagne house based in the city of Reims in the heart of the Champagne wine region of France.
Louis Roederer is extremely well known thanks to its iconic and flagship Champagne sparkling wine called Cristal.
The house itself and the business were started in the late 18th Century, in 1776 to be precise, but Louis Roederer, the man and entrepreneur, inherited it in 1833 and renamed it after himself, as one does. He went on to buy some Grand Cru vineyard sites.
Roederer created the Cristal Champagne specifically for the Russian Tsar Alexander II. Alexander was notoriously paranoid and afraid of being poisoned or assassinated, so the bottle of Cristal had to be clear and flat-bottomed to prevent any explosives to be hidden in it. And of course the wine had to be excellent.
Louis Roederer now owns about 240 hectares of vineyards (or 600 acres) around the Champagne region in the Montagne de Reims, the Marne Valley and the Côte des Blancs, and makes wines with a majority of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with small proportions of Pinot Meunier.
If you look at the different Champagne wines that Louis Roederer: the standard Louis Roederer non-vintage cuvee is called the Brut Premier. But they make another non-vintage cuvee that is called carte Blanche. Both these non-vintage cuvees are made with 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier,
The carte Blanche has a 5% that is matured in oak tuns. Louis Roederer also makes vintage wines. Wines made from grapes sourced from a single year or the millésime, or the vintage on the label. You can probably see here, like vintage 2009. Beautiful rosé vintage. Look at the color of this bottle! And they also make a vintage Blanc de Blancs so 100% Chardonnay grapes. Grand cru grapes I believe. One of the signature vintage cuvées by Louis Roederer. But of course the iconic wine, the prestige cuvee by Louis Roederer is Cristal. A vintage cuvee, "a wine of pure pleasure and sophiticated, gastronimic wine,. Cristal is both powerful and delicate, combining subtly... humm subtlety and precision." Ah, that's just beautiful! Yeah, I've never tried it but I wish I did. I'm sure it's actually pretty good!? They also make a Cristal rosé, so the rosé version of Cristal which I'm sure is delicious as well. They also make what they Cristal Vinotheque, so aged bottles of Cristal. You can see here it's vintage 1996. So they age those Champagnes for you in the cellar for 20, 25, 30 years, and then they release it to you. So those wines have acquired extremely smooth texture, deep complexity as well. They do this for the rosé as well. If you're after, if you got enough $$ to buy yourself some of those wines, you can get in touch with the producer and try to buy yourself some Vinotheque Cristal. that should be really really fantastic experience. They have also made what Louis Roederer has called, how do they call it? The Medallion bottle. This is a bottle that has been hand-crafted with some sort of jewelry metal structure. I believe this is one of THE most expensive Champagne wines in the whole world! I made a video about this particular wine that you can go and find out on my channel. And they've also developed a Brut Nature, so a very dry vintage Champagne developed with French designer Philippe Stark as you can see. This one is an excellent wine. I made a video reviewing and tasting this wine that you can go and check out on this channel as well. So those are the wines made by Louis Roederer.
And a quick word on Louis Roederer and Cristal in particular, when Jay-Z considered some comments made by Louis Roederer’s boss as racist, starting a controversy among the hip-hop community in the US and a boycott of the brand. Jay-Z went on to create his own brand of Champagne instead of drinking Cristal, he successfully started Armand de Brignac with the Cattier Champagne house and made of Ace of Spades Champagne a huge commercial hit.

Recently L.R. had a tasting of their lineup, N.V., Vintage, Vintage B d B, Vintage Rose, and Crystal for the unheard price of $5? Oh my, you know I went for that. Company rep poured, so it was done right. How many tasting have I attended where the champagne was flat or too warm?, too many. Whole lineup was excellent and I bought the Vintage Rose which I really enjoyed. I have had it before and it did not disappoint. In the past, the wines have been too green applely for me, but not now, the result of some malo being used or more ageing, warmer weather? Should have asked, but the lady was busy. Had tasting of Crystal once before and I was impressed with its finesse. Vintage Roederer more about power, which is just great too. BTW, family and wine maker do not drink the Crystal, saving it for customers they say. What a family. Also like Roederer Estate from Cal. Always polite and helpful when you call them, unlike some other sparkling houses! Lay the Estate brut down for a year and you may be rewarded greatly for an inexpensive alt. I did that last year by omission and found it to be excellent. Doing the same this year for science experiment. Science and Art meet at Champagne JCaff. Oh my! P.S. As I understand the hip hop thing, L.R. said they did not need the P.R. from that and hence the boycott. Which really doesn't matter because Cristal is always on allocation, it always sells out. I'm boycotting Armand, the price is too high for what it's worth IMHO. Thanks for videos. J

thanks J for sharing all this insight. Wish i could try more of Roederer's Champagnes. As I say in the video, only tried the Brut Nature by Philippe Stark which was pretty good. That's one that was given to me by a friend. I asked Roederer in Champagne for samples, as most producers would happily share some with me for the blog and the videos, and the social media audience. They said they would get back to me but never did. Champagne houses can be a strange beast, quite secretive and not very open sometimes unless. I mean, I don't know exactly for Roederer, but I just haven't heard back. I tried Roederer Estate a few times and really enjoyed it. I liked the precision and the delicate smokiness. That would be a wonderful place to visit, the Anderson valley, right? Have you been?

@@RUclipsJulien Welcome, Julien. Haven't been to R.E., it's a longer drive up north than I've done. I will be attending Le Grand Champagne Tasting at Winesellar and Brasserie next month. They have two option. less expensive includes 15+ champagnes, including Pierre Peters, Bollinger and for extra $, Dom P., Ruinart, Taittinger Comtes, V. Clicquot Le Grande Dame, & Krug G.C.. Oh my! I will be boring you with my impressions. Meanwhile I must go into training for this, pushups, pull ups, sit ups. Just kidding, but this event can be overwhelming. BTW, I have an idea when you visit, I call it the Ultimate, Ultimate tasting--Pierre Peters Les Chetillons, Krug's Clos du Mesnil and Launois' Quartz(also 100% Chetillons single vineyard) (all 3 blanc de blanc all single vineyard) vrs. Philiponnat Clos des Goisses, Krug's Clos d'Ambonnay and Bollinger's Vieilles Vignes Francaises (all blanc de noir and all single vineyards except Bolly's VVF which is from 3 walled vineyards never attacked by phylloxera. This is The Dream Team. Well, I can always dream. P.S. Have had Launois, it's bottled at less pressure, but you wouldn't notice it. Very reasonable $ too. Best, John

Ive had Clos des Goisses, and the clos at Billecart Salmon. What's the name again? The only two clos I've had during an amazing week in Champagne. Was hosted by Charles Philipponat, great experience

@@RUclipsJulien Only have had the Grande Cuvee, at several tastings and two bottles. Very distinctive, I think I could pick it out blind. Lot of different spices on the taste. Other vintage Krug not available locally. Probably too $$$ for my blood.
