While I'll miss the big sprawling episodes with multiple stories in parallel, this smaller scale structure feels really great and getting an episode all about inventor Paul is awesome.
Honestly, rare appearances of Inventor Paul is probably what keeps me watching their content for as long as I have. Sure, I find the other stuff fun too, especially the crapshoots (krog!), but there are plenty of stuff I enjoy that I stop consuming simply because im so lazy that keeping caught up is too much of a hassle (and once I have fallen too far behind, marathoning is too).
I feel that this was more an extended Crapshot than a true Commodore Hustle. Commodore Hustle was usually about life, this was about a gimmick like a Crapshot and just extended it. I still liked it, but I hope they don't abandon the long form real life version.
Let me explain why it feels like a crapshoot. Crapshooters are basically the condensed form of the old weekly sketches which were similarly gimmick based but longer and more in depth. Way back in the earlier years of lrr, some of those sketches starred the cast playing fictional versions of themselves (e.g. classics like son of a b**** and these us playing us videos inspired hustle. However when hustle spun off it changed from typical sketch comedy to a more sitcom style. When they announced the new hustle format, they explicitly compared it to the proto-hustle us playing us. The writing style has sort of doubled back on itself.
This feels like an episode of a show that focuses on a minor character and fleshes out them and makes you care about that character a lot more. Even though Paul isn't a minor character it really felt like it made him much more of a real character in the cH universe. Given that Paul is probably my favorite character I strongly approve of this hustle.
This new shooting structure is brilliant. Tighter stories, greater depth, superior Hustle. Also, Graham's delivery of "Mind-controlling shades of paint" proved to me that falling out of your chair doesn't have to be a bad thing.
As someone striving to write for a living, it depends on the intended trajectory of the narrative. Due to their length, short stories and even some novelettes don't feature any subplots, and are still perfectly self-contained and fulfilling. Which is a verbose way of saying: I understand what you mean, and in certain cases would agree, but don't feel this new approach objectively weakens anything.
I disagree the transitions don't seem to feel as fluid without b-plots. I like the more in-depth stories but something erks me about the new pacing not sure what it is. still keep up the good works guys :D
@@SamanthaVess Yup. It's how musical instruments are described on a mechanical level. It was I think initially developed in the late 19th century as an aid to musical ethnography, Hornbostel being an ethnomusicologist.
I was somewhat suspicious that this was a completely accurate depiction of flautistry, but I consulted with my sister who played flute and she confirmed that it is 100% accurate and also "flautistry" is a real word and Merriam-Webster should return my calls.
It's the attention to details that has made me a life long fan of LRR. How many comedy troupes knew that a person who plays the flute is called a flautist. Bravo, LRR. Bravo.
I think it's very much on purpose. Also check out the earlier transition at 3:04. Every transition ties the previous scene to the next, either by visual edit or a sound clip. I think it's pretty cool.
Oh yeah, I enjoy the visual and audio scene transitions, and it's cool that they're still being used for the smaller hustles when it's a time rather than character transitions. Just Paul's comment after the cut was a little bit of a mental jump so I wasn't sure!
I have to disagree with the classification of the Autoflute as an electrophone. While Sachs did initially propose that *any* instrument involving electronics should fall within the category, such a wide definition conflicts with classes I-IV. Modern organologists suggest that class V should only include instruments where the electronic component is essential (generally, category 53), with instruments that are merely electronically assisted retaining their non-electronic classification (with the addition of a modifier); in this case, assuming the flute in question is your standard Western concert flute, it would be classified as 421.121.12-9.
Paul does more then making mind control paint: he also summons elder gods, designs websites for B&B's, open hellmouths, leads zombie uprisings, channels magic through pyramids, qualifies for the protour, creates time travel, makes questionable beer..... I really enjoy the mad scientist Paul and the brilliant programmer/chemist/physicist Cameron characters
The French horn attack, silent but deadly. (Or mellophones if you use those) The trombone barrage, long distance destruction. Percussion strike, rapid and powerful. I can't be arsed to come up with more since I need to go to bed and wake up in 5 hours.
Might be a bit early to say this, but I'm digging the changes to ch so far. The smaller more focused episodes feel lighter than the whole crew formula and of course some aspects are no longer there, I'm really enjoying the more focused story line.
So, Paul, I've been having this problem where I know how to play guitar but every one I encounter seems to have some kind of problem, can you do something about that?
The paint was a problem but not Cameron's literal mind controlling app that actually controlled the person that made the paint!!! Also waiting on that app to make a comeback
GAH! I thought this was a re-upload. but then I notice: waaaait, Moonbase Delta!?! NEW CH CONTENT?!?!? WHoooooo~~~~~ . Being currently re-watching Clannad. I half expected Paul's Flute Playing to result in a mysterious, high pitched, ear shattering screech.
Now I'm going to spend all day reading up on the Hornbostel-Sachs Classification System so I too can have insanely technocratic conversations about music.
The whole episode is hilarious, it the best part was the first scene leading up to Graham tossing out the pink bag. I'm still laughing just thinking about it.
Unfortunatly there were no improvements to be made on the destructive power of the bagpipes due to human rights violations. But the commedic power of the Kazoo has only begun to be tapped!
Well there was the episode where Graham helped James make homebrew and then their was the episode where Kathleen tried to find a hobby for Graham because they weren't doing weekly sketches anymore.

