Thank you SO much for posting this! I went to Epcot a few weeks back and was really disappointed with what they've done to the Imagination complex. It was so much better when I was a kid. The top floor isn't even open anymore. I hope they have plans to bring it back to it's former glory. Disney seems to have gone to more flatscreen tv's around the park than animatronics. I think they're getting lazy perhaps. :(
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! Thank you for uploading this! Let this be a testament to what true Imagineering is and let it stand tall and proud for the Imagineering way. This is what it's all about.
I love this version!! I went on the new ride and it was the first time I was on a ride thinking about what my schedule looked like for the following week. So boring!!!
The Dreamfinder is voiced by Chuck McCann (Uncle Olie in Toei's "Hans Christian Andersen") and Figment is voiced by Billy Barty (Dweedle in Hanna-Barbera's "Wildfire").
Thanks for posting this video. Great images and editing. It helps me bring back memories of the 80's and besides, it shows exactly how the attraction looked like. Greetings from Brazil.
It saddens me that I was far too young--only five to totally grasp this ride back then. I recall not liking it that much. Yet I totally missed it when the new one showed up when I was in fifth grade--althought the butterfly in the birdcage was a huge WTF moment for me in that one.
@Hallamfoebell Yes, and everything that is at Disney World is on their website. Oh and this is for Imagination: recently I have seen pictures of the Dreamfinder around Epcot like at the Imageworks gift shop and Mouse Gear, a large gift store in Future World. The pictures were just put up around 2010, and I have heard rumors about another refurb to make Imagination more like the original. I hope they do it!
I really miss this version of the ride, thanks for the video! I was glad they brought Figment and "One Little Spark" back, but the new version can't hold a candle to the original. On that same subject, Epcot really needs to open the old Image Works back up. I've heard all the old equipment is still up there, and the new area is boring. The rainbow tunnel was cool, and the rest of it ruled too. I took it for granted as a kid, it would be a cool place to revisit.
I agree that it's missing a beauty and visual stimulation of the original, but I think part of the point of the ride was how Figment was teaching soemone about how great the imagination is (in his own way XD)
I hate the fact that I only got to experience this much better version of Journey Into Imagination once in my life. Even more unfortunate, I was only 4 at the time and barely remember anything :(
I kind of miss the original version of the ride. I'm glad figment has a bigger part in the ride now, but this was how it was when I first rode it.... I miss some of the classic things that Disney has changed since I was little. Figment rocks.
@clayrox117 You and Dreamfinder were riding on a carousel that was 75 feet across. It had 5 identical show scenes so that 5 different groups could see the same scene within a minute or 2 of each other. One group would unhook from the track and hook onto the carousel while another group was unhooking and rejoining with the rest of the track and then onto the rest of the ride. It was so complex that it eventually caused problems so they got rid of it. I still miss this version.
@Dragonrider1227 The ride had a "lazy Susanne" type turn table in the beginning that was divided into 4 sections (4 shows could show simultaneously obviously at different points at any given point in time). then entered the 'dream port' and were on the single track that all cars followed. This occurred in what is now part of the ride queue of "into imagination".
@Hallamfoebell Well, the ride you are thinking of is a boat ride called "Living With The Land". It is still open, and it is only one of the rides inside The Land building. There are also a couple of restaurants called Sunshine Seasons and Garden Grill, and a couple other attractions, Soarin' and Circle of Life.
Hopefully this version or at least something similar to this one will return to Epcot very soon because since there version of Captain EO returned July 2,2010.
I've actually heard a lot of rumors that The Dreamfinder might be pulling a "Little Orange Bird" and returning...I'm really hoping that Disney realizes that nostalgia sells...I mean can you even imagine what sort of response the return of this ride would get?? And like you said, no longer a slave to Kodak!
