Well Phil!!! If this piece does not show your determination to MAKE something positive happen then nothing will. When you started working on the bottom I was sure you would not get a successful 'turn' out of this 'rotted mess of Maple Burl'. Should never have allowed myself to think that when this piece was in your hands & so it proved to be. Phil, I was quite literally amazed at the finished piece & quite happily would have settled for it to be a wall hanging & it would not have lost any of its appeal. Then I see that you have 'saved it' but I can't find the subsequent video. I do hope I stumble upon it soon. Beautiful piece of 'work' mate, or should I say 'love'. I never tire of watching your videos. Keep up the fantastic work because you are an inspiration. Cheers, Don
Failures are just part of living. You did what you could to prevent what happened, but the piece had other ideas. 😉🤷♀️ Now on to watching the fix. Looking forward to it.
Dave here, at Calmwood Creations. You asked, here's the backstory: I am not certain what flavor of ornamental maple this is, was told "Japanese" by the guy who dumped the concave pieces in my driveway (totally cool! I showed him where). The tree was on abandoned property, top broken and all the heartwood rotted out. Hollow trunk with living sapwood continuing to grow but only able to grow into itself (i know, sounds strange-- read on), thus burl-like figure with very little of the darker, denser heartwood. This piece did have some remnants of heartwood burl (darker swirls), but the rest is sapwood burr (puts out a lot of suckers which fail, but does make beautiful figure). A very strangely shaped piece and I've got a couple more just like it which I'm saving for something, whatever. This piece you may call a failed bowl/dish, and yet I feel certain you will not find very many in agreement with you! Very cool dish/bowl/wall hanging! Cool, man! 😎
You Always turn out the nicest things Phil! Not a mistake at all! Notes to go watch video on you fixing perfection! Lol! I myself, love it as is! Onto part 2!🥰
Thank You Phil ( thank you Dave Calmwood Creations ) Wow Phil hand sawing!! 2 big thumbs up 4 you !!! This was a fun one Phil..."To err is human, to forgive divine" I am sure your public will forgive the balance...Wonderful FUN Phil and I look forward to your next show !!!!!...TM
What a beautiful piece Phil! To bad there was such a lot of punky wood hidden. But like always, you made a beauty out of it even if it's "out of balance"
No "real" failure here...you ended up showing what this piece of wood had to offer. Resolve the foot issue and you have a very attractive live edge platter. I've seen most of your videos and know that you know you can't always decide ahead of time what a piece of wood will become after turning. Much of the time you have to open up the wood on the lathe in order to see what it offers. The turner's job is to expose what the wood has to offer...and to that end, mission accomplished. Another great job on a very tricky piece of wood.
Dave, here, at Calmwood Creations. My favorite quote about woodturning came from a woodworking advice forum tagline and is now my "Shop Motto": "I'm a woodturner-- I don't create beauty, I reveal it!"
I was determined not to miss this one Phil. What a magnificent piece of Maple Burl !! Look forward to seeing your “fix” tomorrow on U.K. Independence Day 🇬🇧. All the very best my friend. Geof
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop The European Union, following 3 1/2 years of political wrangling. Over 40 years of being under their control through trade, their judiciary & political alignment we will be severing the knot that’s caused so much division over Brexit. Time for us to do free trade deals with the likes of the USA 🇺🇸, Canada, Australia, New Zealand & many more countries who want to do business with us. During our membership of the “EU Club”/ Federation we have paid in (nett) over 200 Billion £ Sterling. Our manufacturing has been destroyed, our fishing waters raped by factory ships, decimating our fishermen’s livelihoods ......... I could go on for hours. From 11,00 o’clock on 31st January 2020 we take back our Sovereignty, get the investments that are queuing up to bring back manufacturing & about time . I’m hopeful that we have our own Trump in Boris Johnson & look forward to a very bright future, especially with the stopping of freedom of movement into the U.K. 🇬🇧 of people who have no skills to offer.
