  • Everyone seems to love Krispy Kreme doughnuts, yet they've still had their struggles. A quick rise in the early 2000's was followed by a quick fall. A fall so significant, it could have easily ended the company all together. Although they've yet to return to their former heights, they have made an impressive recovery. This video tries to make sense of all of it.

    I think the problem is that not that many Americans want a donut everyday. Where as Dunkin’ Donuts also serves coffee which is a massive boost in sales and while the coffee drinkers are swinging by they grab a doughnut or breakfast sandwich. Krispy crème seems to have very limited attraction because of the very small menu

      one thing i liked about krispy kreme is that they don't run ads. They don't have a slogan, catch phrase, or jingle. There's no commercials for them and so we as customers don't have to end up paying for that.

    As I have learned from my classes for my Marketing Degree, one of the biggest reasons Krispy Kreme's started to fail was they forgot who they were. Not only the huge expansion across the country in a short time, but the in store boxed up donuts. As you stated in your video, their key seller is the hot and fresh donuts in the store. By making their products appear in grocery stores, gas stations and mini marts, they lost the sense of wonder and a lot of their taste. The recipe was made to be hot and fresh from their stores, not from the grocery store

    • @jamesdeppeler793
      @jamesdeppeler793 4 года назад +19

      That and just expanding too fast leads to poor QC and management problems. All those stores they opened in a hurry might have seemed profitable for a minute, but I guarantee they had issues from opening day. Bad locations, bad management, poor oversight, quality control issues. Day one, but they didn't see it initially because just bu virtue of their brand power and the novelty aspect they had customers coming in at first. And after the locals had all cycled through a few times, they stopped coming because of the issues I mentioned, and perhaps others as well.
      Rapid expansion like that is treacherous and generally difficult to manage, but companies don't often realize how badly they are managing it because the new expansions seem to do well initially because of novelty and brand power, and by the time reality has set in they have hurt their brand, overextended, have problems managing all these stores, etc., etc.
      They expanded too quickly and managed it poorly, I can say that much for sure. The details would require a more in-depth analysis.

      @iokuabegley5316 4 года назад +33

      I used to work at Krispy kreme and when you can get a Krispy kreme glazed donut right next door at the gas station then there's a problem. I don't feel their the problem allowing donuts to be sold in grocery stores but what you need to do is to make deals with certain grocery stores like maybe they can only be sold at Costco for maybe they could be sold at a Walmart or target. But if you allow them to be sold at Walmart and target and Costco and Safeway and food Max you're just asking for problems because those businesses are taken away profit that you can make by having people go into the store. I remember during the decline they actually stopped letting people know that we were making hots glaze don't donuts. If people asked for a hot glaze will give it to on but we don't offer them.

    • @kolive81
      @kolive81 4 года назад +4

      I agree that selling them at the store devalued them, I also think they doubled-down on the devaluation by selling them through charitable organizations. not that I think working with a charity is bad per se, but the quality of the donut from a charity buy vs. the hot in store had to have an impact. I'd also venture to state that putting a hamburger patty on top of a Krispy Kreme is not going to sell donuts. But what do I know of weird Dixie Classic Fair cuisine.

    • @Katsudon305
      @Katsudon305 3 года назад +7

      I agree. Sometimes over expansion starts making a company less special. There has been an increase in demographics of people who like to support the locals rather than chain. There's nothing wrong with chain, but I think there is a stigma in people's mind. This is personal speculation.

They’re always at the supermarket so I pass up on going to their locations, but then I also tend to not get it at the supermarket cause it’s not as appetizing once I’m there lol you can’t get Dunkin’ Donuts outside of their locations, so you gotta go there for that. That would help sales I believe

      Yeah, KK selling in supermarkets was an odd choice. For people not caring about super-freshness, there are cheaper options from megacorps like Hostess. For people who do care, there are in-store bakeries. It's a bit like buying major fast food chain burgers in the freezer section.

For every A you had you got one free donut, up to six, and me my brothers, and some friends would go get them, and get six a peice [we all got good grades lol] whenever report cards came out. That was so much fun, but once you hit high school they won't let you get the donuts anymore, which really sucks. But I did have some fun memories of sitting in a Krispy Kreme and watching those donuts get made and wearing those paper hats and just having fun.

