Thank you Professor Stacy for the lecture. It really helped to clear some confusion. I am an online student at the University of Wisconsin so I don't get a lot of lectures to teach me. I rely heavily on RUclips for people just like you who take a few minutes out of their day to make an educational video. Thank you, it was very helpful.
Thanks for this dude. Love theatre, but was feeling very distracted as I had to watch a community college production of this play here on RUclips. Just didn't grab me, and I didn't really take anything in. Clicked your video, and it's just lovely. I get it now, and can piece together what happened. Very universally significant play. Love it.
The first moral play that I can remember was my life as Dr. Jean Piaget's loss of the KIngdomcom as was lost by Naustradamus's malpracticing surrealisms.
There is a whole aspect of this play that is not mentioned in this lecture: educating the masses in the steps that the Church requires to achieve salvation. As presented in this lecture, the process seems almost benign, involving some good deeds. But in order to get into heaven, according to the play's religious teachings, Everyman--meaning you and I--must do a number of things, including confession and whipping himself. In short, this play explains that allegiance to the Church and its teachings is the only way into God's mercy. Otherwise, hell and damnation are Everyman's reward for a life ill-spent. To an uneducated public, Everyman was probably a terrifying experience meant to reinforce the Church's place between humankind's sins and a pathway to heaven. Everyman reminds me of the sermon Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God with each person dangling over hell fires by a thin thread. And while the play doesn't get that extreme, it's fairly close.
That is very interesting and good point, I have also thought about the play Everyman when I first encountered Edwards' "Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God".
Actually , there were 3 types of plays. 1-the mystery play , often depicting scenes from the Bible, nativity, resurrection etc. 2- miracle play- often depicting saints and their actions 3-the morality play, depicting the fight between Good and Evil, God and Satan, Vice and Virtue for the human soul. It has 2 paradoxes: a-one cannot achieve salvation on their own strength, only through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ , but is judged on his good deeds B- even though Christ died for the sins of ALL , only members of his church may receive salvation . Also, who and why is saved remains a mystery
Thanks. I have sometimes had students write their own morality plays titled "Everystudent" to see what virtue and vice characters they develop. "Procrastination" and "Partytime" often appear.
Unfortunately, even our "good deeds" cannot and do not save us, nor "accompany us" to the grave! But God promises to remember true "good works" done in saving Faith - yes! God also says that our tithes and offereings given in Faith "go ahead" of us, and the people saved because of the Church's work through them will greet us in eternity! I thought you were going to say that the only Person (not thing) willing to go with us into the grave was Jesus Christ. In effect, through Baptism into Christ, we have "already died to sin" and "risen to new life in Christ!" This "new creature" which we must become in order to be saved is worked by God Himself! But then again, this "morality play" was written well before Dr. Martin Luther rediscovered the Gospel! What is needed is a second play - a "miracle play" - where we learn that we are saved by Grace, through Faith, and that not of ourselves - it is a total, free GIFT of God in Christ! :)

Thank you! Just a friendly reminder that good works won’t get you into Heaven, that’s why Jesus died for us❤ (Ephesians 2:9)✝️
