I really love this series! I've read up to 9 and one of my takeaways has been that I don't know how to classify it in my reading spreadsheet age-wise 🤔 like, there are some dark themes, especially in the latter volumes, but the forward-most conversations are more what I'd think of from a middle-grade. Like, the stuff with the abusive mentors ring dark-- but the way the author handles it is quite delicate and I feel not inappropriate for, say, a ten-year old. The conversation there being "Sometimes adults do bad things, and it can really mess you up" -- if that was it I'd set it as more ya or adult. But it also says "...but if you can find a trustworthy adult, ask for help and they'll take care of it." it's like the old argument "how can Animorphs be for kids, holy shit" where while a bullet-pointed list of Stuff In Animorphs is horrifying, the actual delivery is definitely aimed at kids. Even in the later WHA volume where one chapter (very thoughtfully!) has a trigger warning, I found the handling of it so deft and delicate that it still didn't feel very adult-oriented.
Also, yes, the brush buddies are adorable and "master Olly" is a big softie. 🥰

The paneling is probably the most unique part about Kamome's art.

I came here after finishing the tenth volume, and I’m pleased to say I only found that the story got better, and whenever a moment gets very tense it is compounded by the art. I cannot wait to continue to listen to your discussions on this series!

That’s great to hear! I am on the 7th volume, and I just finished a very plot-turny moment in the 6th one. It’s really escalating in a well done way. Im so curious to see how many volumes there will be.

I like how the series take the time to show how magic is used in regular life. Its also a magic system that goes very well with artistic skills. Not a surprised that a great artist like Kamome would create a magic systen where creativity and penmanship are the focus.

I think if you like this you will also like land of the lustrous/ houseki no kuni which also has gorgeous art but is way more simpler with a focus on character

Freedom for magic? Like in Arcane, only Heimerdinger witnessed the pain caused by magic
