    Summary
    1. Gameplay
    2. Setting of the world(build upon what already exist do not make completely strange, audience should easily grasp)
    3. Production value and upgrading technology(animation, sound, fx, lightning, etc)
    4. Right Timing
    5. Grand Story
    6. Strong Marketing
    If your IP is too weird or strange then that makes no sense to players(eg, Vikings in moon fighting the alien)
    Crosscheck yourself Can the IP you're designing fit within last 5 or 10 years released videogames or films(story, environment, technology, etc)

    I love your first few videos where you were explaining your techniques to achieve fantastic results. I am a retired guy of + 60 yrs old, and don't need to find a job in the creative design industry, but I simply love to do digital painting for my own sake. I don't sell anything, my "arts" are simply standing on my desktop for me to admire.
    Are you thinking of sharing other "painting" techniques soon?
    Thanks!

    Thank you so much Feng!
    I do not know if you're going to approach the gameplay theme, but for me is as important as the IP (I do not know how it works in the industry? 50% -50%?)
    Medal of Honor is a great IP and in my opinion Medal of Honor Airborne was one of the best in the kind. The fact that we can jump from a plane and land wherever we want, it makes you take a different experience everytime. In this case it is not only the IP, in this case the guys from EA, was beyond what is normal, they challenged developers and created the best of the "Medal of Honor". Today I still want to play, because it is really well designed. It is not normal to see this kind of approach, which is a shame. Even today, FPS games have a very definite path wich we must follow, (except for some games). Perhaps the IP is what makes us buy and gameplay is what makes us keep playing ..! Thanks again for this Podcast ..!

    Have to say, I know your not meant to draw to much inspiration directly from games, since they are already products, but darks souls' design overall is amazing. This isn't just from a fan perspective, I just love the very niche art direction this game has yet somehow still manages to appeal to the general market; also scores bonus points for integrating story and narrative with both creature and enviromental design.

    Hi, Feng!
    Yet again very informative video. Every time I see one of Your videos I learn something new, that just proves that I need to practize, practize... And even more, those are not just thoughts or basic facts, it can be easly seen when someone is passionate about things they do, they use the same words, but the weight is different.
    Nevertheless, I have one question that bugs me - what makes drawing even sketch alive?! Like for some of my drawings, there is some story behind it, perspective is in place, vanishing point may be aplied, but still, some of my drawings lacks life...
    I really hope, that You could share Your thoughts about it or even mention it in some video (of course, if You haven't already did it)! I am really looking forward to this answer, maybe others have some ideas, thoughts which could be shared?

    I believe the second IP is called 仙劍奇俠傳 (Chinese Paladin), this series is very popular between China and Taiwan.

  • @MonstersByMax
    @MonstersByMax 8 лет назад

    My favorite videogame IPs are Monster Hunter, Dark Souls/Bloodbourne, Pokemon and The Isle (an indie title, but the design by Rodrigo Vega is brillant and original), because they help me find new ways of approaching creature design. I often let reference limit my designs too much and make them less cool in the process. Thinking of how much success these IPs had with stylized characters helps me overcome the fear of making an unrealistic design and allowing myself to change things that improve the design even if they aren't scientifically accurate (Vertebrates with six limbs, changing the position of mouths, eyes, claws etc.). It can sometimes hurt the immersion if players instantly recognize traits from other animals in a creature. You want them to think "Wow a dragon" not "a generic Monitor lizard with bat wings and goat horns". Ofcourse there's nothing wrong with chimeric hybrids, but unless I want them to be recognized as a hybrid I want to make sure I blend the creatures well enough/combine enough of them.

    I have a question. Is it possible to make a profit by developing conceptual art in series, license it and sell it to companies or clients? Let's take stock images for example. Photographers sell licensed photos to the public. Is it possible to do the same for concept art?

    I wonder what's Feng's opinion on artists like Moebius. Who made up their worlds absolutely without compromise.

    • @brandonshorter9228
      @brandonshorter9228 8 лет назад

      I Think he's not against creativity per say he's frame the videos ( He's specifically talking about like getting a job in the current industry ) And I am not a concept artist nor want to be one really. (I'd jump off a bridge if I had to work for call of duty which means most likely you'll be working for americans ) but what he's saying is something like this , Like I look up Moebius art it wildy creative...but a City still is identifyable a city you know lol.. it a very unique city but still a city , Clothing still kinda behave like clothing even though it unique clothing . Weapons look kinda like weapons . Flying birds still look like flying birds . (For example you think scfi weapon could take any shape .. yet by using a Gun I instantly tell someone it a gun you know ? , Opposed to an amorphous sphere , a sphere could work maybe it shifts and turns into daggers , but it still based on a known weapon . rather than completely alien . Think that pretty much all still based on some kind of core Template . . It also is a unique fully developed world with an internal logic . that kinda setup the expectation from the audience , rather than just taking like Vampires and turning them into transformers , so one generic concept into another very generic concepts . The reason people tend to react badly to the Vampire = Transformation is it just 2 separate thing that worked on there own and just randomly mixing them making vampire transformers ,like why would a Vampire be a transformer ? would they drink oil lol etc. so basically use subconscious templates .

