    Very interesting video,ive found the same thing as i've recently returned to playing my vinyl after many years in the CD only category, i fell into re purchasing some of my favourite albums on the remastered vinyl and i would say that in 70% of the cases my old original copies sounded better,sometimes way better

    Thanks again Rockinroni for sharing your trials and tribulations with the VC. The situation with the Dire Straits Brothers in Arms record really was counter-intuitive regarding the British pressing to what I would have anticipated in that circumstance. Great tips on the shipping side of things so we can have a professional point of view on what to look for and what to avoid as well.

    Another good video. I'm not a high end listener - I am a thrift digger, so I don't buy new reissues - but it always comes down to; it depends... there is never one cut and dried answer. However, I am so glad Rhino and Sundazed have been doing such great work and keeping the art alive!

    I know this is an old video but I also own that rhino reissue of the soft parade it is a very nice sounding reissue I've never been disappointed with any rhino reissue some of the best sounding I've heard from rhino are their early reissues from the 80s I have a rhino pressing of the turtles first album reissued by rhino in 82 or 83 back when they actually had a cartoon drawing of a rhino on the label fantastic sounding very low noise floor
    The most recent mono reissues of the Buffalo Springfield catalog from rhino are worth checking out as well they were mixed and mastered under the supervision of Neil Young and do sound better than the originals imo

    Ron, Just in case you were unaware, The Mobile Fidelity "Lab" series (Silver header)is different from the "Gold Header" for a reason. They began using Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab at the top of titles when they were unsure or unable to source the original master tapes. There may be some older titles that have OMR but didn't use the original tapes before they started using the differentiator. I hope this clears this up , a bit.

    Did you ever do a video on Japaese vinyl? Japanese vinyl has always been hit and miss for me. I have a Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy on an early Japanese pressing. and it sounded bright with no low end. Then I purchased a Eric Clapton Slowhand on 180 gram japanese vinyl and it sounds terrific. Is there a secret to know which Japanese vinyl is good?

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni  8 лет назад +2

      I talk about jaanese records on many of my videos. With the Japan Vinyl you have to have the original pressing or first issues. Those are great sounding the reissues are not so great they are a little bright sounding and a little Bass shy. Problem for the older Japan records the original issues in nm condition can be pricy

    A Canadian seller got mental when I asked politely if he could ship my album with extra protection like the one you showed us. He even implied I was attacking him AMD his reputation by simply asking something normal.
    That was a Discogs seller.
    Suffice to say I cancelled the purchase.
    Some people think they're doing you a favour by selling you anything. Completely unaware of how customer service works.
    BTW, I''m looking forward to buy the Dire Straits box, but there is the Abbey Rodd half. Speed master8ng of Brothers in arms and a single disc one.
    I haven't heard of the one you showed.
    I will go definitely for that one and re-sell the one in the box.

    Hi Ron
    "Love Over Gold" is one of my all time favorite albums. I have a German Vertigo (red label) pressings of it. But I'd like to get the best sounding copy of it. What is the best sounding pressing, in your opinion?... What are those "domestic" pressings you're talking about?... I've never heard about those before :)

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni  9 лет назад

      Your German original is probable the best one you will find and probable better than my copy it just breaks my heart the way mo fis sound today.
      Domestic is used to describe products that are made in your country
      Domestic is for me USA or Canada.
      Domestic for you europe pressings Holland makes some of the best sounding records, Germany and UK as well

    ABOUT THAT BROTHERS IN ARMS: I have not heard the reissue yet, but I am sure you are right about this. The record is DIGITAL, yup this is one of those vinyl records that had digital in the signal path, in fact it was even recorded digitally it says it on the sleeve. I am not a big fan of digital transfers to vinyl really. However, with that being said, without even hearing it, I am about 100% sure the reissue beats out the original. The digital technology of today is far superior to what was available in 1982. It is unfortunate that such a great album comes from a digital source, there is not way around it. Thanks for posting!!!! I did not know that reissue existed...You the man ronnie.

      Ron Beaudry And what is that Brothers In Arms reissue? Where can I find?

