  • In this video How to build confidence in a small fearful dog. Dog Training with Americas Canine Educator Thomas walks you through how he trains a small fearful dog from his first interaction to building confidence. Behavior training is different than obedience dog training. When working with an insecure dog the goals and challenges are quite different. Thomas shows you how to take a dog that is afraid of everything and help them work through that insecurity with the use of a long line and a prong collar. If you have questions on this video or how to use the prong collar leave those in the comments below!

Pets and children, both pure liability. So to become the decision guiding "adult" in raising them. Love Tom's approach to "raising" a dog, much like "raising" a child to make good decisions. Relationship and practice. Wonderful stuff.

Tom! This was SO helpful! Jordy is just like my dog. We moved to a new city and now she HATES going for walks because she’s so scared and reactive to every little thing. She pulls like mad because she’s so scared and she would literally run back home if she could. We’re seriously at our wits end trying to figure things out to help her. Not sure if you’d see this, but any input would be crazily appreciated.

Mine too; she's never been to a park, think the only time she's been on a leash is to the vet or to be put in strange people's car (when we adopted her). I am going to take it one step at a time with her. She deserves a good life now. 10 years and 9 months old with a bad leg because she was attacked.

I adopted a very strong 5 1/2 year old mastiff about 1 1/2 years ago. He used to drag me around like a rag doll. Every one told me what kind of collars to use. i even got a harness that was promised to have no dog get out of....He was out of it in 10 sec. I took him to my local trainer and she told me that she had never seen a dog like him in her 20 years of training. She was the first person to tell me it was ok to put him in a prong collar. Every one else told me I was a monster to ever think about using a prong collar. The transformation was amazing. I used to have to call ahead at the vet and we would sneak him in on the cat side. He has to go in every month for meds for his Addison's disease. It was crazy. Now with my confidence up he is a really good on the leash and we can go for daily walks. It is nice to see a dog trainer saying the prong is ok and right by some dogs. Thank you. I still get some looks but I do not care. It is my job to keep him safe when we are out. I did not want his fear aggression to put him in a bad situation. Although I am not sure if he does have that (he was abused before I got him) When I do let him meet people outside of the house he seems to like it. How do I tell the difference between fear aggression and just never being taught to walk on a leash? Most people are scared of him because of his size and his bark so not many people want to meet him.

Thank you for putting the needs and safety of your dog first. I am the same way with my two dogs. They know the rules, I don't care if the people around me give me "the look". My rules ensure the safety of my dogs and the safety of the people around that come in contact with them. I am the kind of Mom that has no hesitation saying "Ah ah we are not doing that." My dogs know not to disregard the rules. They are relaxed and very well behaved at home and in public.

I have tears in my eyes watching this video, Tom. I have exactly the same dog with the same problems. Mini schnauzers are very intelligent dogs, but very fussy and nervous if not socialized in early age. Mine is 3 and a half years old. I overprotected him since got him. He had bad experience being attacked by a Rottweiler couple of years ago. This made me avoid dogs, especially big dogs outside when with him. He is very fearful dog outside ( so do I as his owner ) and it is not working very well with handle him outside.
Thanks for helping us with our dogs! Keep doing the great job and educate us how to be better dog parents!!

My pit/mastiff pup would probably sky dive if he got a 'good boy' rather than a treat for something new. I save the treats for the boring routine of a daily obedience session although now that we have been doing it several months he needs to give me several reps for a single treat...I'm a mean mom trying to ween him off those lol

I have a dog that I rescued over 3 years ago. To the best of my knowledge, she lived on the streets of SC. She is afraid still of everything, even after 3 years. I can't get out a fly swatter or vacuum or else she will hide. Just last week my husband started construction on our house by taking out some bigger windows and putting new ones in. She has taken now to hiding under my bed even when I am home. She used to sleep in her own bed in our bedroom. I work during the day and she's home alone although there is a cat here.
What is interesting is that she loves it if I put on her harness because she knows that she's going for a car ride. Her temperament changes immensely. I take her to doggie daycare two days a week and she loves it. Without knowing what all she has been through, I have no clue how to help her with her anxieties.