From Japan: Shadow of the Colossus (looking forward to The Last Guardian. My Favorite IPs : Deus Ex , Star Wars , ARMA , Wing Commander/ Star Citizen , Fallout, Assassin's Creed, Megaman, Thief , System Shock, The Long Dark, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, X-Com.
    Seriously though, there are so many cool IPs out there its hard to list them all.
    A personal note about Blizzard IPs: I used to really like these and I still think some of their designs are really cool (even though heavily inspired by the Warhammer IP), but overall I don't like the whimsical direction they gave to it in recent years. I think Diablo is the favorite IP simply because it is the only one whose visual theme wasn't tainted by Blizzard's cartoon whimsy style.

    A viking that kills a butterfly, that sounds almost like a frazetta painting!
    And i feel that the new dark souls has very strange design, same goes for Bloodborne, i also guess they are a bit of "niche" games, but still, they have great design in my opinion.
    Would rather see you talk about games YOU LIKE, or a game that YOU might want to design, that would be really helpful!

  • @megoose.tattoos

    My favorite game is actually Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and it has anything but bad gameplay. Feng might not have worded this well and meant that it isn't as marketable as Diablo for example. It is one of the best true RPGs, where you actually roleplay instead of just slaying monsters.
    My other favorite franchises are Deus Ex and Fallout (excluding Fallout 4), both of which have fantastic and unique worlds.

  • @griffingfx

    What are IP'S? Should probably know tbh :D

    • @jeanpaulrutabairo9761
      @jeanpaulrutabairo9761 8 лет назад +6

      Intellectual property(ip). This basically means ideas or non physical things someone owns the rights to. If I were to make a video game then I own it's IP, I can then do what ever I want to or with it. However if I was to sell the IP to let's say EA, then EA owns the IP and they can do whatever they want with it. Examples of IPs ( Batman, call of duty, tomb raider, the witcher, uncharted, halo, so on and so on.

    • @griffingfx
      @griffingfx 8 лет назад

      +Jean Paul Rutabairo still a little confused? Is it basically the story / idea behind the hame

    • @jeanpaulrutabairo9761
      @jeanpaulrutabairo9761 8 лет назад +6

      +Griffin GFX Yes, an ip is an ideas or franchise like halo or call of duty that can be owned. Bought and sold. The best example I can think of is star wars. George lucas came up with the idea for star wars made 6 movies and then sold it to Disney. Now disney owns star wars and just released a movie and is planning to make a lot more movies. George lucas sold star wars' ip for $4 billion and can no longer make any more money off of star wars. Not from the movies, cartoons, merch, or video games.

  • @BlazeDoctor
    @BlazeDoctor 8 лет назад +1

    I have to disagree with you Feng about how you say that Mixing stuff together and coming up with new design is weird. With everything of course you need a certain balance. You mentionned at the beggining that a mix of a hole bunch of different worlds (vampires viking etc..) is just way out there, on that I agree. But my point is, when you JUST look at a design and you simply say ¨I don´t get it ``and the guy actually has a concreate story/background behind his work, maybe from a marketing view point it´s too different so it´s not going to sell. But from a design point of view being different by making something that is fresh and original is just way more innovating then just trying to make something that can exist in something that alrdy exists.

    • @ChrisReyCap
      @ChrisReyCap 8 лет назад

      I agree with you that something "out there" can be a great design but they often fit into the niche market and Feng suggests that you initially stay away from that because that is not what sells in the market.
      By making things a little more grounded, companies can see your "safe" side since they find that hiring a junior artist is already risky from the beginning. They want someone who can do the work they want

    • @ilgoth9393
      @ilgoth9393 8 лет назад

      It's all from the perspective of concept artist, who works for companys of today.
      You cant do too weird and mix existing things to come up with something new all the time. Companies arent looking for that. And that is Feng's point - at least don't do it in your portfolio.

    It's a bit strange to say Elder Scrolls isn't weird and then say hollowed out monsters as transport is weird. That is exactly what the fast travel system of Morrowind is. Black Marsh even has transparent bugs that swim in mud as fast travel.
    TES is weird af.

    • @phantomapprentice6749
      @phantomapprentice6749 8 лет назад

      +UziIdiot I actually thought TES was plenty weird, from Oversized flying Fleas people ride on to protagonists that pretty much burp as a superpower. Still for all its Bizarreness you got to admit that TES was still a cohesive world with its own logical rules that take the fantasy we know and adding on to it and changing some of it.

    Those IPS are nothing compared to the greatest IP of all time. Lasting millenniums and contributed to by the greatest artists across time including gerome, Michael Angelo and many more. Surviving and still thriving today is the greatest IP OF THEM ALL: Jesus.

      +Martin Saur Yes Gothic, it's my favorite IP it shows a hard world with tough persons, having pretty rough dialogs with the special spice in it. I've played it primarily because of its IP (even if it's a small game with not that huge amount of marketing). Even Gothic 4 Arcania had still the good old IP but crushed it with its gameplay, what a pity.