Whoever is responsible for the desecration of this ride should be shot! The original was utterly charming, inspiring and whimsical. It was complete with a catchy song and love-able characters. The ride system was clever and the overall storytelling was excellent. I still cant believe the mural in the que was simply removed or painted over. It breaks my heart to think that they just ripped out the old ride and replaced it with the crap that is there today :(
One more point (and btw the post I referred to below is now above my reply LOL). Prior the them destroying it with with 1st refurbishment, the Kodak part of the ride, where the music changed to "Making Memories" had already been pulled and they had slapped some nonsense in. So there was a gaping hole for a chunk of the ride. Rather than fix that, they destroyed the entire thing IMHO. But it ran for at least a year or 2 like that, so while Kodak def figured in, it was more complicated.
@Hallamfoebell it has not been removed, but only a downstairs portion of Imageworks is open. And the Barnstormer video is Goofy's Barnstormer June 2010 on my channel.
Actually, as of August, about 3/4 of the wand structure remains. I don't know why, but something tells me this was shot with 3 or 4 different cameras, considering constant scene change and different amounts of light.
@npsalm121 Actually that is exactly correct. I was watching it on my brother's computer and the speakers are part of the monitor. They are not doing well, so fortunately one of the computers has a separately-installed Altec Lansing speaker system that has been doing great and lets me hear that cute little voice!!! But sadly it does not sound that way on the ride anymore. It sounds more mature and less fun, a perfect match for today's version.
In the old days of Disneyland, you needed to buy a ticket book to get on rides and the tickets were sorted by letters. The smallest rides like Dumbo and such were a tickets, and the biggest rides like Pirates of the Caribbean were e tickets. If This version of Imagination existed at that time, it would've been an E ticket
My only REAL complaint is the lack of anything interesting in the new imageworks. I still find the ride itself fun *especially better than the second one* but If any place lacks imagination, it's the new imageworks
I like this vid it's cool ..I still want to go on this ride when I went to Disney last year it was pacted and I could not get into the ride and my Mom and bro went to the Test Track and I stade with my cousin and sis and someone was on the wacky talky talkin to my cousin like he was her housband or something and me and my sis started laughing ..it was funny^^
@Hallamfoebell I know almost nothing about Harry Potter. The Flower and Garden Festival has lots of flowers, plants, and character-shaped bushes called topiaries, you can learn about different plants and flowers, there are children's activities like crafts (I made a pipecleaner rose once), and gardening advice and products. It's a beautiful time to see Epcot. The Land pavilion has a "Behind the Seeds" tour available any day, showing neat agricultural studies. Also did you see the Clone Wars vid?
But with out imagination there is no tomorrow. Inventers use imagination to make their creations it. took imagination to make tomarrowland and again to have two characters like dream finder and figment to tell a story about imagination and the possibility of tomorrow only take one spark. I guess I am just trying to say I missed the old one with the original characters and I hope they come back.
in a way though, we should possibily count our blessings. I read somewhere that if they hadn't made these changes, then they would've lost Kodak's sponsorship and the only other company interested in sponsorship (Fujifilm I think) wanted to turn it into some generic Roller Coaster
Actually you got the Eisner stuff backwards. When he saw the 2nd version he stormed off in a huff, disgusted at how much worse they made it after taking Figment out of it. I'm 100% sure of this since I remain a loyal Figgie fan and still miss the original ride. Just wish Eisner stopped the maddness BEFORE they destroyed the 1st version, which to me was done in classic Disney style and I adored it! Anyway if you and the post below check you'll see it was the 2nd ride Eisner hated!
@Hallamfoebell The return of Captain EO is only temporary and they brought it back because Michael Jackson died. I now see that this is a chance to live part of old Epcot, so I'm gonna see it next time. But I do miss the area music from Honey I Shrunk the Audience. There was a mysterious absence of the music, then I saw the Captain EO sign. And today Mickey's Toontown Fair closes to be built over by Fantasyland... I will post a video of the Barnstormer that I took last summer as a tribute.
continued. The new one now is better But it still lacks the beauty and fun of the First one.I don't have nothing against Eric Idle but i do think his character needs to stay in honey i shrunk the audiance. There was something about having 2 characters That were imagined up to tell a story than to have a real person acting like he don't know anything about imagination in the first place. in the end i hope to see dream finder and figment together once again.
ok, how does the ride system work for the first really long scene with dreamfinder and figment??? Are we still moving and the "dreamcatcher" is moving too? Im a bit confused, i never recall going on that in its original state, Im 15. so yea, if someone could explain that it would be fantastic
@WDI2008 They are returning Captain EO for a year because Michael Jackson died. A cast member told me that it would be a year. What do you think they will do at the end of that time: Bring back Honey I Shrunk The Audience or try to make something new (which may fail depending on what they put)?