Huh, I actually thought the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system was something they made up for a joke, but it's a real thing...
Loved it.
Weapons manufacturers keeping an eye on Paul.
ah the greatest weapon an anti-personal waffle iron
Evil beware we have waffles.
"I have an army."
"We have waffles."
"And now I have an army too."
Not to mention a Beej.
This new shooting structure is brilliant. Tighter stories, greater depth, superior Hustle. Also, Graham's delivery of "Mind-controlling shades of paint" proved to me that falling out of your chair doesn't have to be a bad thing.
Yeah, well thats just like your opinion man.
I... never said it was fact? I get the reference, but still feel confused.
Idk, I still love them, but B-plots are very important to narrative structure, so not having one does kinda weaken it

hearing someone mention the Hornbostel Sachs classification system mentioned brings a smile to my face.
christopher Christos Wait, is that actually a real thing?
Yeah, of course it is. Didn't you learn about it in grade school?
@@SamanthaVess Yup. It's how musical instruments are described on a mechanical level. It was I think initially developed in the late 19th century as an aid to musical ethnography, Hornbostel being an ethnomusicologist.
I loved having an episode all about Paul, but the classic episodes will always have a special place in my heart.
I was somewhat suspicious that this was a completely accurate depiction of flautistry, but I consulted with my sister who played flute and she confirmed that it is 100% accurate and also "flautistry" is a real word and Merriam-Webster should return my calls.

I was suspicious of the "smaller" Commodore Hustles but this was great!
I literally finished binge watching every commodoreHUSTLE vid this past week, so a new episode just made my day! Love it guys!
I see a whole line of these, Laser guided Tubas, explosively shaped violins, Thermobaric Double Basses!
Fragmentation piccolos, armour piercing trombones, fully-auto drums and railgun keyboards. The future of modern warfare/music
Man, the industry really took off after Stalin's Organ
I love it when Graham plays the straight guy.
...straight man. The term is straight man. "Straight guy" just makes him sound like, well. A heterosexual man.
This band geek heartily approves. Thanks, LRR crew, for making my morning once again.
Love the mad scientist Paul episodes.
As a sousaphone player, just have to say that last joke KILLED ME.😂😂😂. Also good luck Paul, it's already heavy enough.
Was the non-sequiter cut at minute five a deliberate humourous edit, or did we lose a scene between two siri queries?
I think the answer is yes.
I think it's very much on purpose. Also check out the earlier transition at 3:04. Every transition ties the previous scene to the next, either by visual edit or a sound clip. I think it's pretty cool.
Yeah, this kind of humorous graphic match cut is a mainstay of commodoreHUSTLE editing.
Oh yeah, I enjoy the visual and audio scene transitions, and it's cool that they're still being used for the smaller hustles when it's a time rather than character transitions. Just Paul's comment after the cut was a little bit of a mental jump so I wasn't sure!

Well, now I'm just curious. DID real-world Paul play the flute 20 years ago?
And if so, can he still make a sound from it?
I wonder if someone ever pointed out the existence of the fire organ to CH paul. The results would be glorious.
your scene transitions in this are brilliant. loving the smaller Hustles. keep it up
Paul does more then making mind control paint:

It stands as testimony to you guys' delivery, that I want to see the classification system being a thing - my education was clearly lacking here.
Well, you're in luck- The Hornbostel-Sachs musical classification system is 100% a real thing and works almost exactly how they alluded to it working.
Awesome! Now we know...
I have been enlightened. Cheers!
Awesome episode! Loved seeing more of Paul going, well, Paul on things. Well executed too! Props to the team, looking forward to more in the future.
Paul can play Tony Stark when Robert Downey Jr leaves.
This aged well
Temporal Magic better yet, he plays Reed Richards!
I got some bad news for ya pal
The last time I was this early, neither Graham nor Paul had beards.
When I was this early, Graham had a beard only on his chin and Paul had a goatee.
The French horn attack, silent but deadly. (Or mellophones if you use those) The trombone barrage, long distance destruction. Percussion strike, rapid and powerful. I can't be arsed to come up with more since I need to go to bed and wake up in 5 hours.