Hi, I hope you read this comment since we're in a similar situation with a dog in the neighbourhood. A Romanian, rescued dog, adopted at 10 months old, currently close to 2 years old.
Extremely fearful, still can't walk in the street without peeing and pooping at the same time because of the fear/stress. Shuts down when a jogger / cyclist approaches but is still 30 meters behind. Shuts down as in, pulling itself (flight) as far as possible and waits there for the approacher to pass.
The trainers says long leash and take it slow. Others say, take leadership make him feel safe and secure walking with you.
The long leash is not realistic for walking since the dog flights into the bushes, also on the street that is not realistic and the dog isn't learning to walk with you or anything much. It great in a field but isn't preparing the dog for real situations.
Of course we don't want to strain the dog's neck too much and keep it as enjoyable as possible so that's why I recommended a harness with a short leash attached to the hip only for situation where the dog has to keep walking. A longer leash attached to the collar for communicating your expectations / encouraging to keep walking. It felt like the dog was learning to walk as expected but still pees and poops so enormous anxiety.
Why did I recommend that? Because I'm raising 2 insecure, recued dogs that were fearful their first walks and with men etc. With my first one (pup) I didn't dare to push him and let him explore at his own pace but that led to having to make his own decisions which in theory would lead to more anxiety. Aparently also in practice, what he did was stay in his safe space, come down, smell something, get frightened and run back to his safe space. My godfather (experienced with dogs and traditional raising techniques) then told me to just take the lead, go for a walk, ignore him the first 15 minutes and he'll open up. Exactly that happend, we had to drag him along the first 10 minutes before he started smelling things and seeing pidgeons, ... he opened up and walked beside me. Afterwards he was very playful in that same garden he was anxiously exploring before.
With my second insecure, rescued dog it happend quite similar. I had to drag and encourage him for the first 10 minutes and once he started smelling things in the park he was walking perfectly beside me. With both of them their first walk they were attached to my hip with one lead with a harness.
Back to the Romanian case, the dog is now on anti-depressants to ease the over-stimulation and the owner is torn between advices and hoping someone will fix her dog. I volunteerd to just walk the dog since I'm not a professional and help it get more desensitized. Aparently her trainer got angry because I pushed the dog too much and I find him a moron for his methods. So everyone's getting angry (due to inability to help or just being headstrong), no one's actually helping.
The dogs is nearly 2 years old and can't enjoy a walk, says enough about the current methods. But of course this case is not solved by one trainer giving some advice every few weeks. That leads us to the owner which texts me things like "oh please walk our dog at times there's no traffic etc." or "I'm not sure it's a good idea to walk him today, he hasn't been doing good lately", ... the advice is giving but I don't feel it's being executed, seeing their struggle to get the dog into his walking gear and towards the door. It doesn't seem realistic for them either, timewise.
Subjective conclusion of a non professional, there seems to be a lack of leadership, a lack of action, structure (a separated couple) and indoors. The dog does not really follow the owner through the house so might say something about their bond? Does the dog trust its handler with his safety, her guidance? Does having to make his own decisions for safety etc. give him more anxiety / flight? A dog on anti-depressants seems like a huge red flag for the situation it's in. A 2 year old dog not enjoying walks, another huge red flag.
I hate to say it but assessing the situation, the owner and the dog, it might be better to put him in a shelter somewhere out of the city where they can work with him. We've got some good shelters here in Belgium. At first, I didn't want to believe that to be better for the dog and the owner but after volunteering with the dog, it does not seem the situation for him. Even if someone fixes her dog, if she does not follow up or not change her handling compared to how she handled the dog up to now, it won't get better. Also, she tends to change the person she takes advice from when the advice doesn't comply with what she's has the spine for. I'd say the more professional opinions, the better but she's being torn between conflcting advice and without plan of action (which a trainer should provide?). We're not doing a good job helping her either, honestly. I volunteered, he's just taking care of his cashflow.
There doesn't seem to be too much content about these insecure / rescue types and not much clarity on how to handle them. I honestly bit my tongue a few times watching this video, wondering if even you had dealt with enough of these types. But as long as there's a plan it's better than without one.
I'd prefer Tom Davis' or his crew's advice / opinions but if that doesn't happen, feel free to comment or trash my methods, I'm here to learn and to help dogs.
Tom Davis' isn't touring in Europe anytime soon, I suppose?