I agree. That version sucked and brings the point of why I like the new one. It has a suddle approach. Eric Idle's character believes the imagination should be bottled and control and so his part of the ride is serious and boring, we get to figment, who thinks the imagination should be wild and free and his part is vibrant and colorful. It's a great basis for a ride but it COULD use some "plussing" as Walt would say
I feel the same way about The Haunted Mansion. I like the improved sound and audio animatronics, but I hate the new attic and how they got rid of the red globes on the chandeliers in the corridor of doors. I'm also not very fond of the new interactive line either.
i love figment here is my first favorite disney character but i wish i could've went on the oringinal like u did. and i can describe figment perfectly two tiny wings eyes big and yellow honrs of a steer form head to tail heres royal purple pigment there vola you've got a figment
Man...I just visited Epcot for the first time ever, and I liked the ride they have, but...It's not as well done as this. I do hope they get rid of the current ride and go back to this style, but updated, because there's so much more they can do with technology, and it's not very popular or relevant now.
Dear Disney...Kodak doesn't sponsor the ride anymore, so you don't have to put up with their shit, and the 30th anniversary of EPCOT is coming, so how about you go and restore the classic? ;) (Yes, I realize that this will take many years to do, but if they can expand Fantasy Land, they can sure as heck restore this)
@TwilightLink77 I personally would love it seeing as I live in California and Figment is such a cute and underrated character. And more people would start to know who him and Dreamfinder are. Personally I think they should replace It's a Small World with this ride!
I visited Epcot today. We now live in a bizzaro upside down world where the Mexican Boat Ride is nifty while Journey Into Imagination is the lamest attraction in the park.
Actually, the the reason this version was changed was Kodak(The attraction's sponsor)contract with the pavillion was almost up(it stated that the ride HAD to change by 2000) so to keep sponsorship, they proposed a ride that was more "scientific" than entertaining.
@Hallamfoebell I am sorry but honest to say that last time I was at Epcot in November, I wanted to go into the Wonders of Life building to see if anything was still there, but the only original thing in sight was a mobile on the ceiling. The place is now used as a festival center for the Food&Wine and International Flower and Garden Festivals. My dad pointed out where the old rides and shows were, and those places were roped off. Btw I've posted my Barnstormer video if you're interested.
@Hallamfoebell Yes. If you want to know what's open and what everything is like today, you can go to the Disney World website. Epcot's International Flower and Garden Festival is coming soon. And if you want a rush, go up to the url on this video page, delete 7nhEEBPnuro and paste KlLvKPYdzkQ in its place. It's not violent or anything, but the first time you see it it may seem pretty scary. It's a preview for the Star Wars the Clone Wars three-part special. It has me worried for those Jedi X_x
Disney has already gone backwards in time a bit by returning Captain EO and Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room to Disney World (no more Iago and Zazu!). But of course they demolished my childhood member Test Track and now it is basically a Tron ride on the same track with the same name. Sure, you design your own vehicle, but it doesn't have the warm feel the other Test Track had. I grew up with Test Track! :''(
Ok, think I'll clarily the replies I made. This is definately NOT a complaint and I loved seeing this. But this is not the full, original ride. At 5 min in, the ride changed to a Kodak theme with the music "Making Memories." Even w/out that part it was a million times better and Eisner stormed off when he saw the redo. So did I, but I think they noticed him more hehe. Glad to hear they are trying again...wish they would just bring the 1st one back. Anyone know the plans??