    A guy in a Krispy Kreme truck came in every day and delivered them and took the old ones.
    The last year or so before they stopped the case was litterally still full every time the guy delivered fresh donuts. Like a year straight I watched this guy come in daily and empty a full case of unsold donuts and refill it.

      All chain donuts have a half-life. If they sit around for too long, they’re AWFUL.
      Krispy Kreme’s half-life is even shorter than others. Hours, really. If you fresh buy a box in the morning, by lunch time it’s closing in on inedible, and definitely needs a quick zap in the microwave to bring it back. By mid-afternoon, just toss whatever’s left.
      When they’re fresh and hot, they are the food of the gods. Later that morning, they’re still amazing. That afternoon, don’t bother. Grocery store Krispy Kreme’s have sat around for God-knows-how-long, and is why they’re so inedible.

    One other point that I don't see mentioned: Krispy Kreme was also seen as a "Southern" brand (as in Southern U.S.). When they expanded into places like the Northeast there was initially a novelty effect (where lines were out the door) but within a few years people went back to going to Dunkin Donuts. Most of the places that I know of that were opened in that timeframe have since closed.

      Tbh until I saw this video I've always perceived Krispy Kreme as a donut shop by our definition, which is really a coffee shop. When competing with dunkin they are likely facing the same competition as they would with tims. Not the competition for the best donuts, but the competition for fast cheap coffee. Though its called dunkin donuts its a coffee place first, donut shop second. After all what are you dunkin the donut in?
      So if they opened with their same tactics they fail. they arent going to attract people on the basis of donuts, they need to do it on hot coffee. And if thats not really there they don't attract the buyers.
      Like when I look at myself, I have never in my life driven past a place that sells donuts and impulse bought a donut because i want a donut. Ive only ever wanted to buy a coffee and then while I'm getting the coffee gone "eh ill get a donut too"

    They're fantastic when you get them at a location. If you buy them from a store in a box the flavor isn't the same. What happens when you buy them in boxes is the lack of oxygen inside the box. This prevents the glaze from drying and making the product soggy. At a store location the glaze dries over the donut which creates a barrier to prevent air from drying the dough. Keeping it from getting soggy and preserving that nice fluffy dough texture. If you're going to try a Krispy Kreme donut for the first time do not get it from a box. Go to a location.

    • @tikijojo

      True, but you can also follow the instructions on the box that say to zap it in the microwave for 8 seconds and it warms the dough and glaze.

    I’ve had both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts. You go to Dunkin’ Donuts to have a quick, okay breakfast, but you go to Krispy Kreme to have some damn good donuts. The donuts at DD are not as good. They may have more variety for what they offer. But something about KK, the experience, the donuts being glazed, the friendly workers(at least at mine), the 50s aesthetic, the memories I’ve had there with my family. All that combined makes me like KK more, and yes I may be biased, but they offer a unique experience, with a unique product, no other place makes donuts like that. Now I was excited when we got a DD, but it’s honestly not as good as everyone said it was, at least in my opinion, I was disappointed. Any store or shop can make donuts, but most taste the same, if you want a unique experience with great donuts, I’d recommend KK, hands down.

      Zach T. Corp I also think it has to do with taste. Dunkin uses a style that is more akin to cake. KK uses a French recipe that is meant to be light more akin to a croissant (a real one and not the huge ones I see here in Yankeeland).
      Now I'm from NC and grew up eating them with a Cheerwine. That's a good combo.

      I used this reply in another thread, but since your reply was copypasted

      That means the Iphone was influential, not that it was innovative. Tech
      companies knew at the time that a phone where the almost sole mode of
      input was touch was a dumb idea. It's hellaciously inaccurate, slow to
      use, prone to breaking, and at the time it was too expensive to justify.
      The only reason all phones look like that today is because the general
      public doesn't know shit about technology, and the smartphone fad only
      seems to have made it worse.

    I love Krispy Kreme. I was first introduced to them in 1984 while in the Navy in Orlando. I patiently waited years for them to come to Massachusetts. By then I had a young daughter and we'd drive 20 miles to get warm KK right out of the frier. Sadly the closest location now is in Connecticut.