I really appreciate your channel. I mostly see you working with big dogs but it's still helpful for my little terrier mix. So I was rather happy to see this video! She's always been insecure and "aggressive" since I got her and one of her biggest fears is large dogs. True to terrier form, she prefers fight instead of flight. Consistency is key with her because the one day you slack off a little bit is the day she'll decide to rush an English Mastiff. I've tried only training with positive reinforcement and it's as you say... it takes forever and because of her tendency to be stubborn and regress without consistency, it was essentially ineffective. When I started to take a balanced approach, she started to calm down! She stopped trying to set the pace on walks. She started to check in with me whenever we approached a new situation that scared her rather than automatically resorting to aggressive behavior. It's been a huge improvement. The progress is still slow, because that's just how she is. But it's progress. We still have a long way to go with other dogs, men and small children (particularly when they come into our house.) But seeing her quickly take to this balanced training approach gives me hope. Thank you!

Hi There! We just adopted a dog and she's a beautiful 6-month-old pup, and she's been with us for 2 weeks now. We have a couple of problems that we are currently dealing with. 1. The dog doesn't want to get close to us and much prefers to be in a cage than to be outside a cage. 2. She is having a hard time bonding with us and won't accept any hand-fed treats 3. She is overall fearful of everyone and rarely eats her food when people are around. Seeing your channel really gave me hope that this dog will get better. Thank you

I love your channel! I have 2 1 yr old dogs. Both females. 1 is a maltipoo and 2 is a pin-tzu. The pintzu ziggy has become very territorial of her cage. But before that, my daughter who is 31 would come home in the morning from work and ziggy started to nip her leg then jumped and nipped her butt. Then she started doing that with my 29 yr old son whenever he walked by she'd bark then go racing after him. Now shes territorial of her cage...to everyone except me and my husband. She bukkys the maltipoo pulling on her face and ears too. But shes very lovable and submissive she rolls over on her back immediately when she knows she did something. I know theres help for her, i have faith.

It's seriously so amazing watching everything on ur channel and seeing how you are with every type of dog!! and even these fearful dogs that you feel would never get over their insecurities and live a normal happy life if it weren't for what you do!!! I know it's very unhealthy to love this way.. because I have a fearful aggressive yorkie mix and I've been trying everything I can to get him back to the dog he used to be. I watch videos from your channel like these and it definitely does help, but I really feel he needs more than that. He's 4 now and I've had him since he was 8 wks but the issue is I would bring him everywhere and he was very exposed to everything until we started a business and then were gone a lot. a lot of the responsibility was left to my kids to take him out, go play outside etc and this for sure has changed him. They would bring him out to pee for one second and go straight back inside instead of letting him hear things smell things etc. and it feels like overnight he became fearful of everything! and the toughest thing is with fight or flight, he is definitely fight so barks and barks until the scary thing will go away. Another thing is I've only had enough people be willing to help me with the exercises where you have someone sit afar and slowly move them closer with treats & positive reinforcement to show him he shouldn't be scared. But as you've said in your videos as well, their so scared so they won't even take their favorite treat in the world at that moment! I just don't know if this is even possible to do alone for as much as I've tried. I'd love to hear what you think!! I'm at the end of my rope and really need to figure it out because it just gets worse, we can't people over, and he freaks anytime I bring him outside so I'm just afraid he's going to bite someone!!! Thank you soooo much!!! Sry for the novel and look forward to hearing from you. Kristy Salvas

Just adopted a super frightened street dog that lost all her pups and was being attacked by other strays, she is not used to ever being touched or petted by a human. Been feeding her for 7 months and recently had her caught by a net and am keeping her in my garage. She allows me to touch her now but just goes wild if I try to put a collar or leash on her. Would really appreciate some advice, as with now u can't take her out for walks. It would be awful if she escaped and returned to the old street where no one cares for her..