It wasnt that the wand itself was horrible, it just detracted from the simple beauty of spaceship earth. kind of like putting a luggage carrier atop a nice car.
perhaps, and with EPCOT getting more and more Disney characters than perhaps it IS a little mute to say that, but I always saw Epcot as a giant Tommorowland *old Tomorrowland anyway* and to have someone like the Dreamfinder in a place like that kinda throws that off to me. *It didn't when I was six mind you, but looking at this video I did
at least they havent torn it down like horizons. man i wish they had refurbed it opposed to tearing it down completely for that thrill ride mission space
I don't know. I've heard rumors and honeslty, I don't really want it. As much as I loved this ride as a kid, I don't REALLY think he works in Epcot. Plus, I love the novilty value of Eric Idle in a Disney ride
I will never understand why they closed this ride! The new one is a "C" ticket compared with this one. For sure a good old "E" atraction. And I miis Horizons a lot, too.
We need a petition to bring back the original in all it's glory!
This is one piece of the wonderful world of Disney that I want to bring back. :)
A far superior attraction to its current incarnation - it both sparked AND showed what can be done with the Imagination.
The art on this is amazing, like in the "color" section and even in the ride mural out front. Why can't we have stuff like this any more?
Thank you SO much for posting this! I went to Epcot a few weeks back and was really disappointed with what they've done to the Imagination complex. It was so much better when I was a kid. The top floor isn't even open anymore. I hope they have plans to bring it back to it's former glory. Disney seems to have gone to more flatscreen tv's around the park than animatronics. I think they're getting lazy perhaps. :(
OMG! I found my childhood! And it was right where I left it too, in the old Figment ride!

This was my fav Disney ride EVER and they SCREWED IT UP (the new one sucks) This is how I'll always rememeber it, thanks for posting! ^_^
I hate the fact that I only got to experience this much better version of Journey Into Imagination once in my life. Even more unfortunate, I was only 4 at the time and barely remember anything :(
This was a classic attraction. Walt would have loved it. I just can't believe they had to update it and replace Dreamfinder with Eric Idle!
They actually HAVE started doing that. I think when they revamped Figment, they learned a valuable lesson.
Ahhh I miss this ride! The new one simply doesn't measure up!
I kind of miss the original version of the ride. I'm glad figment has a bigger part in the ride now, but this was how it was when I first rode it.... I miss some of the classic things that Disney has changed since I was little. Figment rocks.
I go through the first 4 stages of grief every time I watch this.

Why, oh why did they tamper with the magic? The original JII was the best. We rode it on our first trip to WDW back in '93.
Horizons and Old Imagination were my favorite rides at Epcot. it's a shame that both are gone.
Journey Into Imagination closed for 2 renivated versions
Horizons got replace by Mission Space
@Dragonrider1227 The ride had a "lazy Susanne" type turn table in the beginning that was divided into 4 sections (4 shows could show simultaneously obviously at different points at any given point in time). then entered the 'dream port' and were on the single track that all cars followed. And don't forget for there to be figment you have to have dreamfinder because acording to the rider, figment was made from dreamfinders imagination.
And here I had thought that everyone had forgotten about Dreamfinder. I thought everyone hated that guy.
Whoever is responsible for the desecration of this ride should be shot! The original was utterly charming, inspiring and whimsical. It was complete with a catchy song and love-able characters. i remember when the que for this ride was like 1-2 hours long now since they revamped it its like 2 minutes :

The "white Room" you were talking about darkknight109 was the room based on art.