    • @leyland9999
      @leyland9999 6 лет назад

      I have the original issue from 1982 on a Dutch Polygram pressing and that one is superb! Dead quiet vinyl and pressed straight, not a trace of being off centered at all. Tell that to today’s pressing plants! This Polygram plant from Baarn, Holland, was, in my opinion, the best pressing plant in the world. They pressed for Polydor, Philips, (Phonogram), Fontana, Decca, London, Deutsche Grammophon and if they had the capacity for several others, too. Oh, and the weight was what was the usual weight in those days, roughly between 100 and 120 grams. The best was invented way back when, not today.

    ABOUT THAT MSFL: with the mofi's I have been on the fence much like yourself, weird EQ, very hit or miss with their stuff. I never know which Mofi is good and they can cost a fortune, look at the OOP UHQR mofi records. Can you say Insanity.

    • @PrivTrd
      @PrivTrd 10 лет назад +1

      Ron Beaudry Is that the rule for Mofi, New = Hit/miss, but old=good ? I know some are out of the world good but some are not and at the prices that the MSFL records are fetching it is tough to gamble without knowing if it is going to be a stellar sounding LP ahead of time.

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni  10 лет назад +1

      ok what i was saying is back in the day 1970's MFSL were at the top of the food chain at around $25.00 for a new record but now with all the really good reissues and the availability of Japanese pressings I am not paying $100 plus for mfsl or even $50.00 but the new mofi from music direct I have not found any new reissues that sound superior . Like I say in my video they sound nice but when compared to even a original standard domestic pressing they are not as good sounding so wow what happened at mofi half speed mastered? and when i called them and told them of my findings they are like what? why are you calling? everyone else loves our stuff. We still have the same old guys doing it the same old way so how can it not be great? Go away you crackpot.
      I was at a audio show Axpona in Jacksonville Florida a couple of years back when the new Santana mofi reissues came out I got Abraxas and in one of the best rooms the guy had just bought the Santana first lp,so I asked to hear it and he told me it sucked and when i got home I compared my Abraxas cbs half speed to the new mofi half speed I got at the show and the guy was right on, it sucked and went for sale on ebay.

    • @MyChannelVideosz
      @MyChannelVideosz 10 лет назад

      Ron Beaudry The wear is in the grooves, or rather the modulation in the grooves. That is exactly the same groove as in a standard pressing except that a 180gramm pressing has more redundant vinyl between the two sides. Shortly: a 180gr pressing wears exactly as quickly as a standard one. Furthermore, when you set your vertical tracking angle (VTA) correctly for standard pressing, it's wrong when you play a thicker record and vice versa. This has a huge impact on the sound. 180 gram is in no way audiophile, it's just a marketing hype.. Far more important is the process of cutting the master lacquer, the plating and the pressing.

    • @hurkamur1
      @hurkamur1 6 лет назад

      Ron Beaudry Not really, I have a original domestic KENDUN master of Fleetwood Mac S/T and it knocks the piss out of my mofi copy. Also, I think a lot of those silver label MOFIs are cheaper and not necessarily from the original masters.

  • @segasonic9117
    @segasonic9117 6 лет назад

    I was confused today when I saw KICK half-speed on Amazon US today. The obi had the Atlantic logo. As far as I knew, all reissues use the original labels and packaging of the ORIGINAL release. The original release of anything INXS is of course Australian pressings. INXS were on WEA, not Atlantic. Makes me wonder if AC/DC reissues use the Albert's label for reissues. I am guessing not. Kinda pisses me off that reissues of Australian music do not get the same respect in that regard.

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni  6 лет назад

      A Shaw well I guess it all depends on who's reissuing it and if they can get the rights to the original labels but I agree with you 100%

    • @segasonic9117
      @segasonic9117 6 лет назад

      Ron Beaudry Thanks for the reply! One thing with the reissues that annoys me is when they do not have notes about the source. I feel that every release should say what masters were used. I know that most companies are not aiming the reissues at people like us, but it would be nice to know. I recently bought a reissues of ICEHOUSE's "Man of Colours" as it is one of my favourite records ever. It sounds awful, definitely a digital CD master. My original I bought when I was 8 sounds far better. Very disappointing.

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni  6 лет назад

      yes I have talked about this in some of my videos its a red flag when the record producer is not proud to say what the original source was and what the source was that the record was remastered from.
      This Information is very important. some records companys may say from the original master tape, but omit they digitized the tape and remastered the record using digital. Most of these are not good sounding at all but there are a few exceptions.
      The folks that that do it right like Quality records, Analogue productions always have a hype sticker on the shrink listing all the important info, they do it right, and their records sound awesome