Thank you for your leadership and for taking questions. I know this is from 2019 but will ask anyway. Dealing with fearful small dog from hoarding situation. He is very nervous and barks at apparent noises and especially when someone comes in our home. Currently using an auto vibration bark collar but would like to help him over this hump. He will also start to shut down once leash is on so in order to get him exercised, I have been carrying him out of the house to the bottom of our driveway. Never thought of a mini-prong! All advice regarding barking has been throwing treats or taking him to another room with a Kong when someone visits. I am starting to go through your videos so hopefully will learn more. Whenever I watch or read information that talks about positive only training, there is something that doesn't sit right with me. When I listen to you, I think, yep...this resonates.

Do wish I saw how the dog came in so I could compare him to mine. We got Jax, an 8 pound terrier mix, as a rescue after he had been abandoned. He came in and tried to bully our 80 pounder, until he was put in his place. He often displays fearful behavior around food, putting on a harness or leash, being picked up, and being left alone. We had to put up gates in the house because he could not handle being in any room with the door closed, especially if he was alone. He refuses to even enter a crate- no place he could be trapped. Lots of issues. He is not food or toy motivated- in fact he is afraid of all toys, and after a year of trying, he has just started to learn how to sit. He shakes uncontrollably at times for no apparent (to us ) reason. He will growl and bite when pushed to do anything he does not want to do, and refuses to be groomed. OMG, where do we start? I would like to consider bringing him to you, but I think he would have a heart attack. When he is not being fearful, he is an absolute lovebug. We have been trying these techniques for quite some time, but his biting is still an issue that disturbs us most. His little teeth are like razor blades.

Hello! I love your videos and techniques so much. I feel like they're the closest to what might be able to help me. I've watched so many videos and talked to trainers and feel that no case has represented his fear as close as this dog. Although, mine is not aggressive. He is the sweetest and wouldn't hurt a fly but is SO scared. He is also a rescue dog. I rescued him (Happy) with another dog (Camper) at the same time on June 18, 2020. I got him because when I took Camper out of the kennel they were in, he freaked out so I couldn't leave him behind. Camper is confident and has managed to overcome his trauma and is this dog's rock. However, Happy has only progressed very little. He is terrified of humans and runs from me and pees while he is running. He will poop while running too is he is really, really scared. I put him on a leash and he freezes and doesn't care about the pressure it puts on him, he will still attempt to push away. How can I help him over this hump of trusting me? I'm so lost and feel discouraged but feel like you might be able to help me. You mentioned in the video to comment with any questions, so I am giving this a shot. Any suggestions or anyway to talk to you? I will do what it takes to help him gain confidence and desperately need someone that cares enough to help him too, which I can't seem to find one near me. Anyway, thank you SO much for your time and all you do for dogs. #NoBadDogs ❤️

    Hey, love your channel!
I have a very small dog puppy, she is about 17 weeks now.
From day one (9 weeks) she has been terrified of everything, taking 3-4 hours to pee in New environments and peeing herself screaming when another dog approaches. I think she had some kind of bad experience at the breeders with another pup because we worked through extreme fear of being touched at the nape, let alone a collar or leash.
She is no longer afraid of people and more confident, but still easily anxious outside etc.
We have a very balanced big dog that she loves, and she is big friends with the other dogs in the family, but other dogs are still a huge issue.
She has very clear boundaries at home and does very well in obedience, but once another dog is around she won't take treats, engage and is just looking for the nearest hiding spot.
Off leash she will warm up to new dogs after spending an hour or so whining, barking and running away.
She wants to join in play but the second the dogs look in her direction or come closer she is gone. After a while she will start playing and having fun, but every time we go out it's like the reset button has been hit and we are back to square one.
Should we just continue walking past dogs without interaction on leash and trying to get her to meet new dogs off leash?
We are worried she will become fearfully aggressive over time, and since she is very young we want to do our best for her...