    Growing up in the 1970s and 80s South Carolina, Krispy Kreme was an attraction. It was one of the places we visited when we went to Greenville. And yes, that sign was often the tipping point. Later, I went to college near a Krispy Kreme. They started the doughnut machine at that location in the wee hours of the morning. We'd all pile in someone's car in the middle of the night and head over there. Some people even pulled all-nighters in the Krispy Kreme studying for tests, drinking coffee, and eating doughnuts. For some reason, we thought that Greenville and Atlanta were the only Krispy Kreme restaurants. Although we were mistaken, I would say that the restaurants at both locations have a long and storied history with generations of college students and their families. I took my daughters there recently.

    The garbage Krispy Kremes in stores really hurt their image, I remember picking one box up. That was the only time I /ever/ got their doughnuts at the store. The point of KK is the freshness, stale KK is trash. The only time it is worth getting their product is from their locations. Great product when it is fresh however.

    I remember them moving into the South Florida market aggressively, with 4 or 5 new locations in Palm Beach County. The lines were always massively long; very popular- and then a year later, they were all closed. That was maybe 2003-04. I figured that the South Florida market may have too many Northeast transplants and snowbirds that were , perhaps too devoted to Dunkin' for them to compete or something, but learning about their other problems, now it makes sense.

    Here in the Houston area they opened up a bunch of Krispy Kremes in the mid to late 90s, and they were pretty popular at first, when they first opened up I remember there were crazy long car lines. Then at around 2003 ish they closed all of the locations for no apparent reason. They opened up one location a few years ago and it's still there but now there's only like 6 KK's in the houston area when back then there was a ton of them.

    • @Andreas4696
      @Andreas4696 5 лет назад +3

      Jacob Melone I don't think Company Man will do a video about the crash. He first-and-foremost focuses on individial companies. Besides, a video that explains such a topic is hard to make without being opinionated, which would make CM unpopular.

    • @companyman114
      @companyman114  5 лет назад +34

      Honestly it's just such a complex topic with no clear answers and 100's of different elements. I began making a video on Lehman Brothers, who are closely tied to the crash, and it just became too much for me to properly cover in the way I normally do. Plus I don't really predict a video like that would preform especially well. For now, I'm shying away from it.

    • @callofdutyfreak10123
      @callofdutyfreak10123 5 лет назад +9

      Company Man oh ok, thanks for the response! I just asked because I was never really properly told why it happened. Even in my economics classes, they never really discussed what happened. They just said “it kinda crashed” and didn’t go into much detail

    • @Andreas4696
      @Andreas4696 5 лет назад

      Watch this video, Jacob. It was recorded before the crash itself happened, but it explains a lot about the US economy, and why crashes such as '08 occur. I should mention that Peter Schiff is a libertarian, so if you disagree with that movement, keep that in mind. But I think Schiff makes a very good case in his speech here, regardless of his ideology.

    My dad used to be the head driver for krispy kreme donuts here in San Diego. He was a good manager, strict but fair with the eyes of a hawk for slackers, and a good businessman for them and made good relationship with a lot of other companies too. We'd get freebies from chips, restaurant vouchers, and one time Disneyland tickets just because the other managers and company owners liked my dad. When his heart started to go bad he had no choice but to quit working with them. And after that they replaced him with someone else who just wasn't cut out for the job. Rude, never on time, burnt the bridges my dad set up for krispy kreme which made them a lot of money here to begin with, and never was on the employees about their work. Over the years we saw less and less krispy kreme stores open and I think the last one left here in San Diego probably is around sports arena. This video was like a walk down memory lane for me from the years watching my dad work there and down to the decline. You hit the nail on the head with the availability at the supermarket, combined with too few locations in some markets. KK is a good doughnut. Haven't had one since 2000. Went out of my way when i was on vacay to get one that was nearby. To this day they don't have any in Brooklyn NYC. I see they have several in Manhattan. When they were in the WTC I would sometimes drive over the bridge to get them but would not drive deeper into the city. Plus Manhattan is a parking nightmare. Can't pull over suddenly when the light is on when you are worried about getting a parking ticket.