Isnt one of the Dreamfinder machines still at Epcot in one the stores in Future World ?
continued. The new one now is better But it still lacks the beauty and fun of the First one.I don't have nothing against Eric Idle but i do think his character needs to stay in honey i shrunk the audiance. i wasn't alive for this, but its very steampunk.
wow, there's people at that pavilion! and it's not that hideous orange colour outside either.
ok, how does the ride system work for the first really long scene with dreamfinder and figment??? Are we still moving and the "dreamcatcher" is moving too? Im a bit confused, i never recall going on that in its original state, Im 15. so yea, if someone could explain that it would be fantastic
If ever we needed Dreamfinder it's now
@GalaxyJazzGirl This version (unfortunately) no longer exists. It's still there, but pretty much an empty shell of what it used to be.
ok so we got figment back, now we just need them to bring back The Dreamfinder and we'll be all set. :-)
This makes me want to cry. This was my favorite ride at Epcot as a child. I have an annual pass and I skip it completely now. They killed the magic.
Bob Iger was worse than Eisner! He also killed the magic by wiping out The Great Movie Ride!
@WDI2008 They are returning Captain EO for a year because Michael Jackson died. A cast member told me that it would be a year. What do you think they will do at the end of that time: Bring back Honey I Shrunk The Audience or try to make something new (which may fail depending on what they put)?
@DisneyfanBeckers They should return the first incarnation of Journey into Imagination.
@DisneyfanBeckers same thing happened to me, then i realized i didnt have both earbuds in! so, maybe one of your speakers doesnt work?
They transformed him from a childish pixie to an annoying pest.
I Love Figment!
Haha I remember when Journey had LINES.
Wow! This old one is SOOOOO much better!!!!! Sort of makes me sad :(
I feel the same way about The Haunted Mansion. I like the improved sound and audio animatronics, but I hate the new attic and how they got rid of the red globes on the chandeliers in the corridor of doors. I'm also not very fond of the new interactive line either.
i love figment here is my first favorite disney character but i wish i could've went on the oringinal like u did. and i can describe figment perfectly two tiny wings eyes big and yellow honrs of a steer form head to tail heres royal purple pigment there vola you've got a figment
hey dragonrider1227 disney should make a movie about dreamfinder and figment dont u think cause i think so
Man...I just visited Epcot for the first time ever, and I liked the ride they have, but...It's not as well done as this. I do hope they get rid of the current ride and go back to this style, but updated, because there's so much more they can do with technology, and it's not very popular or relevant now.
@clayrox117 I believe you and Dreamfinder are going in a circle at the exact same speed so it seems like you're not moving
Dear Disney...Kodak doesn't sponsor the ride anymore, so you don't have to put up with their shit, and the 30th anniversary of EPCOT is coming, so how about you go and restore the classic? ;)

That's like skipping dessert and going straight to your bath.

For a ride called "Journey into Imagination", the new one isn't very imaginative.

Glad to hear they are trying again...wish they would just bring the 1st one back. Anyone know the plans??
In the waiting line area, or on the ride itself?
The Dreamfinder was voiced by Chuck McCann and Figment by Billy Barty.
"Great big beatufiul tomorrow" XD
4:00 wasnt the main problem with ride the Flight to the Imagination turntable and revolving set ?
I wish they would bring this one back.
I personally didn't find the old one boring. Well, it's "What if labs" yeah, but not the ride itself
Mission: Space is AWESOME!!
New Fantasyland is not done yet. The Seven Dwarfs' Mine Train doesn't open until 2014..
It wasnt that the wand itself was horrible, it just detracted from the simple beauty of spaceship earth. kind of like putting a luggage carrier atop a nice car.
Wait. Is this the one before or after it closed for several years and just recently reopened?
If losing the Carousel of Time wasn't bad enough. Disney keeps destroying all the childhood memories by "revamping" the older rides.
perhaps, and with EPCOT getting more and more Disney characters than perhaps it IS a little mute to say that, but I always saw Epcot as a giant Tommorowland *old Tomorrowland anyway* and to have someone like the Dreamfinder in a place like that kinda throws that off to me.
I never went on this ride. our parents always made us skipp future world & we went straight to the world showcase...
Chuck McCain voiced the Amoeba Boys in "The Powerpuff Girls".
Ugh. Makes me ill to think that this beautiful ride could be replaced with such an inane one. UCK UCK UCK!
I remember that. It was Captain Eo.
Is that ride still there?