@@geofo60 Ah, yes, ok, I've been following this but somehow I thought it was scheduled for the Spring time. Sheesh, tomorrow! Good for you! It's about time you had a chance to advance your fortunes! I do think Boris will do well if given the opportunity. It's good to know he has your support and I assume that of at least half the population. Jolly good!
Hi Phil, If my successes turned out as lovely as this "Failure" I would sleep a very happy man every night. Looking forward to the "Fix" tomorrow. Cheers, Huw. PS Thank you for continuing to support my channel I really appreciate it. Huw
Way to accept the challenge! You definitely went way out on a rotten limb and pulled off what the wood called for. Now I've got to find some fallow lots and look for rotten wood! Probably gonna bite off more than I can chew! Thanks for the inspiration. Good thing I've got decent safety equipment as I've only been turning for about nine months except for one piece in 1968.
Howdy, Manny-- Dave here, Calmwood Creations. Free wood makes the best turnings for me. If someone cuts down a tree and leaves gnarly rounds at the curb free for the taking, they're nomally the ones not easy to split with a maul and wedge, but that is perfect for the woodturner who's a bit handy with a chainsaw. Those sections are where the best figure is. I've actually never felled a whole tree myself, but do I follow the sound of chainsaws to the source. Normally, the crew will be amenable and will let you pick and choose. What they give to you they won't have to haul off to disposal. Some will help load your heavy choices in your vehicle, even. Good luck as you progress in your craft; that and perseverance will reward you!
Failure? Hardly. A beautiful piece of wood turned and finished. We can only do what we can do. The only way to have failed was to not complete what you started. Well done, Phil.
Hello Phill. Lar from Canada 🇨🇦. That turned out great . You started with a chunk of rot, and made a nice platter . Up here we call that MANITOBA MAPLE. I will send you a pic of a piece I did.
What a beauty of a bowl, Phil , your videos are always an inspiration ! Such wood is rare to find. I'll try to, maybe a treefelling company, I'm working sometimes with can save some burls for me. Look foreward to that.
Beautiful bowl/platter. I agree with Robert Keyes in his comment below that you could make a stand to keep it in balance. I note that you always wear your face shield. | do too but just yesterday I took mine off momentarily as I wanted to see more clearly how a new tool was cutting. I got a catch and a kickback which broke my specs :-).
Thanks again for a great video and a beautiful piece of wood. I used to save your videos for last, but I can't anymore. I look forward to them too much and they are always entertaining and educational. (Sometimes they teach me what not to do, lol) Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into providing for us. I appreciate you.
Nothing wrong with a wall hanging. Burls are always fascinating. I've seen some interesting burls in pines in Alaska and hope to obtain one sometime. Nice turning control. The wide scraper is a bomber tool...thanks.
Hello Phil, when you showed us the piece of tree that you were going to work on, I immediately new here comes another masterpiece. It is just so awesome. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Phil, Beautiful piece. You might try PC-Petrifier Wood Hardener (from Amazon, about 1/3 the cost of MinWax wood hardener, and as best I can tell, just as good). It is milky, but dries clear. I simply pour it onto punky wood, or soak the punky part with it. It adds extra time to the project, but I have saved many inches of wood with it.
Your videos are my favorites. You explain everything so well, from the “technical” stuff to your vision of what the piece wants to be. I’m learning so much! Thanks for posting.
Hi Phil a beautiful piece, not a failure. Look forward to seeing how you correct the balance problem it will make for another enjoyable video challenge. Tony
Wonderful! to balance it you could drill a tiny hole on the lighter side, maybe more, and then fill them with lead shot, then topping off the holes with wood fill. I think it is gorgeous, well worth keeping.
Ones again another gorgeous piece. Due to your instructive videos, I have decided to start woodturning and today I made my first piece but not as good as yours. Thank you for your inspiring videos. Hopefully I can reach your level of excellence. ❤️👍🏼