I see The Escapist logo is still hiding in the first frame of commodoreHUSTLE
Lol
So it is... they should fix that.
Brilliant! Loved the D&D scene with everyone pitching in ideas.
Can you guys make like.. a movie? or something... 4:50 killed me
The end about the weapons manufacturing is probably the hardest I have actually laughed out loud in a long time. So thanks for that!
Paul is a great example of a character with high intelligence and low wisdom
When are more Jund em out shirts gonna be available?
I was half expecting Paul to start playing Mask Off
Wow, 4th edition. Blast from the past. Also, go star trek flute music.
So, Paul, I've been having this problem where I know how to play guitar but every one I encounter seems to have some kind of problem, can you do something about that?
Paul has created a marching band robot military force. We should all be very afraid
Can all the LRR members who played instruments all try and play together some day?
Loving the new commodoreHUSTLE.
It's weird seeing graham and paul both having a beard at the same time.
Wait, so Paul has an in with the MIC? Could he finally connect Graham with Lockheed-Martin? Remember, they still won't take his calls.
Haven't watched in years-old faces missing! new faces!
I loved the pink bag, made a nice splat.
Nooooooooooooooooooo! Paul is doing science again. Do we panic now or later?
yes
I kept expecting someone to trip on the bright orange extension cord that Graham steps on at the beginning. Chekhov's Gun much?
The paint was a problem but not Cameron's literal mind controlling app that actually controlled the person that made the paint!!! Also waiting on that app to make a comeback
dead @ garf a day whatch
So with the Laugh-o-tron and now the "improved" flute design, does this make Paul Cyberdine?
the ending bit about the Garf app was epic.
When is the next commador hustle. This was like 3 months ago. Aren't they supposed to be bimonthly.
the cut at 5:00 makes it seem like we missed a scene
new hustle day is the best of days
cool new apartment graham
These are always the best
the joke with the picatinny rail killed me. keep it up guys
Maxim 14. "Mad Science" means never stopping to ask "what's the worst thing that could happen?"
Only in Canada does siri tell you shes sorry
4th Edition, best edition. Good choice, guys!
ArninoStorm Ya I'm not alone in thinking that, I know most people hate it but it is my personal favorite.
Paul.Don't ever change.
1:35 I hear some Dave's Spokesman.
Why did paul use the stream stream to help him build the auto flute 2000
INITIATING THE SONG OF MY PEOPLE...
LOADING SONG DATA....
PRESSURIZING PNEUMATICS...
UNLOCKING VALVES....
ACQUIRING TARGETS.....
You guys saw the escapist logo at the beginning, right?
Now I'm going to spend all day reading up on the Hornbostel-Sachs Classification System so I too can have insanely technocratic conversations about music.
Oh Paul, never change! :D
more commodore than ever before with the exact amounts of hustle for a person on the go.
Video is three years old. Why are they playing Fourth Edition?
The whole episode is hilarious, it the best part was the first scene leading up to Graham tossing out the pink bag. I'm still laughing just thinking about it.
Why were they using 4th edition books at dnd?
This was an odd episode of Sound Euphonium.
Using a Warhammer 40K mini for the mech suit was a pretty sweet idea
I thought that "Choose a job that you like and you never have to work a day in your life" quote came from Craig/Mini Ladd
I just realized that Graham has really similar glasses to mine in this cH.
As a flute player, I enjoyed this episode.
Paul quite possibly creating the instrument of our destruction
...okay, can someone actually calculate the half-life of a flute? I really want to know.
A Picatinny rail on a Sousaphone?!?
The spaghetti from the mini-fridge was secretly in that bag, he trained it and it went 'sour'...
I lost it at the picatinny rail line.
Holy shit what is wrong with Paul's back????
Unfortunatly there were no improvements to be made on the destructive power of the bagpipes due to human rights violations. But the commedic power of the Kazoo has only begun to be tapped!
"Anti-personnel waffle iron"
I live for the hustle
picatinny rail on a sousaphone is one of the best punchlines ever
still kills me every time I see the escapist logo in the first frame.
Man, it's been a loooong time since I pulled out my flute.... wow, that does not sound good wriiten like that.
Fantastic
does anyone see the shirt on paul? I always she him wearing it!!!!
This is just an ad for Garf-a-day isn't it?
Does/did Paul actually have a genius grant?
If you pause at 0:00 you see the Escapist Logo.
As a flute player, I loved this.XD
this is amazing
IS THAT 4E I SEE!?
Didn't this essentially already happen for Graham?
Well there was the episode where Graham helped James make homebrew and then their was the episode where Kathleen tried to find a hobby for Graham because they weren't doing weekly sketches anymore.
I want Paul's shirt
The next model was the Tin-800.