Thank you for all your RUclips videos! My dog can be reactive while on leash to dogs, runners and bikers. I used a prong collar to help communication what I wanted from him. We have been working on his reactivity and he is doing so well! I also think me being more confined while training him and while were out on the trails have helped too. I can now walk him by runners and bikers on a harness in a perfect heal!!! We will pass dogs on the prong collar in a perfect heal no corrections needed! The other day we pasted two hyper dogs, walked in a perfect heal no reactivity or pulling, and I heard the people say wow that's a good dog I was so proud!!

  • @ab935
    @ab935 5 лет назад +10

Prong collars need fail safes. They can fall apart and off goes the dog. All you need to make one is 2 slide bolt snaps and some paracord. Then it is attached to the flat collar and the prong collar. If the prong collar fails the fail safe gives you a chance to attach the leash to the flat collar, it is in no way a substitute for a collar attached to a leash.
I saw somebody at the vet's office who had her dog wearing a prong collar like a necklace with no flat collar. I told her to have the vet show her the proper way to use a prong collar, wonder if the vet even knew.
The problem with prong collars, choke collars and e-collars is that any dummy can buy one and use it improperly. Perhaps the places that make them illegal should change to requiring a license to use them. A license that requires proper knowledge to acquire.

I have a schnauzer mix, with similar issues. The interesting part is that is seems to be connected somehow to certain smells, or even seasons. She gets terrified when she smells barbecue. She also gets really bad in spring time. She was fine and balanced and hadn't shown signs of fearfulness in almost a year, at least nothing extraordinary. One day we stepped out, and she was in total panic. We walked in places she had walked 100eds of times, and she was suddenly terrified, even though there was no one or nothing in sight. That lasted for almost 2 months. First month was a nightmare, then I got the feromon collar, and it did wonders, she was back to her old self in a week or so. Although unlike this schnauzer she is obedience trained, off leash trained and just overall an easy going dog, and at the same time she is also very confident. When I got her, she was 1, found in abandoned house with her mum, she was terrified of everything and everyone. She used to show fear aggression towards men and kids.
Every now and the her old self shows and she'll react towards some people. It's always against people who are afraid of or who just dislike dogs.
Any who, when she gets scared like that, the best, or only way I've found that helps, is to ask her to sit, and just wait. If she is off leash she'll do it on her own, run to me, sit at my feet, "asks" for the leash and just wait. And the she has periods, like now, when she is completely fine.
I've spoken to different trainers, and no one can give me a straight or what I find believable response to why this occurs. Have I overstimulated her? Or what am I doing wrong?
Somehow, since her periods come and go I don't feel it's because of my energy or stress level. She is obedient and trained, with no reactive issues like barking or biting.
This was a bit long, sorry about that :), but Id love to hear your feedback or view on a dog like this.
I realise its difficult to say without having met her..
anyways thanks for a great channel, really enjoy watching your clips! I also love that you show the importance of obedience. A lot of "trainers" who focus on behaviour tend to ignore or not want to have anything to do with obedience training, which I've never understood. In my case obedience is what helps my dog to calm down, when she is stressed..