I kept waiting for something horrible to happen. Then we see the finished product and it's beautiful as usual. How is that a failure? Oooooohhhhh! I did laugh a little. Sorry, Mr. Anderson.
FAILURE!!??? Oh man, Phil, I would love to have a few failures like that!! Absolutely gorgeous, my friend!! Thanks for sharing! 👍👍👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Take care, .....Gord
Before you even started talking I thought to myself, here’s another Phil piece of wood. Then as you showed it I wondered how you were going to work around the rot. But you did! I’m sure one of your viewers or fellow woodworkers will have a solution to the balance issue. I think it’s a lovely creation 💕
Phil, I am a 70 year old retired male just starting to turn. Could you please showa little more detail on starting and maintaining hollowing bowls. I really enjoy your approach and philosophy towards wood. Thank you very much. Dan, I'm Hilo Farms
I'd love to help, Dan, but I'm not sure what you are asking. "Starting and maintaining hollowing bowls." I guess I feel like I show that in every video so you must be asking something else. Please clarify and I'll see what I can do. Thank you for watching and commenting! Phil
You may stop at 'beautiful' Phil. It's totally unique artistry. So once again you've done it... gorgeous. I do look forward to your videos especially because you don't change the natural lines, shape or anything someone would consider a flaw in the piece you're turning... Thanks for the beauty you share!!
Well Phil what’s wrong with a wall hanging? I see them all the time. You were presented with quite a challenge and I think coming out with a wall hanging is darn good. With that much rot I surprised you came out with what you did. So, buy us a wall hanging apparatus and hang her high. Thanks for sharing!
It might be a bit tipsy but I think it is a beauty! You could just put all the M&M's on one side? I really like the area the shorted side how it blends into the burled area. Phil when I saw Failure I was thinking the worst...but I think it is pretty darn nice. I am still trying to edit my double failure. I think the piece will be nice but wow...trouble all the way to the end. You got rid of all the not so good wood and left the pretty stuff. Take care buddy! Gary
HA! M&M's is what I was thinking, too, Gary! TV food! Actually, I fixed it! The follow-up video will go live tomorrow morning. Thank you, my friend! Looking forward to seeing you new video! Phil
I LIKE THIS BOWL VERY MUCH. I THINK YOU COULD MAKE ABASE TO MOUNT IT ON THAT WOULD -BE OFFSET TO THE BOWL BY USING THE MORTISE. ALITTLE CREATIVITY THATS ALL. KEEP UP THE GOOD TURNINGS!
That is not a failure you did what you could do with the material you had. What you got is what was there to have. The result is a beautiful turning, definatley not a wall hanger. That is piece to display prominently
Failure or not, and I don't consider it one, that is a beautiful finished piece Phil, I've been racking my brain for ways to shift the weight balance but they're all too invasive to the piece, build it a little wedge to sit on under the heavy side? Or you could turn a base of say 5 inches, with a tenon that exactly fits your recess, if you use a contrasting wood, it'll look like you meant it from the beginning 😁 All the best, Will
Thanks for the laugh Phil.... failure? Not really. I have a silver fruit bowl from Paul Revere’s original silver works worth a lot, that sits just like that... good job, very nice.
Not a failure, just unfinished. Will the next step be sanding on the belt sander to reduce the foot to flat? Or add a base/stand ring to support the beautiful shallow bowl? Or both in the form of a Calabash round bottom setting on a ring of darker wood? Can’t wait to see what you decide to do. I know you will not be happy with it as a tipsy wall piece!!!
So much simpler than all that, Valerie. Short video in the morning. I don't know why I didn't see it while I was turning this. Sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees, I guess. Phil
A strong sense of humor is of infinite value.
No doubt about it, Victor!
If just 1 person likes or even loves your work it cannot be called a failure. I love it.
Thank you, Lyle!
Phil
You had me in tears laughing with your comment “I hope I don’t run out of hole before I run out of wood”. Love it Phil.
Phil, you're a wizard! From such a blank to make beauty!!!!!!! Ты маг!!!!
Thank you, Ivan!
Phil