I adopted a 5 yr old Alaskan Husky.about a month ago from our local shelter. She is very strong willed. She hates coming in, She runs in, runs out and barks in my face. She is very scared and insecure. It is like she was punished for being in the house. I am going to try the prong collar and long line. When she finally settles down she is very loving and sweet. I have no idea what she went through in her previous home. I have learned a lot from watching many of your videos today.

i had 2 mini schnauzers the female was bold and brave...the male was total opposite. they were 1/2 brother and sister same dad different moms. I went through training with the male and he got alot better but he only listened to me without snacks. if anyone else gave him a command he looked at their hands for snacks or he waited for me to say the command. the dogs were 3 months 1 day apart in age the male was older. He was my first dog so he bonded with me fast but the female bonded with my husband. never any fear aggression or anything if he was fearful he ran away. in old age hearing loss and vision was starting to go on both dogs... i walked up to them sleeping on the couch but i made noise first so they woke up. they were 15 years old when they passed. Kc and Sassy i still miss them everyday but we now have a male mini aussie (male) that has just completed the shots and i gotta get him out in the world.. sooner than later. 5 1/2 yr old mutt (female) also raised by kc and sassy and a full size aussie raised by my mutt and sassy.. my full size aussie (male) and my mutt helped the mini aussie but he was afraid of them at first... 3 pounds v/s 74 and 55 pounds..the puppy follows my full size aussie so i will take them out together to help the puppy face the world. the mini loves the lady at the pet store.. she has snacks..lol. all my dogs were neutered or spaded except the puppy he is too young still.

i have a miniature schnauzer and we have had trouble with him barking. I have tried many ways to stop barking like teaching him to bark on command so he only barks when he is told but he still does it. whenever he does bark even if someone walks by our house or if we are out on a walk he will bark non stop for ages until i am final able to settle him down or walk him away from most of the people or to a quieter place. it has got to the point where i have tried to be very calm when he barks and not make it a big deal but my family gets frustrated when he barks and then yells at him to stop. i really want to do the best for him so that when we go on walks it isn't so stressful and that he will only bark if someone actually comes to our house not just at someone across the road. I don't mind if he barks a little when someone knocks or first comes into the house but then he will go on for ages. I think mainly when we are on walks he just gets over exited but when we are at home i don't know if it is territorial or something else as he dosen't bite when someone is there but it is just a lot of barking. If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it.

I have a VERY SKIDISH dog from Puerto Rico that was found sleeping with one 6 week old puppy sleeping on top of her. God knows what happened to her other pups etc. She is great with other dogs but petrified of people (including me)! She has escaped from situations 3 times since I've had her which has only been one month. I feel like she takes one step forward and 3 steps back. I hate seeing all of this fright that she has and I really want her to settle and be comfortable with me. She follows me but as soon as I turn towards her - she books it. She's 22 lbs and is like a bullet when she runs. She a great walker on her leash (as long as its just us) and always turns to make sure I'm behind her. I love her so much but I need some advise. The more and more I watch videos about fearful dogs the more I don't know if my guy is truly fearful or not. He does become fearful when dogs express any interest in him, but he's not afraid of everything. Most of the time he's just overly excited and spazzy, but when he's not comfortable with something and he feels cornered or pressured, he'll fight back. I also feel like somewhere between puppy and adulthood he lost his social skills (ability to properly read other dogs' body language). I know he wants to play but he doesn't know how to without coming off aggressive. Been trying different techniques but still haven't found the best one.

Tom, loved the video. I have a small rescue mixed breed terrier 7 yr old dog. Missy's had fear aggression since I got her at 3 months. She came straight to me during our meeting but wanted to eat two ladies who walked through the room. She's a big baby and will cry like a baby if she's barely hurt. I usually ignore that behavior.
She knows how to sit, down, heal, stay but doesn't always respond, especially at home off a leash. She barks and snaps at everyone but hubby and I. I know it's out of fear. Hubby and I are in our 70's and we don't get a lot of visitors at the house, so how do I teach her not to be afraid of people, like my son or grandchildren, and stop going crazy when someone comes over?
BTW she's the alpha dog with the two other dogs (10 yr old neutered male Doxie & 11 yr old spayed female Chihuahua) in the house. She'll reprimand them for doing something wrong.
I'd like to use a prong collar after watching your videos, but I don't know what size or kind to get? She has very long, thick fur. Where do I place the collar? Is it put just below the ears?
She's a very smart dog and learns quickly. I really want to help her. Thank you.