Hi Phil...failure or not that is still a very beautiful bowl...All the best.....Andy
I wouldn't call it a failure...it is so gorgeous!
It'll be better tomorrow, Carol. Thank you!
Phil
Failures are just part of living. You did what you could to prevent what happened, but the piece had other ideas. 😉🤷♀️ Now on to watching the fix. Looking forward to it.
By now you've probably seen the easy fix, Vicki. I don't know why I couldn't see it at the time. Easy, peasy! Thank you for watching! 😊
Instead a thought??? If you still have it, you might turn a 'wee' base to set it on? The grain is lovely.
Thank you, Chuck
Well, thanks, Chuck. The title does say "Fix is Coming" and it did with the next video! 😀

HA! I knew you would appreciate the hand sawing, Tuffy! Took me a half hour to regain my strength! See you in the morning, my friend!

Still beautiful even if it's a wall hanger great work again
What a beautiful piece Phil! To bad there was such a lot of punky wood hidden. But like always, you made a beauty out of it even if it's "out of balance"

It turned out beautifully Phil! I guess you picked the right piece of wood as usual. It would look great on a wire plate rack up on a shelf.

Thank you so much, Larry!
Wonderful! to balance it you could drill a tiny hole on the lighter side, maybe more, and then fill them with lead shot, then topping off the holes with wood fill. I think it is gorgeous, well worth keeping.
What a wonderfully gorgeous failure. You did it again dear friend, from firewood to fabulous and rot to a rating of 10/10. Thank you so much Phil.
Very nice Phil

Laughter is good for the soul, Steven! LOL!

I wish my failures looked like that. It is beautiful. And if you turn it over, and put the long bark inclusion at the bottom, you can see a face.
I had to go look, Douglas. I do see the two eyes and mouth. You're right! Thank you!
Phil
What failure that looks awesome Phil. Can't wheat to see more videos.
Another beauty, Phil. That would look great on a table in a plate holder.
Hi Phil,
That is one of the prettiest failures I have ever seen!
Best regards

I'd love to help, Dan, but I'm not sure what you are asking. "Starting and maintaining hollowing bowls." I guess I feel like I show that in every video so you must be asking something else. Please clarify and I'll see what I can do. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Phil
Awsome work you have the patience of Job
Phil i love that
Well done Phil. just a lovelly piece. Years ago I was into clock making and I think this would lend itself to that, just a thought. Cheers John
Yes, it probably could make a great clock face, John. But, I fixed it and now it's a bowl again. Video in the morning.
Phil
A very nice failure Phil, well done.

Thank you for the suggestion, Jerry! I just fixed it and the follow-up video will be posted tomorrow morning.

That is not a failure you did what you could do with the material you had. What you got is what was there to have. The result is a beautiful turning, definatley not a wall hanger. That is piece to display prominently
Thank you very much, Michael! I fixed it, newer video released today.
Phil
It's special. I think it resembles a meteor crater.
It does, Houston. Thank you!
Phil
😂 Now I know why it's a Beautiful Failure ❤😂
I fixed it! 😄
Превосходно! 👍
Failure or not, and I don't consider it one, that is a beautiful finished piece Phil, I've been racking my brain for ways to shift the weight balance but they're all too invasive to the piece, build it a little wedge to sit on under the heavy side? Or you could turn a base of say 5 inches, with a tenon that exactly fits your recess, if you use a contrasting wood, it'll look like you meant it from the beginning 😁 All the best, Will
Thanks for the great suggestions, Will. I fixed it! New video out today.
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop awesome I look forward to watching it!
Thanks for the laugh Phil.... failure? Not really. I have a silver fruit bowl from Paul Revere’s original silver works worth a lot, that sits just like that... good job, very nice.
HA! Me and old Paul have something in common! LOL! Yeah, I'll bet yours is worth quite a bit more than mine! Thank you, Russ!
Phil
I like it!!!!
cut a little plug on the bottom , stuff in some lead shot on the light side, plug it up and sand it a bit again and it will sit up
It's fixed, Sam! See new video released today.
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I saw. Good solution. Its a very pretty bowl
Hey Phil I turned out to be a fantastic piece how about making a pedestal just for that to sit on
I fixed it, Gary. New video out today. But that's a good suggestion for some other piece.
Phil
Hi Phil I've used pedestals on a few bowls and it made quite a difference on your type of work emerging pedestal would be fantastic

Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop I will be watching!
Very nice...I have one of those , wont stand up Bowls...lol
My first but probably more to follow, Steve. LOL!
Phil
It's not a failure. It's a rescue. It sits on edge like a seashell.
😊
